Diner Reviews
  • "Perfection is the word I'll use to sum up my experience at Southern Lights Bistro. First of all, be sure to ask for Dena. She's very good. Second, try the Filet on top of the potato pancake. Third, the Key Lime Pie with Oreo crust. Trust me on the pie. Don't overlook this restaurant, they know what they're doing."

  • "Great stop for HP market week. The staff was very friendly and eager to please. My meal was very good, especially the truffle fries!"

  • "Not a great place to take large parties - definitely a lot of sound issues and as a result of it, ten 40-something women were continually reprimanded for talking too loud. We could barely hear each other, and in fact I could barely hear the manager, Nicki, each time she came to ask us to keep it down due to customer complaints. She even took the time to explain to us the acoustic issues, high ceilings, an NCAA final four basketball game going on - to which I suggested she explain this all to the complaining customers. But she said they were paying good money. (As were the TEN of us). We all go there frequently. I won't return there with any more than 3 other people. But I have to say that even with a small group it's hard to hear in there."

  • "Entrees were delicious...thought the cost was appropriate for the amount and quality of food. I had the new york strip which was served with truffle fries and brocoli. My date had the portabella mushroom entree. We shared the lobster and articoke dip for an appetizer. Rated the overall experience as a 4 instead of 5 because the servers seemed a bit unorganized."

  • "The food was really good and it was served quickly. Our server was attentive but not friendly at all. We sat outside, which was nice, but an umbrella over the table would have been perfect. The server never smiled once. I was paying for two meals and another person at our table was paying for two meals. When she brought everyone's bill, she had mixed them up and put someone else's on my ticket (their entree was $2 more than mine). I mentioned this to her and she said, "Oh yeah, I must have just mixed yours up with hers - it's only like a $1 difference, right?" I said, "Yes, it's only $2". And then she walked off. It's not the money that matters but I thought this was very rude and presumptuous of her."

  • "Dinner is great too, but I really love this place for lunch. The food and atmosphere are fantastic. I strongly recommend you go try it out!"

  • "First time customer so I have not tasted many dishes on the menu. The scallops were very tasty and the presentation was good and very different as they were served along with Italian hot sausage which was not something I liked. I would say the food is good but not outstanding. The outdoor area looked very appealing for spring and summer dining."

  • "But... Menu was limited. Slow to take our dinner order, faster on drinks and appetizer. Food was good, but not outstanding. For the price, I expected more."

  • "Greensboro doesn't have many good restaurants, but Southern Lights is one of them. I've tried a few dishes, and all have been good. For this visit, we had moderate difficulties getting drink refills which is unusual. The servers are always polite and professional. The prices are similar to Nattys or Greys, but the food is on e caliber of Josephine's. Portions are a bit small. So, order an appetizer if you're hungry."

  • "Southern Lights Bistro has some of the best food and service to be found in the Greensboro area. I highly recommend this place."

  • "We were from out of town and really enjoyed this restaurant. The menu has a lot of variety and all of the items we had were delicious. The service was outstanding. They were happy to make sure everything was how you liked it."

  • "We enjoyed a fabulous lunch!! You provided a taste of the soup before we ordered---that was fantastic!!! Our food was outstanding and I was very pleased to have chosen this wonderful place to dine!!"

  • "This was another good meal at Southern Lights. It has become one of my favorite restaurants. The turkey lentil chili is a great appetizer. I've had several of the sandwiches, and they're great."

  • "I had soup and salad for the second time in a couple of weeks. Both soup selections I tried (jerk chicken and chicken/lime/zucchini) were especially tasty; when I told the server that the soup was good but not very hot, she just said she would tell the chef--no offer to reheat it. Water for tea was also not very hot. The salads on both days were very fresh and crisp, with a nice mixture of ingredients. The blue cheese dressing was really good--big chunks of cheese."

  • "The food was good and so was the service. Unfortunately the people we were sitting close to were the problem. It was a large party with a little girl that they let scream and run around the restaurant. I noticed it as soon as we set down and it appeared that they were getting ready to leave. I asked the server and she said yes they were on their way out but they ended up not leaving until 10 minutes before we did. I wish we moved to the bar side when we sat down."

  • "The food was excellent, but it too an inordinate amount if time to get our drinks and appetizers. The main entrees arrived in a timely manner. The bar was apparently backed up. It todo over 20 minutes to get our first drink and subsequently to get a beer. I would like to think that the bar would be the fastest service given the amount of money made on alcohol. But we had a very pleasant meal. The server was really knowledgable and attentive."

  • "I have been to this restaurant three times now, twice for lunch and this time for dinner. The food is always great however the service is always lacking. This would be one of my favorite places to eat if the service was improved. My fingers are crossed!"

  • "Went on Valentine's Day with reservations. Place was packed. Seated in a side room of about 10 tables so was on the quiet side. Waiter was friendly but not that attentive. Had to flag down several times for refills. Arrived at 7 pm and already out of sea bass which was a major disappointment for spouse. Ordered the pasta with scallops and that made up for the disappointment as it was very good. Portion was huge permitting a second meal the next day. I had the beef filet that was also very good, but the sides were disappointing. The mashed potato bedding was on the dry side and the grilled asparagus could have benefited for more grilling for my taste. Wine menu was varied and prices reasonable. A number of options for dessert."

  • "Nothing special about this place. Good for a nice lunch, not for dinner, business or casual. When ordering we found out that two special of the day, advertised on the chalkboard at the entrance were no longer available. The star of the night: Martinis prepared at the bar."

  • "We've especially used this for Valentines Day every year. The food is always fabulous. Subtle twists to traditional fare offer great new choices and tastes to sample. We consider this establishment part of our tradition now, but any day is a good day to go. Don't miss the delicious desserts, either."

  • "Our most recent trip confirmed that Southern Lights is still one of the best restaurants in Greensboro. The meals were great. I had chicken curry soup and a turkey sandwich. My wife had a pita. While we were in the mood for light meals, the restaurant also has lage entrees. Service was excellent."

  • "SL continues to offer delicious food and excellent service. The menu is varied and offers something for everyone. Both the fish (salmon is a favorite) and meat entrees (the filet is wonderful) are prepared well and are cooked to the diner's choice of temperatures. The portions, while not huge, are generous. The seating in the front of the small restaurant is fine unless one is sitting too close to the bar on a busy night. I am not a fan of the back room and find it to be noisy and sterile. All that aside, the food is great and the service is great too. I highly recommend SL if you enjoy quality foods at reasonable prices!"

  • "We've gone several times now, and I think we're probably through. Nothing awful, just not up to par with the comparable restaurants in town. Service is always good- a really friendly waitstaff- but the overall experience never adds up. I've not been very impressed with the menu, or the ultimate quality of my meal. When the bill arrives I'm reminded I like Josephines or Reel better... I miss the old Southern Lights."

  • "I loved the front of the restaurant. They put in the very back next to the wall where the kitchen help were in and out the entire evening. You would think we would get a table for two in front where they were several and completely empty when we left at 9 pm . why even have a table there????"

  • "The food and service were very good and I would have recommended it if I had not received a very negative email from open table claiming I did not show up for the reservation. It would be very easy to go back to the credit card receipts and see that I was there. We must not have been very impressive to be totally missed Mackey McDonald"

  • "Chicken breast was tough and dry, broccoli was undercooked and could not be cut with a knife. Restaurant is very loud and no intimate tables or booths . All tables have an out in the middle of the floor feeling. Way overpriced for quality of food."

  • "my wife and i had a great date and a wonderful dinner. The food was great and we were never rushed. We wanted a nice evening of dining and enjoying each others company. We were able to do that with a 2 1/2 hour experience at Southern Lights. the only complaint that we had was that we ordered the crab cake appetizer ($14.95) and there was only one crab cake. it was delicious and the presentation was excellent, but we thought there would have been two for that price. in retrospect the menu does say "crab cake", not "crab cakes". this did not ruin an excellent evening. Greensboro needs more restaurants of this quality!"

  • "We had reservations and were seated immediately upon arrival, but it went down hill from there. Service was "relaxed;" definitely not an hour long lunch spot. The house salad and Savory Black Bean soup were excellent. The lunch specials were slow to arrive and sides on 2 of the 3 orders were cold. We waited another 10 minutes for hot sides and then the texture was definitely of food that had been re-heated. I will not be recomending the restaurant."
