Diner Reviews
  • "We are not locals. We tend to visit the area about every 6-months or so as we travel to some favorite vacation spots. We have found a visit to the Southern Inn Restaurant to be a delightful side trip and make special effort to include it whenever we can. the food, service and atmosphere never disappoint. The baked brie with pear compote was a delicious starter for Brunch. "

  • "My family and I always enjoy eating here, but this time, for some reason, the portions were significantly smaller. All for the same price!! I hope this is not their new setup. Also, the menu changed from a multi page menu to a one sheet front and back. So it may be a new management thing. "

  • "My daughter, husband and I had a delicious dinner at the Southern Inn, celebrating our anniversary. The server was excellent and catered to our special needs: Piscatarian, gluten-free and low-fat. The kitchen made everything from scratch including a delicious bouillabaisse with out the sausage. The entire staff made sure the rest of our needs were met. We had home-made ice cream and Grand Marnier Crème Brûlée, both delicious!"

  • "My wife and I met another couple here for a relaxed evening of conversation and good food. The food was excellent, and we had a great time visiting with our friends. The noise level was just right...not so quiet we had to whisper, but not so loud that we could not speak in a quiet voice. The only thing I would have improved was the service. Our waiter seemed slightly impatient and a touch awkward. I am willing to chalk this up to inexperience as he seemed quite young. It was not enough to hinder our enjoyment really, but just a tad strange a few times. We will definitely be going back."

  • "Excellent food and service. The honey mustard salad dressing is incredible. Shrimp and grits were very good and included more shrimp than many other restaurants I have tried."

  • "The Southern Inn is great for a nice dinner, drinks with friends or co-workers, or even lunch. The food was excellent with a great range of options. The staff are warm and friendly!"

  • "There were some real food high spots, but also some surprising lows. The portions were right and there were some delicious and well-balanced treatments of vegetables. The extensive list of wines by the glass were really appreciated. However, the bread untoasted was bland and when toasted, it was just too hard. The amount of butter was stingy. A Waldorf salad was wiped out by too much garlic and a too acidic vinaigrette. The bread pudding was too dry, although the flavors were comforting, it was underwhelming. Maybe a longer soak in the custard? More spice? After the dessert order the server disappeared for quite a long time, perhaps a kitchen issue, perhaps not."

  • "Fabulous brunch, reasonable prices, liver was "deliverous" and fried chicken on biscuit with gravy, bacon and potatoes was a surprising taste event thoroughly pleasureable and reflective of George Huger's creative cuisine. And the price was ridiculously low for the experience. Our waiter was excellent. My mother and I (when I was a W&L student in the late 50's used to have lunch at the Southern Inn.) I book on Open Table a great site. Avoir et a bientot!"

  • "Loved the flounder dish over cole slaw and peanut sauce. How do they grill it so nicely with gentle green grill marks? appetizer was baba ganoush with carrots and cucumbers - cleverly served and delicious. husband had waldorf salad with a twist - arugula! He enjoyed the oyster stew. white chocolate/mint ice cream excellent as was the pecan pie. when Dave winced at the first glass of cabernet, they brought him a different one. Waiter was helpful and prompt. just right"

  • "This place is great, especially if you have a reservation. It is a survivor - after the fire we were worried it would not re-open, but obviously it did and in an even better form - retained the old, comfortable feel, with new surroundings and facilities. Can be a little noisey, but great atmosphere. Always good service and great food."

  • "I have been dining at the Southern Inn for years. While the portions are on the small side, the food is superb. Reservatiins are strongly recommended especially during holidays and parent's weekends."

  • "We had dinner at the Southern Inn Restaurant on Valentines Day. We were seated right away when we arrived at our reservation time. We had excellent service, and the food was delicious! We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a special place for dinner."

  • "This place has an interesting menu and everything we had was delicious and presented beautifully. We have a 9 and 10 yr old and I wasn't sure if it would be ok for kids as they didn't have a published kid menu. But they have a burger on the menu, and one of the pork dishes comes with mac n cheese too, so they were fine. We were near the bar so it was a little loud, not quiet and romantic, but they probably have some corners of the place that are quieter. Very nice staff!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner immensely. We sampled three appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert. The wine list was more than adequate, and the food was prepared nicely. The wait staff was helpful, attentive and knowledgeable."

  • "Not really my style. Prefer a more quiet setting. Service was spot on, and the food was great. Would recommend for group dates, or dinner with the family."

  • "We never take a trip east without attempting to lag to have a meal there. Menu changes regularly and is always interesting southern contemporary with chef's emphasis on Chesapeake bay specialties. Great wine list too. Bes use to reserve because the Southern Inn fills up even on weekday evenings."

  • "The food here is delicious. Great southern comfort food. Must try the fried chicken and the meat loaf. Calamari was cooked perfectly. If you are in town skip the other restaurants and head straight for Southern Inn. My girlfriend loves this place we eat here every time she's in town."

  • "The Southern Inn is one of my favorite restaurants in Lexington, VA. It is extremely popular on weekends and definitely requires a reservation. When it is extremely busy the service is a bit slow. When not busy the meals come almost too quickly, but when busy there are definite lag times in service. The food, as always, was reliable and tasty. The Southern Fried Chicken is so good that I rarely venture away from it. The salads are crisp and fresh with a variety of homemade dressings available on the side.I always try to dine at the Southern Inn when I am in town and that is several times a year - that's about the strongest recommendation I can give it."

  • "We had a lovely meal last night; started with oysters - roasted and fried - followed by duck and the lamb special, and finished with the Inside Out Pumpkin Pie. All the dishes were prepared to perfection. The service, as always, very professional."

  • "The Southern Inn consistently satisfies and never disappoints. Always a good meal and good service from friendly people. The bar area was a bit too loud. We couldn't hear each other at the table. Too bad there isn't a way to shut off the bar from the restaurant. Otherwise an excellent evening."

  • "We've enjoyed Southern Inn on several previous occasions, but we tend to think of Brix and Red Hen for special dinners. On our most recent visit to Lexington, we had few choices on a Sunday night and so wound up with our party of eight at Southern Inn. We were pleasantly surprised by the creativity of the menu and the kitchen's execution. Although the restaurant was busy, our young server did a great job. We'll put Southern Inn back into our regular rotation."

  • "We came from out of town and the table was ready when we arrived. Great service from everyone. We started out with the spinach and artichoke dip in a bread bowl, which was wonderful and hot. I thoroughly enjoyed the scallops and bow tie pasta entree. He got the NY strip steak, which was huge and cooked perfectly. Great date night!!"

  • "The Southern Inn is more than southern cuisine. It is top notch cuisine at its finest. Patrons will find southern charm mixed with upscale ambience that yields innovative twists on southern classics as well as chef inspired dishes that are delightful to the pallet. This spot is great for dinners with friends, colleagues, or romantic partners."

  • "This is a local gem. If you are in the area, you really should give this a try. The food is very good. Coming from the north, this has some excellent food made with a southern twist. Try to catfish."

  • "Always love the Southern Inn. It is our go to place when we have out of town guests. You can always count on great food and service. I had the trout filet, a perennial favorite; just the right size serving, and always delicious. My husband had the veal medallions from local Mountain View Farm. I ate several bites, it was so good! Love the fact that our favorite hometown restaurant serves fresh meat and vegetables from our local farms. My family has frequented the Southern Inn since it opened, and now with new owners and a newer, healthier menu, not to mention the renovations it is now the best it has ever been. Plus, I am addicted to the homemade marshmallows served with the homemade pecan pie!"

  • "This is one of our all-time favorite restaurants. We make it a point to stay in Lexington and eat at Southern Inn whenever we pass through Virginia (about twice a year). A truly enjoyable experience."

  • "Having been there quite a few times in the past over the years (the old one too), I was disappointed in this visit. We were seated in a corner, even though the place was not crowded at all and we had a reservation. The waiter did not write down our order. As a result, when the others got their soup, I did not get my appetizer. I just waited, assuming it would come later. He re-appeared two or three times after clearing things away, announcing, our meals should be out shortly. They were not; a half-hour went by. He served our lunches and neither of us mentioned my appetizer. Everyone's meal was good, though not exceptional. The bill did not include my appetizer, so maybe he should have written things down."

  • "The Southern Inn is a great place for dinner in Lexington, Virginia. I always try to dine there when visiting my daughter. I have never been disappointed in my dinner. I love the southern fried chicken and mashed potatoes with fresh vegetables. Their menu has other perhaps more interesting items - but this is perhaps the best fried chicken I have ever had, so it's hard to pass up. The dinner salads are crisp and tasty as well. If visiting Lexington, i would highly recommend this restaurant. It is a favorite of the locals as well!"

Did not know what to expect and we got the best!! Quaint little town and a really nice restaurant. Food was excellent, prices great, waitress very friendly, and just overall pleasant experience. If you get a chance to go here for lunch, do it!!!!"

  • "We had brunch/lunch here last Sunday. As usual the service was excellent. I tried something new, the blackened chicken penne pasta. My only complaint was the portion was a little small. Otherwise is was delicious! My fellow diners enjoyed their meals. They had steak and eggs and French toast. We will continue to return to The Southern Inn when visiting Lexington."

  • "My husband and I went there the night after our wedding and again for our first anniversary. Both times our waiters were fantastic, personable, and talkative but not intrusive- often a tricky line to toe. Anyone traveling to Lexington should go to Southern, it is not an experience to be missed!"

  • "The Southern Inn went through a devastating fire several years ago, but is back and probably better than ever. The food was lovely, and the service was great. My only complaint is the noise level - but I'm not really sure what can be done. It is an energetic restaurant, with a busy bar. If no one has a hearing problem, it is fine."

  • "do not pass this restaurant up if you are in the area. Wonderful romantic dining, or have a gathering in the bar area. A quick bite to eat while you're out shopping for lunch? Any occasion... the food is extraordinary, the service is exceptional and you always feel like the guest of honor at the Southern Inn. We look forward to our visit every year!!! Thank you guys for always making us feel welcome."
