A word from Spina
Spina is a fresh Italian pasta house located in the East Village. Fresh pastas handmade by Blanca Rincon are decadently adorned with sauces and ragus. Small plates focus on Italy's love affair with seafood as well. General Manager Matthew Harrell's wine list goes international and local with some expert selections from traditional wine regions as well as the Finger Lakes located in upstate New York.

Spina's brick walled, cozy dining room contains a fresh pasta bar where guests can watch Blanca prepare fresh pasta throughout their dining experience.

  • "Since the demise of Capucine's it has been difficult to find a walk-to restaurant in the Stuy Town area to replace it. Spina seems to be the one. Every dish we ate in our group of six was delicious from the branzino to several different pastas. But the restaurant is small and popular so a reservation is a must. If you want to have conversation without shouting, I suggest going during the week. We were there on a Saturday night and there was a young, energetic crowd that made the noise level hard to deal with for the three of us in our group who are seniors."

  • "My girlfriend and I went to Spina for Valentine's Day and it was perfect. The staff was helpful in answering all of the questions that had and the food was delicious. It is a small place with a great feel to it. It was perfect for a special occasion or a regular date night. I wouldn't recommend bringing large families because of the intimate scene. And make sure you eat the bread!"

  • "service was spot on and some food was a total hit, but we went on valentine's day and were so disappointed by the menu (no pasta!!!!!!!). Also, the dessert was inedible. Had a delicious and perfectly cooked steak and our waitress and the host were so sweet that I hate to say review like this. A little naive about their wine list, but we ended up having a great bottle. Will have to go back on a regular night to see the full potential of this place."

  • "Excellent Pastas - I'd skip the main course, and just order double pasta course. Don't miss the gnochi - rarely found made correctly stateside. Also, do not pass on the ricotta spread for the home made foccacia. You will diet tomorrow. Desserts are lovely!!! Expansive wine list, but be careful, they tried to substitute a different vintage without alerting me. Also, we would have had an after dinner drink, but they overbook the tables so you are on a time deadline."

  • "This is definitely going on my informal East Village Hidden Gems list. I'd strongly consider it again for an intimate two or four-person dinner type situation. It's very chill and casual. And there's plenty more on that menu that I'd love to try. But I'll always set the party off with those mussels."

  • "In the city for weekend and wanted a fun restaurant for the night. Spina was a great choice with delicious food, good wine and a fun ambiance! The pasta is made from scratch and was outstanding, easily the best dish of the night. Had a good bruschetta with winter squash on top to start off and was happily pleased. Waitress was busy hoping between our table and a party of 8, so getting her attention was challenging at times, but she was a great help when we are able to speak. Overall, a highly recommended spot and will definitely be returning in the future!"

  • "Went here last weekend on a first date and was very impressed. Pros: extensive wine list, homemade pasta (cavatelli/gnocchi), very good tiramisu for dessert, phenomenal service (never felt rushed, yet very attentive). Cons (nit-picking): the frito misto (fried calamari/shrimp/fish) was excellent for antipasto, but had to ask for a side of marinara for dipping when it really should just come with it in the first place, tight dining quarters, but that's to be expected for a Saturday night in the city... Overall a great dining experience!"

  • "For food-loving friends in town from San Francisco, and both knowledgeable about wine and flavor, we immediately thought of Spina. The evening was perfect: we ordered three pastas (the always outstanding pomodoro, the malloreddus, and the sausage/broccoli with gluten-free parpadelle), the chicken, and the steak. All were delectable and distinctive. The steak was particularly pleasing to the three meat-eaters. Our bruschetta appetizer of butternut squash set up the rest of the meal, as did the beet salad. We were steered perfectly in a choice of wine and ordered a second bottle of the same without hesitation. This place always gets it right, and they really know what they are doing."

Not only is each menu item thoughfully crafted, but the wait staff has thorough knowledge of the cooking processes and takes the time to answer customers' questions. In the summers, they have outdoor seating lining the periphery of the restaurant. During my most recent visit to Spina, $60 bottles of wine we half off. Great spot for intimate family gatherings or a romantic yet casual date."

  • "Overall the food was very good. Steak was very good, tender and had a subtle sweet flavor. The calamari appetizer was flavorful and did not require any dipping sauce for flavor enhancement. The gluten free pasta was not as good as it has been in the past but the sauce made up for it. The service was outstanding. It was a wonderful place to have a Christmas Eve family dinner."

  • "I was apprehensive at first, with a couple of small details missed: minimal eye-contact from the hostess; no help with my coat; no food menu upon sitting; and a good five-plus minutes before anyone offered water or inquired as to a drink choice (and I was sitting at the bar). But my apprehension faded as I spoke with my server/bartender about the wine list - which has a broad range and jam-packed with good choices. He was very thorough, listening to my preferences and offered great suggestions. This extended to the menu which has creative, but successful pairings well-executed. This is an excellent neighborhood spot and you feel like family by the time you leave. If you live in the neighborhood, go once-a-week."

All wines over $50 were half price so we had an amazing red that we wouldn't have chosen at full price. The pasta was fresh and delightful. The bruschetta was amazing. Spina was superb in every way. The pear ravioli was sublime and the squid ink pasta was delicious. Spina looks and feels like a real neighborhood gem - a super place for a date, a group of friends or for out-of-town guests. Places like this remind me why I stay in New York."

  • "I visited this restaurant twice in 4 days. Love the food, service and atmosphere. The menu offers a wonderful choice of food - without being so extensive you can't make up your mind. The Autumn salad is wonderful and the entrees are beautifully presented and just the right amount of food!. So far tried the Ricotta Cavatelle; Pear Ravioli and Chestnut Papperdelle - all wonderful flavor."
