  • "We had our rehearsal dinner at the private dinning rooms of Spiaggia, and it was great. So we went back for our 15th anniversary and it was a cold and formal dinner that was more than $500 for two of us. It was not impressive or enjoyable. Sorry we wasted the night there."

  • "Terrific food -- modern, imaginative, authentic. Sauces were perfect. Risotto with truffles divine. Quail a textured and tasty presentation. Wagyu beef tartare appetizer was encased in crust that led to amazing contrasts of flavor and texture. All in all, terrific food. Complemented by kind and gracious service-- our anniversary dinner was heralded by them with personalized menu, terrific table at windows, and complimentary dessert wine. This was a truly special dinner. We'll go again."

  • "I went to this restaurant for my birthday celebration with my friend, who had been there in the past. We had the five course dinner, which was very good in terms of preparation and taste. Portions were pretty small. Our waitress did not appear very interested in us, and only explained the menu after we asked her about it. After that, she was chatting with the other waiters and checked back in periodically only long enough for us to say that things were "fine." My friend had the wine pairing, and the pours were very small! Odd to have such poor service and small portions when dinner came out to $450 total. I was not thrilled by my experience. It was okay, but not worth repeating."

  • "Most expensive dinner we've had in recent times...... Limited menu, stuck with price-fix choices with $$+ supplements, our dinner for 2 with tip was just under $500, WITHOUT WINE just cocktails and while 2 of the 4 courses were memorable, the other 2 were just average. We were expecting 4 out of 4!!! Great view, great service, the only thing missing was the dinner choices and food. Save your $$."

  • "Upon visiting Spiaggia again we were even more impressed by the attention to detail, the superb cuisine and the outstanding all-Italian wine list.. The on-duty sommelier was VERY helpful in selecting superb wines and she absolutely did not direct me to the more expensive bottles but rather listened to what we might enjoy. Of course, none of it is cheap! We hear that Spiaggia will renovate their space in 2014 but I hope they don't overdo it--we love the unusual ambience and the view. Whatever they do, they can't change the fact that they are, without doubt, the best Italian restaurant in Chicago and maybe even the country!"

  • "To celebrate a very special evening I booked Spiaggia a month in advance. I asked for a very nice window overlooking Michigan Avenue. In stead we were give a side table, near the bar, with a direct view of an outside column. Ok, if the food was good I would over look the ambiance. Well, to my chagrin, the food was mediocre at best. My date had the pasta tasting menu - and I believe she found only 3 courses with pasta. I had the 4 course dinner - it was tasty but nothing special. The antelope was my entrée of choice and it was lacking in flavor and tenderness. Our wine was good but not worth $200.00. In short, Spiaggia needs to renew its commitment to fine dining and concentrate on what made it famous. It is living on its reputation."

  • "The food was delicious but my husband and I felt it was a little too expensive. Having to pay a supplemental charge to a price fix meal in order to get beef was the drawback to the menu. I'm honestly not interested in ordering antelope or quail when I am out for a special dinner. The food was very rich and could have been accompanied by more vegetables."

  • "We just dined at Spiaggia for our anniversary and it was spectacular! One of the two best meals I have ever eaten. The other one was Topolobampo by Rick Bayless. Chicago has a fabulous gourmet restaurant scene and Spiaggia tops the list. Service was excellent. The waiters knowledge and recommendations were spot on. We will be back!"

  • "Food was good and different, we don't eat venison or rabbit. Pasta was good. For the price I was somewhat underwhelmed. Wine was $150.00 per bottle, that is a very significant mark-up. There are many very nice restos in the Chicago area. Some of our orders were mixed up as to which person got what. I just think it is highly overpriced for most people for what you get. Would not go back!!!!! Our bill for 6 adults was well over $1,000.00 so think about it before booking. Since we were a party of six we had the four course menu with choices per person on each course."

  • "Elegant, memorable evening. We enjoy fine dining at least monthly, and do a number of business lunches for our jobs, and Spiaggia by far was one of our best dining experiences. Food was incredible, service was detailed, and the wine list was 47 pages long. Our server was extremely helpful in choosing from this novel of libations. Only flaw in the night was the server at times made us feel that were were not knowledgeable of fine dining and wine and was a little pretentious. Not sure if this was because we are in our late 20s/early 30s, but if we have the money to have a $600 dinner with drinks, we at least deserve some pampering to make us feel appreciated as a customer. Nonetheless, we will definitely be coming back to this restaurant."

  • "Big expectations, big bill, little plates, little service. Our waiter was aloof with an indifferent attitude. His single focus seemed to be up selling us to the more expensive menu items with truffles. Other servers were friendlier. Had to ask for bread three times yet restaurant was nearly empty. Cuisine was good but no where near the level one would expect from a restaurant with otherwise strong ratings from the food critics. When I called to make reservations I asked if I could order a la carte instead of the bundled 4 or 5 course menu and was told "certainly" but when I asked our waiter he said "no, not at Spiaggia" Really?? I won't be back."

  • "We were extremely disappointed in the service at the restaurant, it took about 10-15 minutes for the waitress to come back and ask us for our order after we sat down. Also, we did not order an expensive bottle of wine or the several hundred dollar pre-fixed menu and we noticed the waitress was very cold to us. While the food was good it was not great and the portion sizes were small. I would not recommend this restaurant at all."

  • "Took my wife for her birthday, which they did a very nice job of recognizing several times without going overboard. The service was outstanding, and the food was unique and very good. My wife is more of a foodie, so I was very pleased that she thoroughly enjoyed it. She selected the four course regular menu, and I selected the pasta tasting menu, which for me was not the best choice, although the wine/drink parings were nice. The dinner was nice and long. We thought they should lose the slate plates. In the tasting menu, I was served two cold dishes on slate plates. While they looked cool and kept the dish cold, using regular metal utensils on it was like nails on a chalkboard and took away from the taste experience."

  • "Spiaggia has a lovely atmosphere, and is good for a special occasion. The LEAST expensive menu is $115 per person without drinks and with none of the many "optionals." While our small, pasta dishes were truly excellent, and the main courses very good, but they were so small--the main courses--that none of us felt quite satisfied. Considering the bill was $660 plus tip for the three of us, including one bottle of decent wine, we expected to be satisfied. The desert options are merely acceptable, and the only chocolate options were cold. The flan desert was the size of a thimble."

  • "The food is still excellent, but the service was lacking. Their 30th year in business has clearly come with some slips in what had been one of their signature attributes, service. The champagne I pre-ordered didn't come until I reminded our waiter. When it did come it was not good and was the cheapest one after I indicated I'd like to spend about $100 on the selection. We refilled our own glasses from the ice bucket because the server was MIA for 30 minutes. I had to remind him which cheese was which and how to pronounce one of the choices when it came. All in all, it was a 3.5 hour dinner when it should have been much quicker and the birthday we celebrated was essentially ruined by the inattentive nature of the waiter."

  • "I have now eaten at 2 four star restaurants in my life, and this one was incredible. Being that I am a slightly picky eater, I assumed that there would be some things that I would try and not enjoy. Each dish out of our 5 courses was absolutely delicious. Portion size was perfect. Presentation was amazing. I tried lobster fois gras, as it came with my lobster claw and tail. I didn't enjoy it, but I'm just not a fan of lobster fois gras. It was still tasty, just not up my alley. When I am able to save up enough money on a year or two ;) I shall return."

  • "Food was really good and the place has an excellent wine list (although they did not have the Ripasso I was originally looking for). I thought the service was only so so. The original guy serving us needed a personality transplant but he was replaced by a lady with some character which aided the evening. We were spending close to 500 bucks here so I'd expect the service to be top notch and it wasn't (having a reserved personality in a top restaurant is fine but no personality at all is unacceptable in my opinion). The fact that it was a Monday night may not have helped the atmosphere as there were quite a few corporate dinners on the go.All in all a very decent meal and if you like your food you'll be happy you tried here."

When the second course did not arrive, although we did not remark on it, as an apology, the host presented us with an extra course of excellent truffled pasta and a complimentary glass of fabulous wine. Unfortunately, it made the second course, also pasta, seem bland by comparison. The rest of the meal was OK. We were seated across from the cheese cart which blocked the little view we had and did not smell nice."
