A word from Sportello
Located in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood, Sportello (Italian for counter service) offers a menu of Chef Barbara Lynch's trattoria-inspired Italian dishes for both lunch and dinner. Sportello is a modern interpretation of a diner with two "U"-shaped counters situated around an open kitchen. Take a seat at the counter and enjoy a bowl of handmade pasta and a glass of wine from wine director Cat Silirie's approachable, artisanal wine list.
Sportello does have several tables for more conventional seating. They are available for parties of five or more or by request. Requests are honored based on availability.

  • "A personal family favorite- Sportello always satisfies, ever a 5 star culinary experience. Long time staffers treat us like gold every return visit. Food is both delicious as well as artfully presented. From the marinated olives, or mushroom and leeks small bites, to the bolognese, porcini and other primi selections --all consistent winners, prepared to perfection. A "must-go" best that Boston has to offer! Don't miss an evening or brunch- time meal here!"

  • "I am never let down when I go to Sportello. Just has a cool vibe right when you walk in the door until you pay the bill. Definitely a little more high end but its worth it. The pastas are to die for. My favorite, the Carbonara, wasn't on the menu when we went so I went with the Strozzapreti and that more than exceeded my expectations. Wine list is extensive and delicious. Our server was helpful, funny, and fun. I will be going back ASAP!"

  • "I eat at Sportello any time I travel back to the Boston area. The food's consistently great, the service is almost always great, and the nightcap downstairs at Drink makes each trip a fantastic experience."

  • "I'm a big fan of Sportello and eat here 3-4at times a year when I visit Boston. Ate here on 4/5/14 and the food and service were as good as ever. The coconut cake is the best coconut cake I've ever had."

  • "All the food was delicious. Stand outs were the beef carpaccio and the strazzopreti; excellent! Octopus in general is a challenge and was overcooked/rubbery. The Giannone Farms Chicken was cooked perfectly, tasted delicious but was too salty. I dined with someone who does not like coconut and actually loved the coconut cake! Looking forward to going again. :-)"

  • "Great food, great ambiance, friendly host, friendly server, friendly busser. Even the valet parking guy outside was nice. Highly recommend the polenta with lamb ragu."

  • "Our evening at Sportello was just grand. We made a reservation in advance of our trip to Boston and chose to go on my husband's birthday. When we arrived, we realized they didn't have a full bar (they have wine and beer), which was mildly disappointing since my husband's drink is a scotch, neat. I expressed my surprise to the waitress who, surreptitiously, discerned my husband's favorite scotch and brought him a glass of Balvenie 12, neat, with a lit birthday candle taped to the glass! What a wonderful gift! What service! And, the food was wonderful---the octopus and the gnocchi and the rabbit and the beet salad--all superb."

  • "food is delicious but expensive. Plan to spend at least $20 for a lunch entree and $10 for a salad."

  • "Sportello never disappoints. The food is fresh, so delicious and consistent. The team of chefs have a deft hand at seasoning and just the lightest touch with sauces. The homemade pasta is "to die for". My favorite remains the tagliatelle bolognese. This restaurant has become our favorite. We eat out a lot but if we are near the Seaport...Sportello is our first choice. We like the casual and friendly staff. Try it!"

  • "When I'm hankering for great, freshly made pasta, prepared in the open kitchen, this is my goto place. The open kitchen design makes the atmosphere warm & inviting. Like being in Moma's kitchen while she russles up a fresh plate of pasta. Great list of eclectic but approachable wines to complement the robust flavors of the dishes served up. The attentive staff make this restaurant more comfortable than home since you needn't lift a finger to enjoy you tenure in the kitchen."

  • "restaurant week lunch menu underwhelming - steak tartare delicious, everything else was very pedestrian/ordinary: minestrone soup meh; fish cakes ok -more of a salad to accompany it nice; gnodi not generous in portion of spinach; brownie conception great, but for my taste too sweet. nothing tasted Wow! service excellent."

  • "Great food and service. Decor was more casual than the website and menu led us to believe. The food now out over the chic dinner decor. I would go back."

  • "My wife and I went to Sportello for lunch during Dine Out Boston as a special treat. We had an excellent experience -- the food and service were uniformly quite good, from the apple jam butter for the bread through to the desserts, and it was just amazing to be able to watch the chefs in action from one of the long counters in the middle of the room. "Energetic" is a good word for the noise level -- perhaps a tad higher than our ideal, but not overwhelming by any means."

  • "Been to Sportello half dozen times this year & become my default option for meeting the husband after work. Always exceeding expectations until our last visit when we brought his new boss! Bad timing of spotty service, over-cooked octopus & under-seasoned crudo made a poor impression on the new boss :( Ugh, Sportello! Why must you make us look like a fool after so many fantastic experiences?! Food: High - Lardo Crostini Burrata app, Beef Carpaccio app, Gnocchi, Strozzapreti, Tagliatelle & Polenta w/ Lamb Meh - Pork Belly Crostini, Scallop Crudo app, Corzetti, Salmon entree Not So Much - Marinated Mushrooms & Leeks, Octopus app Service: Quirky, knowledgeable & sometimes forgetful We'll come again, but try some other places for a bit."

  • "We have been wanting to try Sportello for awhile, and finally did for lunch during Dine Out Boston. The staff was extremely nice and helpful, and the menu was interesting. We were a party of four and sat at a corner which was a nice configuration to converse. Two of us had the prix fixe and two ordered off the menu - all enjoyed! The atmosphere is casual, kind of diner like, but the food is definitely more gourmet!"

  • "As a couple who lives in and dines out often we could not wait to try Sportello. We were intrigued by its counter seating and modern decor. Wow were we disappointed. The appetizers were inedible. Octopus that took you 5 minutes to chew, beef that had zero flavor and a pâté that 3 of our 4 diners had to actually spit out. The entrees, were small and BLAND. My philosophy is if portions are small, make every bite delightful, this was not in any way the case at Sportello. Finally the bathrooms, which are one at a time, open up right to the dining section, how's that for privacy. Our waitress was the only redeeming thing about our entire experience. Please, if your looking for a high quality meal, go somewhere else!"

  • "The experience was wonderful, but the menu selection for dine out was very small. Only 2 dishes to choose from and one was vegetarian. A bigger selection would have been nice."

  • "As part of a premium brand sort of restaurant group, Sportello should deliver on at least the basics of fine dining but is just doesn't. Much of the food sounds delicious when you read the menu but alas, everything we ordered ranged from ok to complete-train-wreck. There was over salting, over cooking, undercooking, use of garnishes that sound much cooler and more interesting that they taste and even the bread was sub-par. It's hard to run 5+ restaurants well... so it's not that surprising that Sportello comes off as a slightly half-baked operation that's been neglected by corporate. There are places where your fine dining dollars will get you more deliciousness without the hype and mildly snobby service. Skip the fancy chain restaurant."

  • "Unpretentious little restaurant, a half floor above street level affords a view. Short and simple menu, but more interesting choices than many competitors during Restaurant Week. Lacking a bar scene, the noise level actually allowed conversation. Strozzapreti, veal cheeks, and gnudi were all hits. Caramel brownie was outstanding. Reasonable wine list."

  • "Was looking forward to dining here, but was a little underwhelmed by the room. Not bad, just more casual than expected. The pasta dishes were a raving success with my group. I'm still awed by how god it was!"

  • "I called and arranged to change our reservation to an earlier time at 5:30. She was happy to accommodate. We arrived, timely, to be greeted by a grumpy host and an empty restaurant. No smiles or pleasant greetings for us. We asked to sit by a window. "You'll have to be out by 7:00", says he, tersely. This treatment continued until finally another wait person arrived to finish serving us. The mushrooms were vinegary; the olives were ordinary; the beet salad was delicious; the pasta bolognese was good. The attempt to create a clean sleek diner type venue fell flat. Nothing to write home about. Wouldn't go back"

  • "We had a very good dinner; however, there is not much to say about the ambience. Seemed like a take-off of Friendly's with the counter space. From start to finish though, the food was very good--bread and ricotta excellent and the chocolate & peanut butter dessert was a nice splurge."

  • "unique combinations of food, great homemade pasta, great choice of wines. There is no need to add butter to everything..it ruins the true flavor. Try good olive oil.Fun dining experience."

  • "The staff messed up the reservation and were at first churlish about addressing it Only after a few volleys back and forth did they honor the reservation request and find the proper seating that had been booked. Food is good. Service is attentive. Would recommend it with "reservations" regarding them honoring reservations. Be careful. If a bigger party comes in your screwed"

  • "Not that great. Sauce and pasta was bland. Overpriced food. Overpriced wine. Plenty of better Italian places in south end, north end, etc."

  • "Sportello offers an unusual combination of casual bar dining with delicious Italian food. We took our boys, ages 12 and 14, and we all loved our food (the veal cheeks with brussels spouts were outstanding) and the hip vibe. We hope to return!"

  • "We LOVED the food at Sportello...but have to admit the ambience is sort of "random". By random, I mean it's set up like an old school 50s diner, but it's excellent Italian cuisine....so the seating is a bit awkward b/c you have to sit at the the counter vs. in tables (There are a few tables, but only like 5 in total, so your best bet of getting seated fasted is at counter). So just keep that in mind if you are planning to dine with more than 1 or 2 other people. I did have the best bolognese dish ever! And my husband enjoyed the rabbit ragu....definitely recommend for foodies...just wouldn't consider for a special occasion or romantic meal..."

  • "A few years ago my wife and I went to Barbara Lynch's No. 9 Park and for our 30th anniversary and had the tasting menu with paired wines. We spent $500 for the 2 of us and left feeling it was worth every penny. We spent $150 at Sportello and left feeling that we spent too much, but not because the food wasn't good. Most diners sit at the counter, which is OK in and of itself, but the stools have no backs so it was hard to relax. I wouldn't mind putting up with this if I felt the owner was doing what they could afford, but Lynch could have afforded backs on the stoolss. She did this as some kind of concept. The place was busy, so it works for some people. But if you like to lean back and relax, then choose another restaurant."

  • "We were WOWED by this focused gem. You know you are in for a treat with Barbara Lynch as the proprietor/chef/owner/mentor. I was thrilled to see the hotel in such a convenient location to my OOT hotel accommodation - little did Barbara and staff know that I was the head writer for the 2014 Naples (FL) Winter Wine Festival of which she was a featured Chef. The event raised more than $13M dollars in 2014 for Southwest Florida children's charities. Thank you Barbara for your leadership in the kitchen and your culinary empire...but most importantly, thank you for sharing it with the world!"

  • "Loved the restaurant. From the Duck Pate to the melt in our mouth Gnocci and the Veal Cheeks, it was all delicious, perfectly prepared and wonderful. We finished off with a chocolate torte that came with a peanut butter whip and it was like our own reeses peanutbutter cup! Would go back in a heartbeat. The service was wonderful too."

  • "Sportello never disappoints. Whenever we visit Boston, it's one of our first stops. The food is always outstanding (peerless pastas) and the service is always fantastic. We've tried our best to try to convince them to come to NYC to no avail. I guess that means we'll just have to visit Boston…often."

  • "Terrific food and fine wine list make up for somewhat uncomfortable stools at the counter sitting . Actually enjoy the almost communal counter approach allowing nice viewing of the activity in the kitchen but stools are hard and the foot rest is at a strange height. Nice selection of Italian wines from different regions and price points. But the food is the drawing card here with attentive and informative service."

  • "I had made a reservation in hopes of a table but we were seated at the end of the counter by the register/kitchen. Our waiter was very friendly but everything we asked about seemed to be completely different than what he had described to us. Overall the flavors of the food were good but not what we had expected and not really what we had wanted. The wine was delicious and I did appreciate the waiter pouring us an extra glass on the house when he could tell we weren't thrilled with our dishes. Overall it was a miss for us as counter seats were uncomfortable and not very ideal for a date. None of the food was bad however limited selections and for very specific tastes. I can't say that we will be returning."

  • "This diner-trattoria mostly works. The menu is very narrowly focused on pasta dishes, but they are made to a very high standard. A couple of dishes were home runs - the gnocchi (with loads of truffle oil) and the wonderfully moist, flaky, succulent coconut cake. Others were merely very good. Service was cheerful. It all cost a bit more than I planned, but the quality justified the prices."

  • "We had a great experience at Sportello. Our server was very helpful and always available. He was very helpful in suggesting or customizing an entree for my wife who is a vegeterian. The appetizers, beet salad & pork crostini were both creative and delicious. We knew our entrees would be great after the starters. We had the taglietelle and gnocchi entrees which were both very good. This restaurant is not for everyone, given the diner bar stools without backs are little uncomfortable. However, we plan to return soon."

  • "Went with my fiance for a semi-casual V-Day dinner. The dining room wasn't too crowded and the service was pleasant. The 1st thing I noticed was that their music playlist was on point. I liked the young crowd and cool atmosphere. Pork belly crostini: very delicious. Octopus appetizer: Interesting/tasty. Rabbit: I liked it, but w/olives & broth, the dish was overly salty. Bolognese: Rich and amazing! Veal cheeks: My fiance who doesn't like prunes or celery root LOVED it. Every part of the dish was cooked, seasoned, & balanced perfectly. The wine that was recommended by our server was great, wish I knew what it was. We also ordered the Chocolate Torta for dessert, it was just ok, kind of like a dry brownie w/chocolate peanut butter frosting."
