  • "FOOD - great. SERVICE - great. AMBIENCE - great. A definite "Must Experience" while in State College."

  • "Dinner at Spats never disappoints! The food was wonderful (I had the crabcakes, which are especially delicious with the cajun remolade), and everyone at my table was very happy with their dinner. The appetizer, or tapas, menu is innovative (we had the brie in pastry, the steamed mussels and the gator bites on cornbread), and all of our choices were great. Service is friendly, prompt and non-intrusive. I would recommend dining at Spats. Make reservations - they are justifiably often quite busy!"

  • "I am never disappointed with Spats. They have a great variety of menu items to choose from and the service is always friendly and knowledgeable. I can't come to State College without stopping here!"

  • "The food is gourmet, made to order, and wonderful. We ate here two nights in a row. The best part was, they have a wonderful gluten free menu and are willing to modify dishes however you need. We took our kids and they were very kid friendly. We will go here again when we come to Penn State."

  • "Visited this restaurant while taking our daughter to Penn State New Student Orientation. We all were very happy with the atmosphere, food and service. The atmosphere is cozy and good for all generations. "

  • "I have been going to Spat's ever since I went to main campus back in 1994. It is by far my favorite restaurant. I come back every year to visit Penn State and always eat at Spat's during my stay! The jambalaya is my absolute favorite!"

  • "NYC food snob in for the Happy Volley tournament. I was surprised to find such a good Cajun food in of all places State College PA. Highly recommended. "

  • "really good cajun food. unbelievable for state college."

  • "Been going there for years and they never disappoint. We lucked out the other night and got a 4 top by the windows. Warm evenings in a college town. Girls outside were hotter than the crab and crawfish hot pepper pasta. My favorite meal and my favorite restaurant and that's saying something."

  • "Went here with my wife for our wedding anniversary. Food was great! Loved the crab and crawfish spicy creamy pasta. Phenomenal!"
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "Their pasta special is something for one to order if you like way over cooked pasta and so much cheese that you cannot taste crab nor the crawfish. Were they even on the plate? No idea."

  • "Really enjoyed the service and ambience. The service was impeccable. The food was good but not great. Two southern boys may have had too high an expectation; if the proprietors want to really spice up the Cajun food menu I'd suggest a weekend trip to New Orleans (or any cities along the Gulf coast) for the chef. The effort would be well served (pun intended). That said - I'd still go back and try out some other menu items!"

  • "Very good food and exactly type of place I now frequent on my business trips. Spats is place for special occasions as a student, but as alumni, I would frequent more often given the chance. We had the gumbo, chicken firesticks, alligator bites, pasta, and cajun dirty jambalaya. The bad, the pasta was not cooked very well; very mushy and over done, we actually returned the plate, not charged by the restaurant. But everything else was very good. The gumbo was hearty and flavorful, like the ones I get down in New Orleans. Gator was tender and the rue sauce was very good. The cajun jambalaya with a bit of the Spats hot sauce, excellent! The firesticks was not on the menu but they made it for us, and just as how my wife loved it."

  • "Our party of six arrived at eight o'clock. We had to move our dinner reservations back as we were driving from Williamsburg Va. and got into a lot of traffic,We were accommodated with no problem. Our server was very helpful when we ordered as to portion sizes for some that were ordering the smaller dishes. The food was outstanding as we had experienced on a prior visit. We look forward to returning soon."

  • "This is my first time back to Spats in years, which is an old favorite. I liked the new menu and the food was very good. I will return the next time I'm in town!"

  • "Their GF menu has a lot of appetizers (unheard of for GF). Artichoke dip with veggies and rice crackers is my favorite. they have GF crab cakes and this is one of very few places we (who live near the bay) will eat crab. The cheese grits are amazing. Highly recommend."

  • "We ate at Spats Cafe last Saturday night. Our waitress was fabulous - knowledgeable and fun and helped make a special evening even more special. It was our second time at Spats' - and we can't wait to go back again! Many thanks."

  • "Set the bar high with the most delicious bread I have ever had in a restaurant and it was all uphill from there! Every course was more mindblowingly delicious than the last! Deep fried brie and mango chutney? Theres an app for that! I Highly reccommend Spats to anyone- for very reasonablly priced plates ($20-35) you will not find more delectable food!"

  • "Very unique and delicious food. Homemade desserts were also great"

  • "Enjoyed a great meal of creole specialties! Service was wonderful and you could imagine you were somewhere off Bourban Street. Reservations are a great idea - especially on the weekend. We had the jambalya, chopped salad and bourban pecan pie ala mode. If heading to Penn State and want to get out of the 'fray' without leaving College Avenue - come on in! The Hurricanes are a little sweeter than those in New Orleans, but worth it for a taste of Louisana."

  • "The gluten free menu at Spats offers a good selection of appetizers which is rare in my experience. The dinner options where also excellent and everyone in my party of 4 enjoyed their gluten free meals. The portions are on the smaller side, so make sure to order a appetizer if your hungry. The only 2 negatives for me where that they do not have a gluten free beer, and the prices. They offer hard cider which is too sweet for my taste. Dinner for 4 can easily run you $200.00 or more with the bar tab. Over all I was happy with my experience at Spats and I recommend it to anyone who can afford it."

  • "I took my girlfriend there for Valentine's and we loved it. My family is from Louisiana so the food brought back fond memories. Our only problem was that our waittress seemed to not like the idea of two college students being there."

  • "It was our first Valentine's Day together as a couple and my date had never been to Spats. I was able to easily make reservations online, the restaurant had a cozy feel, the food and service was fantastic and the bill was very reasonable. We will definitely repeat this experience."

  • "Spats is one of our favorite restaurants in State College for special occasions. The food is excellent, the service has always been good, and the atmosphere is reasonable. It's not cheap, though. For a full dinner for two with a "cheap" bottle of wine you're looking at well over $100. Cut out the wine, appetizers, and dessert and you could bring that down quite a bit."

  • "Love this small & classy place. More than just a nice Cajun influenced menu. Excellent selections, great quality, well prepared. Quiet cozy atmosphere. Service was well paced and attentive. Great for couples and 4 to 5. A large group would not seem as comfortable. Gumbo as a starter is a must."

  • "Very hip place for lunch and dinner right on College Ave. great menu with lots of selections from New Orleans. Had the alligator which was really great. Tried the short ribs- perfect. My wife had the fish tacos and they were really good as well. Love the blues music in the background. Would definitely go back!"

  • "Never had a bad experience. My wife and I always go there for special occasions. Fantastic food. Great service. A step above all the other downtown restaurants... Two steps above The Deli"

  • "Went for the first time on my birthday for tapas and drinks. If seen a lot about the chef and his local food passion and Creativity. The food was great, lots of fun interesting combinations (fried oysters w berries and cheese, scallops w pineapple, and the charcuterie plate was very plentiful and a good deal!) the wine list was not overwhelming and the atmosphere was relaxed yet fun and festive for a freezing winter evening. I would go back again and again! One warning - they do not take American Express."

  • "This is our favorite State College restaurant- the menu has an interesting variety; we have always enjoyed our menu choices; the servers are professional and do a great job with timing, questions, and requests; the ambiance is attractive and quiet enough to hear your table's conversation. It's a little pricey, but worth it for a fine dining experience. The chopped salad is really nice with any entrees. Monday night you can BYOB."

  • "Things were mostly good, but not exceptional. The portions are average to large. I asked them to hold the onions on my sandwich, but they didn't, so I had to pick them off myself. It was a little messy - as everyone in the group watched. Another party member only had part of the order delivered. They produced the missing part quickly, but still... The restaurant was very empty, so the kitchen cannot use being busy as an excuse. We've eaten here several times before with better results. We will go back, but probably not too soon."

    Dined on 12/28/2013
  • "This is one of my favorite lunch spots for authentic Louisiana cajun food. The jambalaya was excellent and comes in a smaller lunch portion. The cornbread is warm and flavorful with good sized portions. The wait staff are very attentive to refilling glasses without having to ask. A great place to meet friends for a casual lunch experience!"

  • "Service was poor. We waited for about 45 minutes for our entrees. Very loud atmosphere. Appetizers were very good but entrees were not and were overpriced. Will not be going back anytime soon."
