  • "When you are going to have a $$$ meal you expect people to dress up a little. The hotel guests were very casually dressed. I will not be back for a special occasion because it is uncomfortable to be the only dressed-up couple in a casual family restaurant. For a family looking for great food and willing to pay $$$ this is a great option on a Saturday night."

My friend and I enjoyed a magnificent meal in an elegant dining room. We experienced two and one-half hours of unrushed, sheer, pleasure!!   • "I've been to this restaurant quite a few times, and usually found the food to be outstanding. Took business associates there and heard the steak was amongst the best they ever had. Will try once more but if this happens again it's off my list. Far too expensive to be less than a stellar experience. Appetizer: deep fried artichoke tasted wonderful if a little oily, sauce was uninteresting. Crab cakes tasted slightly off Main: Steak (NY Strip) was unusually tough, and sides boring. $15 for desert wine less exciting than I've paid <$7 a bottle. Service: over-attentive. We don't need to be asked every 2mins if everything is OK. At a restaurant in this class we can meet the server's eye when they are nearby."

  • "My Sunday birthday dinner at Spencer's was perfect in every way: attentive knowledgeable staff; superbly prepared, tasty food; and a quiet refined atmosphere. I had the Forest Mushroom Risotto, a dish redolent with flavor, usually seen only at a large dinner house. The steak and lamb chop entrees were equally tasty and tender. When our family has a special occasion, and sometimes just want a nice dinner out, we choose Spencer's. Hands down."

  • "Spencer's was a welcome dinner spot after a day of travel. Great food, service, ambience! Our table was near the beautiful fireplace which "set the tone" for our evening. The martini was perfect and our wine delicious. The food was excellent, albeit on the expensive side, but overall an excellent experience. We would definitely return!"

  • "We were disappointed in the service as it was almost non-existent, which was surprising as the restaurant was quiet for a Friday evening. I always kick myself for giving a server my order and then asking them not to fire the meal until we have had a chance to enjoy our cocktails and a bit of conversation. Our server assured us she would not fire the meal. 10 minutes later she walked by to fill water glasses and to let us know our meal would be "right out". I was shocked and reminded her of my request, she said she would take care of it. When the food did arrive it had obviously been under heat lamps and was cool and rubbery. I asked to speak to the manager who said they would work on improving training, she comped the salads."

  • "Don't go for a birthday if you want a little something special. Even though I mentioned that it was my husbands birthday dinner, that was not even acknowledged. I found myself waiting for fill ups on coffee and water. For the price I was expecting more. Go to Outback and save your money."

  • "We went here for our Valentine's dinner. I was not told there would be a set menu. Was surprised and disappointed. Although the food was very good...the service was slow and no one came to check on us thoughout the whole meal. We felt $15.50 for a small martini was outragious, and our bill with tip came to over $300. Although I did mention I would recommend this restaurant, I would with the warning that BIG BUCKS will be spent."

  • "My group splurged on dinner here for a daughter turning 15. The food was fantastic, even for the vegetarians. The service likewise was pleasant and attentive. For a fine dining experience it was an excellent value--I've been to places more expensive per person that we're not nearly as delicious, pleasant or fun. Highly recommend this for special events."

  • "My night out for dinner was very nice; the steaks were fantastic but quite frankly - the "witches convention" that apparently occurs around mid-February in the hotel each year, with a non-stop freak-show of Halloween-bedecked, obese people, spoiled the otherwise traditional "steakhouse ambiance". So I'll avoid Spencer's in the future at that time of year."

The menu was prix fixe but allowed flexibility. The only downfall to me was the inconsistency in serving sizes of the salads. The entrees were beautifully presented and prepared as ordered."

  • "I wrote a special request on Open Table when I made the reservation for VDay. When I arrived, two hostesses looked me in the eye and confirmed they saw my request and would relay it to the waiter. Low and behold, when the dessert plate comes out, my request was not fulfilled. Too bad, I thought folks were competent enough."

  • "We went here for Valentine's dinner. The service was slow but the person waiting on us was nice and cheerful. We ordered from the Prix-Fixe menu and out of the 4-course meal, 3 of them were really not good at all. The appetizer size was small but good. We had the mixed greens with a side of pork-belly which was dry as wood with absolutely no flavor. Next the steak arrived and while mine was too salty, my husband's steak was very fatty and not done properly. The only reason we didn't want to complain too much was because we wanted to have a relaxed date and the ambiance was nice. I wish something could have been done about the $250+ dinner, as I felt even the dessert missed the mark. I don't think I will recommend this place to anyone!"

  • "Made a reservation through OpenTable and arrived on time. We weren't seated for 25 minutes. No explanation or apology ... Just "we're really busy." Once seated, our waitress (an Asain woman) treated us like we were at a drive thru window at McDonalds....rude, matter of fact, and didn't explain the menu. We were informed they were out of bread. No apology or attempts to rectify. Our waitress bluntly said "we're out of bread." The food was sub-par and seemed more like a Vegas buffet steak than that which you would expect from an upscale steakhouse. The only time the waitress cracked a smile or even showed a hint of friendliness was when she brought the bill. It was over $150 (for 2 peopl. Without alcohol). Go to Morton's or Forbes Mill."

  • "This was only our second time at Spencer's. Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly, but somewhat inattentive. Since the restaurant is located in the hotel off of the lobby, the noise level can get high, which it was with a large conference kicking off. They should have had the front doors closed. It was a set menu. Most of the dishes were good, but I was very disappointed with the red velvet cake - it was dry and lacked flavor. It too quite a while for our waitress to return to our table so that we could order coffee with the dessert, so we just sat there for a while."

Seemed to lack a bit on the service staff, too many people showed up after us and they seemed a bit rushed, but the food was superb."

The oysters were NOT good, very fishing smelling and poor quality. I ordered the $65 porter house, it was cooked well, but was a poor quality. Drinks were nice and was the sides and desert. Overall we we very disappointed and sad that this resturant has gone down hill. MIke"

  • "Caveat:We dined here on New Year's Eve, so there was a prix-fixe menu. But, since this was our 30th Anniversary, we learned a long time ago to expect that, so we don't have any issues with the limited selection. However, it seems that Spencer's is trying to be in the same class as Morton's just by jacking up the prices. The next time we want a real high-quality steakhouse in San Jose, we'll not return to Spencer's. The service was an embarrassment. At $80 a plate, the waitress was serving our entrees within 5 minutes of the salads so that we were literally juggling plates and glasses to make room on the small table. The quality of the steaks was a step above Outback...nowhere near what you would expect to be served at a top-rated place."

  • "Christmas Eve, our second visit, overall good experience. The service is getting slower, had to get up and order a drink and get a knife for a member of our party. The truffle man n cheese remains our fav, the prix fixe menu was not. Normally, vegetables are table sharing size, not the case;that night; we now know to avoid evenings with prix fixe menu. Steaks perfectly cooked, food was excellent. Vegetarian guests were perfectly happy with other options."

  • "I've been to Spencer's before to celebrate my parents' 60th Anniversary and this time is was for my husband's birthday with 10 people. Our server although very nice did a very poor job of communication plus one of our family member's steak was still unsatisfactory after being sent back twice. For what I paid for the meals, I would have expected far better. I will not go back."

  • "Ideal location (in Doubletree) very close to San Jose Airport for a business lunch / dinner or just a special meal out. Usually fairly quiet ambiance, although the afternoon we visited, there was a large, rather vocal group behind drawn curtains near us, Nice ambiance, tablecloths, attentive staff, and good food, especially steaks, make this a place for that special meal, whether business or pleasure. Regular selection of prime cut steaks is ala carte with potato or vegetable sides at ~ $9 each. Be prepared for a leisurely meal."

  • "I have been to Spencer's other locations in Seattle and Spokane and have found them to be quite good; however the San Jose location really needs to improve their service. First and foremost we were there on a Monday night and that was a big mistake. We ordered drinks: 2 beers and 2 Negronis, which is not as common as a gin and tonic, but not that unheard in a bar, our waiter had to come back 2 times to make sure we wanted a Negroni and if we knew the recipe While the food was good, the service was quite bad. Our waiter was not good, he has difficulity taking drink orders, the sides were cold and they screwed up desserts. Look, this can be a good restaurant, but the wait and bar staff needs great improvement. DONT GO ON MONDAY"

  • "My husband and I came for our anniversary dinner. This new building is nice and has a good ambience, an extensive wine list and good service. But being a famous high end steakhouse, my expectation for the food is high. The wet aged rib eye was way too fatty, and the peppercorn steak was bland. Even with the top covered in peppercorns, there was no flavor. The best thing was the Oberon red wine blend that the somalier recommended. For the price, I'd rather go to Alexander's."

  • "I was expecting more. The food was good. I would have like to have been able to get a smaller rib eye steak, but they only had the 14 oz cut or the 22 oz bone in cut. I read the yelps and heard from others that Spencer's was thee place for steak. I have to disagree. I have had better food at Cattleman's! If you want good steak go to Ruth Chris. The loaded hash browns are amazing!"

  • "Excellent steaks at about $6-$8 less than Morton's but on a par with their quality. Like all steak houses, they serve a la carte, but the portions of vegetables they serve a la carte are huge. The dining room is broken into several different areas with a partition between which moderates the noise. The service is very professional, with several servers having been there for years. As to the location, it is offputting. Spencer's is located in the DoubleTree Hotel, but once inside you will see that they have spent money on furnishings which are the equal to the food and the prices. With a bottle of wine and two steak entrees, expect to pay $150.00, exclusive of tip."

  • "Hosted 7 people two nights ago and was pleasantly surprised that the food is getting better and better here. The apps were amazing and basically a meal in themselves. Quantity was huge and easy to share. Steaks were perfect and desserts the perfect finish. No reason to go any farther North. It was busy and the food a little slow but we will go again."

  • "Spencer's was a very warm, relaxing, comfortable environment for either personal or business purposes. The food was delicious, presented well and delivered in appropriate time-frames. In particular, the spinach salad I had was excellent. The crispy calamari my guest I had looked wonderful, was enjoed by him and was quite generous. The rack of lamb was also quite exquisite. The only critique would be that the service presence (waiter absence) in-between the end of entrees and dessert was too long. In any event, very much enjoyed and will go back."
