Spats should be acknowledged for having one of the more interesting and reasonably priced wine lists in the State College area. The markup is a little over 100% and many items were under 40, which is a decent value compared to other lists. Also in a positive light, the entree (salmon fillet with crabmeat) was presented as requested, though one could replicate the dish at home with moderate effort. The down sides of Spats were the mediocre service, the relatively crowded seating, and the generally high prices for entrees (30+) in a restaurant with an informal atmosphere. The problems could be solved by a redesign of the menu with a price point that fits Spats's casual atmosphere and the down home quality of authentic NOLA cuisine.

This is a downtown Sate College gem. The parking was convenient in a public garage just steps away. Spats paid - just ask. The restaurant has a warm ambiance, nicely decorated in a 20's theme. Our waitress was attentive and helpful with menu choices. The cajun / creole choices were excellent, shrimp and scallops not overcooked. The wine list is not large but is adequate. $110 for two with drinks and tip.

This was one of my favorite spots from when I was in college and I was so excited to be back after 16 years. The food did not disappoint and was as delicious as I remember it. Unfortunately, our server was terrible. She was clearly in a rush or just didn't care about a tip because she rushed us through ordering and then basically thrust our entree plates at us but without clearing the appetizers and we had to ask for silverware for every course. It may seem trivial but feeling rushed or not taken care of when you're out for a nice -and not inexpensive - meal, can really put a damper on the whole experience. Had I not been there before and thoroughly enjoyed it, I definitely wouldn't go back.

The food was awesome. Everything from the soup and chopped salad to the best chicken ever made our experience at Spats memorable. I would highly recommend the almond crusted chicken. Had a wonderful experience at Spats Speak Easy Cafe. The menu was fantastic with a lot of great cajun flavors and choices. We tried two tapas items ( Lamb Lollipop and the Voodoo Shrimp. Both were fantastic. For entrees we had the Jambalaya and the Crab Cakes - both were fantastic. We also tried the gumbo and veggie chili - again both were great. All in all it was a great time out , energetic atmosphere and very good service. Great place for " foodies " since the menu is full of interesting choices full of flavor and cajun spices. We will would highly recommend and will definitely go back the next time we are in State College !

NOLA right here in our little town! Our party of 4 had a terrific evening at Spats. It began with our server, Alex, along with the bartender, making the extra effort to deliver up espresso martinis, our favorite cocktail, but not a regular menu item. Wine service was good and we found a moderately priced wine that fit perfectly with our meal. Food was terrific: the crab cakes were outstanding -- lightly sautéd and sauced, not breaded and fried; the cajun-creole fish dishes were beautifully cooked, great looking, and tasty. Alex gently nudged us toward the dessert menu and with good reason. We loved the creme brûlée, bananas foster, and key lime tart. A very relaxed three hours well spent.

I've been to Spats on several occasions, and I have never been disappointed. Recently I invited business colleagues to dinner there, and everyone enjoyed the experience. While in town, we went to several other restaurants and wished we had returned to Spats instead. For tapas, I recommend the Cheese Board Sharing Plate, the Shrimp and Scallop Cake, and the Voodoo BBQ Shrimp. My colleagues enjoyed the duck. I loved the Bistro Beef Tender. I'll definitely return on my next visit to State College - Spats is in the Top Ten in State College for a reason!

I ordered a soup 2 tapas, told waiter to bring both tapas when the table received their entrees. The soup and one tapa came out as a starter. One guest ordered a demi sized entrée so when the main meal mine was larger than hers. Again was to be a tapas. What I ordered should have been around a total of $27.00 but my check was $47.56. I had been served a $30 entrée. I told the server, he was oops and offered a free dessert. I was too full to want it so turned it down. No adjustment to my bill. I had to find the manager and explain again what had happened she corrected the bill. Everyone at my table heard what I ordered but not the server. The food was wonderful but beware when Spats is packed that the waiter hears you!

Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. We had a reservation for lunch for 13 and ended up with 12 total. Everyone seemed very happy with the quality and taste of their food, of which there was a good varitey. Mine (seafood lunch special - shrimp, cheesy grits, collard greens) was delicious and all of the others looked great! Only one minor complaint is that it took a while for the food to be served. We were a large group, but there were very few other tables, so we expected it to be a little faster. Nonetheless, it was an overall GREAT dining experience.

2nd time coming here, food is very expensive but well worth it. Lots of great seafood options and very unique compared to other restaurants in State College. Duck breast with cornbread from the tapas menu is highly recommended, all the tapas dishes we had were great. The special was Mahi mahi and shrimp in white brie sauce with grits and asparagus which was phenomenal. Overall I would highly recommend it, great spot for a date and for foodies

An unassuming store front with fantastic selections of food. We were a party of 7 so ordered many tapas plates. One after the other were surprising and delicious. There was something for everyone. I had a frozen drink, which I finished, but didn't seen to have much alcoho in it. So robe else in my party had several mixed drinks that were great. Desserts were exceptional as well.

We have had daughters at Penn State over the last 8 years and this was a pleasant new discovery. We had a tough time deciding what to get as the menu had so many great options. We thoroughly enjoyed our "NOLA Experience" from Hurricane's before dinner right to the Banana's Foster Crepes for dessert. We will be coming back to check out some of the other great sounding options on the menu.

A group of us went for culinary week and ordered off the special menu for the week. The food tasted amazing, everyone loved their entrees, some people were not fond of the consistency of the chopped salad but I liked it. The service was very slow, we waited about 30 minutes for the salad/soup course, another 45 minutes from the time we finished that for the entree. From the time we ordered to the time our check arrived was over two hours. After the check did arrive one friend even joked that he could run to his car to grab something and the copy for him to sign would not be brought back yet, sure enough when he got back from his car the waitress didn't even run his credit card yet.

While there are many choices in State College most of them cater to students. Lots of burger/sandwich joints with a smattering of real restaurants. But even among the "real" restaurants, many have a rowdy bar scene for the 20-something set and serve mainly pub food. Not always what you're looking for. Spats is a great choice for grown ups looking for something that's a little bit more sophisticated though not expensive. The food is well worth the price and while the atmosphere is still pretty informal (this is a casual town after all) it is, well, adult. Though could admittedly use some sprucing up.
