Wonderful, wonderful food. There is usually one specialty dinner a month were a brewery or winery is invited to talk about their craft. George, the owner and chef, does a fabulous job of pairing beverage and food at this events. I made the reservation with pretty short notice, yet the restaurant met my request for a secluded, quiet table. The staff were attentive but not intrusive, the food was phenomenal, and we were delighted when the server told us at the conclusion of our meal that the restaurant wanted to offer us complementary desserts to help us celebrate.
This was our first visit to Southern Inn, but it will not be our last. We are very glad that we did the food was some of the best meals that we ever had. My wife and I dine out a lot and to experience this great food coupled with great atmosphere and service is a true find. The menu is imaginative without being over ambitious. They made us all feel very special even though we were out-of-towners. The food was excellent in every way from salads to desserts. I am very fortunate I was able to get an honest review of Southern Inn from the TripAdvisor. Lexington Virginia and the southern Inn has both. It is a five star experience. I liked it so much I went back the next day. I would recommend this jewel for anyone and any occasion. My husband took me there Saturday night to celebrate Mother's Day. We ordered our usual Blackened Chicken Penne Pasta as it is our favorite. I have to say that it was not as good or as tasty as usual. The chicken was not blackened (probably only grilled), and it lacked any flavor at all. In the past I have been able to taste the fresh basil, garlic, sun dried tomatoes and roasted red peppers. Not this time. The only taste that popped out was the pine nuts.

We find it a relaxing little town to spend the night and eat a fine meal. We were saddened when the Southern Inn Restaurant burned down.
Seeing this restaurant back up and running even better than before is a delight. We missed stopping there while they were remodeling. Visited their other location but it just wasn't the same. His love of food shines through everything - from the beautiful restaurant remodel to crisp linens to the thoughtful menu choices - it is always a delicious experience. We were seated at a table with a window view into the kitchen. The girls had so much fun trying to figure out what was going on inside, and loved watching their desserts being created in front of them. The kitchen custom made a vegetarian pasta for the kids, and a vegan dish for my husband while I splurged on the special - crab cakes. The food was very well prepared and interesting. Good wine list. Charming service. I recently had the special Zuppe di Pesce (I think a better name would have been cioppino). There was a nice mix of fish and shellfish, severed in a bowl with veggies, herbs, and a really nice broth with several crostini. Bar and wait staff were extremely helpful (the bartender mixed our favorite cocktail after we shared the recipe with her). The bar and restaurant were very busy but staff gladly accomodated special requests. After a busy day of sightseeing we were readdy to relax and enjoy a wonderful meal in a lovely setting.
