A modern interpretation of a diner located in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood, Sportello features an approachable, artisan wine list curated by James Beard Award Winner Cat Silirie. Snag a stool at the counter and enjoy a bowl of handmade pasta!

We had a great lunchtime experience. They had something for everyone, including our two year old. Service was excellent, lunch was great, and the brownie I had for dessert was the best I've ever had. I'm regretting not getting a slice of coconut cream cheese cake to go...

We were not happy with our dinign experience as we had made a reservation far in advance for 4 people. When we got there and asked for a table, understanding there are only a few, we were told that we needed to sit at the counter and even with a reservation, a table could not be guaranteed. We were alos told they were saved for larger parties. Unfortunately a table for four sat empty behind us for 45 minutes when a party for three walked in and was seated there. The restaurant is very expensive and their wine list does not include less than a $36 dollar bottle of wine. Sitting at the counter may be fun for the young but puts a strain on those who are from the baby boomer set.

The staff was great and went all out for our 28th anniversary. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal despite the lunch counter ambiance. Before the dinner we had a drink downstairs at Drink and definitely would not return. Too any reasons to go into here. But I would got back to Sportello on a regular occasion.

Went after having drinks at Drink. Great food in an informal setting. The Epoisse pasta was amazing. The wine list is short, but has very well chosen Italian gems. Our server was wonderful; she was very personable, helpful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend Sportello!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 1/13/2010
My overall experience here was great. The one negative element was that we arrived and it took about 5 minutes of standing at the door for someone to come over and seat us. We felt really awkward and weren't sure what to do. We saw someone who appeared to be the hostess running around but she didn't come over until one of the servers told her to. That server provided some great recommendations/help and was extremely attentive.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 1/9/2010
Sportello has great food - it is Barbara Lynch's creation afterall. But it is exceptionally over-priced for a menu full of pasta dishes and the uncomfortable conditions (diners are squished in to uncomfortable counter seats and its nearly impossible to talk with a group larger than two). I'd recommend it as a good place to try out once, but I likely won't be a repeat customer -- too many other restaurants with comparably excellent food at better prices points or with better ambience (or both).

  • Really inventive fresh food

Really inventive fresh food choices here, but I question the value proposition. The setting is a high-end diner and the server we had was passive-aggressively lackadaisical, at best. If the prices were low, that might be acceptable, but $100 lunch for two demands a bit more. As for dinner, I couldn't imagine a less congenial setting for a fairly expensive meal unless I was seeking a pre-event or late night supper. Stools at a low bar are not designed for lingering. The open-kitchen design can be fun, but someone should clue-in the staff that we can see them when they are chatting and not attending to guests. Also how many times do you need to hear a chef call for a server? That said, the epoisses cappellacci was a revelation.

The food was quite good. The swiss chard & ceci bean soup w/pheasant polpetti, sage, was excellent! The Tagliatelle was predictably good, but I wish I had tried either the orecchiette (braised lamb) or polenta rustica (braised goat)for an entree. Our waitress was knowledgeable, attentive and kind - Thank you! Parking nearby was almost non-existent and the neighborhood is less than inviting. We finally found metered parking on Summer almost to the Convention center. There is a 2hr limit and we had a parking ticket on our return.

The "lunch counter" set up was a great reminder of the fun that you can have on stools. The food was so amazing - the polenta was smooth and creamy - the veal on top was perfectly cooked. The gnocci really was little pillows - of love with the cream sauce and peas. The wait staff was attentive - helpfully directing our choices of food and wine.

Very nice concept. I loved how you kind of have to know its there to find it. It shows confidence in product and trust that people will talk about the restaurant. The food was amazing especially the veal and quail. Swordfish was cooked perfectly. The pastry department does an excellent job. The atmosphere is counter style so it is a very comfortable relaxing place with fine dining quality food. Lynch once again has gone above and beyond and created an awesome place. Definitely will be back to show more friends.

Thoroughly enjoyed lunch. Food was exceptional, particularly the bolognese. Tomato soup, fondue like appetizer and pantacce were also very good. Service was good. The restuarant was not busy on a Saturday afternoon and the combination of location (Fort Point), counter service orientation and somewhat higher prices may pose a problem.

The food at sportello is great. The fresh pasta dishes are really what sets them apart. The counter is great but I wouldn't recommend it if you are going with more then two people as you sit in a straight line. Overall I thought everything was great. Lucky to get the only table for two. For a special birthday dinner at a restaurant that takes reservations and headlines a well-known chef I would have been let down to sit at the bar-style table on a diner stool. Our server appeared to be in a great hurry, making me uncomfortable. The temperature was too cold for my wife, and even me. The food was superb, the best salad I ever had, and my wife's appetizer was sumptuous (the potatoes fondue cheese). Wow, such a touch and obvious attention to the menu, preparation, and presentation. Lose the cafe stools, warm it up, and pour on the service. Still, great because of the excellent food.

Sportello did not disappoint. the cheese fondue was so rich and creamy and the homemade pastas were excellent. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu and wines. Every bite is savory. The space is small and best for no more than 3 people, counter style seating, for a unique flair. The price of the entrees are not too high and well worth it for the quality of food. We had an excellent server who was personable, friendly and extremely helpful with the menu options. The food is amazing - Barbara Lynch definitely does not disappoint. I bought her cookbook "Stir" in hopes I can recreate at least one dish! The spicy tomato soup was great, the pastas are homemade and are amazing (highly recommend the gnocchi). We ordered desserts to go from the bakery, including pumpkin whoopie pies and pine nut pie -- both ridiculously good! I would go back to this restaurant in a heartbeat, and would highly recommend it to anyone in Boston.
