We a wonderful meal at SPRQ. We had booked a table but decided to sit at the bar . It was very good. Service was excellent and informed. Wine list was good and again very informed wait staff on wine. Food was outstanding . Cant wait to go back the next time we are in San Francisco!

Although I gave the restaurant a "notable wine list" check mark, I would like to have seen more than just Italian wines on the list. One or two Croatia wines were on the list, but that's not enough variety for me, especially being so close to California's wine country. The salad I had was so so....nothing to write home about. My pasta dish and dessert were fantastic though. After just being in Napa, Sonoma, and Healdsburg and having some fabulous dinners, I guess I'm a bit spoiled with perfection. Reason I gave this restaurant a good to very good, and not outstanding.

If you have extra cash to throw away, why not donate it to a homeless kitchen rather than pretend measly portions of moderately good food are worth the big bucks they're asking. Can anyone spell pretentious? Does anyone remember the tale of the Emperor's New Clothes?

This is definitely one of our favorite places for a romantic night out or special occasion. Food is always solidly great, and the service is top notch. The one thing that could improve would be the noise level, but that's a problem everywhere in SF.

The menu was diverse, delicious and interesting. I enjoyed my house made pasta and the Passionfruit Pannacotta was a delight. The service was the only turn off. A bit slow and not particularly friendly. But our fellow diners more than made up for this by being delightful companions. Thank you SPQR for a memorable meal. Looking forward to next time...

For $420 for 3 people, I expect a waiter and professional service. We had neither. We did the pairings, and we had a busser bring us food every once in a while. The wines were presented by a woman who didn't introduce herself, and could not advise what wines were to be paired with what dishes. Typically the wine would be dropped off about 20 minutes before the paired dish. When I asked who she was she told me she was the dining room manager and also in charge of the "wine program." A couple of the dishes were ok, but others seemed confused. Portion sizes (and the pours) were on the small side and we left hungry. We had been when it opened and this was a very disappointing experience. There is much better value elsewhere.

So glad I have found this small gem of a restaurant. I was sadly pushed for time, so I only managed a couple of dishes. Sat at the bar and the server was most helpful with wine recommendations. Due to its size there are no large tables, so the ambiance is great. The highest of recommendations.

The service was very slow. We realize that there is a small cooking area but to wait so long is not enjoyable. Also the lighting was very dim and the menu was difficult to read. Our server was terrific. She apologized for the wait and even pulled a tiny flashlight out of her pocket to aid in reading the menu. It was our 41st wedding anniversary. While the food was very good, and some of it was unusual, it was not memorable except for the brussel sprouts. Very good food and pleasant service but simply not worthy the money.

SPQR was highly recommended and the food did not disappoint. We brought our own wine ($30 corkage feed). The service was very good and the food was too. If there is one complaint it's that you can't have a private conversation. Tables are less than 6 inches apart so you really do feel as if you are dining with the people sitting next to you.

A nice little gem of a restaurant. The meatballs that came with the lasagnette we're simply put the best I ever had. Creamy and with a little dash of heat. The restaurant had one of my favorite wine, the Bastianich friuli. What more can you ask for.

I had a lovely experience at SPQR. The food and service were very good. While it's obvious there is a lot of detail that goes into the food preparation, I felt it should have been slightly cheaper for what you get--entrees are definitely worth the $25-30 range, but not above. There are other places in the city with comparable quality that are not as expensive.

SPQR is super famous now in SF. Everyone's talking about it. For $150 for 2 people, I left a little unsatisfied. Also, the service was SO slow. I understand the care and craft involved in making every dish, but by the time the main entree came, I was already over it. Also, don't get the lamb. It was $50 and came with two little medallions.

The most notable thing about SPQR is the food. I did the sampler menu with wine pairings and found it to be just fantastic. The wines were notable and the pasta was fresh, the flavors were new and exciting. I dine out frequently and this is one of the best dinners I have had overall.

Excellent dinner, unusually wonderful service from the several knowledgeable and charming waitstaff. Fresh imaginative dishes. (One - fusili with a 'white Bolognese' sauce - was too bland for my taste - our server graciously exchanged it for a delicious quail egg ragu on angel hair pasta.) The voluminous Italian wine list will satisfy those aficionados out there; our server steered us to an excellent Sicilian wine that went very well with our dishes. All in all, a great evening. I'll be going back and soon.

The food is always fantastic, though they lean a little too much toward exotic and overly fancy dishes, where I think they would do better to prepare some more traditional fare in their own style. It's a pretty noisy place as the bar is so close to all the other tables and they really pack you in. This should be expected from a place that is more european in style though, so don't go expecting a quiet romantic dinner.

I had been to SPQR a number of times in the past and had always enjoyed the restaurant but it had been several years since I had had an opportunity to return. I had been reading all the favorable comments in recent years about SPQR, and after seeing that its chef for the past several years had been selected as one of FOOD AND WINE magazine's chefs of the year in its July issue decided it was past time to return. SPQR and its chef more than lived up to the great reviews they have been receiving! I took a friend of mine who lived close to the restaurant and we both enjoyed the fabulous food and the whole dining experience. SPQR now rates among the best of the many great restaurants in San Francisco.

I love the inventive Italian cuisine at SPQR. They take pasta to a whole other level. Using ingredients such as sea urchin, blood sausage, duck, persimmon, they transform the basics into food that is as inventive as it is unforgettable. Try the pasta tasting it is available. I won a gift certificate for SPQR and decided to use it for a birthday celebration. We sat at a counter watching the cooks work and that was fun. Down side was, the restaurant was so crowded that we were bumped, nudged, aware that traffic was always behind us. If we go back we'll sit at a table. Menu was an adventure but the wait staff helped. Unfortunately, this was the second time dining at SPQR and both were not very good. While the appetizer dishes were outstanding, the pastas were not at all. One arrived cold and the other salty. I know that SPQR is rated one of the best in San Francisco, but my husband and I both have no intention of returning, despite the fact that it is less than 2 blocks from our home.

We had high expectations for the restaurant because of the good reviews. When I call to make the reservation, they asked if we were celebrating anything and I told the person on the phone that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. But nothing special was done at the dinner. My veal was really dry and my husband's tuna had a smell. We had to remind the waitress to get our drinks after ordering. The duck liver appetizer came with croutons that were hard and stale. We could not bite into them. there was no bread brought to the table for us to spread the duck liver pate on. The tomato peach gazpacho with fried shrimp was good.

Food was knocked out of the park. Simply delicious and unique. We sat at the Chef's counter, which means we got to salivate while watching the beautiful kitchen ballet spin out dish after five-star dish. They are quite the team to watch, doing amazing things in such a small space. Service was spot-on and friendly and professional. We ate until we couldn't eat any more! Much appreciated the pate app compliments of the kitchen staff, plus the low-key birthday dessert was perfect for my partner's special day. Overall, one of my favorite restaurants in SF!

Chose SPQR to visit a place not in our usual haunts. Had heard good things from people I trust so was excited to visit. We opted for the pasta tasting menu, as tasting menus can be fun. We had the wine flight chosen to go with it & they were all great. Service started well, but deteriorated as the night wore on. Timing between food & wine was off & delays between courses yawned ever further apart. As a tiny restaurant, we were seated cheek-and-jowl with another couple doing the same menu. Instead of comparing food notes, we discussed service problems. Then the food. House-prepared pasta was grainy. It all felt heavy. Flavor matches between pasta & sauce were hit-or-miss. Tiramisu was inedible. To think what $300 would have bought at Zuni!

Had heard many great things from friends about this place for a while, and we finally decided to check it out yesterday. Reservations were tough to get, only 5:30 and 9:30pm time slots are available 1-2 weeks out. Restaurant is Italian-themed (supposed to stand for "people of Rome" or something like that), with homemade pastas and fresh meats/vegetables.
