A word from Spoon Bar & Kitchen
Spoon Bar & Kitchen is a modern American seafood restaurant owned by five star, James Beard nominated chef John Tesar. The menu focuses on responsibly sourced seafood and highlights quality seasonal ingredients at the peak of flavor and other dishes that are not fish. The menu changes frequently based on seafood availability and there’s a nightly Chef's Tasting Menu with or without wine pairings.

The restaurant has several unique dining experiences including a built in raw bar, with a Chef's Counter, banquette tables and booths in the main dining room, a Chef's Table in the Wine Room and an interactive Kitchen Counter where you can watch the live action in the Kitchen.

  • "The food was what I've come to expect from "celebrity" chefs. While we appreciated a selection you don't normally find in Dallas, it seemed the appearance of the dish was the highest priority. Some items, while very good, were just difficult to eat. I've been to plenty of 5-star restaurants but never experienced that problem to this extent. That being said, we DID enjoy the food (charred octopus, tuna with foie gras, artic char, squid ink fettucini with mussels) and were pleasantly surprised by several entremets, particularly the chocolate mousse with salted caramel foam "pre-desert". The staff was very accommodating and wanting to please. The ambiance was just too cold and austere for me, particularly when they sat us in the front window."

The presentation for each dish was very artistic. We can't wait to go back. They accommodated my allergy buy substituting another dish for that course."

  • "Wined and dined a client at Spoon a few nights ago. The space is gorgeous. The food is almost as stunning but slightly misses its mark. The first course options we tried were delicious and I ncluded sashimi, scallop and octopus. The main course options did not impress me in comparison to other restaurant options at same price point. I splurged and had the lobster. I cannot recommend it. The peach dessert was fantastic but the vanilla dessert was ok. The best way I can describe the food overall is good but not post-it-on-Facebook delicious. The service was the deciding factor for my experience. Our waitress was condescending and rude for no apparent reason. I was embarrassed for her and surprised the owners have her in a waitstaff role."

  • "Tried the 6 course tasting menu. 3 of the 6 items were under-cooked and one of the items, (cuttle fish), was uncomfortably chewy, felt like I was eating fishy sinew. The item flavors were interesting and inventive unfortunately item execution failed. On the positive side: we loved the skate course and the desserts were outstanding. The service was great, very polished, efficient without being rushed. Nice but slightly overpriced wine list. I had a great Manhattan - yum! Overall, we had fun. The tasting menu price is similar to other top-restaurants tasting menus but it seemed very pricey for such a weak attempt. This time the kitchen let the rest of the restaurant down. We probably won't return."

  • "The chef's tasting menu and wine pairing was decadent, perfect for what we were looking for on the eve of our anniversary. Beginning with a tuna tartar amuse bouche, like butter, our palates were readied for a variety of tastes and textures to follow. Our live diver scallop, served with a brown butter and truffle sauce, literally melted in our mouths. The Maya prawns with kimchee was both unexpected and delicious and had a great kick. Pace yourselves if you go this route because the portion sizes are generous and the final course before desert, the arctic char is divine with a perfect pea puree. Added bonus, we picked the half booth just behind the chef's table and it was perfect! One of the best food experiences we've had in some time."

The refreshing fennel salad was a perfect starter to prepare the palette for the delicious arctic Char. The service too was spot on with just the right attentiveness and appropriate interventions. The seafood was skillfully prepared exactly to our likely. Many of the preparations are unique and represent John Tesar's iconic style. We sat at the chef's bar - and I only wish I was taller (or less stuff was on the bar) so we could have gotten a better view. But it was great fun! Wines are a bit on the pricey side (3-4x retail markup)."

  • "I tried to avoid the dishes that notable reviewers had panned but still ran into inconsistency among the "safe" choices during our visit. The sturgeon/pork belly entree was good as advertised, and the snail appetizer was very good, but the geoduck and yellowtail crudos suffered from quality and execution issues, and the skate was crispified to the point where I had to saw through it with a regular knife (usually fish knives are suitable for skate); the accompanying tomato compote was extremely bland. I gave two stars for service because our waiter was preoccupied with an adjacent large party and two starts for ambience because our booth was incredibly sunken from one too many large posteriors and it was in dire need of replacement padding."

  • "Service was impeccable. The food was amazing and worth the visit. Absolutely off the charts. The "chefs table" is a concept I dont think they execute well and should be avoided. You can't see over it into the kitchen due to a high bar wall and its completely obvious the staff doesnt want you there with the turned backs and sideways glances. Nothing was ever said or made known, but there was an air of passive aggressiveness that made things uncomfortable. Got a great view of the heat lamps, vulcan broilers and commercial vent hoods. I thought it was a rare option to be presented with when we arrived and jumped at the chance to see the masters at work, but being seated at the regular tables would have been more enjoyable."

  • "Chef Tesar truly is genius. Beyond beautiful and delicious food found here. Every course amazed and delighted us in every way. We had starters, salad and entrees, as I had done the chef's tasting menu before and it is a lot of food! We chose the spicy chili lobster and soft shell crab for starters, the heirloom tomato salad, and our entrees were arctic char and seared scallops. We elected to have the sommelier pair wines with our courses. Our waiter was superb... extremely knowledgeable and suggested we share the first three dishes, which were presented to our table beautifully. He then divided them onto our plates for us. This is memorable dining for special occasions. Foodies rejoice!"

Toward end of meal, My dinner companion was finished. My plate was about half full. I was still eating. In fact, I was still chewing my food. She came to clear table. Asked if I was finished. After I swallowed, I told her I was still eating. She asked if we wanted dessert."

  • "My wife, son and I dinned on May 24, 2014 to celebrate a family occasion. We made reservation for 8:00pm but did not get seated till 8:20pm. We waited 30 minutes from the time appetizers/salad was served to the time entre was served. They were not that busy. Sampler Crudo was average. Seafood was good but not the freshest that we have ever had. Asparagus with morel mushroom salad was a little bland. Sturgeon Pork Belly was way overcooked making the fish very tough. Sauce was very average with too much butter. Seems like that only sauce in this dish was clarified butter. Another bland dish. Squid ink dish was very similar to Sturgeon Pork Belly dish, too much clarified butter with bland seasonings. Soft shell crab in this dish was oily. "
