SP QR has been one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco for years. I have had a half-dozen wonderful meals here. This week I had a very mediocre meal. The $68 white truffle Mesa Luna special was undercooked and salty. Our other pasta dish was also oversalted. To their credit, they comped one of our desserts but I'd rather have the outstanding food that I That they known for. :-)

If I could give SPQR 6 stars I'd do it in a heartbeat. It was our anniversary and we were treated like long-lost cousins. The staff were wonderful--especial thanks to Noelle & Joseph--the food was exquisitely presented, creative, and delicious, the wine smooth & rich, the dessert fabulous. I'd recommend SPQR to anyone wanting a truly exceptional meal.

After only hearing great things about this restaurant - I decided to book a table for me and my wife for our anniversary. Unfortunately though - we were deeply disappointed. Maybe my wife and I are unique, but we prefer quality of food over the presentation. We ordered 2 apps and 2 entries. We also ordered a bottle of wine to compliment the food and celebrate our anniversary. The apps were average at best - but the entries is where the real problem was. We ordered the tortellini and parsnip ravioli. The tortellini was edible - but the ravioli literally had no flavor. We even asked our waitress for some crushed red pepper (which is something i hate doing at "nice" restaurants) - however, this didn't help much. We probably finished 80% of our apps becuase we wanted to save room for the entries. But when the entries came, we maybe had 2 or 3 bites from each. Needless to say, we will not be coming back. The vegetarian options were limited and the ones we did order were not good. If you are vegetarian and looking for a nice dinner...stay away!!

This was our third visit to SPQR and it just keeps getting better. Our extremely knowledgeable waiter Joseph guided us through many new menu items with ease. His recommendations were spot on. Without going into detail about specific items our party of 3 ordered I will simply say everything we tried was superb. The wine list of course is simply amazing. Desserts were outrageous. It is very tight seating so be prepared for that. Can't wait to return.

We got their pasta tasting menu for $56 and sat at the chef's counter, which is a fascinating way to see everything made. Definitely request chef's counter if possible. Service was impeccable. I love that they offered 1/2 glasses (3 oz tastes) of wine, so we could sample more. The first and last dishes of the pasta tasting, including the signature squid ink pasta, were the best. The second dish, which looked like ravioli, was just a tad undercooked, not yet al dente. I had to really chew it, but the overall flavor was so good, I ate the undercooked bits anyway. I was less a fan of the cranberry farro, but the meat was absolutely delicious, soft, melt in your mouth kind of way. Anyway, highly recommended!

SPQR is definitely classy. The presentation is excellent, the taste is what you'd expect from a 1 Michelin Star restaurant, and the sizes of even a 2-course meal will not leave you unsatisfied. There's also a substantial wine menu, and a good set of waiters who'll help pick out good pairings. If you're not used to this kind of traditional Italian, the meal may feel a little heavy, so go for the more simple dishes and definitely do some research beforehand so you're not left Googling menu options in the restaurant.

We reserved our table 10 days in advance only to be told it would be 45 minutes after our reservation time before we could be seated. This is the second time this has happened at SPQR. They clearly overbook and have no room for error if any party stays longer than they are expecting. While the food is good and the bar service team was great, I doubt we will ever go back - in SF there are thousands of good restaurants so why allow yourself to be treated like this?

This restaurant really stands out in my mind due to its ability to create dishes that you are not used to seeing. I was floored by how much flavor their entrees had. While not cheap, SPQR really balances price vs food. We will definitely be back to this restaurant as top to bottom you will be hard pressed to find a better Italian restaurant.

Can't remember what SPQR stands for, but it should be JNTG - Just Not That Good. We were really looking forward to this place - great reviews, Michelin star, difficult to get a reservation, etc. Maybe it was an off night, I don’t know if it’s always like this. The experience felt very rushed, they slammed my main course down in front of me while I still had half my appetizer left. The food itself was not bad, but just very average, not memorable at all. How they got a Michelin star remains a mystery to us. There are so many awesome restaurants in San Francisco at much less cost, try any one of those instead of SPQR.

We arrived for our 7:30 reso & were graciously escorted to the best table in the house...one of only two directly opposite the bar. Gr8 for people & kitchen watching. Starting with the baked ricotta was a good idea and following with the chicken liver mousse-y & gemelli pasta was even better. On to saffron rigatoni and white anchovy with baby kale. The house made pastas are awesome & the seasonal bent in every dish is more than apparent. We heaped on at the end with the pork degustation and finished with tiramisu. This experience is not for everyone. Flavors are interesting, intense & eclectic. We LUVD it!! I MUST say we got extremely expert help in choosing our wine...essential if you don't know much about Italian wines..we don't!

Gave SPQR another shot after a bad experience a year ago and it was more of the same. Our waitress was horrible with no appreciation of the menu (in response to a question to provide color on the tasting menu "it is five courses, they come sequentially, and umm, they are all really good") wasn't able to answer basic questions on food allergies and took 20 min to show up and ask us if we wanted water, an additional 20 min to check with the chef on a dish and then there was a 40 min gap between the anitpasti course and the primi course. Inexcusable. Of the four dishes we tried, only one was memorable and the others were dry and unbalanced. How this place has a Michelin star is beyond me, but I will not be giving it a third try.

Although I gave the restaurant a "notable wine list" check mark, I would like to have seen more than just Italian wines on the list. One or two Croatia wines were on the list, but that's not enough variety for me, especially being so close to California's wine country. The salad I had was so so....nothing to write home about. My pasta dish and dessert were fantastic though. After just being in Napa, Sonoma, and Healdsburg and having some fabulous dinners, I guess I'm a bit spoiled with perfection. Reason I gave this restaurant a good to very good, and not outstanding.

For $420 for 3 people, I expect a waiter and professional service. We had neither. We did the pairings, and we had a busser bring us food every once in a while. The wines were presented by a woman who didn't introduce herself, and could not advise what wines were to be paired with what dishes. Typically the wine would be dropped off about 20 minutes before the paired dish. When I asked who she was she told me she was the dining room manager and also in charge of the "wine program." A couple of the dishes were ok, but others seemed confused. Portion sizes (and the pours) were on the small side and we left hungry. We had been when it opened and this was a very disappointing experience. There is much better value elsewhere.

The service was very slow. We realize that there is a small cooking area but to wait so long is not enjoyable. Also the lighting was very dim and the menu was difficult to read. Our server was terrific. She apologized for the wait and even pulled a tiny flashlight out of her pocket to aid in reading the menu. It was our 41st wedding anniversary. While the food was very good, and some of it was unusual, it was not memorable except for the brussel sprouts. Very good food and pleasant service but simply not worthy the money.

I had a lovely experience at SPQR. The food and service were very good. While it's obvious there is a lot of detail that goes into the food preparation, I felt it should have been slightly cheaper for what you get--entrees are definitely worth the $25-30 range, but not above. There are other places in the city with comparable quality that are not as expensive.
