  • TERRIBLE service ruined it

The food was average to good, like it has been before. However, the service was terrible and that completely ruined what should have been a pleasant dinner with my daughters. At check in, the man at the door kept us waiting while he read something (seemed to be personal emails). Our waiter appeared in a rush to get us out the door - he actually removed my daughter's plate while she was still eating. He then disappeared for about 15 minutes and we had to ask someone to get him to bring us the dessert menus. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. I had read similar reviews and hoped they were exceptions; they appear not to be. Given the service we got, we would have done better at McDonalds - at 10% of the cost.

while the service by Everett was great I was so disappointed when I asked for a frozen strawberry daiquiri and was told they do not do blended drinks. Also, before we left for the restaurant we were looking at their website and decided I wanted to have their prime rib because on yelp everyone said it was the best...so I asked for prime rib medium rare and was told they do not have prime rib. When I mentioned we just saw it on their website..Everett apologized and said it should not have been on there. Otherwise, our ribeye was good and appreciated the complimentary champagne since my husband & I were celebrating our 40th anniversary there.

Spencer's is terrific for lunch, offering a good variety, attentive service and a really high standard of cooking. Many steak restaurants are also-rans with non- steak dishes, but Spencer's is excellent on all fronts- fish, bread, salads, everything. Great for a business meal, your clients will be pleased.

The host needs etiquette training. I was talking with him and a couple showed up and he proceeded to try to seat them before me and they were a walk in. I actually had a reservation. Service was a little slow. Food was pricey but was happy to see one prix fixe on the menu. The outside bar scene and hotel guests were distracting to us as we could see kids laying on couches and goofing around. Also was not pleased about having to pay for parking.

The food was exceptional as usual and the waiter was very good but it felt like he was in a hurry. Ticky tack but we weren't offered their bread (which is exceptional). Again share the blame but the waiter did not mention a salad course (wedge is amazing). So the steak 12oz. New York with bleu cheese and bacon was perfect! Would have been a better experience if we could have relaxed with a glass of wine, salad and bread, and then the main course. The restaurant was very busy so maybe more staff at the busy times?? Not recommending that people do not go here merely recommending maintaining some control over your dining experience so you can have a great time.

Steaks and sides are always good, although occasionally steaks are cooked substantially less than requested. I've ordered medium rare and had a blue steak delivered a couple times. Service is *always* slow, exceptionally slow. The waitstaff is nice enough, but the service quality doesn't match the food. Water glasses are left empty, plates are left empty on the table when the eating is clearly finished by all.

Something else is their de-constructed cobb salad. Called "Shaken, not Stirred," a very different take on your usual lunch salad. Their steaks are wonderful and usually cooked perfectly to order. Service can be a little slow, but attentive. I don't usually expect to find a very good restaurant in a hotel, but Spencers is special and often overlooked by San Jose diners. Plus they validate parking!

I recently dined at Spencer's since it was nearby work. In the past the steaks were properly cooked and the service was always on par. On this last visit, I was disappointed with both the quality of the steak and the wine service. Although I had ordered the bottle of wine after placing the order on the steak, my expectation was for the wine to arrive first to give it time to open up. The wine showed up after I was half way done with the steak. I requested my steak cooked medium rare, extra char on the outside. They completely forgot about the extra char request and the steak had little to no seasoning. I had to ask our server for some sea salt to improve the lack of flavor. For the price of these steaks with no sides, I expected much more.

We were seated at a nice table by the fireplace. Service was slow despite dining room not being too busy. Our sever rarely checked with us. Took almost thirty minutes for first course of salads to arrive. Salads were good. Steaks were great but one was under cooked and another arrived without the ordered sauce. The person was half way done by the time server checked back. Sides were a big disappointment. They were all lukewarm and without much flavor. The fries were dark brown and crispy. Don't know if it was bad night in kitchen or if inconsistency is the norm. Would likely return to give another chance.

Spencer's is a nice place to dine for a special night out or a business meeting unless you're used to spending $$$ on a dinner. It's a bit pricey with the sides needing to be ordered separately, but there's a special of 3 sides for $20. The ambience is very nice & the restaurant is designed so the noise level is pretty subdued. The service was excellent. The food was very good - I would have rated excellent except that I ordered a steak - "medium rare with more rare then medium" but when I cut into it, the steak was medium with no rare.

I enjoyed my meal, but Spencer's needs to work out something better with Double Tree. Valet parking was $20--an outrageous amount--and not all of it was validated by Spencer's. Self-park is anything but obvious, and I drove around 6 blocks looking for parking before finally caving in to the valets. I will not return as long as this policy is in effect--way too much on top of an already expensive dinner.

Spencer's is in the classy Doubletree hotel. It's a fine dining experience. Great steaks! The crab cakes were very good. The Ahi Tuna appetizer was excellent. But the beet salad wasn't great or I've had better. But the steaks were really delicious and perfectly prepared. I think they cook them at 1600 deg. F. So Ruth's does it at 1800, Fleming's 1700, and Spencer's 1600. They're all great steaks. You can't go wrong at Spencer's and if you need a place to sleep afterwards, you're already at the hotel.

I've been to this restaurant quite a few times, and usually found the food to be outstanding. Took business associates there and heard the steak was amongst the best they ever had. Will try once more but if this happens again it's off my list. Far too expensive to be less than a stellar experience. Appetizer: deep fried artichoke tasted wonderful if a little oily, sauce was uninteresting. Crab cakes tasted slightly off Main: Steak (NY Strip) was unusually tough, and sides boring. $15 for desert wine less exciting than I've paid <$7 a bottle. Service: over-attentive. We don't need to be asked every 2mins if everything is OK. At a restaurant in this class we can meet the server's eye when they are nearby.

My Sunday birthday dinner at Spencer's was perfect in every way: attentive knowledgeable staff; superbly prepared, tasty food; and a quiet refined atmosphere. I had the Forest Mushroom Risotto, a dish redolent with flavor, usually seen only at a large dinner house. The steak and lamb chop entrees were equally tasty and tender. When our family has a special occasion, and sometimes just want a nice dinner out, we choose Spencer's. Hands down.

We were disappointed in the service as it was almost non-existent, which was surprising as the restaurant was quiet for a Friday evening. I always kick myself for giving a server my order and then asking them not to fire the meal until we have had a chance to enjoy our cocktails and a bit of conversation. Our server assured us she would not fire the meal. 10 minutes later she walked by to fill water glasses and to let us know our meal would be "right out". I was shocked and reminded her of my request, she said she would take care of it. When the food did arrive it had obviously been under heat lamps and was cool and rubbery. I asked to speak to the manager who said they would work on improving training, she comped the salads.

My night out for dinner was very nice; the steaks were fantastic but quite frankly - the "witches convention" that apparently occurs around mid-February in the hotel each year, with a non-stop freak-show of Halloween-bedecked, obese people, spoiled the otherwise traditional "steakhouse ambiance". So I'll avoid Spencer's in the future at that time of year.

Made a reservation through OpenTable and arrived on time. We weren't seated for 25 minutes. No explanation or apology ... Just "we're really busy." Once seated, our waitress (an Asain woman) treated us like we were at a drive thru window at McDonalds....rude, matter of fact, and didn't explain the menu. We were informed they were out of bread. No apology or attempts to rectify. Our waitress bluntly said "we're out of bread." The food was sub-par and seemed more like a Vegas buffet steak than that which you would expect from an upscale steakhouse. The only time the waitress cracked a smile or even showed a hint of friendliness was when she brought the bill. It was over $150 (for 2 peopl. Without alcohol). Go to Morton's or Forbes Mill.
