The food was wonderful (I had the crabcakes, which are especially delicious with the cajun remolade), and everyone at my table was very happy with their dinner. The appetizer, or tapas, menu is innovative (we had the brie in pastry, the steamed mussels and the gator bites on cornbread), and all of our choices were great. Service is friendly, prompt and non-intrusive. I would recommend dining at Spats. Make reservations - they are justifiably often quite busy!"

Two southern boys may have had too high an expectation; if the proprietors want to really spice up the Cajun food menu I'd suggest a weekend trip to New Orleans (or any cities along the Gulf coast) for the chef. The effort would be well served (pun intended). That said - I'd still go back and try out some other menu items!"

  • "Very good food and exactly type of place I now frequent on my business trips. Spats is place for special occasions as a student, but as alumni, I would frequent more often given the chance. We had the gumbo, chicken firesticks, alligator bites, pasta, and cajun dirty jambalaya. The bad, the pasta was not cooked very well; very mushy and over done, we actually returned the plate, not charged by the restaurant. But everything else was very good. The gumbo was hearty and flavorful, like the ones I get down in New Orleans. Gator was tender and the rue sauce was very good. The cajun jambalaya with a bit of the Spats hot sauce, excellent! The firesticks was not on the menu but they made it for us, and just as how my wife loved it."

We had to move our dinner reservations back as we were driving from Williamsburg Va. and got into a lot of traffic,We were accommodated with no problem. Our server was very helpful when we ordered as to portion sizes for some that were ordering the smaller dishes. The food was outstanding as we had experienced on a prior visit. We look forward to returning soon."

  • "Enjoyed a great meal of creole specialties! Service was wonderful and you could imagine you were somewhere off Bourban Street. Reservations are a great idea - especially on the weekend. We had the jambalya, chopped salad and bourban pecan pie ala mode. If heading to Penn State and want to get out of the 'fray' without leaving College Avenue - come on in! The Hurricanes are a little sweeter than those in New Orleans, but worth it for a taste of Louisana."

  • "The gluten free menu at Spats offers a good selection of appetizers which is rare in my experience. The dinner options where also excellent and everyone in my party of 4 enjoyed their gluten free meals. The portions are on the smaller side, so make sure to order a appetizer if your hungry. The only 2 negatives for me where that they do not have a gluten free beer, and the prices. They offer hard cider which is too sweet for my taste. Dinner for 4 can easily run you $200.00 or more with the bar tab. Over all I was happy with my experience at Spats and I recommend it to anyone who can afford it."

It's not cheap, though. For a full dinner for two with a "cheap" bottle of wine you're looking at well over $100. Cut out the wine, appetizers, and dessert and you could bring that down quite a bit."

  • "Went for the first time on my birthday for tapas and drinks. If seen a lot about the chef and his local food passion and Creativity. The food was great, lots of fun interesting combinations (fried oysters w berries and cheese, scallops w pineapple, and the charcuterie plate was very plentiful and a good deal!) the wine list was not overwhelming and the atmosphere was relaxed yet fun and festive for a freezing winter evening. I would go back again and again! One warning - they do not take American Express."

  • "Things were mostly good, but not exceptional. The portions are average to large. I asked them to hold the onions on my sandwich, but they didn't, so I had to pick them off myself. It was a little messy - as everyone in the group watched. Another party member only had part of the order delivered. They produced the missing part quickly, but still... The restaurant was very empty, so the kitchen cannot use being busy as an excuse. We've eaten here several times before with better results. We will go back, but probably not too soon."

  • "This is one of my favorite lunch spots for authentic Louisiana cajun food. The jambalaya was excellent and comes in a smaller lunch portion. The cornbread is warm and flavorful with good sized portions. The wait staff are very attentive to refilling glasses without having to ask. A great place to meet friends for a casual lunch experience!"
