NOLA right here in our little town! Our party of 4 had a terrific evening at Spats. It began with our server, Alex, along with the bartender, making the extra effort to deliver up espresso martinis, our favorite cocktail, but not a regular menu item. Wine service was good and we found a moderately priced wine that fit perfectly with our meal. Food was terrific: the crab cakes were outstanding -- lightly sautéd and sauced, not breaded and fried; the cajun-creole fish dishes were beautifully cooked, great looking, and tasty. Alex gently nudged us toward the dessert menu and with good reason. We loved the creme brûlée, bananas foster, and key lime tart. A very relaxed three hours well spent.

My wife and I tried this place for the first time and we both enjoyed it. We thought the shrimp and scallops with creamy grits was excellent. There is a modest wine list at reasonable prices. A funky ambiance with a mature crowd.

I've been to Spats on several occasions, and I have never been disappointed. Recently I invited business colleagues to dinner there, and everyone enjoyed the experience. While in town, we went to several other restaurants and wished we had returned to Spats instead. For tapas, I recommend the Cheese Board Sharing Plate, the Shrimp and Scallop Cake, and the Voodoo BBQ Shrimp. My colleagues enjoyed the duck. I loved the Bistro Beef Tender. I'll definitely return on my next visit to State College - Spats is in the Top Ten in State College for a reason!

I ordered a soup 2 tapas, told waiter to bring both tapas when the table received their entrees. The soup and one tapa came out as a starter. One guest ordered a demi sized entrée so when the main meal mine was larger than hers. Again was to be a tapas. What I ordered should have been around a total of $27.00 but my check was $47.56. I had been served a $30 entrée. I told the server, he was oops and offered a free dessert. I was too full to want it so turned it down. No adjustment to my bill. I had to find the manager and explain again what had happened she corrected the bill. Everyone at my table heard what I ordered but not the server. The food was wonderful but beware when Spats is packed that the waiter hears you!

Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. We had a reservation for lunch for 13 and ended up with 12 total. Everyone seemed very happy with the quality and taste of their food, of which there was a good varitey. Mine (seafood lunch special - shrimp, cheesy grits, collard greens) was delicious and all of the others looked great! Only one minor complaint is that it took a while for the food to be served. We were a large group, but there were very few other tables, so we expected it to be a little faster. Nonetheless, it was an overall GREAT dining experience.

2nd time coming here, food is very expensive but well worth it. Lots of great seafood options and very unique compared to other restaurants in State College. Duck breast with cornbread from the tapas menu is highly recommended, all the tapas dishes we had were great. The special was Mahi mahi and shrimp in white brie sauce with grits and asparagus which was phenomenal. Overall I would highly recommend it, great spot for a date and for foodies

Had an outstanding meal during recent trip to State College. Tried appetizers of fried oysters, voodoo shrimp, short rib eggrolls and three dips. Small plates were all great and offer you the opportunity to enjoy a variety of plates. Lambchops with balsamic glaze were amazing. Will definitely return on next trip. Waitress gave us great service and was a lot of fun.

An unassuming store front with fantastic selections of food. We were a party of 7 so ordered many tapas plates. One after the other were surprising and delicious. There was something for everyone. I had a frozen drink, which I finished, but didn't seen to have much alcoho in it. So robe else in my party had several mixed drinks that were great. Desserts were exceptional as well.

We have had daughters at Penn State over the last 8 years and this was a pleasant new discovery. We had a tough time deciding what to get as the menu had so many great options. We thoroughly enjoyed our "NOLA Experience" from Hurricane's before dinner right to the Banana's Foster Crepes for dessert. We will be coming back to check out some of the other great sounding options on the menu.

A group of us went for culinary week and ordered off the special menu for the week. The food tasted amazing, everyone loved their entrees, some people were not fond of the consistency of the chopped salad but I liked it. The service was very slow, we waited about 30 minutes for the salad/soup course, another 45 minutes from the time we finished that for the entree. From the time we ordered to the time our check arrived was over two hours. After the check did arrive one friend even joked that he could run to his car to grab something and the copy for him to sign would not be brought back yet, sure enough when he got back from his car the waitress didn't even run his credit card yet.

While there are many choices in State College most of them cater to students. Lots of burger/sandwich joints with a smattering of real restaurants. But even among the "real" restaurants, many have a rowdy bar scene for the 20-something set and serve mainly pub food. Not always what you're looking for. Spats is a great choice for grown ups looking for something that's a little bit more sophisticated though not expensive. The food is well worth the price and while the atmosphere is still pretty informal (this is a casual town after all) it is, well, adult. Though could admittedly use some sprucing up.

My hasband and I made a reservation for dinner at Spats for our 1 year anniversary. This was the place we had gone to on our first date and I remember it being a very quiet and classy restaurant. When we got to the restaurant I was let down at the quality of the table that we were seated at. I understand that it was a busy night but the customers that call ahead and make a reservation should, I believe, get better seating than those that do not make a reservation. I was also extremely disappointed with the quality of the gin and tonic that I ordered. It was 2% gin and 98% tonic water. I sent it back saying that it was not worth drinking. On a bright note, the food was INCREDIBLE and our waitress was very accomodating. Overall great.

Dinner at Spats never disappoints! The food was wonderful (I had the crabcakes, which are especially delicious with the cajun remolade), and everyone at my table was very happy with their dinner. The appetizer, or tapas, menu is innovative (we had the brie in pastry, the steamed mussels and the gator bites on cornbread), and all of our choices were great. Service is friendly, prompt and non-intrusive. I would recommend dining at Spats. Make reservations - they are justifiably often quite busy!

Really enjoyed the service and ambience. The service was impeccable. The food was good but not great. Two southern boys may have had too high an expectation; if the proprietors want to really spice up the Cajun food menu I'd suggest a weekend trip to New Orleans (or any cities along the Gulf coast) for the chef. The effort would be well served (pun intended). That said - I'd still go back and try out some other menu items!

Very good food and exactly type of place I now frequent on my business trips. Spats is place for special occasions as a student, but as alumni, I would frequent more often given the chance. We had the gumbo, chicken firesticks, alligator bites, pasta, and cajun dirty jambalaya. The bad, the pasta was not cooked very well; very mushy and over done, we actually returned the plate, not charged by the restaurant. But everything else was very good. The gumbo was hearty and flavorful, like the ones I get down in New Orleans. Gator was tender and the rue sauce was very good. The cajun jambalaya with a bit of the Spats hot sauce, excellent! The firesticks was not on the menu but they made it for us, and just as how my wife loved it.
