Diner Reviews
  • "The menu for this restaurant is far more ambitious than the food that is served. My 16 dollar Tuna Tartar was mostly mayonnaise on avocado. The Brussel salad was tasteless and my partners' sliders were pieces of fried chicken on tired biscuits. The waiter didn't know the beer list because he had been off for a few days and had very little enthusiasm for his work and the restaurant looks dark and dirty. The high note was that the hostess saw my foot was in a boot and sat me downstairs instead of up where our reservation had placed us, the low note, was that we were then cancelled on Open Table and I had to call to get my points. She was completely lovely about it all but the restaurant needs much more than one person to be acceptable."

  • "This place was awesome. Great service, great meal, great atmosphere. We actually tried to go Saturday night but the restaurant was completely booked. Kinda glad we went Sunday though because it was a lot less crowded allowing for a more personalized experience. Everything we had was great, from the solid list of craft beer to the chocolate peanut butter cake to finish. I would absolutely recommend Southern Cross to everyone."

  • "I was so excited to check out this new spot, and really disappointed it was not that good. Our server didn't really make our experience good. We over heard a couple ask about the specials and we had to ask him of there was any. The food took almost an hour to get as people around us who got there after us were being served their entrees. When the entree came out I was so excited only to find my fish was raw as can be. What I was able to eat was good and was bummed out it wasn't cooked. By the time out server came back I just wanted to get out of there so I asked for the check and after a few minutes from taking our plates he apologized about the raw fish and deducted from the bill Hopefully is just a growing pain. Great concept"

  • "My friend and I had a great lunch celebrating his birthday. The food is awesome. I highly recommend everything on the menu! It is authentic southern cooking with a bit of flair. The pecan pie was the best I've ever had. The service was fantastic; warm and fun and welcoming. Our sever, Virginia was friendly and helpful. She arrived at the table with a big smile and when she found out it was my friends birthday went the extra mile and delivered his dessert with a lit candle and sang happy birthday to him. He was so touched. It meant s much to him. It proves that warm and gracious southern hospitality is alive and done well in Conshohocken at Southern Cross Kitchen. Thank you for a lovely experience!"

  • "A group of 8 gals visited on a late Friday night. It's a nice restaurant for groups. This night was a little loud due to a one man band, which made it a little difficult to here each other across the table. The service was good and she was knowledgable of the menu items. Overall, a good experience. I'd recommend the short ribs."

  • "Southern Cross Kitchen, has a very nice brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays. I like a place where I can get breakfast foods all day. One time I had the quiche which was delicious, and another time the omelet which was very good. I had lunch there during the week and found that disappointing compared with the brunch foods served."

  • "Food here is always great! Service was good as well. My only complaint would be with the knowledge of the servers regarding the dishes- My dining partner and I were sharing an appetizer and were leaning toward the Margarita shrimp. Wanting to make sure that there would be a suitable number of shrimp to share between the two of us, we asked how many it came with before ordering. We were told, without hesitation, 4- which seemed fine (2 for each of us). However, when the dish came, there were only 3, leaving one of us with a single shrimp as an appetizer. We would have ordered a different appetizer had we been told the portion size correctly- as this is clearly a dish meant for a single person! Otherwise, everything was stellar as usual."

  • "We were seated immediately with a really nice table. Loved the drink & food menu & we ordered the pork quesadilla app -really good but quite spicy!! - and the oysters & filet apps. Our meals were on the small side - jambalaya was excellent but a little lacking in the meat department - but were still very tasty. Lots of great flavors in all the dishes. The key lime and pecan pies were also quite good. Our biggest issue was with service. Half of our table got water right away, the other half ended up going to the bar to get theirs after waiting quite some time. One entree was overcooked & another didn't come out until the rest of the table was 1/2 way done! They just need to get the service into better shape, otherwise it was great!"

  • "Enjoyable dining experience. The crowded and loud bar is separated from the small dining area by only a few feet, but the noise level is acceptable. The service was attentive and pleasant. Skip the Caesar Salad and go for the flatbread with short rib and mac and cheese. It was large enough for the four of us to share and not want for more. For main courses we had one order of fried chicken, the catfish and the short ribs. Each dish was prepared well with the fried chicken and the short ribs standing out. The fried chicken was made up of two breasts and two thighs and was more than enough for the two women who shared it. There is a very good beer list and well made specialty cocktails. We'll definitely be back."

  • "I enjoy eating at Southern Cross Kitchen. I have been there twice for dinner but never for lunch and thought I would try it. I would never go back for lunch unless I was takig the rest of the day off. I get an hour for lunch and it took close to an hour for our lunch to come to the table. Not sure if it would have been better had I came later to lunch and not at 12:30 p.m...but I will never do that again."

  • "Very unpleasant experience overall. Food was mediocre at best. Shrimp 'n Grits - The grits was a tasteless, soupy chowder. Did not taste any goat cheese. "Jumbo shrimps" were the size of quarters. Crabby Benny without crabmeat - Was first brought out with crabmeat. Sent back and waited for 10 minutes. The yolk from one of the poached eggs had fallen off of the Benny when server arrived with the second plate. Fried Green Tomatoes (served in place of ham) was uncooked and distastefully hard. Accompanying asparaguses were tough and fibrous. Bellini - Despite the meal, the Bellini was one of the best we've ever had. The server should've given us a free drink given our extra wait time, but he didn't. Will likely never go back."

  • "We arrived a little early to enjoy a drink at the bar before dinner. We met with friends, and had a great experience with a friendly bartender whom had good knowledge and was engaging to interact with. When we were first seated at our table it was quiet, as there weren't many patrons upstairs yet, but it got energetic and lively soon after, which gave the room a different vibe. Our server described the specials with ease, and had a friendly and upbeat demeanor. Our food was perfect, everyone at the table enjoyed their meals. The owner was walking around and stopped by to ask how things were several times. She has a great presence to her, and you can tell she really enjoys seeing people having a good time and enjoying themselves."

  • "Very slow service, mix up on our order, greasy chicken. To their credit, they removed one of the two items from our bill, and we left a 20% tip on the remainder for our lunch. I'll go back to give another try."

  • "We were ready to walk out of this restaurant. We were seated promptly, but then after about 10 minutes no wait staff had come by to greet us. We were passed by waiters at least 5 times. Fried chicken sandwich and shrimp and grits were fantastic, but our service was terrible. I'd consider going back here for the food but if we got the same waitress, I'd ask to be re-seated. Also, the salad dressing on the house salad is really overpowering- too much red wine vinegar. They should try cutting it with a little more oil. Other than that our food was great. Work on your service and this could be a great little restaurant."

  • "I was introduced to this restaurant for a company happy hour. The drinks and food are amazing! I have gone back several times in the past three months for lunch, and have had a great experience every time. Parking is easy, although most parking in the area is metered but at least there is a lot right across the street. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to try something new or looking for southern cooking!"

  • "Any restaurant that has Mac & Cheese listed as an entree is ok by me! We've eaten at Southern Cross Kitchen several times for both lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. In addition to a mouth watering menu they also feature a robust craft beer offering and love to share a taste before you decide. We'll definitely be back again."

  • "Ate here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. The menu is better suited for lunch. Salads are very good. Small place and can be noisy but the weekday night that we went was not crowded after 8:00 so it was quiet. Bar looks very nice and I believe that you can order there too."

  • "Unfortunately we had a terrible dinner experience. The food and the wine were fair and our service was absolutely lousy. I had dined here for lunch before and it was great. Dinner was another story. I can't even believe our waitress was a real waitress. She was awful! The fried tomatoes were delicious but everything else was fair (including a dried out sea bass). We were seved a bottle without being offered a taste and a dessert tray was left on out table for a long time before we had to ask to have it removed."

  • "My wife had the Duck. It was small and she was finished before me. It's awkward to have your date sitting while you finish. The duck flavor was nice, but the fat wasn't rendered appropriately. The Fried Chicken was VERY good, but I was confused as to why they served it with a hot-sauce, which was very "buffalo-like". I asked the waiter for a side of gravy (which was beef), but still was a better condiment than the hot sauce. Recommend they offer a nice chicken gravy with the dish. Fried pickles were tasty, but soon boring. Perhaps other fried vegetables or sweet gherkins would have given it a better variety. The Guinness chocolate cake was dry and not very decadent. There are better choices on their desert cart."

  • "I live in Conshohocken and this Bar / Restaurant has been a GREAT addition to the area. It's slowly becoming my go to "local" spot. The food has always been fantastic - My wife and I were here for Valentines Day and loved the special menu put together. The beer menu is FANTASTIC. Its always updated - I noticed the bar tenders are knowledgeable on what they are selling and what new beers have just been tapped ect. The live music upstairs is always a nice addition too on weekends. My only complaint is I noticed for dinner that the service to the tables can be slow. The food comes out in a timely manner but refills on drinks / beers seem to be slow. That being said I will be back soon! 100% recommend this place. Great Bar/Restaurant!"

  • "This was our first experience at the Southern Cross and we will definitely be back! Our server was great, very attentive even though the restaurant was extremely busy. So many wonderful menu selections, it was difficult to choose. Generous portions at reasonable prices. There were 6 in our party and all expressed similar views. We look forward to our next dining experience at the SC!"

  • "When I made the reservation, I requested a quiet table since we were entertaining clients, and we got seated next to a party of 8 women, and across from a party of 6 young celebrants. Which is fine if we wanted to yell across the table. Then the food was just ok,and the service took forever. We will probably move on."

  • "Went here with my wife in December and was treated well and enjoyed the food. So I suggested to 3 friends that we go there last Friday after work and made 6:15 reservations. The owner told us we could not be seated until our 4th arrived at 6:30, (he was texting us from the road), and it was 6:20, so we stood at the hostess station for 10 minutes because the bar was too crowded. Not all the beers listed on the table handout were available and only one of us liked what we ordered so I won't go back."

  • "Food not as good as 3 previous visits. Soup was watery, sauce on jambalaya was unappetizing- goopy, gooey green sauce consistency as if it had been sitting around a while. Probably won't be back."

  • "This was our first time at Southern Cross Kitchen. We love southern food, so we were intrigued to see if it would compare with what is served below the Mason-Dixon line. Our food was delicious. The braised short ribs were especially tender and flavorful! The one thing we were missing was some big old biscuits or some cornbread to nosh while we were waiting for our entrees. We'll definitely be back to sample more of the menu. Well done."

  • "Went with another couple. 4 appetizers, 3 different meals. Cornbread was dry and served room temp when should have been served warm. Beet and Blue cheese salad has maybe two chunks of blue cheese. Seafood stew was served with bad mussels. Not even edible. The waiter didn't apologize, but came back 5 mins later and said "dessert is on us." We ordered two (2) desserts and they charged us for one stating he said only one dessert - even though all 4 of us heard "dessert is on us." I had the fried chicken which, incredibly, was completely and absolutely tasteless. Didn't even think that was possible. Overall, don't recommend."

  • "The food preparation was unusual. The halibut main course was overwhelmed by too much balsamic vinegarette when a drizzle would have been more complementary to an otherwise flavorful dish. Our other entree (mini filet) was fatty and overcooked (asked for rare). No hurry to return."

  • "I have eaten at Southern Cross Kitchen on three different occasions. All three times it was really great. I had brunch with 18 people the first time - despite there being no record of our reservation that I confirmed a few weeks before and made a few months earlier - we were nicely accommodated and their screw up was quickly remedied. The second and third time I ate there was for dinner - with another couple and then with my two friends. The staff has always been friendly and they have been responsive to any need. The food has been so good - the grits are absolutely amazing. The atmosphere is comfortable and fun with a lively environment. It definitely gets 5 stars from me, my husband, family and friends!!!"
