Diner Reviews
  • "We were really looking forward to eating here but were unfortunately not impressed. The host was great, our waiter was great but the menu wasn't exciting at all. It was overpriced and the rendition of porchetta was very dissapointing. We travel to Italy and south France frequently and where we dine there is so superior to this that we can honestly say we were truly unhappy with the dining experience. You can eat in the south of France in Italy for a fraction of the price and have a meal that cannot be compared. Why? Can't figure it out. Maybe all the high-tech folks and the like that are clueless and need to spend money. We won't be tempted to come back and have other overpriced but better restaurants to visit when we come to SF."

  • "SPQR e perfetto! What a delicious meal. They offer menu that uses local and in season ingredients. There is also a pasta tasting menu in case you can't choose one of their many delicious pasta dishes! We had a fantastic meal, starting with Burrata. I had the chestnut fusilli with a veal bolognese and sweet potatoes, one of their signature dishes. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce/sweet potatoes were delicious! Finished with chocolate-peanut butter pudding with gelato, chocolate cake, and malted whipped cream. AMAZING. Overall, it was a really great meal and experience."

  • "One word for the pasta. Sublime. But why use one word, especially one word that doesn't convey how inventive, playful and delicious everything at SPQR was."

  • "This restaurant was highly rated for inventive food - and indeed each course was presented very nicely. Unfortunately, each dish tasted merely 'meh' and was very disappointing overall. For the money, I expected to be wowed. Instead, I found mediocre food, no cocktails available from the bar, and 2 inches between tables. You'll feel part of the conversation two tables to each side. I reccomend Frances, the best meal I had in the city."

  • "Food here is off the charts. My husband liked it so much he bought TWO of Chef Accarrino's books and Matthew even spent the time to write a personal message in them. We plan to return again and again and slowly go through his entire very sophisticated menu. Each dish was a joy-what an inspiration! My only negative is that this is a small and noisy restaurant so come later (like after 9 pm) when there is not so much hustle and bustle and watch the kitchen-those guys are amazing in that tight space and everything so squeaky clean."

  • "It was a delicious night with my boyfriend. The service can be improved, they're a little lost inside the restaurant, delayed a little to attend us! But in general was a great night, We loved the food, was really delicious!"

  • "SPQR was one of the last restaurants me a friend had on our reservation lists on a recent trip to San Fran. We chose to go with the Assagio Di Primi, and the chef selections did not disappoint. With a knowledgeable and conscientious staff the whole lunch experience was memorable. I can't wait till my next visit to San Fran, to try more of their offerings. The Tiramisu was a gem as well, great way to finish off the meal."

  • "Outstanding and innovative food. Excellent wine list assuming you like Italian wines. The only downside is the cramped space."

  • "This was an exceptional San Francisco dining experience. The food was bold and original, the wine pairings spot on, and the service was the best I've ever had anywhere in San Francisco. We had the 5 course tasting menu plus the optional black truffle ravioli course. Rarely does every course in a tasting menu meet or exceed my expectations, but in this case, all 6 courses exceeded mine. I highly recommend doing the tasting menu with wine pairings - the variety, price, and portion sizes are a far superior option to ordering al a carte, and it's a wonderful way to broadly experience what SPQR has to offer. We sat at the Chef's Counter, and for two people, I would highly recommend this. Our server was outstanding."

  • "- this is a wonderful place to take out a date or to have a good time with your close friends - tues-fri has an affordable tasting menu ($56 + $42 wine pairing) - everyone on the table must order the tasting menu - make reservations a month ahead because they book fast"

  • "The service was great, the ambiance was fine, but the food was very disappointing - especially for the price. The truffle raviolo special was under seasoned and had no detectable truffle flavor. I tried a piece of truffle on its own and it still had no flavor. It seemed that the truffle was old and had gone stale. The lemon fettuccini and was also under seasoned and seemed like it must have been sitting for a while since the upper part was colder than the bottom and all the sauce had settled to the bottom leaving the upper half dry. Both desserts we had were meh. The liver mousse appetizer was excellent and the best thing we ate. I would recommend having some of that and some wine in the bar, but I would not recommend dinner here."

  • "One of my favorite restaurants for YEARS! We moved to Vermont in 2010 (last time I dined here). Back for a LOVELY dinner. Wine ( $64.00 + carafe and 2 additional glasses) appetizers for 3, pasta course for 3 and main course for one.... $390.00! Just be aware!!!!"

  • "Although we had a table reservation, we prefer to sit at bars to eat, and so we did at SPQR. Bar lady was well-schooled in wines (we drink mostly California wines so we needed help through the Italian wine selection), and she knew the menu inside and out, and was able to give excellent descriptions of the dishes offered. One of us had the 5-course pasta tasting menu ... utterly wonderful ... and the other picked a couple of appetizers and a main from the regular menu. It all worked out just perfectly. Unctious mouthfuls all the way through. Like the way SPQR recommends a dessert wine to compliment each dessert."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. The food is always delicious, creative, and well presented. The Italian wines steal the show and the knowledgable staff are always ready with suggestions and in depth information about the menu. The servers here are not only excellent, but are true foodies and wine afficionados. I ordered 3 courses "chef's choice" with wine pairings and let the staff take it from there. As always, I was thrilled with the selections. I highly recommend SPQR and their sister restaurant, A16 when visiting the city."

  • "Sat at the counter. A lot of people in a small space, but it didn't feel uncomfortable. Service was friendly, attentive and well informed. The food was superior. Started with a small warm cinnamon scented biscuit with butter and a lightly sweetened pear compote. Then the chicken liver mousse followed by halibut cheeks and beautiful local asparagus. Both dishes were wonderful and beautifully presented. I had my eye on the cheese course to finish, but I couldn't do it - it would have been too much to eat. Maybe next time. I settled for a somewhat herby dessert red wine. Check out the wine list - well constructed. Not the easiest reservation to snag, but not the hardest. Walk-in can work at the early and late edges of the service hours."

  • "It hardly seems possible, but SPQR has only gotten more popular! I think they have added tables so you are cheek by jowl with your neighbor and privy to their conversation--oh, that the space were a bit bigger. That said, the food continues to be wonderful--an inventive, unusual menu with lots of different body parts in the dishes. We enjoyed the fritto misto presented in a large squid ink crispy shell and consisted of squid, carrots and other seafood with a tangy remoulade. The tuna crudo was artwork on a plate with squares of tuna and some breaded fried olives and other accompaniments. We shared two pastas, both of which were delicious, especially the smoked linguini with clams and bacon in an arugula sauce--it was a vividly brighy green."

  • "Everything positive that we had heard about SPQR was confirmed. What a terrific restaurant. We had a vegetarian as one of our diners and the choices for her were spectacular. The wait staff couldn't have been better in recommending dishes, not just for her but for all of us. From start to finish, a terrific experience."

  • "My husband and I had the tasting menu--with wine pairing--as part of his birthday celebration. From the moment we walked in, we knew we were in for a special evening. We were seated immediately, and our server was attentive but not fussy. The pastas were to die for--especially the egg-filled ravioli with shaved black truffles (the truffles were an extra birthday splurge) and the seafood pasta starter. Everything was delicious. I am not as familiar with Italian wines as I'd like to be, and the wine pairing provided an introduction to some new and exciting varietals. It's a small space, and the tables are close together, but we were lucky to have fun and fabulous "neighbors." I cannot wait to go back! Thanks, SPQR team!"

  • "Easily one of my favorite Italian spots in the city! Everything I've had here is amazing and creative, service is also prompt, gracious, and knowledgable. I could eat their Octopus/Kale and beautiful desserts all day long! Seriously I love everything here. Seating is very tight which I don't mind when neighbors are around my size. The last time I was here, I sat between tables of larger guests near the door and I felt so nervous everytime we rubbed elbows or when they'd ask us to shift our table so they could pass through to use the restroom. I don't mind interaction in bars or the Mission, just didn't expect that in a Michellin Starred spot. Not terrible, but maybe they're trying to make guests feel like they're in Italy! :)"

  • "Simply one of the best meals in one of the best food cities in the world. The dishes have basic elegant design and wonderful execution. Outstanding service.Love the small crowded ambiance. An amazing wine list. Rare that every dish and every bite in a entire meal exceeds expectations. SPQR is a must stop for any food lover."

  • "Highly recommend. Food and service exceptional. We sat at the bar and Angela our bartender/service was exceptional. We had finished two amazing pasta dishes, plates cleaned except for the leftover sauce. Rather than just take the plates away, she asked if we wanted some bread to dip in the sauce. Of course! That's a first and so appreciated. The only reason I didn't rate the overall experience 5 stars is because I requested via voicemail (they admitted too busy to answer the phone) to request seating at the Chef's Counter. The voicemail greeting said that they listen to every message. They hadn't as said they had no note of my request at check in. Not a big deal, as Angela at the bar was even better probably. Amazing food and service."

  • "I took my boyfriend to SPQR for his birthday. Unfortunately they did not have our table ready, but they sat us at the bar to wait. I had called to let them know it was his birthday ahead of time, so they have us each a glass of champagne when we sat down, it was very nice. The food was good, although I had expectations it would have been even better. We ordered a few dishes to share, and by far the best was the only pasta dish we ordered- the beet ravioli (which has a much fancier name that I don't remember). Our waitresses, both at the bar and at the table were very friendly and offered excellent service."

  • "SPQR has long been a favorite restaurant, but with its more recent popularity, it's been harder and harder to get a reservation. Fortunately, it's well worth the wait. We had an outstanding meal, with every dish surprising us in some way. We started with several appetizers, including the mackerel, which was lightly seared and almost buttery in texture. The mushroom lasagnette was another great choice, with a rich, velvety texture. Our main courses included the scallops with cauliflower and mushrooms--one of the best dishes I've had in a while--and the lamb trio. We finished with the bambolini and the chocolate cake. Both were fantastic. Our service was exceptional, as always. I can't wait to back."

  • "Great date spot, or anniversary occasion. The food here never ceases to amaze me. The rich sauces mix with fresh flavors of the antipasti and a wine list where you can find a pair for every type of dish!"

  • "The chef's counter was great - unlike other restaurants that charge a "premium" or special meal for sitting at the counter, this was just a great view into the workings of the kitchen - you could order whatever you wanted, and just sit and watch the magic happen. It was also truffle season so we got the chance to have a fantastic dish topped with black truffle. Wow was that good. Would certainly go back, it was a really lovely meal!"

  • "From a neighborhood restaurant, you get very high quality Italian food and wine. Casual, friendly atmosphere and service. We had pork in Parmesan broth (mix of succulent meat and crispy ears); lamb with beans in a light sauce; and a homemade buckwheat pasta. Style was rustic in taste and refined in presentation. Cooking was exceptional. Sommelier recommended an excellent wine - I know little about Italian wine but he listened to our preferences and go the choice exactly right. It is a really nice mix of relaxed atmosphere and high quality food that you seldom find - reminded me of another Italian restaurant in Melbourne. But, yeah, places like this are few and far between."

  • "Food was ok, but tables packed way too tight. Many other better choices in SF for Italian food."
    Dined on 3/5/2014
  • "From the moment we walked in the door we had a bad experience. We were seated at a table that was bordered by other tables so close that our server had a hard time reaching us. The food was expensive and poorly prepared. The chef was unwilling to change an order even when an allergy was mentioned. The noise level was so intense that it was hard to talk. Take your business somewhere else and maybe the owners will understand that they need to change the way they are doing business"

  • "Too small and can't even get out of table to go to restrooms with out moving our neighbors from their chairs. Prices are super high for the quantity and quality! Service was the saving grace for the trip. Skipping for others in the area."

  • "I took one of my best friends to SPQR for her birthday. We have dined there before and loved it. Everything we ordered was fabulous. I highly recommend the octopus, opal basil, panissa, chickpea, cucumber and american ham and the pastrami appetizers as well as the fettuccine and clams in pesto, saffron lasagna, buckwheat tagliatelle with bacon braised pork, smoked fettuccini, pork belly, smoked bacon and soft quail egg for your main course and blonde panna cotta for dessert."

  • "I went to SPQR with my boyfriend for his birthday dinner. The food was great, so was the service. Everything was going well until two thirds into the dinner. Two young women came in and sat down next to us. At SPQR, that means 5 inches away from your own table. The dialog was in both Korean and English. One of them was talking so loud that she was basically shouting every word as if her dinner company were 30 feet away. They were of course completely oblivous to everyone else's look. We were forced to listen to her dating life; it was like a lousy rehearsal of The Bachelorette. It was so ridiculous; it felt surreal. As we were fleeing the restaurant 20 min into the absurdity, I heard they say "let's pray!"... "dear Father, thank you for...""
