Southend Brewery & Smokehouse has been rated the #1 Microbrewery in the South, and this is manifested in the beautiful glass encased "brewhouse" in the center of the building. We also feature Charleston's only indoor glass elevator, which you can take to the 3rd floor bar for darts and billiards, or the 2nd floor banquet hall, perfect for your Charleston event. The Brewery frequently hosts reunions, receptions, wedding rehearsal dinners and birthdays complete with a variety of menus and catering to suit the occasion.

I decided to go with southend brewery and they did not disappoint! I had the beef brisket and one of my friends had the salmon, both were delicious! Everyone was pleased even the picky eaters. The prices are also very reasonable. I would definitely return."

  • "The family went on busy evening after a long drive into Charleston. Everything was perfectly pleasant and good - nothing great. BBQ shrimp app would have been better if not breaded and fried. Boy's steak was solid. Girl's salmon was good. My BBQ platter was decent - ribs were fair; brisket was ok; pulled pork was best. Waitress wanted to get out because she didn't even offer dessert but just brought the check after cleaning our plates. Probably many better options but also worse."

  • "We were on a family vacation and had driven into Charleston for the day. We wanted to have dinner somewhere low-key and teen-friendly. I had been here before on a previous trip and enjoyed the food and the atmosphere seemed right for teenagers, as well. Our server did a great job and the food was all very good. My husband said that the bbq platter was one of the best he had ever had. Southend is a solid choice for families and a great place to have a drink later in the evening. Highly recommended."

  • "The atmosphere is that of a large, commercial bar which fits the downtown location. If you're into specialty brews, you will enjoy the variety offered here. They're attempting to offer a high end cuisine to keep up with the higher end restaurants in the area. However, they fall tremendously short...their expertise is definitely beer. "

  • "My fiancee was returning home (Savannah, GA) from her bridal shower (in MI) and her flight was getting in during early evening. I set up the reservation and added in the special comments section to have a split of champagne and a glass of bourbon ready for us when we arrived. It turned out there was a flight delay so I phoned ahead and they mentioned they would hold off on the drinks for us (in case we were late) so they wouldn't get warm. We were greeted and shown to our table upon arrival - drinks icy cold and ready to go. Dani (sp?), our server, was great during the whole evening. Overall a great experience and we'll be back then next time we're in Charleston. "

We try to make it to the Southend Brewery at least once each visit (often more), and we have never been disappointed. They have a varied menu with great food, and the service has always been terrific. If you enjoy a relaxed, casual dining experience, then this is the place to go downtown."

But for the money spent, I feel like we could have had something remarkable. Great for a bar-food appetite with a lower budget than most of the other restaurants around, tho...so not a bad pick. Just know what you're picking it for."

  • "We took a culinary tour of Charleston and Southend Brewery was one of the stops. As a result of that experience we decided to experience a full dinner there. The beer is very good and 2 of my companions bought some growlers to bring home as presents. The fried green tomatoes are beyond excellent and were the best we had in Charleston by far. Staff is great and the noise level is good."

  • "Go in with low expectations and you won't be disappointed. Food was mediocre at best, dry and tasteless. The craft beers weren't much better, lacking flavor and balance. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for a good meal. With all the good restaurants available in Charleston, there is no reason that you should waste your time or money here. That fact that at 4pm there were available reservations for four at 6pm on a Saturday, should have been a huge red flag."

  • "We showed up about five minutes early for our reservation and understandably the table was not ready. We waited at the bar and they sent us a text to inform us that our table was ready about ten to fifteen minutes after our reservation time. After being seated our server did an excellent job but the dish I wanted was some butternut squash ravioli and the server informed me that they had run out of the ravioli. I ended up getting the smokehouse plate and it was delicious, but I really would have liked to try the ravioli."

  • "We went to Southend due to its proximity to our hotel, caddy-corner across the street. Being in Charleston we definitely wanted to try some local BBQ. While our preferred BBQ is a shack in the country smoking the meat right out front, this city-center venue was a great alternative. From the moment we arrived in town we could smell the hickory pouring out of the restaurant. We shared the “Combo Platter” which had huge portion of pulled pork, ribs, & brisket with 2 sides. I enjoyed a pint of their brown ale beer, which was full-bodied to go with BBQ without being too filling. We would visit for drinks or dinner again. This place was really hopping on Saturday, but was much quieter on the Monday night that we visited."

  • "We ordered an appetizer of the fried green tomatoes and they were very bland not a lot of flavor. We also had the wedge salad which was very good proportion properly. I ordered the smokehouse platter. Beef brisket was very good the ribs were tough and the pulled pork had a strange taste. The platter also came with mac & cheese and the mac & cheese was good, but bland and not a lot of flavor. My wife had the beef brisket dinner, again the beef brisket was good but hers had a lot of fat. She also had the mac & cheese and said it was flavorless. Her dinner came with green beans that were very good. All in all I would not eat at this restaurant again with all the fabulous restaurants to eat at downtown I would pick somewhere."

  • "I love trying new microbreweries and BBQ, which is a hit or miss experience. Overall I would say food and beer were okay, but too many other options in Charleston to justify returning here. My fiancé doesn't eat beef or pork, but they had BBQ chicken so she ordered that. Our waiter returns and informs us they are out of chicken. This was at 5:00 pm on a Saturday night with a huge exposition in town and you're out of chicken? Pizza options looked pretty good, but didn't try them. Got the beer sampler and thought 2 of their beers were solid and didn't care for the rest, but beer preferences are of course personal preference. I'll probably stick with a seafood restaurant next time I return to Charleston."

  • "We picked the Southend Brewery and Smokehouse because we had never been there before. We had reservations for 745 but were not seated until almost 830. The restaurant was cold as the place was very busy and and had a lot of traffic at the front door where we were waiting for seating. The menu was limited, but had a good selection of beer and wine at reasonable prices. We selected a diner from the restaurant week menu which was well prepared, but due to the large amount of business we did not get our first choice for desert. The server had a great personality which made our dining experience really good. I would recommend it for a night out after being downtown for the day but would not use it for romantic or special occasions."

  • "I went to Southend Brewery during Charleston's restaurant week specifically because I could get good beer and a good deal on a delicious dinner. After arriving a bit early for my reservation, I still had to wait over an hour for a table. The hostess tried hard, but apparently the manager closed the third floor for a party - during restaurant week and the night after the Charleston Marathon - so the place was crowded. The food and beer were very good (try the shrimp and grits), and the atmosphere was nice. But my whole experience was soured by having to wait for so long. This place is probably much better on a late spring night when the doors are open to East Bay Street."

  • "Went to Southend on a little date night during restaurant week here in Charleston. From the moment we walked in the door the service was incredible. No problem with our reservation being booked and the wait staff was very attentive and polite. The appetizer I ordered was the bbq egg rolls which were very good, crispy outside, pork was nicely cook and the house sweet bbq sauce was the perfect touch. The briscuit for my main course was a delight, paired with mashed sweet potatoes and green beans made for a very enjoyable meal. Lastly and my favorite part was the bourbon carmel cheesecake. You could taste the bourbon but it was not too overpowering to shadow the taste of the cheesecake. I highly recommend it."
