Diner Reviews
  • "The trout was excellent, very good service, and the ambiance was quite nice. Also ordered a French Martini that was the best. I have already recommended the restaurant to a neighbor. We will definitely return."

  • "All 3 of us in my party agreed our meals were outstanding and the price was a good value. The noise level is high in the restaurant but other than that it was a perfect night out."

  • "Got pretty noisy as they seated everyone in the same area. Made it a little difficult for conversation. We were there at the busiest part if lunch. I think next time I'd ask for a different table.."

  • "We had great food and service and will return to the restaurant again in hey he near future. The outdoor option is a bonus."

  • "Food good, not exceptional. Service a bit forgetful and a bit unprofessional, but pleasant. VERY NOISY. Would come for lunch more often if seating more comfortable and noise problem solved."

  • "A group of us for my girlfriend's 50th birthday and we all had a great time, enjoyed great food and awesome service. They were accomidating (we brought a cake from Maxie B's-there was a small serving fee). Every part of the evening was awesome."

  • "Our server was FANTASTIC. He knew the menu backwards and forwards, and was able to answer all our questions and give great recommendations. (I don't remember his name, but he had Harry Potter glasses.) Everything was delicious. I HIGHLY recommend the chocolate mousse."

  • "I brought 12 of my friends here for lunch. We sat outside under their large tent - they had fans moving the air around - and it was very pleasant even though the temperatures were in the low 90's that day. Service was prompt and attentive. Arrival of food was quick - even for that large of a group. Food was excellent. Really great lunch!"

  • "I've been enjoying Southern Lights through changes and moves for twenty years. It remains an excellent choice for dinner as a couple or with friends. The menu is good, the specials are often delightful, and the service is consistently spot on. The addition of a patio is appreciated. Southern Lights is a Greensboro classic."

  • "The menu has changed - less variety - may be this was just for this week (Memorial Day) or just for the summer. My rib-eye steak was more fatty than I would have expected, but otherwise good. The salad had some wilted and old greens - unacceptable."

  • "Excellent food, and very sensitive to our special dietary needs. The restaurant also features great artwork."

  • "This was our first time at this restaurant. We were seated immediately (had reservations). The menu was limited but did contain an eclectic assortment of entrees. I chose the lamb with brussel sprouts and purple potatoes. The lamb was good (served with a chutney). The brussel sprouts were not done and the potatoes were tasteless. The french bread was very good. We ordered wine to be served with our meal. The wine was finally brought to us after my husband had finished his entree and I was almost done with mine. We sort of had to gulp it down since we had nothing to enjoy it with. To end the meal, we ordered the bread pudding. It actually was french bread slices prepared with bread pudding ingredients. Probably will not return."

  • "I had a lunch meeting at Southern Lights. The food was excellent. I also recommended Southern Lights to a friend passing through town from Durham, and they absolutely loved it."

  • "The menu had a good variety but is relatively small. The flavors were outstanding. My group shared a lot of different dishes and all were amazing. Had the basil citrus martini that the bartender recommended and it was delicious. This is a wonderful foodie delight. music was a bit too loud as it was difficult to talk across the table. Service was slow on drinks, water refills and I did not care for the used plates and glasses that were left at my table even though my server stopped by a couple times and multiple staff passed by my table. As a restaurant mgr this is a big pet peeve. "

  • "Our group of ladies is delighted to have found this wonderful place. One of our friends recommended Southern Lights, and we couldn't be more delighted. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere, inviting; the service, impeccable; and the prices, unprecedented. We are fortunate to have found this little gem and will continue to visit every month!"

  • "The food, service, and atmosphere were AMAZING! Before I even arrived, I knew the dining experience at Southern Lights Bistro was going to be great. This was evident by the phone call I recieved to confirm the reservation and how pleasant the person on the other end of the phone was. When my party arrived at the restaurant the table was already prepared and we were able to sit right down. The service continued to be excellent for the duration of my group's time there. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was beautiful. "

  • "Southern Lights is consistently good - food and service. We had reserved a table for 5 and we got a 4 top with a chair at the end so we were cramped. BUT I only called ahead by an hour so that could have been the reason. I had asked for outside - all the tables there would fit 5 to 6 - but it had just been sprayed for bugs. There was a large table (3 - 4 toppers pushed together) in the room with us that was never used so it would have been nice if they had put together two of those for us so we weren't so cramped. I asked for a sandwich modification - roast beef with brie on croissant with herbed mayo - but they put horseradish sauce on it - and I don't like horseradish. I ate it anyway so as not to have to send it back."

  • "Food was terrific and service was perfect. One of Greensboro's gems."

  • "Perfection is the word I'll use to sum up my experience at Southern Lights Bistro. First of all, be sure to ask for Dena. She's very good. Second, try the Filet on top of the potato pancake. Third, the Key Lime Pie with Oreo crust. Trust me on the pie. Don't overlook this restaurant, they know what they're doing."

  • "Great stop for HP market week. The staff was very friendly and eager to please. My meal was very good, especially the truffle fries!"
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Not a great place to take large parties - definitely a lot of sound issues and as a result of it, ten 40-something women were continually reprimanded for talking too loud. We could barely hear each other, and in fact I could barely hear the manager, Nicki, each time she came to ask us to keep it down due to customer complaints. She even took the time to explain to us the acoustic issues, high ceilings, an NCAA final four basketball game going on - to which I suggested she explain this all to the complaining customers. But she said they were paying good money. (As were the TEN of us). We all go there frequently. I won't return there with any more than 3 other people. But I have to say that even with a small group it's hard to hear in there."

  • "Entrees were delicious...thought the cost was appropriate for the amount and quality of food. I had the new york strip which was served with truffle fries and brocoli. My date had the portabella mushroom entree. We shared the lobster and articoke dip for an appetizer. Rated the overall experience as a 4 instead of 5 because the servers seemed a bit unorganized."

  • "Dinner is great too, but I really love this place for lunch. The food and atmosphere are fantastic. I strongly recommend you go try it out!"

  • "The food was really good and it was served quickly. Our server was attentive but not friendly at all. We sat outside, which was nice, but an umbrella over the table would have been perfect. The server never smiled once. I was paying for two meals and another person at our table was paying for two meals. When she brought everyone's bill, she had mixed them up and put someone else's on my ticket (their entree was $2 more than mine). I mentioned this to her and she said, "Oh yeah, I must have just mixed yours up with hers - it's only like a $1 difference, right?" I said, "Yes, it's only $2". And then she walked off. It's not the money that matters but I thought this was very rude and presumptuous of her."

  • "First time customer so I have not tasted many dishes on the menu. The scallops were very tasty and the presentation was good and very different as they were served along with Italian hot sausage which was not something I liked. I would say the food is good but not outstanding. The outdoor area looked very appealing for spring and summer dining."

  • "But... Menu was limited. Slow to take our dinner order, faster on drinks and appetizer. Food was good, but not outstanding. For the price, I expected more."

  • "Greensboro doesn't have many good restaurants, but Southern Lights is one of them. I've tried a few dishes, and all have been good. For this visit, we had moderate difficulties getting drink refills which is unusual. The servers are always polite and professional. The prices are similar to Nattys or Greys, but the food is on e caliber of Josephine's. Portions are a bit small. So, order an appetizer if you're hungry."

  • "We were from out of town and really enjoyed this restaurant. The menu has a lot of variety and all of the items we had were delicious. The service was outstanding. They were happy to make sure everything was how you liked it."

  • "We enjoyed a fabulous lunch!! You provided a taste of the soup before we ordered---that was fantastic!!! Our food was outstanding and I was very pleased to have chosen this wonderful place to dine!!"

  • "This was another good meal at Southern Lights. It has become one of my favorite restaurants. The turkey lentil chili is a great appetizer. I've had several of the sandwiches, and they're great."

  • "The food was good and so was the service. Unfortunately the people we were sitting close to were the problem. It was a large party with a little girl that they let scream and run around the restaurant. I noticed it as soon as we set down and it appeared that they were getting ready to leave. I asked the server and she said yes they were on their way out but they ended up not leaving until 10 minutes before we did. I wish we moved to the bar side when we sat down."

  • "I had soup and salad for the second time in a couple of weeks. Both soup selections I tried (jerk chicken and chicken/lime/zucchini) were especially tasty; when I told the server that the soup was good but not very hot, she just said she would tell the chef--no offer to reheat it. Water for tea was also not very hot. The salads on both days were very fresh and crisp, with a nice mixture of ingredients. The blue cheese dressing was really good--big chunks of cheese."

  • "The food was excellent, but it too an inordinate amount if time to get our drinks and appetizers. The main entrees arrived in a timely manner. The bar was apparently backed up. It todo over 20 minutes to get our first drink and subsequently to get a beer. I would like to think that the bar would be the fastest service given the amount of money made on alcohol. But we had a very pleasant meal. The server was really knowledgable and attentive."

  • "Nothing special about this place. Good for a nice lunch, not for dinner, business or casual. When ordering we found out that two special of the day, advertised on the chalkboard at the entrance were no longer available. The star of the night: Martinis prepared at the bar."

  • "I have been to this restaurant three times now, twice for lunch and this time for dinner. The food is always great however the service is always lacking. This would be one of my favorite places to eat if the service was improved. My fingers are crossed!"
