Diner Reviews
  • "I was disappointed in the ambiance of Spice. We dined at the Union Square location and were seated upstairs where the cushions were worn and sad looking. The food was ok but not outstanding."

  • "The person that sat us down was very rude but our waiter was attentive and excellent"

  • "Spice was perfect for a couple of drinks if you are in the Union Square area. The space is tight even though on two floors. The furniture is cheap/plastic and to be honest, the food was average. The service was slow as we sat for a full 10 minutes before anyone said hello. I was there on a Thursday on a rare warm NYC night and the energy was upbeat. I wouldn't break my neck to eat there again but I might stop by the bar for a drink."

  • "I love Spice!! Their food never disappoints. It's always on point. I will definitely be back."

  • "I.had.a.great time as i.usually do. Every new dish i try - i make it a habit to try something different everytime- is delish ! i love coming with friends and afterwards the location allows me.to bar hop all over the place !"

  • "Though I really like this restaurant and I understand that it's very busy, it's frustrating to make a reservation and then not get your table for weird caveats. I understand not seating the table until everyone is there but if you're holding the table, that shouldn't be a problem, regardless of whether everyone orders their meals immediately. Also, since we were a party of 7, we were going to be seated on the roof, however since one of us was in the bathroom (in the restaurant), we lost that table because we all had to get into the elevator to the rooftop at the same time. Very odd policies that would perhaps be less confusing if were made known at the time of making the reservation."

  • "The food is always good which is probably why the place was so packed but it was almost uncomfortably so. The staff handled it well though and somehow, even though the music was audible, it wasn't overwhelming."

  • "We went here on a Friday night with a group of friends. We absolutely loved the food and the prices and will be going back for sure!!!!!!!"

  • "I made reservations through OpenTable, I arrived a little before my reservation and was seated immediately! This is amazing considering the crowd this restaurant attracts on a friday/saturday night. Service was prompt and courteous. I love dining here and will recommend Spice Union Square to anyone who loves good food at a great price."

  • "I went to Spice with a small group on Saturday night after an outing. We were seated in about five minutes (had a reservation), but then waited a long time for a waiter. We wanted to talk about what we had done that day, but it was so loud we could hardly hear each other without shouting. The food was not bad at all (I enjoyed the crispy duck), and it wasn't crazily overpriced, so I'd recommend it for reasonably inexpensive, enjoyable food in a pinch. I made the reservation that morning, so I was glad to have a viable option on a Saturday night."

  • "Seating was very tight, kinda felt like the waiter was sitting on my shoulder to take the dinner order of the diners next to us. Too dark to read the menu and I thought it was just my eye sight but when the other diners across from us took up their phone to use the flash light to read the check, I was confirmed. Music was so loud I felt like we were at a lounge instead how having a quant dinner and pleasant conversation"

  • "This is more of a high school cafeteria. Food was 'spicy' so technically warm, but not to touch. Everything had the same sauce . The only difference was in quantity. The quality of the mets was very questionable and I am not surely dog would have been impressed. Very disappointing will never return."

  • "Dined at Spice-Union Square on Saturday. The scene was hopping and the food was delicious. Amazingly, using open table, we were seated right away during a very busy time frame around 7:30. The wait staff was very accommodating and service was quite speedy. Delicious and unique pad thai with shrimp. Can definitely recommend."

  • "I love coming to Spice. The food is always great no matter what I try there. You get quick efficient service and overall pleasant experience. The wait can be long so make reservervations or get there early!"

  • "First - the hostess was unbelievably rude! I was shocked. In this day of social media and the internet - all businesses have to be on their best behavior. The food was not up to par for a SPICE restaurant. The Chelesa location is far superior to this one. The food tasted like it came off a buffet and they just put it on the plate for you. It was very embarassing having a business lunch there - I thought it would be like the other Spice locations."

  • "In a city with endless options for good eating, no need to eat here. Food is unremarkable. Very noisy (not energetic, as suggested by the online rating system)."

  • "Great place for a girls night out or date night... Lots of shareable items moderately priced. Great mojitos!"

  • "The food was great as always. I made reservations online in advance and unfortunately my party and I had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. The waiter was kind enough and gave us an option to order while waiting. Very nice but remove the option to reserve if Spice is unable to hold tables for their guest. It was pretty embarrassing for us."

  • "Great place for average thai food. I am half thai and know how dishes should be made. Had spring rolls as an appetizer. There was way too much sauce on the rolls and on the plate. Sauce wasn't that good and it over powered the taste. Would not get that again. Also had the panang curry. Sauce was too thick but it was decent. Service was good and would go back if I am in the area but would choose another thai spot like Pam's Real Thai Food if I had the choice."

  • "I made a reservation for 10. 8 of us showed up and I let the hostess know that the remaining 2 we're running late. They refused to seat us until our whole party showed up. Very disappointing . When we finally got seated upstairs, we sat at the table for a whole 15 mins and no waitress came over to even ask us if we wanted water. I had to physically get up and ask the lady on her phone at the booth if she was our waitress. And of course she was! Even though they messed up our orders a couple times the food was delicious and the ambiance on the rooftop level was really nice. Those are the only good things about this place! Not as happy as I thought I would be."

  • "I Had A Wonderful time at spice. It was my friends first time being there and they loved the food. The service wasn't so good. My waiter was great but the busboys and food runners were very rude. I mean I go to Spice a lot and this is t the first time I've had horrible service. But this was just my braking point. And I had wrote in the special request bar that it was my friends birthday and I didn't get any type of warning if there was going to be something special or not. I brought my own cake and no one even asked me if I wanted anything special for him. I mean I will always go back for the food but most likely take it to go."

  • "I brought a group of friends, 9 in total, to celebrate a birthday over lunch. They sat us right next to the kitchen and placed one of our seats right in front of the entryway blocking access to the kitchen. One person had to move their seat to the other end of the table. Food was not very tasty and server never checked on us to see if we needed other items. It was far from being a good birthday celebration and I had to apologize. Thank goodness our company was good. Disappointing. I'll stick with the midtown spice next time."

  • "Loved the food & drinks (I had the chicken pad thai and strawberry margarita-- both were delicious), but the place was incredibly jam packed and we were RUSHED by the wait staff. Granted it was a Friday night, but definitely not a place I'd choose to go back to again for dinner-- it was just painfully clear that the wait staff just wanted us to eat and get out. They literally stood a foot from us and pointed at our table for several minutes. When we got up to leave, they came over and started taking our chairs (to set up for a large party) while we were still standing there putting our coats on. Not a favorable experience."

  • "We made a reservation for 8:30 and were not seated until after 8:50. After being seated, our waitress took nearly 10 minutes to acknowledge us. We ordered wine for the table and our waitress did not bring it until our food arrived. Our food was also cold. Would not recommend."

  • "First time dining at the Union Square location and it will be the last. Food was disguisting- fried duck was burned to a crisp, salad was drenched in dressing. Service was the absolute worse!!! After sending our food back and waiting on drinks the waitress asked us how much longer we were going to be b/c other people were waiting to be seated. Ummm we are waiting on our food Miss. I don't know how much longer we will be how about you ask your chef and don't rush your guest (how rude). I will never step a foot in this place again. Go to the one on the UWS stay away from union square location!!!!!!"

  • "Food was great but the service was not good. More like a Chinese fast food restaurant regarding service. Also even with a reservation we had a 25-30 min wait. Should not bother making reservation due to the fact that you have to wait as long as a walk in."
    Dined on 12/30/2013
  • "The food was excellent. Service was sub par. Spice is a very small place (make a reservation!) and on this particular night, there was only 1 waitress handling 6 tables. We had to wait awhile to even receive our drinks, but once we ordered everything was fine. Also, don't sit downstairs in the winter! Every time the door opens, the cold air rushes in! Sit upstairs if you can."

  • "We made reservations two weeks in advance for a party of five for my 20-yr-old daughter's birthday. Originally, reservation was for 5:30 but we changed our reservation to 7:30 the day after we made it through open table. When we arrived, and gave our name/number to the receptionist, she scowled and said they had cancelled out our reservation since we were two hours late. I told her we had changed this two weeks ago, and again, she just scowled. Communication is not one of their strong points. She just shrugged her shoulders and said there was nothing she could do (even though there were tables). I showed her the confirmation for 7:30 and she grudgingly gave us a table. Food was good, but why the attitude for this upscale cafeteria?"

  • "The experience was decent. I made a reservation but they still say me near the door. And they had a tendency to keep that door open even though it was snowing.... The food was good though!"

  • "I arrived earlier to make sure everything was ready since it was our office Christmas party (14 people) which I have indicated when I made the reservation. The manager was rude and said that the table was not ready. Even when everyone has arrived we were not seated, instead he let us wait in the cramped entrance area. Since he kept ignoring us we called Rin Thai. They immediately accommodated us and we had a great time. Spice is off my list of restaurants."

  • "I booked a table for 12 people and only 8 showed up, which didn't cause a problem for us to be seated. The only issue I had was that the hostess was under the impression that I had cancelled my reservation which I hadn't so we had to wait to be seated at our table. It was only 15 minutes. In this location it is very loud and dark. However I was pleasently surprised when we were lead upstairs and then into the elevator to the rooftop area. If you can definitely try to get seated up there. It was amazing. We had a great table, it was quiet and well lit and had a great view into the city. The service was quick and the food was delicious. Overall I highly reccomend this place."

  • "We ordered Chicken Sa-Tae and Calamari as appetizers with Beef and Shrimp Siamese Fried Rice. The Fried rice is amazing! The Chicken Sa-Tae is delicious particularly the peanut dipping sauce. The calamari left much to be desired. The best part of the meal was the dessert, Banana Cheesecake. Must Try! At the end of our meal we were very happy and very full for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend Spice! The only downside is that the dining area is so small the tables are arranged with merely elbow space between tables so its gets uncomfortable at times and very loud with conversations spilling over from each table right beside you. There is upper-level dining I have yet to try, maybe better?"

  • "The food was great! The service left a lot of be desired. It took almost 20 minutes to put in a drink order and another 20 to get the cocktails. Drink orders were not correct. Apps and entrees arrived ALL at the same time, and left me with my dinning dish almost on my lap. Otherwise the food was fantastic. The spicy basil dish had just enough spice to keep on lingering, and the curry dish was devoured. Other dishes were good, but not a memorable."
