  • "I met my friend for lunch over there. it was the first time at this restaurant and I didn't know what to expect so We both were pleasantly surprised. Our food was great and the whole atmosphere somehow made us think we're on vacation in a great city enjoying our little break. "

  • "I don't know whether the point of this place is to fleece out-of-towners in the hotel or to cater to people who are used to bland food. Nothing we ate had much flavor except for the cheese plate which, while the selection was unadventurous, wasn't bad. SWK was a huge disappointment. Our server was very nice, though."

  • "We were meeting a friend in Chicago, and had limited time to be with her. Didn't want to spend it waiting in line to be seated, so a friend recommended this place. Turns out, they were not crowded on the Sunday morning we went there, but it was a good feeling to know that if it WAS, we'd be seated right away. Food was great, and conversation was easy because the place was not loud."

  • "South Water Kitchen has surprisingly good food. The duck pirogi was delightful, but didn't care much for the duck jerky. The bread pudding is a favorite. Although they weren't incredibly busy, service was fair at best. She was attentive in the beginning but tapered off. I will eat here again."

  • "Had an early dinner here with an old friend. We both liked the ambience and convenient location. Service was very friendly and attentive. Especially appreciated the selection of sophisticated and refreshing non-alcoholic "mocktails". Who knew that cucumber and cherry syrup could be combined successfully? We limited ourselves to entrees, and my delicious pappardelle was packed with tender lamb. Conversation was easy, although the noise level was picking up when we left. Walking down the street afterwards, we were overtaken by our server, who sprinted after us to return a credit card. Thanks!"

  • "Dined here with my husband and daughter. The gluten free menu had many options and they also were very helpful in selecting items to avoid my food sensitivities. The food was good. My husband didn't care for the appetizer he ordered and was not charged for it. Everything else was very tasty."

  • "For years, this restaurant was a favorite "go to" location for us in Chicago. That is no longer the case. The food was OK, but not memorable. The wait staff was efficient yet impersonal. The tables were way too close to one another, It's impossible to have a private dining experience with the next table less than 18 inches away. The personality of this place has changed for the worse. With so many other top-notch choices in the city, we won't be back."

  • "Met my daughter for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful food, attentive service, and laid back atmosphere. We had a late lunch; but the food was fabulous, and the portion sizes extremely generous. I had the pulled pork which was smokey, tender, and flavorful. My daughter had the 8oz burger with white cheddar cheese and requested argula and pickeled onions, as well as the usual toppings. The food was outstanding and worthy of another visit. Our waiter was just wonderful and knowledgeable about the menu items, as well as having a joyful spirit which was evident in his great service. We both had boxes of food to enjoy later."

I had the PB&J (Pear, brie and jam) and it was good, but very heavy on the jam, which made it excessively sweet. The sweet potato fries were done perfectly though."

  • "South Water Kitchen was a very pleasent experience. Old Pub style environment, but the Food is very tasty and modern, three of us had the Rabbit Sausage and it was delicious. Caesar Salads with with some "bite" and a really original version of Cornbread Donuts with Chili as an appetizer............Wow, it was sooooo good! Our Waiter was engaging, timely and energetic! All good, and would highly recommend to others!! Thanks for the very good experience dining out!"

  • "We made a reservation, having never seen this place before, but figuring that every restaurant anywhere near the "dyeing of the Chicago River" was going to be packed. This proved to have been a great idea, because we walked right in and were seated immediately. We were given our choice of seating -- a booth in the lower level, or a table with a view of the street. We chose the latter, as we were enjoying watching the crazy attire of the St. Patrick's Day crowds. The food was excellent. I had a Reuben and my son had buttermilk pancakes and bacon. Despite the fact that the place was packed, it was not terribly noisy. Our wait staff never made us feel rushed. We'll make this place an annual tradition!"

  • "Dined here after a concert at the Chicago. Had made a reservation based on a friends recommendation, We couldn't have been happier with our decision. Warm, friendly staff, outstanding service and outstanding food and wine menu. The ten year old with us was given a children's menu with several child appropriate choices. We will be returning to South Water often."

  • "We made reservations for a Sunday after noon in early March before attending away at the Goodman theater. The restaurant was not overly crowded . We were greeted with genuine smiles and seated right away. Our server was very pleasant and answered all our questions. We had the pancakes and the huevos ranchero and a bowl of the tomato bisque. The food arrived fairly quickly, it was tasty...my only complaint is that the food was cold. Aside from that it is a nice lace you can go enjoy cocktails hold a conversation with out having to shot. I would go back and try their endless mimosas."

The server was patient and attentive but allowed us to attend to business. I did not feel rushed or pressured to finish our meeting. My choice provided to be the perfect spot for a business lunch. I could not have asked for a better experience. I will certainly go to SWK again."

  • "We had a group of 10 that gathered before a film screening around the corner. We arrived early and left by 6:45. The staff was great, the food awesome. Because it was so early, some of our guests had dinner, some only appetizers; the staff was flexible and very friendly, even when each couple had separate checks. They gave us a semi-private room - it was a bit noisy but the fact that we had our own mingling space trumped the noise. Love South Water Kitchen!"

  • "I’d only been to South Water Kitchen once before but this experience was more memorable than the first. Our server, Ellen, was excellent, she was attentive and respectful and very pleasant. The food was wonderful, especially the salmon over black rice. Delicious! And while we almost didn’t get dessert I’m glad we did. The german chocolate (more muffin than cake) was warm, tasty and a perfect end to a very good meal. The only downside was a less than satisfying beet salad but the server and the manager were gracious in taking it off our bill. That salad needs to be reimagined. Otherwise, this was a very good pre-theater dining experience. I hope others discover this place, it’s worth it."

  • "I went to South Water Kitchen about a month ago and had a stellar experience... but this time the whole lunch was "off". The service was disappointing, the flatbread was cold, oily and congealed, the sandwiches were subpar, and the bill was about $25 more than expected (b/c of a surprise $27 charge for the "lunch sandwich special"). All together, very disappointing. Beware of the specials - ask what the price is...."

  • "Go to this place on a Monday - half off bottles of wine! This makes it perfect for happy hour. The initial price of the bottles is a little high, but the list is pretty extensive for the area. The seating is great at South Water. The chairs are oversized and you feel like you're in a very nice place. Only downside is the service can be spotty. Sometimes I have great service but sometimes the waiter will disappear for 20+ minutes and ignore your table even when you make eye contact. The bus service is always impeccable."

  • "Our food was good, but the service was not. We were immediately offered coffee and juice which was good, but a refill for coffee had to be asked for from a server on the fly. My dining partner asked for her sauce to be on the side of her eggs, but it came on top. I feel that the server should have spotted this and corrected it before bringing it to the table. He did not even acknowledge that a mistake had been made and never came back to check."

As COT subscribers, we've been looking for a quiet restaurant with gracious dining for several years. SWK fit our needs perfectly. Their prix-fixe menu offered outstanding choices; the wine-by-the-glass list was good and the pour, generous; the service was efficient without being intrusive; and we could converse without shouting. We'll definitely be going back again."

  • "We were going to the theatre for the 7:30 performance of Phantom of The Opera and thinking dinner reservations for 5:30 would give us plenty of time.... wrong....the time in between courses was inexcusable. It was a little after 7pm and we still had not gotten our dessert. The restaurant was not crowded so I do not know what the problem was. Bad experience, won't go back. Food was just ok."

  • "Went here before seeing a show at the Goodman--and just found out that you get 20% off the day of a show. Lots of options for different sized meals-I had the short rib flatbread which was amazing. Great wine options too, although its hard to find a glass under $12 or a bottle under $50."

  • "My husband and I say just average. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable but not noticeably exceptional. There were 4 of us so we ordered 2 apps one of which our waiter forgot to put in. He corrected this as soon as we told him but didnt see him for 10 min. after we received the first app. My husband ordered his steak medium but received med. rare. Flavor was okay and meat was chewy. (AndI love rare steak). My scallops were good and cooked properly. I asked my friends what they thought and they agreed " just average". For an evening downtown after a show we most likely wont pick this place again. We wanted Wow! and it missed."
