Diner Reviews
  • "Poor service... Didn't seem to want my business. Many mistakes by the server but no concern with making it right. Food was OK but service was dreadful"

  • "This is my first time back to Spats in years, which is an old favorite. I liked the new menu and the food was very good. I will return the next time I'm in town!"

  • "Their GF menu has a lot of appetizers (unheard of for GF). Artichoke dip with veggies and rice crackers is my favorite. they have GF crab cakes and this is one of very few places we (who live near the bay) will eat crab. The cheese grits are amazing. Highly recommend."

  • "We ate at Spats Cafe last Saturday night. Our waitress was fabulous - knowledgeable and fun and helped make a special evening even more special. It was our second time at Spats' - and we can't wait to go back again! Many thanks."

  • "Set the bar high with the most delicious bread I have ever had in a restaurant and it was all uphill from there! Every course was more mindblowingly delicious than the last! Deep fried brie and mango chutney? Theres an app for that! I Highly reccommend Spats to anyone- for very reasonablly priced plates ($20-35) you will not find more delectable food!"

  • "Very unique and delicious food. Homemade desserts were also great"

  • "Enjoyed a great meal of creole specialties! Service was wonderful and you could imagine you were somewhere off Bourban Street. Reservations are a great idea - especially on the weekend. We had the jambalya, chopped salad and bourban pecan pie ala mode. If heading to Penn State and want to get out of the 'fray' without leaving College Avenue - come on in! The Hurricanes are a little sweeter than those in New Orleans, but worth it for a taste of Louisana."

  • "The gluten free menu at Spats offers a good selection of appetizers which is rare in my experience. The dinner options where also excellent and everyone in my party of 4 enjoyed their gluten free meals. The portions are on the smaller side, so make sure to order a appetizer if your hungry. The only 2 negatives for me where that they do not have a gluten free beer, and the prices. They offer hard cider which is too sweet for my taste. Dinner for 4 can easily run you $200.00 or more with the bar tab. Over all I was happy with my experience at Spats and I recommend it to anyone who can afford it."

  • "We try to get to Spat's a few times per year and we are never disappointed. The food is consistently good and the dishes are something that we can't get locally."

  • "Great food and service and always enjoyable....excellent food."

  • "I took my girlfriend there for Valentine's and we loved it. My family is from Louisiana so the food brought back fond memories. Our only problem was that our waittress seemed to not like the idea of two college students being there."

  • "It was our first Valentine's Day together as a couple and my date had never been to Spats. I was able to easily make reservations online, the restaurant had a cozy feel, the food and service was fantastic and the bill was very reasonable. We will definitely repeat this experience."

  • "Spats is one of our favorite restaurants in State College for special occasions. The food is excellent, the service has always been good, and the atmosphere is reasonable. It's not cheap, though. For a full dinner for two with a "cheap" bottle of wine you're looking at well over $100. Cut out the wine, appetizers, and dessert and you could bring that down quite a bit."

  • "Love this small & classy place. More than just a nice Cajun influenced menu. Excellent selections, great quality, well prepared. Quiet cozy atmosphere. Service was well paced and attentive. Great for couples and 4 to 5. A large group would not seem as comfortable. Gumbo as a starter is a must."

  • "Very hip place for lunch and dinner right on College Ave. great menu with lots of selections from New Orleans. Had the alligator which was really great. Tried the short ribs- perfect. My wife had the fish tacos and they were really good as well. Love the blues music in the background. Would definitely go back!"

  • "Never had a bad experience. My wife and I always go there for special occasions. Fantastic food. Great service. A step above all the other downtown restaurants... Two steps above The Deli"

  • "Went for the first time on my birthday for tapas and drinks. If seen a lot about the chef and his local food passion and Creativity. The food was great, lots of fun interesting combinations (fried oysters w berries and cheese, scallops w pineapple, and the charcuterie plate was very plentiful and a good deal!) the wine list was not overwhelming and the atmosphere was relaxed yet fun and festive for a freezing winter evening. I would go back again and again! One warning - they do not take American Express."

  • "This is our favorite State College restaurant- the menu has an interesting variety; we have always enjoyed our menu choices; the servers are professional and do a great job with timing, questions, and requests; the ambiance is attractive and quiet enough to hear your table's conversation. It's a little pricey, but worth it for a fine dining experience. The chopped salad is really nice with any entrees. Monday night you can BYOB."

  • "Things were mostly good, but not exceptional. The portions are average to large. I asked them to hold the onions on my sandwich, but they didn't, so I had to pick them off myself. It was a little messy - as everyone in the group watched. Another party member only had part of the order delivered. They produced the missing part quickly, but still... The restaurant was very empty, so the kitchen cannot use being busy as an excuse. We've eaten here several times before with better results. We will go back, but probably not too soon."

  • "The menu selection is amazing for cajun food. The owner even came out to our table to answer quetions!"

  • "This is one of my favorite lunch spots for authentic Louisiana cajun food. The jambalaya was excellent and comes in a smaller lunch portion. The cornbread is warm and flavorful with good sized portions. The wait staff are very attentive to refilling glasses without having to ask. A great place to meet friends for a casual lunch experience!"

  • "Service was poor. We waited for about 45 minutes for our entrees. Very loud atmosphere. Appetizers were very good but entrees were not and were overpriced. Will not be going back anytime soon."

  • "I had a WONDERFUL dinner and it was a great way to end and start the New Year. The food was outstanding and the wait service was good. They were very very busy. I will be back."

  • "Our favorite restaurant when we visit State College. It is usually noisy, but that is part of the experience. Try the Sangria and the nut crusted amaretto chicken."

  • "We have been to Spats on 3 separate occasions. The first two times were very good all around. But on this most recent visit, the service was extremely slow. 10 minutes to get drinks, an hour + wait for appetizers, and dinner finally arrived 40 minutes later. The food was tasty but the duck portions were disappointingly small. The thing is, the restaurant was not even 3/4 full. Disappointing to say the least."

  • "My family and I had a lovely dining experience here. Outstanding service. A number of excellent dishes, though the "Gator Bites" appetizer were on the limp and soggy side."

  • "Good Creole style food, excellent service, great atmosphere."

  • "Great food with unique flavor pairings. Smaller plate offerings for their entrees. The artichoke dip is the best we have ever had. We will go back any time we are in State College."

  • "Spats is a wonderful place, with a delicious, unique menu and perfect location. We enjoy the quiet environment where we can easily carry on a conversation. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. We look forward to the next trek to State College and Spats for dinner!"

  • "Pretty good cajun food. grits and collards were very good. I had bar bq shrimp with it and all was good. Nice change if you are at State College for the weekend."

  • "We had a wonderful meal here. The blackened catfish was perfect. So was our chopped salads and appetizers. The server was friendly, had good suggestions and perfect timing. And of course the atmosphere at Spats was warm and cozy. We'll definitely go there again."

  • "We have been to Spats numerous times, and have never left disappointed. While the menu leans toward Cajun, there is a variety of foods for everyone's taste. We love the Cajun flare though, it is like having a piece of New Orleans in State College. Don't miss it."
    Dined on 11/6/2013
  • "Excellent food. Lots of great Cajun options. Waitress seemed out of sync at the beginning but recovered some as the meal went on. Maybe it was just an off night. Would definitely go back. One comment is that it seemed smoky inside although no one was smoking. Maybe the kitchen ventilation wasn't working well. All in all it was an excellent meal."
    Dined on 11/1/2013
  • "Let me preface this by saying that I really like Spat's, but it's not necessarily because of the food. I enjoy the ambience and the great service. Good wine, too. Some of the dishes are very tasty. I loved the duck spring rolls and the spareribs that are not on the menu now. I once had a beautifully done piece of halibut in a lemon wine reduction sauce. Excellent! But, I can't count on consistently delicious meals there. Generally, the food is just too heavy with cream and spices. The blackened entrees are almost inedible. The other night I encouraged everyone to have a spinach salad, but it wasn't as I remembered and I couldn't even get through half of mine. A lighter touch would help the cuisine. Bring in Gordon Ramsay for a makeover."

  • "Went to Spats to celebrate our anniversary. It was quiet and a pretty atmosphere. The food from appetizer, entree, and dessert were all delicious. Would definitely recommend it!"

  • "We were in town for a conference and a friend recommended Spats. New Orleans cajun style food at its best. Service was friendly, I highly recommend the Sangria! Large tapas menu -- would recommend the Voodoo BBQ Shrimp. Hubby ordered Jambalaya extra spicy because he loves his food hot -- this did not disappoint -- he was sweating by the end of the meal. I had the lump crab cakes which were good but I would've preferred a little less breading. Too stuffed to try dessert but when we come back to State College again, Spats will be on our dining out list for sure!"
