  • "I made a reservation for 6pm on a Sunday through opentable. We drove a half hour to Spread, only to find it closed. Lights out, door locked. No sign. We hungrily drove home for another half hour. I double-checked our reservation, and the website, and all seemed to be in order. I followed up with an email, but got no reply. Our previous dinner experience had been wonderful, and we were disappointed not to eat at Spread again. I'm sure unanticipated things come up, but we would have appreciated a call or email to save us the trip, or at least a follow-up in the days afterwards."

  • "If you're going to Spread don't bother making a reservation for a table. The bar is the best feature of the restaurant and the service we've received sitting at the bar has been far superior to when we've sat at a table. On this particular visit the staff seemed almost annoyed that we were there and it was very awkward. The food was also somewhat overpriced for the quality we received."

  • "The menu a la carte is quite limited but has some interesting variety of items such as wild boar and excellent sauces with the meat . The currently 'mod' cocktail list and the expanisve appearance of the bar suggests an attempt to appeal to the bar scene. Somehow it does not quite all come together despite interesting wall decor and lighting and ends up feeling impersonal.. Maybe, we were just put off by the notion of $9.- for mashed potatoes to go with the meat!"

  • "What a disappointment. Spread is very cute inside. The layout and lighting is inviting and warm but that's where the positives end. We went as part of Maine Restaurant Week and thought it would be a good way to sample a variety of their offerings. They were in the upper tiered, $45 / person category with some of Portland's finer restaurants so we expected a good experience. Service was abhorrent. There were only a couple of other tables (never a good sign on a Saturday night) and no obvious reasons to make us wait and wait. Food was marginal at best and really overpriced. Drinks were $14 each and clearly watered down. It's such a shame as the space is great. This place can't last long -"

  • "The menu is a la carte, which adds up quickly. The average price of side dishes is $9. I had the beet and goat cheese salad, which I thought was fine. My dining companion tasted it and said it was "bland". We both had the half chicken, which was excellent. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. My mashed potatoes were good (but expensive). My friend had the risotto, which was terrible. The rice was not cooked (it was actually hard in the middle). The flavoring was awful and it was not creamy, as one would expect from risotto. The server did take the risotto off of the bill. We considered having dessert, but there were only two options and the tea selection was bizarre."

  • "Service was good, but seemed more focused on the bar. Our server was friendly and helpful. Dinner was delicious, except the scallops were on the cool side. We would return because all of the food tasted really great and my partner's steak was cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was nice and cozy."

  • "A group of 6 of us recently dined at Spread on a Saturday evening. Immediately upon being seated at the back of the restaurant, a loud bang jumped us out of our seats. A staff member had run down the stairs and out the back door for a smoke break and didn't seem too concerned about the guests as they let the door slam shut with a thundering bang. We all hoped that would be a 1 time occurrence but as the evening progressed there was a steady stream of employees going in and out the back door letting it slam every time. It reached the point where we asked the server to address the issue and he said, "They shouldn't even be using that door anyway." Yet, the activity continued. The food was not memorable and the service was slow. Won't return."

  • "excellent meals -it was a set menu for valentine's day which we weren't aware of at the time of our booking, A little more than we wanted to spend but well worth it for VD. Not sure we'd spend that much on just a regular night out for dinner so we would like to see the regular menu is."

  • "Service was excellent, food was great, it's beautiful inside.. my only complaint dinner was pretty pricey.. 183 with tip and that includes 2 drinks with a total cost of 20. The boar was delicious, but very small portion for the cost of the meal. I look forward to going back and eating off the menu and not a prefix menu. I would recommend this place to a friend."

  • "My Husband and I were very pleased with our evening at Spread. The service was excellent and the meal was timed perfectly - we never felt rushed (a common issue we find), even in many of the nicer restaurants. We started with the Ricotta spread which was wonderful. We followed that up with the Half Chicken and the Boar Rack; both had exceptional flavor. The cocktails were yummy and the and the atmosphere was lovely."

  • "We didn't expect anything exceptional as we were drawn to Spread by the use of a LivingSocial coupon. What a surprise! The hummus was smooth with a final "kick" of poblano. The duck confit was the best I've ever tasted. The chef was able to produce a texture that was unctuous while maintaining a lovely crispy skin. For our entree we had the scallops with schiracha hollandaise...perfectly cooked with a controlled heat. The apple beignet was tasty but more like a fritter than a beignet. All in all a fabulous meal served by a personable and competent waitperson. We will definitely go again."

  • "The server-in-training was preferred over the main server. Ordered the wild boar chop and it was served rare. I received a snarky remark when asked if it could be cooked more... But then the potato pavé was undercooked as well. The flavor was there, however the execution fell flat. The space is beautiful and larger than expected for the city. There are amazing restaurants in Portland and unfortunately for Spread the poor service made the experience just ok."

  • "Found this place through Open Table and chose it based on the advertised menu. Upon reviewing the menu in the restaurant it was barely like the one advertised. Ordered a "Ribeye" steak, certainly was NOT a ribeye cut and was undercooked with very little flavor. Drinks and dessert were very good on the other hand and it seems like a place I'd rather get a drink with friends rather than dinner."

  • "First time was a Friday 7 pm reservation. The bar was busy but not too many in the restaurant. Not a good sign but by 7:45 pm the dining room was quite busy. Food was good but not great. Service was excellent. Price very reasonable. Known for their spreads we had the Duck mole, which was very nice. Salads course was excellent - just properly dressed with wonderful greens and roasted golden beets and Granny Smith apples. Entree was disappointing - was recommended the Lobster Fettucine (something I wouldn't normally order) but was inspired to as it's scratch made pasta and a "whole lobster worth of meat". Well, the pasta was undercooked (not even close to al dente) and this poor little lobster had a tiny tail and one claw."

  • "This is the 2nd time I have dined at Spread. Both times were pleasant experiances. The food was prepared well and was very good. The drink menu had some great seasonal selections as well. Dinner for two before tip was around $85. Not an inexpensive outing, but reasonable for a local place in downtown Portland. It was quiet both times I went and I haven't figured out why. If you're looking to try somewhere new, give this place a shot."

Restaurant is uniquely decorated in a funky-elegant manner. DOn't miss this one when you are dining out in Portland--it is a gem. Like dining in New York City."

  • "The place can't make up its mind -- does it want to be a bar with superior nibbles or a restaurant? Server a nice kid, but didn't let us enjoy our cocktails after serving - hung around waiting for our order. (Reduced balsamic in mine was on both the inside and the outside of the glass; vodka and tonic was initially servied with club soda.) No one noticed that mussels were missing the bacon. The kitchen produced a fresh replacement in short order, but flow of meal was off. Bone marrow was served (with panache) in the bone, but one had barely any marrow. Wild mushroon + goat cheese toast and wagyu sliders excellent. Noise from the bar grew at we approached 9:00 pm. Oddly, it made us feel like the fun was happening elsewhere."
