A word from Spike Africa's Fresh Fish Grill & Bar
Spike Africa …”President of the Pacific Ocean” was the last of the great schooner boat captains sailing out of the West Coast. He learned to sail by shipping out on the “K.V. Kruse”, a five masted schooner freighting lumber from Seattle to Alaska. Spike is best known for his adventurous voyage with the actor Sterling Hayden and their families ending in Tahiti in 1958, and chronicled in Hayden’s classic sea novel “The Wanderer”. As a “Seabee” Lieutenant in WWII Spike fought in the bloody battle of Peleliu Island as depicted in the HBO mini-series “Pacific”. A part time novice actor, Spike appeared in the film “Cinderella Liberty”. He was a legend in virtually every West Coast Port known as a free spirited “last of the breed” sailor. Thank you for coming in today and please enjoy some great food and drink in Spike’s honor.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I saw many good reviews on Yelp for this restaurant so maybe my expectations were primed. No specific complaints - I was just expecting really good food and thought it was just OK."

  • "We've tried Spike Africa 3 times and each time, I think it was worse than before! We shared the fish and chips - both lukewarm at best and greasy! Our waitress was very nice but after she took our order, we never saw her! They have runners to deliver the food, which I know is very common, but no one ever stops by your table to see if you need anything or check on the food once its been delivered. Not a good practice at all. Too many good restaurants in the Gaslamp. I think we will take this one off our "go to" list!"

  • "We had a great time at spike africa's, It has a fun vibe. The oysters were amazing, my scallops were not the best I have ever eaten, but the brussel sprouts that came with them made up for it. My boyfriend had the lobster roll and he really enjoyed it. The service was great, I would recommend."

  • "Ask the server about the whole fish of the day. If you are not too late the chef may come out with the entire fish and depending on the size you can order the whole fish or a portion cut and cooked to order"

  • "Great place especially for groups. We had our team dinner here and it was just right. Used OT to make our ressie and they had us set up in a perfect spot. The service was great and the food was fantastic. Must try for great seafood!"

  • "Really good! Food was excellent. Back room was noisy, staff was kind enough to move us to a quieter spot."

  • "Fish was well cooked and very fresh. Clam chowder very rich and tasty. Ate at bar and found patrons to be friendly . Not overcrowded like gaslamp."

  • "We were a group of three, and there during happy hour. All food items ordered were repeatable. Wine pours were on the skimpy side - even at happy hour prices."

  • "The menu for Valentines Day was a price fix 4 course menu which included, soup or salad, appetizer, entree and dessert. With a health selection of fresh fish to select from we found a perfect balance of food, service and energy. We will definitely visit again and consider the evening a bargain as compared to comparable restaurants in the area."

  • "We made Valentines Day reservations well ahead and only found out on the 14th when we asked to add one more to our party that they had a set price fixed menu for $44. The food was great but we waited over an hour for the main course because our server's error which she apologized for. All in all we were there three hous (7pm until 10 pm). That said we would try it again on a normal night because the food was delicious."

  • "I love a seafood restaurant that doesn't make you question where the fish came from. The quality of seafood at Spike Africa's is tip-top! Took advantage of happy hour drinks, then stayed for dinner. Must start with the Brussels sprouts. The simmer was delicious - the only way it could've been better is if it were raining. Homemade BBQ potato chips, and the butterscotch pudding will make you moan. Literally. Great service, too!! Thanks, Bryan!"

  • "attentive server, yummy homemade BBQ potato chips. We enjoyed our fish and chips entree and calamari sandwich. one guest got complimentary ice cream & berries for a birthday treat! would return to try other interesting menu items."

  • "This food is EXCELLENT and the atmosphere PERFECT for hosting a lunch meeting. I wouldn't recommend for a large group, as lunch hour can get busy (lots of voices). I had a one-on-one meeting over lunch with a senior staff member and Spike Africa's was the perfect fit. Due to the great service and food, your guest will feel like they're getting a real treat BUT the prices aren't inflated. Too many restaurants in the Gaslamp District are overpriced and fail to deliver in food quality and/or service. Spike Africa's manages both aspects of a quality dining experience."

  • "Both my wife and I enjoyed the appetizer (ceviche served with many spiced corn chips), our entrees, and our drinks. Server checked on us regularly, in spite of being seated at the table in the back corner (where I requested). Even though it was Sunday at 6pm, happy hour pricing was still in effect. Portions were generous enough to share without being monstrous. Food tasted fresh and delicious. Just one block from Balboa Theatre (our evening destination). Both my wife and I rated it "a worthy find" and decided that we will be returning soon. Only downside was that the music was on the border of being too loud to carry on a conversation."

  • "Spike Africa's is a great place for happy hour. They have specials on appetizers and $1 oysters! Our waiter informed our group of a yelp promotion, so we got their homemade BBQ chips and onion dip complimentary. Delicious! Because it was my birthday, our waiter also dropped off dessert with spoons to share! The vanilla ice cream was delicious and it came with some amazing coconut covered chocolate balls with chili oil infused in the coconut. They were so good, and had the tiniest bit of heat that they were still enjoyable. I plan on returning for happy hour again."

  • "We've bee to Spike Africa's Fresh Fish Grill & Bar twice now, and both times we enjoyed the creatively prepared appetizer/tapas sized dishes which were all delicious including the blackened fish tacos. Cocktails were good as well. This place has become a favorite and we will be back soon."

  • "Great location. Great looking food. Good prices for entrees. Nice employees. But, long waits for drink refills, dessert and final check. Food looked great, but sauces drowned the salmon and mahi mahi. Fish was tasty but sauces made it hard to know what we were eating. With so many choices in the Gaslamp District, we would go somewhere else."

  • "Went in on a Saturday found out they had happy hour still going strong. Our hostess and waitress were so nice and efficient knowing that we wanted to make the most of the happy hour food deals! Everything we ordered came out fast and most importantly DELICIOUS! Highly reccomend the brussel sprouts, poke, and the $1 oysters! Yumm"

  • "I'm so glad that I just happened to read Frommer's guide on-line while planning our trip to San Diego! The restaurant was not mentioned in the book version. We all raved about our food! Great selection and prepared to perfection! My son said it was the best albacore tuna he's ever had! A really fun environment too and right on the edge of the Gaslamp District. Don't miss this place if you visit San Diego!"

  • "I'm a local SD downtown resident. Picked Spike Africa's for New Year's Eve dinner. The meals were great. The salad dressing was a perfect citrus balsamic which went well with the pears and kale. I had the scallops with pork over the polenta and it was all cooked to perfection. The house white wine was a great pairing for the meal. 3 adults and 1 child on NYE dined happily for under $150. Super value. Can't wait to check out their happy hour."

  • "The food was pretty good, but not extraordinary. Scallops & pork belly dish was succulent & melted in your mouth good! The bass was slightly overcooked, so on dry side. Pumpkin & crab bisque was good, just needed a hint of salt. Duck confit it pie was just okay, the meat didn't stand out like "duck confit" usually does and could have been any other type of meat. The drinks was dangerously delicious! The service was very good, our waiter was attentive & polite. There was live blues band, which was a lot of fun & good energy. Overall, enjoyed the experience, the food could have been better."

  • "Excellent Fresh Fish. I like the fact that they are sustainabilty concsious. Not happy that we had to pay 14 dollars to park as the parking in the Gaslamp district is extortive. Meal was great and service excellent. Good value as compared to the other restaurants that "a la carte" you to death."

  • "I eat out so often and so well that I have become some what of a food snob. That said, I enjoyed my meal at Spike's. The atmosphere is loud so I wouldn't bring anyone with whom I wanted to have an intimate conversation. Food was fresh, my fish may have been slightly overcooked, but tasty nonetheless. The pudding is as advertised-delicious! I would come here just to sit at the bar. Location is great."

  • "Ive walked by this place many times and it looks like a pub that serves food. In fact, the food is excellent-far better than just good pub food. We were a party of 5 and everyone ordered a different grilled fish. You could pick your sauce and side. Everyone loved their food. I had Ono with Citrix butter and grilled tomatoes and artichokes. It was well prepared and very plentiful. I usually order fish because it's good for me, not because I love it. This fish was yummy. The place has a friendly pub vibe so it's a great choice for meeting friends."

  • "Food was great. Would have given it a top rating except that it took a very long time to get a server to come to our table. we had to flag one down after about 10-15 minutes of waiting to order drinks. Not sure what happened as we had a reservation for a very large group but then several tables/groups who arrived after us were waited on well before us. felt like we slipped through the cracks. once we had a server everything was great. The food was the best seafood i have ever had."

  • "We took the whole family here for my birthday and we couldn't have been more pleased with the food. Everything was delicious: Opah, Thresher, Mahi Mahi, even the steak. The sides complemented perfectly and proportions were just right so that with a shared appetizer of BBQ chips we were all able to clean our plates and enjoy the signature homemade butterscotch pudding. My wife was in love with the caramel on the pudding and it was great to have the pudding itself not be super sweet so it wasn't too sweet overall."

  • "This was another great dining experience at our new favorite Sea Food restaurant in San Diego! I had the Blackened Shark (which i hesitated to order Shark) but was very pleasantly surprised and satisfied as this was a delicious dish that was perfectly prepared and presented. Service was excellent and the Management Staff should be commended as they are very attentive and make sure that everything is done just right, they are friendly & personable and contribute to an awesome dining experience."

  • "The restaurant had a great upscale, modern vibe. We had oysters as an appetizer - very good. My salmon was absolutely delicious, my boyfriends thresher shark was very good but I think they overdressed it with sauce."
