A word from Sparrow Bar + Cookshop
Celebrated Houston chef and restaurateur Monica Pope left behind the landmark local eatery t'afia in its prime to chart a new culinary adventure – a fresh start that is a result of Pope's continually evolving dialog with food, family and community.

Sparrow Bar & Cookshop is a back-to-basics concept that finds its story in the intimate, 1940s-era warehouse building at 3701 Travis Street, where t'afia was born and helped to re-gentrify a now bustling neighborhood. Sparrow represents a new freedom, a more free-flowing and easily sharable menu that often activates guest interaction in the final composition of dishes.

"At Sparrow, I am going to be cooking the things I would make at home for my family and friends – fresh, unpretentious and full of flavor," says Pope. "I want people to stop by without a reason or reservation, but we'll certainly accommodate that, too."

Dinner was great until we were made to feel rushed. The place was half empty and we had ordered appetizers, meals, and desserts. Not to mention drinks at bar before hand. It was in poor taste to not make us feel welcomed to linger. Only once was our water refilled. Will not done here again. Atmosphere was nice.

On a quiet Tuesday night a friend and I caught up at Sparrow. It was perfect, because it wasn't too crowded or loud, and we stayed for quite some time catching up. The wine list is excellent, and the prices are reasonable. We had the lump crab and shrimp, which was tasty but a little small to share if you are hungry. The side dishes are great- you can choose three for $18 and I highly recommend the mac & cheese. Monica Pope kills it, and I always enjoy my time at Sparrow!

This place emphasizes local eats and drinks. Everything comes from the Houston area. The cocktails were delicious and really set the mood for the night. The appetizers and sides are great to share with a group of friends or family. The veggies were some of the best I ever had. I have a new found appreciation for beets. 2 things I will recommend: the chick fries and the special mac and cheese.

Honestly I was not impressed at all with this place. I recall eating once when it was Tafia and it was pretty good. The food choices were slim and portions way too small. The mushroom dumpling appetizer had 4 tiny dumplings and was just OK. The only meat or steak dish was 5 slices of some sort of chewy beef , the shrimp and crab dish was a few shrimp and vegetables in some broth. The potato dish was just mashed potato's overall I was hungry when I left. If you are seeking another veggie grazing type place this could be it but for the prices and the so-so service I would not bother...Men generally want to feel like they have eaten when they leave a restaurant...

We are former T'afia fans, who finally decided to try Sparrow Bar + Cookshop. We were met and seated by a hostess, but it took 15 minutes before a waiter arrived to pour water. Nearly 10 minutes later, he stopped by to take our drink orders. 45 minutes after we were first seated at the table, our food arrived. Other tables around us were equally as frustrated with the lack of service. The cold atmosphere and very poor service far overshadowed the fact that the food was delicious. Sorry, Monica, you weren't watching over Sparrow that night and you've lost a couple of old time customers.

We were with a group of 10 at Sparrow on Saturday for brunch. There was one other large group in the restaurant, which was otherwise wide open. It took over an hour to be served and when the food finally came, much of it was cold. This place is tasty and creative, but service like this is intolerable.

They say they regular change the menu. What the point if u can't get it right the first time. Sauce for scallops was oily and tasteless. The breaded chicken breast literally had no spice in the bread crumbs. Amateurs could cook something just as good. With the chef being so "well known" I am very disappointed. Service was excellent.

First time dining here, and with someone special, but had heard great things about this restaurant. It certainly lived up to my expectations. The appetizers were wonderful, and all the dishes were very flavorful and had a touch of the unexpected. We like to share our orders, and our server was very accommodating for this request. Don't pass up on the sides - especially the Brussels sprouts - they are a treat unto themselves. I would recommend this restaurant and look forward to going again.

We enjoyed our experience apres theatre. The service was excellent, in fact many staff members kept asking to clear our plates. (We wanted to eat every morsel of bread, date pigs and the mushroom dumplings!) Chopped salad was excellent, as was the veal plate and the scallops. Conversely, the shrimp bisque was very plain, a definite disappointment and in sharp contrast to everything else. Sides of mac n cheese were so so, chick fries and mashed potatoes were very good. I'm a foodie/chef and would recommend this restaurant for a special occasion as the prices were high for some items. $18 for a mediocre shrimp dish, $8 for unspectacular mac n cheese. Overall nice dining experience (except for our friend who ordered the shrimp!)

The food can not be faulted but the service was mediocre. We waited over five minutes to be acknowledged and then another few minutes to be given a menu and drink order taken. We sat outside but unfortunately the music was too loud to really enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant. We will return because the food is so delicious but hope that the service can improve.

Chef Monica Pope has headed restaurants for several years in Houston and has an outstanding reputation. She redid T'afia into Sparrow, new ambiance and new menu with some favorites retained. Have never been disappointed. And Jess who has waited on us seveal times is the perfect waiter -- he remembers us and our particular needs.

Went on typical Saturday night. Our table of four had personable waiter, but odd service. Brought water and wine, but never followed up to refill either. First course came out fine with exception of 1 out of 4 wrong items ordered. Next, were served sides before entrees and all sides were served without utensils. By the time entrees and utensils came, sides were cold. Ordered two more glasses of wine without waiter first checking and pouring ample wine left in bottle. Again, he was very nice, but lacking the attention to basic service detail expected to be given at a restaurant of thighs is caliber. Owner was there, so not a case of off night. Love atmosphere, wished service and food matched it.

This was my third trip to Sparrow and once it again it has not failed to impress and satisfy. I love the stripped down repurposed look. The wines and beers are superb. The shiitake dumplings drip with umami and the macaroni and cheese is delightful. The waitstaff take excellent care of you and the ambiance creates a great vibe for flirting conversation and sharing. This was the worst service I have had in recent memory. It really ruined my experience, which is a shame because the food was good. However, only one dish was really amazing (we had a 5-course chef's tasting menu) and one was mediocre at best. Overall given the experience and having had more interesting food elsewhere for the price, I won't be returning.

This was our second visit to Sparrow, and we didn't enjoy it as much as the first time. Part of the problem was that our drinks did not arrive until we were done with our appetizers and into our main courses. Inventive food with twists on everyday dishes like mashed potatoes with a choice of 3 different toppings. Shiitake mushroom dumplings and chocolate-cherry bread pudding to die for. We thought that the starters, sides and desserts were way better than the main courses, which we could have skipped.

  • Mostly consistent Farm to Table
    PerryMason
    Dined on 8/9/2014
Sparrow is consistently farm to table, so freshness and an abundance of quality greens and vegetables is on the menu, along with pastured meats with both conventional and adventurous cuts. Recipes are kept simple, but Monica Pope has a good eye for combining unexpected ingredients and flavors to make the familiar more interesting. The use deep frying for some of the dishes (like the celebrated brussel sprouts) I think is a misfire on the healthy and fresh aspect, but there is enough on the menu to avoid that. See Candelaris for brussel sprouts done better in a small cast iron pan. Service is above average, but a little boisterous depending upon the server. They made a big mistake on my bill but I caught it and they fixed it promptly.

Sparrow is by far my favorite restaurant in Houston! Every time I go, there is something new and interesting on the menu. Monica Pope creates some truly thoughtful and delicious flavor combinations. Across the board-cocktails, starters, mains, side, and dessert-amazing choices in all categories! This most recent visit, I had amazing cucumber, feta, date and truffle oil salad that was inspiring! The feta was incredibly fresh and light. My main course was a cut of beef with miso caramel sauce that was delicious and a great complimentary flavor. Dessert was the pot de creme with figs. I was hard to keep from ordering a second one! If you enjoy inventive flavor combinations made with the freshest ingredients, you must visit Sparrow!
