Diner Reviews
  • "Honestly I am amazed with Spiazzo. The staff was extremely friendly and amazing. The whole experience was worth the money. It's a little on the pricey side, but the food was delicious and the portions are fairly large."

  • "A few women friends and I spent the day in the City and decided to head to the West Portal area for lunch. The restaurant was not very busy, and we received a lot of attention from the wait staff, which was nice. Each of us ordered a different dish for lunch and we all enjoyed our meals. We would definitely return for lunch or dinner. This was a good find."

  • "My daughter recently moved near the restaurant and we were having dinner to celebrate her birthday a few days earlier. I was hoping to go somewhere nearby so she might be able to revisit with friends, etc. Spiazzo had good reviews so we tried it. Very Italian menu, a plus. If you have any sense of adventure, try the poached pears (not the menu title)! Every bite was a feast of flavor! Amazing! I had a risotto that was flavored partially with Italian sausage that was equally amazing. I'm a risotto snob, being pretty darn good at making it myself, and this was Really Good! The service was a great blend of attentive without hovering. The waiter helped with Italian wine selection too. Look forward to returning!"

  • "What a great find! I chose the restaurant based on Yelp reviews and proximity to a venue where I was attending a meeting. The restaurant could not have been more accommodating to our group thatgrew from 13 to 18..I had explained that we needed to get in and out in an hour. When we arrived the table was ready, beverages poured and they were ready to take our orders. Food was outstanding and portions were generous. Carol"

  • "After over 20 years of enjoyment, I will no longer recommend this place to others. Since moving down the peninsula, I don't frequent this place as often but it has gone downhill. It is definitely no longer worth the effort of a trip into SF even while visiting family or friends in the area."

  • "We were treated like queens. Our server was wonderful: charming and helpful. The food was delicious, and the wine recommendation perfect. We had reservations for mid-week and would recommend them - the restaurant was surprisingly (well, maybe not given the experience) busy. Will definitely return."

  • "Great place for a special little dinner - food is always good, ambience is friendly, and the house wine was both well-priced and excellent. Neighborhood gem for sure."

  • "The location is easier to park near than North Beach Italian Restaurants. We were greeted warmly and efficiently. Service was very good; we didn't have to ask for more bread or drink refills. The Caesar Salad was fine but nothing spectacular; although the dressing was lacking in flavor, the lettuce was fresh and crisp. I had the scrumptious Scaloppine Piccatina, which combined tender veal, a flavorful sauce, capers and artichokes, and was served with carrot mashed potatoes and flavorful vegetables. The Alaskan salmon with a wine and mustard sauce is not on the standard menu. I like mustard on my sandwiches, but was not drawn to order this on my fish. But after tasting this creation, I found it absolutely delicious. I would return again!"

  • "We are lucky we came early because the place nearly filled up by 6:30 on a Monday night. The service was extremely attentive. I had the Zuppa di Pesci - an interesting mixed seafood dish in a spicy tomato broth over spaghetti. Delicious! My wife's dish was the veal scallopini with artichoke hearts. We were disappointed with the veal itself, but the sauce was scrumptious. The house Chianti was light and smooth. The restaurant is near one end of West Portal and we had a pleasant walk in the neighborhood after. The view outside isn't much since the Muni light rail cars are arriving or leaving the nearby station every few minutes."

  • "The food was fantastic and the service was definitely above average. I had a valentines day dinner here so I made a reservation so we didn't have to wait. But we had to wait like 5 mins for our table, which would have been fine, but they don't really have any seating or any area for waiting so we were kinda just blocking the entrance which was awkward. And it was quite loud but that's because it was super busy on account of valentines day. I had a great experience. I saw the owner running around and being apart of the service which I thought was nice to see. Overall, great restaurant for some decently priced authentic italian food."

  • "This restaurant was run meticuously on a very busy Valentines night. We were seated and tended to quickly by smiling people. The menu is varied with one whole page of specials to choose from. We started with a shared Cesar Salad (served on two small plates which is always the best!). For the main dish my husband had a Prawn/ Scallop Angel Hair Pasta dish and I had Salmon with artichoke served with mashed potatoes and fresh lightly cooked vegetables. The food was quite simply -perfect. We had a beautiful bottle of wine, and enjoyed seeing the Valentines of every age celebrating in this cozy busy restaurant. Tables were cleared quickly but we never felt rushed, A good natured wait staff is the punctuation mark for the experience. Fun Night!"

  • "We went to Spiazzo this past Saturday night and had a wonderful experience, as we did the last time we went. The warm bread with their special dipping sauce was terrific. Then, for my first course, I had the pear salad which was delightful, followed by the scampi style prawns. The sauce was absolutely delicious. For dessert, I had the crème brulee and really enjoyed that, as well. Our server was fantastic. Besides us and at least one other table, he had a giant table of young girls to handle. When I saw them come in, I was fully prepared to be ignored the rest of the meal, but he somehow managed to give all of lots of attention and never once forgot us. Very nice restaurant."

  • "My group had several items: the calamari misti was an ample portion of fried calamari, with a few fried popcorn shrimp and razor-thin fried red onion thrown in (YUM!). The bruschetta had a tomato based component, a mushroom-based component and two dipping sauces. It was out of this world. The spaghetti an meatballs was superb. The seafood pizza was insanely delicious, presented with an array of meticulously placed mussels still in their shells, along with other delights. The sole was light and tender. The San Geovese reserve wine was the perfect accompaniment. Our wait staff was in a delicate dance around the table, timing their arrivals perfectly. I HIGHLY recommend monthly trips here for all locals and a "must" for tourists!"

  • "My family and I have been patrons since 2010. We always look forward to our meals at Spiazzo because of the nice service and, of course, the food. We have never been disappointed. While some people may look to trendiness and so on for a dining experience, we are quite satisfied with the traditional which Spiazzo offers. Its simplistic yet varied menu with food in very nice portions and moderate prices are what attract us. We don't need newfangled 'gourmet' fare."

  • "I selected Spiazzo for a Saturday evening birthday celebration for its location (convenient for our plans) and the great reviews. We arrived at 4:30pm for early supper. The host/waiter was very attentive and accommodating. The menu is extensive so it took some time to decide. The calamari appetizer was incredible. Our entrees were amazing. The large prawns and scallops served over the pasta were plentiful & cooked perfectly. The duck entrée served over risotto with porcini sauce was also excellent. The portions are big enough to share (but better for left-overs )…. Just save room for the amazing desserts. Best Tiramusu I have ever had! Prices are very reasonable given portions and how delicious the food is! Can’t wait to return!"

  • "After arriving at Spiazzo, I realized that I had dined there over 10 years ago, but never made it back. I wonder why, because the food was really good, and moderately priced. I took a friend there for a birthday dinner, and even though she ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, it didn't break my budget. Of course, I ordered pasta, but with lots of scallops and shrimp, my pasta was only $15.95. And it was really good!"

  • "We have eaten at Spiazzo many times and never been disappointed. Food is delicious and the service attentive but not intrusive. Excellent pastas. A relaxing neighborhood restaurant that is worth a special trip even if you don't live nearby."

  • "Really nice neighborhood restaurant, convenient location close to west portal muni tunnel. Prompt service but they took away plates when not everyone was finished and gave the impression that once you've eaten they want your table straight away. Which is ashame because the food was actually good but they ruined the whole experience by rushing the service."

  • "Come here 3-4 times a year for special visits with friends and the food. service and relaxing ambiance never fail to impress my guests and me. This is a gem of a place and I wish I had more time to eat here often. The portions are large enough to satisfy your hunger and small enough you don't feel guilty afterwards. Love it here."

  • "Where you are seated does make a difference. We were placed in the middle where eveyone walks (or I should say runs) from the kitchen to the dining room. Back and forth, 20 to 30 times. Creating a breeze, bumping into our chairs contantly or our arms as we are trying to eat. A busser almost fell he was walking too fast and trying to take the corner, had he fallen, he would have taken our table with him. It is best to wait for a different table than to sit at the table next to the kitchen. Food was good as always."

  • "Started with the Antipasti Misto, which had a good selection of bruschetta, meats and other little bits. I had the Zuppa di Pesce, good, but the calamari was a bit tough, perhaps overcooked. My husband had the duck, which though meaty, didn't have much duck flavor, little too salty. The kids split the lasagna, which they enjoyed. Restaurant was busy, but we didn't feel neglected. Overall, a pleasant evening."

  • "Christmas Eve dinner for two. The place was packed with a line out the door. Service was friendly and attentive. Our meal and drinks were served timely. Food was decent but far from extraordinary. I'm pretty sure the mashed potatoes served with the Misto di Carne were from a box and each meat seemed to be prepared with the same spice blend. Ricotta stuffed Ravioli and fresh tomato sauce were also average. All in all, a pleasant evening but it'll be a while before I think about returning."

  • "We had 8pm reservations, showed up a few minutes early, was seated right at 8pm in a perfect booth for a party of 3. The server was EXCELLENT as was the food. This is a must repeat for me. It was a very special occasion as my guests were justed married an hour earlier. We could not have asked for more enjoyable night....and we brought our own wine too. Perfectomente!"

  • "It's hard to find authentic Italian food in SF...it always seems like the Americanized version of it. The bruchetta was delicious and almost a meal in and of itself; the risotto was cooked perfectly; the fish soup was delicious, and the pizza was spectacular. The only dish that didn't wow me was the stuffed peppers. I love this restaurant and luckily it's right in my neighborhood."

  • "Definitely a neighborhood gem. The food is consistently tasty and the service is friendly. I go here when I am craving a hearty Italian meal and they have never disappointed. The wine list also offers good choices on Italian wines and I always find something I haven't tried on the rotating menu of specials."
