A word from Sovana Bistro
Sovana Bistro has been a staple in the Unionville community since opening in 1998 and has evolved into a highly regarded dining destination. The menu is made up of two sections - our well known "staples" and our always changing "taste of the season". The kitchen creates simple hand-made food, inspired from many areas of the world and seeks to source ingredients that are available in their appropriate season.

The service reflects a gracious approach to hospitality and genuine concern for each and every guest's experience.

  • "Probably dined at Sovana 30 or more times over the past 10 years. We love it!!! Menu choices are copious; preparation and presentation is great, and consuming all of it is heavenly!!! We have never never never been disappointed whether at lunch or dinner. Only possible criticism is ambient level (difficult to control with the architecture) - and it merely serves as proof that all diners are having a wonderful time! Anxious (already yet!) for next visit!"

  • "I don't know why it took us so long to visit this restaurant, but it did live up to it's hype! We liked the food, vibe, and atmosphere. we plan to go back this week with friends. Our waiter was nice, not too pushy about time and ordering. Definitely a like. Good neighborhood place (if the neighborhood is horse farms and fields)."

  • "We came here the night we got engaged and again for our one year anniversary. We came back hoping the food would be as good as it was the first time. About 18 months later the food was equally delicious. We are the type to order half the menu and not a single dish disappointed. Broccoli soup was our favorite. Also love the calamari, (not too heavy, great sauce,) the tuna tartar, the spaghetti dish with seafood. You can't go wrong. You can easily spend $150+ for two, or just as easily get away under $75. Service is awesome and the patio is charming."

  • "The restaurant is located in a beautiful area just north of Kennett Square. Food was excellent. Everything was very fresh and well prepared. Very creative menu selections. We especially enjoyed the" in season" selections. Delicious desserts. Our table was outside on the side patio. Lovely decor, perfect for a garden setting. The waitstaff was excellent, very accommodating and pleasant we will definitely come again."

  • "Have been many times before. Came for our 10th anniversary and power was out (summer storm about 40 minutes prior to arrival). Whole place was buzzing! Chefs with headlamps and candles all around, great service, great attitude by staff handling power outage, food excellent as always. Cheese selection was delightful as were the snails."

  • "We've been to Sovana Bistro for several special occasions and always came away thinking "Wow - that was phenomenal." Not this time. The service used to be informed and polite without being overbearing. Our waitress forgot three different items (drinks, appetizer, dessert.) It was a barely 15% tip night. The menu seems to have changed with fewer unique offerings. The sides served with several entrees were bland - in taste and appearance. There was no WOW factor to the food at all. In previous visits, we were anxious to share plates and excited with our choices. This time, the only comment was that the food was fine. I don't want "fine" for a $250.00 meal. I'm in search of a new BYOB for our next special occasion."

  • "Had a last minute whim to head up to Sovana. Got a table via the app and were seated within five minutes of arrival at a table right next to the door. Turns out it was the "chef's table", which had a couple of glasses of champagne along with the meal. Nice touch! Had the seasonal octopus and lamb appetizer along with the pesce fra diavalo pizza. All was excellent! Service was attentive, but not intrusive. Topped off with a cheese plate and pound cake for dessert. Could not have had a better night out on a moment's notice. We come to Sovana a few times a year and have always been impressed with the food, service and atmosphere. Our favorite!"

  • "Had a great meal on a recent Friday night. Beau at the bar gave great service and made some delicious drinks! Jenn, our server, knew when we needed her and was right there. Two guests had the pizza, I had the fish special, and one guest had the pasta. Everything was delicious. Would definitely recommend this restaurant, but get a reservation. Busy place!"

I would not recommend for a first date, I had called in advance and asked for a table that was not boxed in close to another couple given it was a first date....and I was placed right next to a couple on a small end table by the wall next to a a room that had a booth (the larger group was very loud and it was hard to hear and focus on my date - so I just really wanted to leave and go to somewhere more private and casual). Savana Bistro came highly recommended and is very nice and trendy, but I found my first experience not a good one given I had requested better seating and for the money felt I really should have gone somewhere else... The waiter was great, food was good..."

  • "Sovana continues to impress! The food is always quite good for lunch, but the dinners are simply awesome and unforgetable! We had the on-premise made pasta with bolognese and the veal filette with wild mushrooms and reduction sauce, served with a side of potato au gratin for mains paired with a super Tuscan. We have never had anything better, even in Italy, and were left speachless. For apps, we had the octopus and apple-arugula salad served with Sangria. Everything was outstanding! The Sangria is the best anywhere and is visually stunning! Nothing compares - we highly recommend trying the Sangria - it is not sweet, it is fruity, herbal, dry and delicious - all at the same time! Bon Appetit!"

  • "My husband and I took friends here as a thank-you for their chauffeuring service during a recent trip; none of us had eaten at Sovana Bistro before. Having heard positive comments about it from others, we were not disappointed! We ordered from the Prix Fixe menu-a good bargain-and got a bottle of red wine. My husband is gluten-free, noted in my reservation and immediately asked about by our server. She informed us what he could eat and suggested a gluten-free beer, which my husband said was "pretty good"! Besides our three courses (starter, entrée, and dessert), servers brought test tastes of two kinds of slaws. All food, including an ample bread basket, was delicious, and service was exceptional. We will definitely eat there again!"

  • "My wife and I went to Sovana for our anniversary. Service was excellent-friendly, professional but unobtrusive. We enjoyed all our dishes which were well-prepared from seasonal ingredients. Because of our anniversary, we were comped one of our desserts. However, the physical surroundings were somewhat cramped. We sat at a two-top next to a wall just before the restroom entrance (so much for OpenTable VIP status). The table was narrow barely holding our meal. I had to sit on the edge of my seat as the small chair dug into my sides (and I'm of average build) - they appear to have been built to hold the anorexic posteriors of Chateau Country ladies. It was a tight and uncomfortable squeeze to make our way out without bumping into other diners."

  • "I Was really excited about returning to Savon a bistro after years of not having a meal there, Sadly my experience was not that great. Even though I had a reservation we still waited over 20 minutes for our table.when we got our table, it was after we had been forgotten about and Asked again if our table was ready. Once seated we waited another 15 minutes for our waitress to come and take our order. It was a very long long experience. When I got an email from OpenTable saying that we had missed our reservation it then made it clear that they never actually checked me in. Sadly my return experience I felt very very unappreciated and unimportant as a client. I do have to save the food was really really good."

  • "We took a friend to Sovana to celebrate her new job. Our server was very friendly and helpful and fun to talk with. The salads were heavenly as usual and the entrees more than ample. I had an unusual entree, ravioli that turned out to be heavily flavored with anchovies. While I like anchovies in general and on pizza specifically, this was a bit over the top. So, the point is to read the fine print on the menu before ordering! We left a nice tip for our server because she was so helpful and the food was, as usual, excellent."

  • "For our vegan 25th anniversary, our server arranged for a completely vegan tasting menu--it was a delicious surprise that took the menus out of our hands and have us a splendid array of vegan dishes. The only glitch was the timing of our cocktails--they were so large and late in coming that it was hard to finish them and the nice bottle of wine we had brought. A small quibble, though. The meal was really a wonderful treat!"

The tables are close and the ceilings high, which means you can barely hear a table conversation. It is worth putting up with the noise because the food is quite good and innovative. "
