Diner Reviews
  • "The host needs etiquette training. I was talking with him and a couple showed up and he proceeded to try to seat them before me and they were a walk in. I actually had a reservation. Service was a little slow. Food was pricey but was happy to see one prix fixe on the menu. The outside bar scene and hotel guests were distracting to us as we could see kids laying on couches and goofing around. Also was not pleased about having to pay for parking."

  • "The food was exceptional as usual and the waiter was very good but it felt like he was in a hurry. Ticky tack but we weren't offered their bread (which is exceptional). Again share the blame but the waiter did not mention a salad course (wedge is amazing). So the steak 12oz. New York with bleu cheese and bacon was perfect! Would have been a better experience if we could have relaxed with a glass of wine, salad and bread, and then the main course. The restaurant was very busy so maybe more staff at the busy times?? Not recommending that people do not go here merely recommending maintaining some control over your dining experience so you can have a great time."

  • "I ordered the 24 oz. Porterhouse and it was delectable. It was paired with an amazing bottle of Twomey wine. This was my first experience at Spencer's and I would definitely dine here again."

  • "First time here the prime rib melt had no flavor. Besides that place is pretty good."

  • "Steaks and sides are always good, although occasionally steaks are cooked substantially less than requested. I've ordered medium rare and had a blue steak delivered a couple times. Service is *always* slow, exceptionally slow. The waitstaff is nice enough, but the service quality doesn't match the food. Water glasses are left empty, plates are left empty on the table when the eating is clearly finished by all."

  • "I eat here at least once every two weeks. I have a lot of business lunches here. The food is great, the ambiance is nice. I have a favorite waiter and I try to sit in his area if at all possible."

  • "I treated my Husband for Father's Day. The Bar area was crowded (all were having a good time) and the restaurant (for a Reservation for 6:15 PM) was not busy. Service: beverages: slow; salad course: delicious, fresh and timely ;Entre': reasonable time; after dinner service: poor."

  • "Something else is their de-constructed cobb salad. Called "Shaken, not Stirred," a very different take on your usual lunch salad. Their steaks are wonderful and usually cooked perfectly to order. Service can be a little slow, but attentive. I don't usually expect to find a very good restaurant in a hotel, but Spencers is special and often overlooked by San Jose diners. Plus they validate parking! "

  • "I recently dined at Spencer's since it was nearby work. In the past the steaks were properly cooked and the service was always on par. On this last visit, I was disappointed with both the quality of the steak and the wine service. Although I had ordered the bottle of wine after placing the order on the steak, my expectation was for the wine to arrive first to give it time to open up. The wine showed up after I was half way done with the steak. I requested my steak cooked medium rare, extra char on the outside. They completely forgot about the extra char request and the steak had little to no seasoning. I had to ask our server for some sea salt to improve the lack of flavor. For the price of these steaks with no sides, I expected much more. "

  • "We were seated at a nice table by the fireplace. Service was slow despite dining room not being too busy. Our sever rarely checked with us. Took almost thirty minutes for first course of salads to arrive. Salads were good. Steaks were great but one was under cooked and another arrived without the ordered sauce. The person was half way done by the time server checked back. Sides were a big disappointment. They were all lukewarm and without much flavor. The fries were dark brown and crispy. Don't know if it was bad night in kitchen or if inconsistency is the norm. Would likely return to give another chance."

  • "Spencer's is a nice place to dine for a special night out or a business meeting unless you're used to spending $$$ on a dinner. It's a bit pricey with the sides needing to be ordered separately, but there's a special of 3 sides for $20. The ambience is very nice & the restaurant is designed so the noise level is pretty subdued. The service was excellent. The food was very good - I would have rated excellent except that I ordered a steak - "medium rare with more rare then medium" but when I cut into it, the steak was medium with no rare. "

  • "Overall the food, service and ambience was great. We had a reservation and they immediately sat us at a great table. Upon arrival we were greeted and were given time to look through the beverage selection. The staff was very polite, friendly and attentive to us. Definitely will return. "

  • "One person: salad, steak, two drinks was $120 with tip, so while the steak was top notch and cooked to order, the prices are a bit above other similar top notch steak houses. Many business meetings in evidence, so probably a go to for deals and to be seen."

  • "I enjoyed my meal, but Spencer's needs to work out something better with Double Tree. Valet parking was $20--an outrageous amount--and not all of it was validated by Spencer's. Self-park is anything but obvious, and I drove around 6 blocks looking for parking before finally caving in to the valets. I will not return as long as this policy is in effect--way too much on top of an already expensive dinner."

  • "Spencer's is in the classy Doubletree hotel. It's a fine dining experience. Great steaks! The crab cakes were very good. The Ahi Tuna appetizer was excellent. But the beet salad wasn't great or I've had better. But the steaks were really delicious and perfectly prepared. I think they cook them at 1600 deg. F. So Ruth's does it at 1800, Fleming's 1700, and Spencer's 1600. They're all great steaks. You can't go wrong at Spencer's and if you need a place to sleep afterwards, you're already at the hotel."

  • "Great food, lovely place. Terrible waitress-Teresa P. Didnt know wines, brought salad after entree,(had two plates in front if me) didnt know desserts. Most likely filling in for someone given it was Easter. Will try again. "

  • "Kelvin, "5-star" server, chef, and other staff, made our birthday dinner evening extra special. Food, cocktails, and wine were all wonderful. My friend and I enjoyed a magnificent meal in an elegant dining room. We experienced two and one-half hours of unrushed, sheer, pleasure!! We look forward to returning to Spencer's for another extraordinary dining experience!!"

  • "When you are going to have a $$$ meal you expect people to dress up a little. The hotel guests were very casually dressed. I will not be back for a special occasion because it is uncomfortable to be the only dressed-up couple in a casual family restaurant. For a family looking for great food and willing to pay $$$ this is a great option on a Saturday night."

  • "I've been to this restaurant quite a few times, and usually found the food to be outstanding. Took business associates there and heard the steak was amongst the best they ever had. Will try once more but if this happens again it's off my list. Far too expensive to be less than a stellar experience. Appetizer: deep fried artichoke tasted wonderful if a little oily, sauce was uninteresting. Crab cakes tasted slightly off Main: Steak (NY Strip) was unusually tough, and sides boring. $15 for desert wine less exciting than I've paid <$7 a bottle. Service: over-attentive. We don't need to be asked every 2mins if everything is OK. At a restaurant in this class we can meet the server's eye when they are nearby."

  • "My Sunday birthday dinner at Spencer's was perfect in every way: attentive knowledgeable staff; superbly prepared, tasty food; and a quiet refined atmosphere. I had the Forest Mushroom Risotto, a dish redolent with flavor, usually seen only at a large dinner house. The steak and lamb chop entrees were equally tasty and tender. When our family has a special occasion, and sometimes just want a nice dinner out, we choose Spencer's. Hands down."

  • "Spencer's was a welcome dinner spot after a day of travel. Great food, service, ambience! Our table was near the beautiful fireplace which "set the tone" for our evening. The martini was perfect and our wine delicious. The food was excellent, albeit on the expensive side, but overall an excellent experience. We would definitely return!"

  • "We were disappointed in the service as it was almost non-existent, which was surprising as the restaurant was quiet for a Friday evening. I always kick myself for giving a server my order and then asking them not to fire the meal until we have had a chance to enjoy our cocktails and a bit of conversation. Our server assured us she would not fire the meal. 10 minutes later she walked by to fill water glasses and to let us know our meal would be "right out". I was shocked and reminded her of my request, she said she would take care of it. When the food did arrive it had obviously been under heat lamps and was cool and rubbery. I asked to speak to the manager who said they would work on improving training, she comped the salads."

  • "Don't go for a birthday if you want a little something special. Even though I mentioned that it was my husbands birthday dinner, that was not even acknowledged. I found myself waiting for fill ups on coffee and water. For the price I was expecting more. Go to Outback and save your money."

  • "My night out for dinner was very nice; the steaks were fantastic but quite frankly - the "witches convention" that apparently occurs around mid-February in the hotel each year, with a non-stop freak-show of Halloween-bedecked, obese people, spoiled the otherwise traditional "steakhouse ambiance". So I'll avoid Spencer's in the future at that time of year."

  • "My group splurged on dinner here for a daughter turning 15. The food was fantastic, even for the vegetarians. The service likewise was pleasant and attentive. For a fine dining experience it was an excellent value--I've been to places more expensive per person that we're not nearly as delicious, pleasant or fun. Highly recommend this for special events."

  • "Made a reservation through OpenTable and arrived on time. We weren't seated for 25 minutes. No explanation or apology ... Just "we're really busy." Once seated, our waitress (an Asain woman) treated us like we were at a drive thru window at McDonalds....rude, matter of fact, and didn't explain the menu. We were informed they were out of bread. No apology or attempts to rectify. Our waitress bluntly said "we're out of bread." The food was sub-par and seemed more like a Vegas buffet steak than that which you would expect from an upscale steakhouse. The only time the waitress cracked a smile or even showed a hint of friendliness was when she brought the bill. It was over $150 (for 2 peopl. Without alcohol). Go to Morton's or Forbes Mill."

  • "I wrote a special request on Open Table when I made the reservation for VDay. When I arrived, two hostesses looked me in the eye and confirmed they saw my request and would relay it to the waiter. Low and behold, when the dessert plate comes out, my request was not fulfilled. Too bad, I thought folks were competent enough."

  • "We went here for Valentine's dinner. The service was slow but the person waiting on us was nice and cheerful. We ordered from the Prix-Fixe menu and out of the 4-course meal, 3 of them were really not good at all. The appetizer size was small but good. We had the mixed greens with a side of pork-belly which was dry as wood with absolutely no flavor. Next the steak arrived and while mine was too salty, my husband's steak was very fatty and not done properly. The only reason we didn't want to complain too much was because we wanted to have a relaxed date and the ambiance was nice. I wish something could have been done about the $250+ dinner, as I felt even the dessert missed the mark. I don't think I will recommend this place to anyone!"

  • "We went here for our Valentine's dinner. I was not told there would be a set menu. Was surprised and disappointed. Although the food was very good...the service was slow and no one came to check on us thoughout the whole meal. We felt $15.50 for a small martini was outragious, and our bill with tip came to over $300. Although I did mention I would recommend this restaurant, I would with the warning that BIG BUCKS will be spent."

  • "Spencer's has been highly recommended and our Valentine's Day event with hubby was very special. The atmosphere of breaking up the room with drapery more intimate. The menu was prix fixe but allowed flexibility. The only downfall to me was the inconsistency in serving sizes of the salads. The entrees were beautifully presented and prepared as ordered."

  • "This was only our second time at Spencer's. Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly, but somewhat inattentive. Since the restaurant is located in the hotel off of the lobby, the noise level can get high, which it was with a large conference kicking off. They should have had the front doors closed. It was a set menu. Most of the dishes were good, but I was very disappointed with the red velvet cake - it was dry and lacked flavor. It too quite a while for our waitress to return to our table so that we could order coffee with the dessert, so we just sat there for a while."
