Diner Reviews
  • "We had a lovely meal and evening at 88s. I requested a table with a view; we were seated in the alcove with windows overlooking the water. The dining room was well appointed and tables widely spaced. Our servers were very pleasant and helpful. Our ordered dishes were supplemented by complimentary bubbly before, a strawberry/prosciutto bite, carrot cake cupcakes to take home. The food, with the exception of my oyster appetizer which was not a good value at $20 for 5 little ones, was amply proportioned and delicious. We also ordered the PEI mussel appetizer, the salmon and broiled haddock. While a bit pricey, the wine list was surprisingly moderate. Overall, a quality experience; we will plan to go there again when in the area."

  • "We very much enjoyed our dinner here--especially th3e complimentary sparkling wine and muffin to take home for breakfast! Food was excellent and the service was exquisite."

  • "Not a fine diner in general, but if I can find a couplle of great entrees it's all I need. They have it."

  • "Spruce Point 88 is a beautifully appointed dining room with scenic ocean views. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted and shown to a lovely table. Service was attentive and friendly. The food was, at best, mediocre- far below our expectation for such a highly regarded restaurant- over- cooked haddock, nearly raw pan- seared scallops. There are many restaurants in the Boothbay Harbor area where you can enjoy better food for less money."

  • "The Spruce Point Inn is a wonderful place in a picturesque, perfectly Maine location. You couldn't ask for a better view. The service was great and they brought out complimentary champagne and an 'amuse-bouche,' but for the reputation I would say the food leaves something to be desired. It was okay but nothing worth writing home about, which is what we were expecting to do based on what we had heard."

  • "Spruce point is a FIVE star resort. Service, dining, lodging, cleanliness are all superb. Have stayed at spruce point three times, all using Sunset B. Very romantic and ristic with a beautiful view. Pretty good for a guy and lady , 73 and 80. We look forward to visiting again soon."

  • "Wonderful experience, we had a group of 11 and the staff was very accommodating and attentive. The food was outstanding and nicely presented. We were given complimentary champagne and mouse for starters and a wonderful muffin at the end to take home with us. All in all a wonderful dining experience."

  • "We went to 88 at the Spruce Point Inn to celebrate our 20th anniversary, since we got married here 20 years ago. It was fabulous then and is even more amazing now. The food was spectacularly presented, delicious and the staff was marvelous. It has a very classy and upscale ambience, without any pretentiousness. We went every night that we stayed at the Inn and it was fabulous every time!"

  • "We went for our anniversary and had a very enjoyable experience. Our server Domingo was superb and we had a great time. Was a rainy night but still had great views from our table of the harbor. We would definetly go back another time. Great location and great service."

  • "The food at 88 at Spruce Point Inn is exceptional. Every dish is a work of art to look at, and the taste does not disappoint. Your first bite will make your taste budscome alive with satisfaction. The service is also warm and friendly, somewhat formal, but if you engage with the staff they are receptive as well. This may be the consistently finest restaurant we have ever visited."

  • "I stumbled across this restaurant while looking in the Boothbay Harbor commerce book. I had been looking for a fine dining restaurant while staying in Boothbay Harbor and was excited to try 88. It did not disappoint. The food was savory and presented well. And our waiter Domingo was really good. My only complaint was that there was no second waiter to help him. He had six tables to cover and no one to help him clear plates, fill water glasses or offer pepper. I will also say that the entrees came out slow - for only 6 tables taken in the restaurant I wouldn't want to be here on a busy night. The ambience was great and we had a beautiful view of the harbor. Would definitely return to 88."

  • "I've tried many if not all there is in the mid-coast. You would need to go to Belfast to the north and Portland to the south to "dine" out. These folks pay attention to details. The service is attentive, but not over the top. Staff are well trained. Ambiance is really terrific. Chef's know what they are doing. Wine list could use some depth, but the hotel is closing soon for the winter season (unfortunately), so they get a pass."

  • "My wife and I each ordered the duck, which we often do at a nice, upscale restaurant. I would rate it in the top 2 duck meals that I have ever had. We both really enjoyed it."

  • "We were in Maine for a week and ate at 88 three evenings. The dining room is beautifully decorated but doesn't detract from the spectacular view. The sunsets are gorgeous. Between us we tried a variety of starters, salads, entrees and desserts and each one was excellent. Entrees include seafood, duck, lamb and beef. The blueberry pie tasted like homemade. The service is very attentive and well-paced but not intrusive. The wait staff is knowledgable and the kitchen accommodates individual preferences. Nice touches including a welcoming glass of champagne and a take-home muffin at the end of the meal. Makes a very nice change from the touristy lobster/burger/fries places (which we also frequent). Loved it!"

  • "In this very classy place, the food and the wine that has been recommended were deceiving. The chef lacks experience, formation, so the food is imprecise. I had a filet of sole that tastes nothing but capers. The wine - well I prefer not to say. The resort Spruce Point Inn is still charming, and a good place that we would recommend, my wife and I."

  • "A lovely venue, good food but man oh man do they need a Training Manager! There were so many issues that my wife and I made up a game of guessing what the poor souls were going to screw up next. Just a few: describing a palate cleanser as watermelon and it was sushimi, reaching across us to serve, setting down wrong entrees, not asking if we wanted another glass of wine, etc. I like coffee, just about had to shoot off a flare to get more AND the poor untrained waiter was nice enough to finally leave the silver pot and it was empty! Oh yea, I almost forgot, the staff were "whisperers", you know, told that they need to talk softly to fit the decorum. Well, that's OK for church but not OK for dinner."

  • "Poor service and average food for 4 star prices. Waited an hour for our dinner when did come out our fish was not cooked."

  • "We spent a week in the Boothbay Harbor area and dined out once a day. Not surprisingly, there are many restaurants to choose from. We enjoyed all our meals. Our Spruce Point Inn experience was at another level. Our table was located in a glassed extension of the main restaurant. We had a beautiful view of the water and the sunset. Our waiter engaged us in the level of conversation we wanted (friendly but not chatting us up), and was fully conversant with the menu choices and the way they are prepared. The service was outstanding and our food was delicious!"

  • "Alright, this restaurant is considered the fine dining experience at the spruce point inn. You must remember you are dining in Maine. A fine dinning experience in Maine will not compare to NYC, London, Marina del ray. I was completely happy with the quality of food and service because it was what I expected. For example. Service time is a slower, servers are seasonal workers who are working really hard but everything is forced. They aren't like the professional severs at some fine dinning restaurants. I would go back because the food was good and the views are to spectacular."

  • "This was our 3rd visit to 88 at the Spruce Point Inn. 88 was where we celebrated our wedding day and we make a special visit each year to enjoy a romantic evening. The service and cuisine is excellent, the view of the water beautiful. We hope to come back each year and celebrate at our special restaurant."

  • "We went for a birthday celebration in a private room and then again in 88 and both times had to wait over an hour for food and when it arrived 3 of the 6 meals were lukewarm. Potatoes were like paste. Luckily we were with very good friends and family and we had a beautiful sunset. It used to be one of our favorite special occasion restaurants, but no longer."

  • "Truly the finest dining I have experienced here in Maine."

  • "Great place, but they need a sommelier. We ordered a bottle of champagne and they brought it out, opened it, and served us warm champagne. Why even open a warm bottle? As for the food, it was very good. Scallops appetizer had three large scallops, which were perfectly cooked; the pink peppercorn sauce was delicious, but needed more. Raw oysters from Glidden Point were clean and cold. 88 gets big points for the thoughtful, nice touches - a free glass of champagne to start; an amuse bouche; warm cheddar biscuits; and a parting gift. Chicken breast stuffed with arugula cranberry stuffing and a side of risotto was high quality chicken and super flavorful, served sliced. We also enjoyed the sliced, rare tuna, maple glazed. Try it!"

  • "We were a little disappointed with the service at Spruce Point. It has a good reputation for being one of the nicest places in Boothbay but the experience for us was not all that great. We waited over an hour for our dinner while everyone else in the restaurant got served. And to top it off, our leftovers that we asked to have wrapped up were thrown out. We were celebrating my Mom's birthday and she was just overall disappointed with how the night went there. The food tasted great though."

  • "88 is a magnificent gem in Boothbay Harbor. The food was delicious and perfectly prepared. The menu was diverse with a combination of local cuisine and traditional entrees. We traveled with 2 children (10 & 6) who are well behaved. The chef prepared special entrees for them. The staff was excellent - they made the entire experience very special. I highly recommend and will definitely visit 88 the next time we are in Maine."

  • ""88" is Spruce Point Inn's "fine dining" restaurant, and it lives up to that description. We celebrated an anniversary there last weekend and could not have been more pleased. The service was perfect and the food was gorgeous -- wish I could post pictures! After a complimentary glass of champagne, an amuse bouche of gazpacho set the tone -- it was delicious! The Damariscotta oysters are (according to my husband) the best in the world. The signature salad, with its nasturtiums and goat cheese, is almost too pretty to eat, but I'm glad I did! We each had the lobster, beautifully presented and served with corn-off-the-cob, fingerling potatoes, and drawn butter. The hot fudge brownie was deliciously decadent. A perfect anniversary spot!"

  • "We chose Spruce Point for our only fancy meal during our one-night July 4 stay in Boothbay largely because it was out of town and thus parking would be easy. Eating at 7pm meant we got a table overlooking the harbor and could watch all the preparations for the festivities. By the way, the food and service were very good, too! Started us off with a complimentary glass of bubbly which my wife stayed with through the dinner, followed by a single scallop 'amuse-bouche'. We each had excellent seafood appetizers and entrees, with no need for dessert. The server was attentive but not hovering and the wine list is varied and well-organized. Only negative is that the Maine 'Cellardoor' wines are overpriced relative to the other offerings."

  • "This is a magnificent location with the open Atlantic framed wonderfully from your table. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed and made to feel like special guests. The service was professional, attentive and engaging, making appropriate suggestions and accurate descriptions of the meals. We started with the Glidden Point oysters which are local, plump and deliciously briny. My wife had the tenderloin which was prepared perfectly and was as tender as could be. I had the steamed lobster which was perfectly done and cracked before plating to make what sometimes can be a messy experience into a most enjoyable and satisfying one. At the end, we were presented with Inn- packaged bran muffins as a late night snack or morning treat."
