A word from Sow's Ear
Sow's Ear Restaurant, established in 1986, is located in the Silverpick Lodge, one mile south of Durango Mountain Resort. Set amongst the beautiful San Juan mountains, the Sow's Ear is the longest running restaurant in the area with a new owner and head chef George Mehaffie taking over in May 2008 bringing new ideas and fresh seasonal menus to the restaurant, while continuing the tradition of "the best steaks on the mountain".   • "We spent 4 glorious days skiing in Purgatory and had dinner at this charming restaurant on our last evening. The view is extraordinary!!! We had a table surrounded by windows to the snowy mountains and were never aware of anyone else around us. Our friend ordered the calamari appetizer and my husband ordered the roasted beet salad. The 4 of us shared both plates and weren't disappointed. The entrees and desserts were equally delightful. Loved our final dinner in this lovely spot."

  • "We live several miles from Durango and my wife and I try once a month to go to Durango for a nice meal. Sows Ear is an extra thirty minutes from down town Durango but was well worth the time. The beef cuts are amazing as well as the sauces were very well prepared. We enjoyed the meal and the service was very good. Entrees came out at the right time and the staff never rushed us even for a busy Friday night. We will be back soon."

  • "We had a room and a reservation for dinner for Valentine's day, and the menu was delicious. We were seated next to friends of ours, and they had just received their drinks as we were placing our order. Our friend had a blue cheese stuffed olive in his martini, which is my husband's favorite, so he asked for the same. We were told the bartender "no longer wanted to make those, too busy", and we were refused. (strange, since it had been merely 2 minutes since our friend had been served) We thought that an odd way to cultivate a good customer service experience. The meal itself was good, the waitress was friendly and apologetic. I though that the bartender's inability to be acomodationg was an uncomfortable position to put her in."

  • "The food was good. The wine list was good but every bottle we ordered they were out. They did give us an expense bottle for a lesser charge. They charged us to stuff 4 olives with blue chesse Not sure why. We had some questionable charges on our ticket but overall the food was good."

  • "Food, service and ambience were all great. We skied in the afternoon so that we could stop there for dinner. We had reservations for 5 pm but got there at 4:30 and expected to have to wait at the bar. However, Chrissy seated us at a table right away and attended to our orders without making us wait until 5, when the restaurant actually opens. We had the calamari appetizer based on an OpenTable review, and it was the best we've had anywhere. I had the baby spinach salad recommended by Chrissy, and again it was the best. I had the ribeye, a thick portion done to perfection, and my husband had the special, sea bass with crispy skin. It was fabulous, very tender meat and the crispy skin added wonderful texture. We enjoyed dining there."

  • "We had a wonderful evening at the Sow's Ear. The menu was interesting and the service good. We loved the 'small plate' option. As vegetarians, we chose roasted beet and chèvre salad followed by the ravioli entree. The fig and shallot white sauce on the raviolis was delightful. I would encourage the Sow's Ear to offer more meatless options on their menu. Our friends had the small plate tenderloin and were delighted to find the meat was perfectly cooked and each bite delicious. New York cheesecake with blueberries followed. By the time we were ready to leave, the restaurant was packed. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. The atmosphere is lively as it appears there were several large groups there from the ski area. We'll be back."

  • "I made our reservation and had indicated we had just got married and this was our first dinner and was hoping for a nice quiet table. When we arrived, no one acknowledged us as a married couple, never once mentioned anything. In addition, it took 1 hr & 15 mins to get our food. It's like they didn't even care about acknowledging us for our marriage or that the food was late. They cited a 17 member table that caused our food to be late. It was very disappointing."

  • "Our waitress was never around too much she gave us about 30 seconds each time and rushed off again. It is like we were always an afterthought other people were her priority not us. One gentleman didn't even have silverware by the time dinner was served he had to get up and get it - that is ridiculous. We were sold cookies that take eight minutes to cook but apparently it takes 24 minutes to be delivered. When we made a reservation we told them it was for a birthday celebration however they made no mention of this fact. They also could have sold more cocktails had she been a bit more prompt and attentive to our needs. Each time she came to our table we felt like she was just rushing over and rushing away as soon as she could."

  • "Excellent cooking by Chef George Mahaffey, the roast quail w/ chanterelles was superbly cooked and the salads were flavorful and fresh. The elk tenderloin w/ blueberries was superb, tender and 'elkey'...as was the steak au poivre. Friendly service and great views. The desserts were the only disappointment, the carrot cake was moist and dense, pan-style but a bit simple in flavor. The panna cotta was a bit grainy and the gelée crown was a good idea but a bit sweet. I think the desserts can be refined to match the quality of the savory courses and all will be good at the Sow's Ear. Good job!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner and had exceptional service from special seating requests to attentiveness to any complaints. My roasted beet salad was crunchy (usually have beets softer when roasted) and the salmon had no seasoning (but was still good quality). I just wouldn't order that in the future. My husband's steak was overcooked and sauce not on the side as requested, but the replacement was perfect and our appetizer was comped.   • "We went to Sows Ear to celebrate my daughters's 5th birthday. The chef made her favorite cake from scratch for us. The food is really good, nice wine list. It's family owned and they make everything from scratch. Even the ravioli on the kids menus was made with fresh pasta. We liked it do much we went back again before we left for home. The staff is so friendly as well. Very comfortable place."

  • "This was a fabulous meal. Everything was perfect. The jalapeño cheese rolls were to die for & my husband is still talking a out the chocolate cookies 2 days later. I do wish Colorado allowed diners to bring their own wine as is done in California ,but a good wine list & the mark up seemed to be reasonable by restaurant standards, about 200%."

  • "We have been coming to the Sow's Ear for 6 years now, and it is the best restaurant between Durango and Silverton ... for that matter it is better than any of the Silverton restaurants, and all but a few of the Durango restaurants. They have a menu that allows you to enjoy a salad or a sandwich (good burgers and chicken sandwiches) for under $ 15 or you can go upstairs to the formal dining room for a big night out and enjoy their fancier appetizers and small plates and/or steaks, salmon, elk, and Colorado seafood. The bar area is friendly and cozy and easily handles up to 25 people."

  • "We've been once after skiing w/ our 4yo. We sat in the bar window w/ a great view. Going early around 4:30p was fine to bring kiddo. Food was good, but not outstanding for the prices. The Beet salad was nice and the greens fresh. The Petite Filet was cooked perfectly, but the potato side was homogeneous and uninspired. The blistered asparagus were a little overcooked. Pork loin could have been more tender. Kid options standard fare, but at least they offer a kid salad. Service was friendly and very accommodating. Would go back for a drink/appetizer, but probably not a full meal."

  • "The food was absolutely the best! Great menu, including " small plates" if you're not too hungry. We found them the right size. I had elk tenderloin, that was fantastic. Service was slow but I'm sure it was due to the place being completely full on Saturday night. A server may even have no-showed that night. The servers that were there were very friendly and helpful. This is really a great place with an awesome menu ."
