A word from Sparrow Bar + Cookshop
Celebrated Houston chef and restaurateur Monica Pope left behind the landmark local eatery t'afia in its prime to chart a new culinary adventure – a fresh start that is a result of Pope's continually evolving dialog with food, family and community.

Sparrow Bar & Cookshop is a back-to-basics concept that finds its story in the intimate, 1940s-era warehouse building at 3701 Travis Street, where t'afia was born and helped to re-gentrify a now bustling neighborhood. Sparrow represents a new freedom, a more free-flowing and easily sharable menu that often activates guest interaction in the final composition of dishes.

"At Sparrow, I am going to be cooking the things I would make at home for my family and friends – fresh, unpretentious and full of flavor," says Pope. "I want people to stop by without a reason or reservation, but we'll certainly accommodate that, too."

  • "We have been to Sparrow Bar + Cookshop twice now. The food was delicious both times. The warm, hearty bread and soft herb butter served initially is wonderful. I had the kale salad with homemade green goddess dressing. I am now a kale lover for sure! We tried the scallops this past time and they were complex in flavor and cooked perfectly. The crispy brussel sprouts aren't to be missed. We also had their vegetable root au gratin and you wouldn't know you weren't eating lovely potatoes. We will definitely return!"

  • "Nice spot, great food although not cheap. Your dinner will have no sides, something you would expect a great Houston chef to have prearranged for you. I was able to get over those facts yet the service was bad. Food took forever to arrive and the place half-empty. When the main dish was served the sides were not in for another 15 minutes. The minute your last bite is in your mouth your plate will be cleaned away and your waiter will show immediately to push dessert while he was nowhere to be found before. Not a great dinning experience. Unfortunately I will not dine there again."

  • "One of my favorite places. Inventive food, intimate atmosphere, great service. In a food city with lots of outstanding restaurants, Sparrow is one of the best."

  • "Our experience was nice overall but wouldn't return. our server was energetic (maybe a lil too overly enthusiastic), tables and overall decor were cozy. cocktails were innovative, lots of creativity with ingredients though sometimes i think simplicity is better. the food is alright, nothing i would run home to tell people about. scallops were over seasoned/salty and 2 of the 4 were overcooked to rubbery texture-unedible. ratio of protein/food to price is in no way equivalent. recommend beets, brussel sprouts, sweetbreads and affogato. i'm glad we came to the restaurant after hearing much about it and monica pope. good for a one-time experience on a special occasion or maybe to hang out at the bar."

  • "We headed in town to celebrate my wife's birthday and tried the Sparrow for the first time. He hit the jackpot with our waiter Jess (frenchie) as he was very entertaining the enitre night. Now to the food. We endulged in a number of appetizers- chick peas, sashimi, dumplings. I could have eating 2 orders of the sashimi and dumplings myself. All the sauces were wonderful. We also had the halibut as our entree. It was good but the appetizers stole the show. Dessert was also delicious. We split the Affogo (sp) had carmel popcorn, ice cream, toffee.....awesome.We had a great time and will be back."

  • "Four of us had dinner here and all of us enjoyed our meal. We had lots of vegetables because of their variety and they all were tasty especially the brussel sprouts, who would have thought! Also the mushroom dumplings with a sauce made of blue cheese were wonderful even to 2 people who don't like blue cheese."

  • "We were excited to go to a Monica Pope restaurant. I've been a fan for years! The food was good, but didn't knock our socks off. One of our starters was barely warm, and my husband had to send his chicken dish back because it was cold. The good news is they took care of that right away. Good drinks, nice starters and scallops, but there are so many great places in Houston, we won't make Sparrow a priority."

  • "Our server seemed to be bothered with the fact that waiting on us was his job. When he did pay us any attention our questions were "answered" in one or two words while walking away from us. He did seem to find ample time to hang put and talk to the bartender and hostess. We waited forever for him to walk by so we could ask for the check, which he dropped on the table in passing. Of course he didn't return in any sort of timely manner to pick it up. Fortunately a different waiter noticed us visibly aging while we waited and came and took care of the bill. The food was alright, and truthfully the service was so horrible that it made it hard to enjoy the food."

  • "One more great meal at Monica Pope's Sparrow Bar + Cookshop. The menu is creative and the service friendly and knowledgeable. The environment is relaxed but fun. Eating here is always an adventure, as the menu changes frequently. Looking forward to our next visit!"

  • "We are never disappointed at Sparrow and always go home happy - it was a great way to spend our New Years Eve! The special menu was perfect but for the first time we branched out and tried a different dessert - while it was good, it wasn't bread pudding and we should not stray from perfection! If the bread pudding is available - get it - it is worth saving room and its plenty to share!"

  • "Have been to this reincarnation of Monica Pope's place on numerous occasions. And have never been disappointed in the food, service, wine list or, atmosphere. We are frequent fans of the tasting menus (with wine parings) as they feature the best dishes with exceptional (local or global) wines. The server staff is very knowledgable about the dishes and recommend using them to help select your dinner. This is also one restaurant that will not rush out the dinners, or service, to flip a table. The waiters are excellent at working within your dining pace. Highly recommended for the food, service and wine."

  • "I was traveling on business and made Sparrow/ Chef Monica Pope's restaurants the #1 destination to go to. I went to Sparrow as well as Beaver's the next day for lunch. We had cocktails number 4 and 13, the scallops, the pasta, the appetizers red pepper spread and fries and the brussel sprouts. For dessert the signature chocolate bread pudding with sour cherries. Everything was fabulous except for the dessert. Thought it was a little dry. We caught Chef Monica teaching a packed class upstairs. She was super busy but still managed to say hello and chat to a Top Chef James Beard watching fan. I immediately left and purchased her online cookbook. Great service and information from the staff. Will plan to see them again next time in Houston!"

  • "We love the food at Sparrow but are continually surprised at how lax the wait-staff is. Would highly recommend the food but the marginal service leaves much to be desired. Perhaps more training?"

  • "We had amazing food and a beautiful table outside. The hostess was slow to seat us despite our reservation and despite having a couple of tables ready but, in fairness, they were overwhelmed with customers as it was a special occasions. Once we were seated the service was surprisingly prompt and very courteous. We had the set menu and the food was amazing."

  • "For a restaurant where the chefs name feautures on the outside of the building I had expected more of the food. The service was great and knowledgeable (the people who cleared the plates however were borderline rude and impossible to understand), the ambiance is very nice and the cocktails are very well made. However, the food was somewhat of a letdown for the price you pay (sides come separate). The grouper was fresh but overcooked and the scallops underwent the same fate. Also the sides were good, but nothing exciting or bursting with flavor.I understand the concept of fresh local ingredients prepared with no frills, but that can still be exciting and this wasn't. If I come back, it will be for a cocktail or a glass of wine at the bar."

  • "Food was excellent. Made the mistake of ordering the "off the menu" Ribeye instead of the filet on the menu and was stuck with sticker shock when the bill came. Usually Ribeye is comparable to Filet or even less expensive and this was nearly triple the price. Appetizers were amazing (we had the dumplings and empanadas) but too expensive for 4 bites of food (literally). Overall good experience but spent over 250$ for 4 people to dine and 2 of us had water to drink and no one had dessert. Best side we tried was the brussle sprouts."

  • "My experience at Sparrow was enjoyable in all regards. The restaurant is unassuming from the outside, but as soon as you step inside, it has the feeling of a hot spot in a city more like New York. I had made a reservation and was glad to see that my table was ready immediately. Our waiter, Peter, was personable without being obnoxious and made excellent suggestions for all food courses and wine. The tables are indeed very close together, but I didn't find the noise level too high; I could still converse with my friend without shouting. Everything I had was delicious without being pretentious. I look forward to dining at Sparrow more in the future."

  • "We don't consider ourselves foodies, and we normally do not write poor reviews, BUT I felt cheated when I left Sparrow. The food was room temperature and came out before our drinks even made it to the table. I would not suggest this place to any of my friends."

  • "We are relatively new to Houston, and so are just discovering the wonderful restaurants that seem to abound in this city. Monica Pope's Sparrow is certainly up there among the best we've tried so far. How often do you take a bite of something and just melt because the flavors are so amazing? That's what our meal was like here. The two of us had more than enough food with a couple of starters, three sides (two would've been enough) and one main plate, which we split. Monica came over to meet us just as we were looking at the dessert menu, and when we couldn't decide what to order, sent us a complimentary tasting sampler. Just wow! Service, check; cocktails, inventive and delicious; wine list, discerning. We will be back!"

  • "Outstanding food and service. Attentive waiters, every one of them. Tino is excellent maitre d'. We searched a dozen restaurants inside Loop for holding dinner for 35 people. This is the best. The cost, complete with wine, gratuity and tax was reasonable and within agreed budget. The second floor party room has ideal size and ambience for such an event. All the attendees were pleased and wowed with dining experience. I recommend it highly and would do it again."

  • "My friend Lisa and I have been fans of Monica Pope's since the Boulevard Bistro. T'afia was great - but the decor was a little too "elementary school cafeteria" for me. This was our first visit to Sparrow and we LOVED it. The roasted Brussels sprouts killed! Thanks to our waiter for urging us in that direction. Thank you for a lovely and luscious evening."

  • "We went (early-5:30) on a Sat. night with 6 adults, a five year old, and an infant to celebrate two family birthdays. They were very accommodating of our dietary and general needs, and the food was very good. The Brussel sprouts are the best anywhere!! This is one of our favorite places to go whether it is just two of us or we are celebrating a special occasion."

  • "I really wanted this to be good, I have read so many things about this place, I assumed it was going to be spectacular. The entrees were flavorless and the service was terrible. The stuffed date appetizer and one of the 2 "$10 cocktails" I had was excellent. Needless to say, I will not be back."
