Diner Reviews
  • "Good was great. There were six I our party so I got to taste several items and all were good. The ribs were tender and meaty. Grilled Watermelon salad was very fresh and light. The bread pudding was he best. Couldn't stop eating it."

  • "I am from Louisiana and could not wait to try out Southern Rail's menu. We had a party of 6 and we all very much enjoyed the meal and the ambiance at the restaurant. We had fried green tomatoes, cornbread and the brioche rolls to start. All were very tasty. Great bourbon drinks and wine list! Our entrees included several orders of peel and eat shrimp with french bread to dip in the sauce and an excellent chicken and sausage gumbo. We had to get the beignets for dessert and they were great."

  • "There were four of us. We all agreed the food was good, prices agreeable, waitress well trained, pleasant and helpful. HOWEVER , the noise level was to the point that we were shouting to converse. Admittedly, we are of the "older" diners who enjoy our evenings together and wonderful conversation. Therefore, we will not be returning. I doubt lunch-time would be any different."

  • "We had a very pleasant experience at Southern Rail. Our waiter was especially nice and helpful. The spareribs I ordered were the hit at our table. The men felt their steak was acceptable. The other female ordered the duck and enjoyed it but felt it was a little salty. The restaurant is a bit noisy for us old folks, but we expect that anymore. We have good feelings about the Old Beefeaters restaurant and the Changing Hands bookstore so we came with a very positive anticipatory attitude. We were not disappointed."

  • "This place had it all. Wonderful food, great ambiance and chill atmosphere. I was little curious about the lucky cat in the bookshelf above the kitchen. Really cute but did not fit in with the décor? The brioche pull apart bread was my favorite part of dinner along with the white sangria. I can not wait to go back!"

  • "If you like a very loud place then this is your place. It was very difficult to hear the waiter or the person sitting next to you. Food was good and overall ambience was great."

  • "We had a fun evening with friends here recently. Try the smoked trout appetizer for a good starter to share. Chicken and dumplings are just okay - try the peel and eat shrimp instead. Very tasty, but very messy, so be prepared! Duck confit was also amazing. If you save room for desesrt, the pie in a jar was so good and the beignets are huge, light, fluffy and delicious - enough to share for sure. Another bonus - no valey required!"

  • "I was excited to try Southern Rail. I enjoy Beckett's Table and The Newton concept is too cool! I had a mixed experience. I am allergic to jalapeños (and it sucks living in the Southwest), not get me an epipen allergy, but an urgent care visit or two has results in unknown jalapeño. Usually menus let you know because of the spicy element. My menu options were limited because of this. My husband had the chicken and dumplings and was surprised that it was bland (not in need of heat, just more flavor overall). The watermelon salad, smoked trout and coconut cake were delicious! Service was excellent, I just don't know of we will return because of lack of options for me."

  • "My party of four shared several different small plates as well as the brioche and fried green tomatoes. All was VERY tasty and presentation was lovely. The small plates were ample. We sat off the main dining area in a smaller windowed room which was delightful as the noise level was very minimal and didn't interfere with our conversation. Can't wait for lunch service to begin in August. We all agreed that we would definitely dine at Southern Rail again."

  • "The menu is classic southern dishes with a twist. It is almost like southern tapas with the wide assortment of appetizers and salads that are creative and good for sharing. It is friendly to those wishing vegetarian and gluten free dishes. Nice wine assortment by the glass. Nice assortment of desserts that are perfect for sharing."

  • "I read a lot of reviews about Southern Rail. We've been long-time customers at Beckett's, so I knew the food wouldn't be ordinary and it wasn't. The special was delicious and the grilled watermelon salad was outstanding! My only disappointment is the lack of vegan selections beyond salads. We enjoyed it - and will definitely be back. Don't go expecting Beckett's, but do expect that the food will be just as wonderful."

  • "The menu offering was impressive. I saw much that would require a return visit to explore. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We have waited with much anticipation the opening of Southern Rail. It was worth the wait."

  • "The Fried Green Tomatoes with Pimento Cheese were out of this world. Enjoyed the bourbon cocktail and pichet of rose wine, too. Watermelon salad was really good but the chimichurri was an odd addition. Fried chicken was good but will order it without the honey drizzle next time. Green bean "casserole" was really, really not good. The beans were either canned or had been slow-cooked to the point where they tasted like canned. Really wanted to like it, but thought it tasted like something my grandmother screwed up when I was a kid."

  • "Great Restaurant. Southern food done better than we have had in Savanah and Charleston"

  • "Staff did an excellant job, very satisfied with them. Food from starters, to salads and entrees was very sweet and some were too sweet. Our table had a mixture of foods and we all had the same feedback. Beckett's Table, the sister restaurant is better on food taste. The noise level was horrible, could not talk to tablemates it was so loud. Staff kindly moved us and then located the very loud bar group to tables right by us. Kept assuring us that they are going to be doing some noise abatement coming up to try to address some of the noise level. The noise level made for a less than positive experience. Our group decided, down the road we will give it another try and see how things are."

  • "Although the noise level was the first sense that you recognize upon entering, I couldn't rate it beyond "energetic." I expected more all the way around. Food was OK but not special. The server never poured wine for us except the first glasses of each bottle we ordered. I ordered a catfish stew, cioppino style, but what came was a piece of fried catfish(which was delicious)on a bed of veggies and potatoes. Not really cioppino style."

  • "We share a BLT salad for appetizer and it was just flat, no taste to it. My entree, pork ribs on the other hand, are smoked and has just the right amount of bbq sauce so they are real tasty. Then come the desserts. They are just wonderful. We share the beignets and pudding. The beignets are warm and filled with light sweet cream. The pudding is soaked with real bourbon and just can't taste any better. A nice and tasty evening at Southern Rail!"

  • "The restaurant is quite nice. The food was very good and the service was as good as it gets. My only dissatisfaction was the noise level. The noise in the main dining room is very close to standing in the middle of a street crew of jackhammer operators. Fortunately, there is a back room with a few tables and an acceptable noise level. If you plan to have a conversation during your very fine meal you might want to ask for a table there."

  • "I am from the South and was hoping for a local restaurant that offers up some authentic southern dishes. Have to say, I was disappointed in the offerings here. The fried green tomatoes were pickled before being fried and that was sad. We enjoyed the pork loin. It was cooked perfectly, but the sides of greens and sweet potatoes were just okay. We enjoyed the BLT salad. The beignets were absolutely delicious and I would go back to have more of those! I guess I was hoping for more tried and true versions of the dishes I enjoy when I visit the South. These were new variations on some of those and although the chef may have enjoyed creating his own version of them, I regretted that we didn't get a real Southern food restaurant in town."

  • "The overall dining space is beautiful! Gorgeous wood ceiling and beams, beautiful lighting, and an amazing sliding glass wall. The drinks were amazingly priced (happy hour?) Kettle One martinis were only $7! Service was excellent, Mike had a gift for explaining recipes on the menu that helped you taste the food without anything in front of you. We started off with the Fried Green Tomatoes which had a delicious spread accompanying. I thought the duck was delicious. The Chicken and dumplings was given an "ok" as the dumplings were very tough - the chicken was flavored nicely, but the sauce/broth was the best part. The Pork Loin was a generous cut but was very dry and lacking flavor. The sweet potato that came with the pork was life changing!"

  • "The food was a really cool twist on traditional southern food. We started with the bacon and onion tart -- flaky crust, tasted amazing. I had the chicken and dumplings -- fantastic melody of flavors. There were enough wines on the list to be interesting to a person that likes wine, but not so many to make selecting a wine a full time job. The waiter was knowledgeable, friendly and we didn't feel like we were being rushed. I'll definitely make it a regular stop."

  • "reservation was honored with on-time seating. a big plus. hostesses were very friendly. as for the food: our companions ordered the fried green tomatoes to share as an appetizer. First, the portion was not to share. 4 slices of tomato, not very big for sharing, and there was more batter than tomato. The pimento cheese which came with the dish was excellent. 2 people ordered the cornbread salad as an entree. reading from the menu it sounded delicious, which, it was, but for $11.00, it was not a regular salad amount, let alone an entree amount. The value was not there for the amount being charged. And, one of the women specifically told the server the salad would be in place of an entree. he said nothing to the contrary"

  • "First, as I was waiting at the table for my friend, I simply sat for over five minutes without even a greeting from our server. Then, he was nice enough, but somehow not connected. The food was o.k., not the "wow" we were hoping for, except for the bread pudding at the end. Not being meat eaters, we asked specifically if there is meat in the croquettes. Our server assured us there was not, but that it was made with chicken stalk. Big bummer to cut one open and have sausage pouring out of it. No problem to return them and remove from the bill, just disappointing! it was so noisy inside that we were literally yelling at each other to be heard. Not planning to return."

  • "Overall the food was very good. Wish the restaurant was located further north, I would dine here often."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "First off, this place is going to have a major issue if it can't figure out is parking. No valet and no adequate parking will lead to lost business in a hurry. The food is very bland. Cornbread wasn't cooked all the way, but even if it had been, it was in no way memorable. Fried green tomatoes were dry and uninspired, nothing different here. The gumbo was the best thing going, but not even a gumbo, but a stew. No reason to return. It's a crime that they tout that they've somehow retained the beefeaters atmosphere. Not even close. Hipster garbage."

  • "Southern Rail was a fun fine. This new restaurant had fun themed cocktails, placed their children's menu inside children books, and had amazing food. Staff was extremely friendly and service was very prompt."

  • "Good opening month. Loved the service, great job renovating the old beef eaters. Food was good, but not fantastic for the price. Overall, good experience but the food a bit below what I expected. I would like to try it out again in a few months after the menu is better worked out."

  • "Noise level is incredible. Waiter had to yell to be heard. Service was very good. Food was excellent. Definitely will return. Parking is a little tricky. Wonderful to see such an improvement to the neighborhood."

  • "Southern Rail is a great addition to an area that has lots of neighborhood joints that serve good food but need a facelift. SR has the ambiance just right - clean, bright, comfortable with lots of seating choices. The tomato tart was the star of the show for me. Have had fried green tomatoes all over the country and these were so-so (too thin so they tend to be dry), although the pimento cheese side was a knock-out. Main courses were good (duck comfit, andouille gumbo) but the apple cider pork stole the show. The beet salad was ok. Wine selection was nice - with some good local choices, not too much variety on the beer. Bread pudding was really flavorful but had more of a cake consistency. Service was SLOW through the whole dinner."

  • "Did a quick stop by Southern Rail Recently. We love Beckett's Table so looked forward to it. We only had soup and salads, Cornbread salad and BLT salad, they were both a little too artsy and weird for us. The soup; smoked chicken and sausage gumbo was excellent. My main beef was the noise level, bad acoustics, and loud music piped into the space, made it very hard to have a conversation. I understand many like this "energetic" vibe, but for us, it diminished out dining experience. On the other hand, the service was first rate...."

  • "New restaurant. SO excited to try! Great vibe when we walked in. Busy with a good mix of diners. Nice interior design. Salad was beautiful and fresh with great dressing. Brioche pull apart rolls and apple butter yummy. Smoked trout small plate a bit dry, but ample portion. BBQ Tuesday special was a platter of French fries covered with sauce and you needed a search party to find the meat. On the side were greens so bitter my husband gasped. Won't be ordering that one ever again! Will go back and try something else though. It has promise."

  • "Beautiful renovation. By the time we got to the restaurant, 7:30 on Sunday, several entrees were no longer available. We ordered, selected wine, thensome 15 - 20 minutes later were told that our entrees "just sold out." The meals we then ordered arrived promptly, were good, considering the price point, but not exceptional."

  • "Southern Rail has only been open one week. A 6pm reservation and the place was booked. The quality of the food was quite good, but I'm waiting to see fried chicken on the menu before I return. My only complaint is that the noise level was loud. I absolutely hate screaming at my dinner companions."

  • "The biscuits are homemade and tender. If I could fill a picnic basket full of anything, these biscuits would be among the things I would add. The other dishes were tasty and well prepared but the biscuits were memorable and one could tell that the recipe used has definitely withstood the test of time. "
