SPQR is a Northern California restaurant inspired by Italian cuisine and wine.

An acronym for Senatus Populesque Romanus, SPQR translates to “The People and Senate of Rome” and was the emblem of the Roman Empire.

We strive for a balance in offering the highest quality of food, wine and service we can for each guest’s experience in a relaxed, fun, and inviting atmosphere.

    The food is always fantastic, though they lean a little too much toward exotic and overly fancy dishes, where I think they would do better to prepare some more traditional fare in their own style. It's a pretty noisy place as the bar is so close to all the other tables and they really pack you in. This should be expected from a place that is more european in style though, so don't go expecting a quiet romantic dinner.

    A wonderful dining event! Staff provided excellent guidance in creating a true gourmet experience - every course a wonderful mix of flavors and textures, complex but not trying too hard. Sommelier hit a home run when presented with our likes and our budget. To top it off, the timing of each course was right where it needed to be. Definitely on our list of "will return" restaurants in SF - Worthy of all of the accolades!

    I had been to SPQR a number of times in the past and had always enjoyed the restaurant but it had been several years since I had had an opportunity to return. I had been reading all the favorable comments in recent years about SPQR, and after seeing that its chef for the past several years had been selected as one of FOOD AND WINE magazine's chefs of the year in its July issue decided it was past time to return. SPQR and its chef more than lived up to the great reviews they have been receiving! I took a friend of mine who lived close to the restaurant and we both enjoyed the fabulous food and the whole dining experience. SPQR now rates among the best of the many great restaurants in San Francisco.

    I love the inventive Italian cuisine at SPQR. They take pasta to a whole other level. Using ingredients such as sea urchin, blood sausage, duck, persimmon, they transform the basics into food that is as inventive as it is unforgettable. Try the pasta tasting it is available. You will leave feeling quite full.

    Not a thing was out of place here. Not in a stuffy sort of way but just a really good overall experience. The Meyer lemon and squid ink pastas were delicious and the chicken liver mousse was an unexpected treat.

    I won a gift certificate for SPQR and decided to use it for a birthday celebration. We sat at a counter watching the cooks work and that was fun. Down side was, the restaurant was so crowded that we were bumped, nudged, aware that traffic was always behind us. If we go back we'll sit at a table. Menu was an adventure but the wait staff helped. All in all, an interesting nite.

    Thoroughly enjoyed the innovative food pairings. Who knew that peach and tomato soup with shrimp could taste so good? Definitely a yes for the adventurous.

    Unfortunately, this was the second time dining at SPQR and both were not very good. While the appetizer dishes were outstanding, the pastas were not at all. One arrived cold and the other salty. I know that SPQR is rated one of the best in San Francisco, but my husband and I both have no intention of returning, despite the fact that it is less than 2 blocks from our home.

    We had high expectations for the restaurant because of the good reviews. When I call to make the reservation, they asked if we were celebrating anything and I told the person on the phone that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. But nothing special was done at the dinner. My veal was really dry and my husband's tuna had a smell. We had to remind the waitress to get our drinks after ordering. The duck liver appetizer came with croutons that were hard and stale. We could not bite into them. there was no bread brought to the table for us to spread the duck liver pate on. The tomato peach gazpacho with fried shrimp was good.

    Food was knocked out of the park. Simply delicious and unique. We sat at the Chef's counter, which means we got to salivate while watching the beautiful kitchen ballet spin out dish after five-star dish. They are quite the team to watch, doing amazing things in such a small space. Service was spot-on and friendly and professional. We ate until we couldn't eat any more! Much appreciated the pate app compliments of the kitchen staff, plus the low-key birthday dessert was perfect for my partner's special day. Overall, one of my favorite restaurants in SF!

    Chose SPQR to visit a place not in our usual haunts. Had heard good things from people I trust so was excited to visit. We opted for the pasta tasting menu, as tasting menus can be fun. We had the wine flight chosen to go with it & they were all great. Service started well, but deteriorated as the night wore on. Timing between food & wine was off & delays between courses yawned ever further apart. As a tiny restaurant, we were seated cheek-and-jowl with another couple doing the same menu. Instead of comparing food notes, we discussed service problems. Then the food. House-prepared pasta was grainy. It all felt heavy. Flavor matches between pasta & sauce were hit-or-miss. Tiramisu was inedible. To think what $300 would have bought at Zuni!

    Had heard many great things from friends about this place for a while, and we finally decided to check it out yesterday. Reservations were tough to get, only 5:30 and 9:30pm time slots are available 1-2 weeks out. Restaurant is Italian-themed (supposed to stand for "people of Rome" or something like that), with homemade pastas and fresh meats/vegetables.

    Wow! Everything we ate was delicious. Don't miss the chicken liver with stonefruit appetizer. Our waitress was very helpful in pairing wines with what we ordered and even anticipated our needs at one point by bringing another glass of wine when she noticed the entrees had taken longer to be delivered than she had expected.

    A great dinner out. The brassicas and grains, burrata, avocado, green goddess and olio verde appetizer was delicious...my wife and I shared that dish. My wife had the bucatini pasta dish while I had the semolina gnocchi dish. Both were terrific. A couple of glasses of Prosecco to start the evening with two glasses of Gaglioppo from Calabria went perfect with the appetizer and the pasta. In short, the food is terrific. A little cramped, but the food is worth it.

    We two "foodies" read about SPQR in a recent Food & Wine Magazine article. After looking at a sample menu on the website, we immediately made reservations for an upcoming trip to the SF Bay Area. We'd never considered carmalizing a radish. Or braising an artichoke. Or cooking pesto atop a rabbit terrine. With our foodie creativity tweaked, we happily & gratefully departed the 5 star SPQR ready to get back to Santa Fe and begin some new culinary challenges. Do yourselves a favor - do not even think about missing this place!

    ..RIDICULOUSLY DELICIOUS! I made a reservation for this nice restaurant because my foodie girlfriend was dying to try this place out. The moment we walked in we were punched in the face by the nice and relaxing dim lit ambiance. We had arrived half an hour early and they already had a spot awaiting for us. We were given the option to either sit at the table or at the counter area in front of the kitchen where you can view the chefs cook. My girlfriend excitedly chose the counter area so that she can watch the chefs work their craft. I ordered the Buckwheat Tagliatelle while my girlfriend ordered the duck cannelloni. Both were out of this world. Both dishes were filled with flavor that I cannot describe. Definitely coming back again for more

    We had read about SPQR but never made the effort to venture over to Fillmore Street. Last week we did and it was well worth the visit! Three things were outstanding for us: the duck liver pate (simply the best), the black truffles on our pastas (lots of them), and Kristin, our server (delightful). The restaurant was charming; it is small and intimate (unfortunately for us, the people on either side of us took the liberty of adjusting their tables for their convenience making service to them affect our space, but that was no fault of the restaurant, just the rudeness of the other customers). The food was delicious and beautifully presented (we prefer food a little less involved, but you do not get a Michelin star for simple, direct food).

    I previously had amazing experiences at SPQR but this last time I went, I was honestly a bit underwhelmed by the food (the service was on point as usual). We ordered the regular tasting menu (not the seasonal truffle tasting menu) with the wine pairing. The squid ink chitarra was very interesting and delicious but the rest of the dishes were meh. The black truffle raviolo ($50 additional) was cold in the middle so the waitress brought us a complimentary dish, which was a better. The tuscan blood sausage ragu and the eggplant agnolotti were pretty bland. I have to say that I really did love the food here prior to my last visit. Perhaps avoid the tasting menu until the new one comes out..

    Outstanding food. We ordered an appetizer, 5 pasta entrees, and a dessert to share between 4 people, which we felt was enough. The food was amazing, and very reasonably pried for its quality (we didn't have drinks and the total came out to $46 before tax / tip). Only thing I thought was lacking was the service -- for a Michelin starred restaurant, the servers sure took their time...

    What a horrid experience to be treated in such a snooty, pretentious manner by our waiter. We are all born and raised in San Francisco and were truly shocked at the attitude. The food was mediocre, with one dish that was dripping with a clear sauce with the characteristics of mucus. Our $30 carafe of wine was four ounces. We were expecting a carafe to be the size of most others, but this was barely enough wine for ONE person. Picture a carafe that may have been made for a children's doll house. Four ounces! Unbelievable!

    I hesitate to judge too harshly the overall concept of the menu, but my impression is that the concept was driving the quality of the food instead of a focus on the quality of the ingredients and preparation. And the concept was a train wreck. Our antipasti were mediocre at best, the primo (corn ravioli) was actually tasty (although it could have done without the crushed corn-nuts(?) garnish), but my main 'beef' came with the "degustazione" of pork. Not a single piece of the pork was properly prepared. The skins were tougher than jerky, the belly was dry and overdone, and the ear was un-cuttable and inedible. The scattered pieces of popcorn and mushy padron peppers only added insult to injury. Depressingly, a $37 wreck of a secondo.

    Our reservation required a credit card and $50 no show fee. I guess understandable because it's a small restaurant. When we arrived the tables were so close together it was uncomfortable so we sat at the bar. We sat down but were asked to move (we were the only ones at the bar) to accommodate even number of guests on each side. Ok, so we did. Funny, 3 people came in right after us leaving a single chair open! The wine list is extensive but only has Italian wines. More variety of regions would be better. We wanted to order two appetizers first but was told we couldn't without ordering dinner. The excuse was it is a small kitchen but I believe it is to move people out quickly. Good food, not a fun or relaxing place to eat! Too many rules!

    I am not sure where to start - superb evening from the food, to the service, to the atmposhere to the wine - to everything. We walked in for a table at 8, it was packed - I felt like I was in a French cafe, tables close to each other ( great for earwigging!) and the atmosphere was buzzing. Fantastic. We had a mix of small dishes which included Carrot and Lentil salad ( how can anyone make carrots taste sooooooooooo good. Still can't get over that), grilled octopus and a cheese plate. Service was wonderful - attentive but never felt rushed. If I lived on the West Coast, this would be a regular haunt of mine. You have to try it.
