Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I have dine here before and have always enjoyed it . But this time will be the last , Poor service, Blinds on windows broken and very dusty, service was slow and our food choice was a bad decision we ordered Fajitas for two and at most restaurants would be plenty but not here. We had beef and chicken combo but you hardly could fine the meat lots of peppers ,onions, and tomatoes ? ? I never heard of tomatoes in fajitas it looked like they used them to fill up space on plate and 30.00 dollars a rip off for sure Last visit for sure"

  • "Food and service were very good. Had a very nice time and would go again."

  • "The chips were chewy (they were replaced when asked by more crisp chips - but we already had our dinner by then) The meat was bland. The beans were smoked beyond smoked and tasted like an ash tray - horrible! Our waiter had a wrinkled shirt"

  • "While staying at the Boulders Resort we found it very convenient to dine at the Spotted Donkey. It was my wifes Birthday and she enjoys good Mexican food. The food was not good it was GREAT and the service and ambiance matched."

  • "Great food good friendly service, fantastic margaritas"

  • "The Donkey Nachos were a meal unto itself. Lots of chicken and black beans. My wife and I split the enchaladas which were delicious and she had a very fresh and tasty salad."

  • "We have been to the Spotted Donkey several times and the food has been wonderful, however it was off this time. We took our grandson there for his 20th birthday. The Wait staff couldn't have been nicer, but all three entrees were below standard. The shrimp fajitas were mostly onions, with little shrimp. The crab and shrimp enchiladas were all cream sauce with no discernible meat. the Chili rellenos consisted of a pile of pork, a pile of rice with the two little peppers, shredded and draped all over the piles of pork and rice with salsa thrown over half of it. We won't be going there again anytime soon, even though it is just a walk from our house."

  • "The food is good but it has an American flare. It's not truly authentic Mexican because they use cheddar and jack cheeses instead of mexican cheeses. The guacamole was great and the Mexican Mule cocktail was good."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "The food was excellent but the nachos were a meal in itself - next time we'd do the nachos and then maybe share a meal."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "Great food! Great service! Highly recommend for those looking for excellent enchiladas. Both the carnitas and chicken were tender. The Barbacoa was too salty for my liking. The Donkey nachos are unique and a must try."

  • "Have always enjoyed the Spotted Donkey, but this time the food didn't seem quite up to their usual standards. It was decent, but not great. Still a favorite place for dinner, though."

  • "Highly recommend the beef and carnitas enchiladas, but everything at the table was good. Guacamole was simple, which I prefer, and very fresh. "

  • "Went here for dinner. Menu had great variety and interesting dishes which were a twist on mexican food Food was good and presented well Service was good but not overly friendly Good beer selection "

  • "We came in with a group of 30 people after golf (we did have reservations) and our service and food were terrific. Brian the manager worked with everyone. Everything came out in a timely manner and hot. "

  • "My husband and I were staying at the Boulders Resort and decided to try this place after reading the reviews. We both like spicy food. The nachos hands down were the best we have ever tasted (and my husband considers himself to be a nacho lover). The fish tacos were also very tasty - we tried both the mahi mahi and the shrimp and they were great. The top shelf margarita was also delicious. "

  • "We love going to the Spotted Donkey and are never disappointed. The menu features many of the traditional Mexican favorites, yet with quality ingredients and a twist to the typical. Portions are just right (not Supersized Carb Fest portions). The choices for margaritas always makes it fun. Love the donkey art work!"

  • "A texmex favorite. All three of the diner's felt their food was the best. We will return."

  • "As my daughter would say, Nom Noms :) Wife's new favorite spot. You had me at the jalapeños sitting in a shot glass of Buttermilk Ranch. Could be the best thing i have ever had!"

  • "Spotted Donkey has been one of our favorite dining spots until recently. We wonder if there has been a change in management. The hostess was less than gracious, the service was deplorable and the food was sub-par. We won't be returning."
    Dined on 5/8/2014
  • "The waiter was friendly, but the service was lacking. I must not understand how HARD it is to wait tables. The spicy margarita was fabulous, can't remember the name. Had to ask for refills; chips, water, cocktails and asked for the bill. It was crowded so maybe they were under staffed. "

  • "We love Mexican food and have now been to the Spotted Donkey 3 times. Every time has been good. Fish tacos are excellent. Reservations go quick, so book early. "

  • "The food was great but expensive, especially for Mexican. I would have given 5 stars but eating/drinking off the happy hr menu should not cost $175 for 3 kids and 4 adults that didn't eat a real meal"

  • "I had been told the food was good and a nice environment but service was not up to speed. We found the food very good the environment was very good and our service was great! The previous folks must have gone on one of those nights??? Can happen to any business. We really enjoyed the entire experience and would highly recommend it anyone visiting the Scottsdale area"

  • "We had a great night at the Spotted Donkey and would highly recommend it!"

  • "Although this restaurant gets good reviews locally we were not impressed. Our drinks were served without the use of a tray, the man's hands practically on the lips of the glasses. One enchalada was served with the meat inside cold. Perhaps they forgot to microwave it enough. In the end the party next to us was so loud we couldn't have a conversation and left."

  • "good menu mix of Mexican and American food, great little patio with nice views, and the best wait staff in the area. thoroughly enjoyed our early dinner in the mountains. "

  • "I love everything about this place: the food, service, decor, indoor and outdoor seating, music, ambiance. . . . When I want to relax and enjoy a great dining experience, I go to the Spotted Donkey. It's also a great place to take visiting friends and relatives."
    Dined on 4/23/2014
  • "The Spotted Donkey was taken over by the Boulders Resort. There is a great bar which is a fun place to sit if you are prepared to wait. The bar staff here are great, and will make you the best margarita you have ever had. The Patio has wonderful views of the desert and city lights. The wait staff are very good and they try to accommodate various food allergies. My order of Shrimp Tacos on corn tortillas came out on flour tortillas, so I had to send it back. It reappeared with only half of the shrimp. The Carne Asada was very tough and over marinated. So two out of four meals were very disappointing. We will try again, as it is close to home and a fun place to eat."

  • "Despite having booked a reservation ahead of time we had to wait 25 min. for our table and then the service was the worst I have ever had there."

  • "Very good "real" Mexican food and chili (we are from New Mexico)!"

  • "Fantastic southwestern/mexician food. Great ambiance and plenty of great tequila to choose from. Very reasonable priced . Service was great. We stop here at least once every year we come to AZ. Highly Recommend !"

  • "I would say the location, quality of food and ambience were all very good. The annoying part of our experience is that the service was quite bad (and I'm low maintenance) and the policy is to add an automatic 20% tip on parties greater than 4!! Not happy about that, especially since the food is quite expensive. (most expensive Mexican food I've ever had)"
    Dined on 4/10/2014
  • "Had to give this experience an "outstanding" -- ten guests at one table! Orders taken promptly, orders served promptly, no request denied. An exceptional experience of what a restaurant should be, especially with such a large party."
    Dined on 4/8/2014
  • "It was great. Some of the best Mexican food we've ever had. It was so good we went 2nights in a row to try other menu items!"
