A word from South End
The raw talent, experience, and passion of two young people is the foundation for South End, a neighborhood restaurant and gathering place in the charming town of New Canaan. Chef/Owner Nick Martschenko and General Manager Michelle Cooper bring seasonal comfort food and inspired libations together with an atmosphere that is casual, familiar, and befitting of a small urbane town.

The design combines the old with the new. Rustic hardware elements are set against reclaimed barn wood paneling, and light fixtures are antique in design, while utilizing a more contemporary flare. Beige Italian linen drapes are complimented by contrasting black tufted linen upholstered banquette seating. Oversized color prints of a misty countryside and farm animals are a nod to Chef’s sustainable food practices.

Had a celebratory dinner there last week; as always, South End's chef did not disappoint. Appetizers of crispy head on prawns, fried baby artichokes and risotto balls were all perfect. Entrees of steak frittes and roasted chicken were as heavenly as ever. The stand out for this night though was the burrata. If you go, get this. You won't be sorry.

South End isn't cheap, but as far as restaurants (in New Canaan) go it has an intriguing menu, and the ability to eat tapas-style or more traditional. The server we had was very comfortable dishing out the foodie-type lingo, and the dishes mostly lived up to the verbiage. Maybe a bit more pretentious than it needs (ought?) to be, but not in a way that would prevent me from going back. I guess what I'm saying is the price somewhat outmatches the delivery, but it's close enough for me.

On the heels of a recent New York Times review my girlfriends and I added South End to our "Must Try" list, and they didn't disappoint. We were greeted warmly by both the host and manager and swiftly taken to our table. Our server, Chris, was courteous and knowledgable, guiding us through both the menu and wine list. He made several suggestions, finding us the perfect wine and even arranged for an off menu appetizer portion of the Caramelized Scallops for my guest. Overall the food quality easily matches that of many famed Manhattan eateries and the service was attentive, but not pretentious. South End is a very welcome addition to Fairfield County and we look forward to our next visit! Both outstanding cuisine and service.

The menu offers a nice variety of interesting dishes. Food was exceptional: a special chilled spring pea soup with crabmeat and avocado was outstanding, as were the flavorful risotto balls from the regular menu; halibut and monkfish entrees were prepared perfectly, with fresh accompaniments; sorbets and ricotta donuts were delicious. Diverse wine and beer selection. Service was friendly and professional. The room is high-ceilinged and open with an upscale tavern feel. Our only gripes: a very loud table next to us--which can happen anywhere, although there is nothing to dampen noise levels at South End; and the prices, which are high--perhaps not for New Canaan, but certainly for a place which otherwise exudes a casual, neighborhood vibe.

I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT SOUTH END IF IT WEREN'T FOR MY SNOOPING AROUND ON OPEN TABLE. WE HAD SUCH AN ENJOYABLE DINNER AT SOUTH END. THIS DINNER COULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST I HAVE HAD IN THIS CHARMING TOWN. THE QUALITY OF THE INGREDIENTS AND THE STRAIGHTFORWARD, YET CREATIVE, WAY OF PREPARING OUR MEALS COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER.IT WAS DIFFICULT TO MAKE CHOICES GIVEN THIS FASCINATING OUR SERVER WAS AMIABLE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE. THE DESSERT CHEF MUST BE A GENIUS. FOUR OF US ORDERED DESSERT, UNHEARD OF IN THIS CROWD, AND EVERYONE WAS BEYOND HAPPY. PRICE-WISE, THIS IS NOT A RESTAURANT I WOULD FALL INTO WITHOUT THINKING BECAUSE IT IS EXPENSIVE. OUR DINNER, INCLUDING GRATUITY AND DRINKS FOR THREE, CAME TO $70 PER PERSON AND WORTH IT.

Have eaten at South End perhaps 30 times or so. Overall food quality is very good. Recent experiences have seen the service standards slip. The turnover in the waitstaff appears to be high. Had to get my own drinks at the bar after i was left unattended for five minutes or so after initial seating. The bar area is nicely social but understaffed as the barkeep makes drinks for the general audience as well. This results in long delivery times for beverages. Noise levels are high but acceptable. Food is pricey -- an extra $20 will get you can get a great dinner at elm down the street with impeccable service.

We have been to South End twice now and we are very impressed with the stylish interior and friendly service. The salads ( Chop chop and wedge) are tasty and the chop chop is almost too large. We both enjoyed the tasty pork saltimbocca. As new residents in New Canaan, we are pleased to have found the "In Spot". We will be regulars.

Packed house on a recent Sat. night. Fun to see big parties, tables for two, groups with children, diner in wheelchair - all having fun and graciously accomodated. This restaurant with easy parkng in New Canaan is a treasure. Only downside - things got so busy that it took much longer than normal to get check & settle up. Should've been out of there 30 mins. sooner.

I like going to South End as it has a great bar with lots of comfortable seating. The one downside in my opinion is that they need to change the menu as I believe it has been the same since the restaurant opened. If it was seasonal, I think I would go more often! It can also get quite loud with a full bar and difficult to hear if you are sitting at a table trying to have a "romantic" dinner. All said and done, my meal was good and we had a nice time.

Second time we have been... Both times with a group of 6 or more. Service is great, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The food was off the charts. We split several special appetizers including fried risotto balls and pig trotter terrine - both were outstanding as we're the salads and cheese selection. I had the duck special, others had pasta bolognese, steak and nonna's meatballs, everything was great. Their special desert, a toffee pudding with almond brittle was amazing ( and I'm not a desert person). Would definitely go again and would recommend this place very highly to anyone.

This is really a 4.5 star review. We had an earliesh reservation on a Wednesday evening. We arrived a few minutes early and were promptly seated. The house already had several tables dining, and it would fill up much more as the evening progressed. Our party of four was universally impressed with the food, the wine, the ambiance. We had a leisurely meal over great conversation that lasted over two hours. The kitchen may have been a little on the slow side, but the preparations were spot on and we never felt rushed (one of my pet peeves). The grilled octopus small plate and the scallop entree were particular highlights. The best meal of 2014 (so far)!

Have had mixed experiences there mainly on weekend nights and even Thursdays. it can be extremely crowded and loud, fun scene but sometimes in that setting, it's more about the fun than the food. Our family has really liked this restaurant for the food. Unfortunately, the last two visits we have had such horrible service that I am afraid the food does not make up for it. The first time this happened I made mention of it to the staff and the manager chased us down in the parking lot to apologize. This was admirable, and so we thought after a few weeks we would try again. Surprisingly, this time the service was so bad we never even got to order dessert. We asked for the bill after waiting for 20 minutes for our dishes to be cleared and another 15 minutes before anyone came to see if we would like anything else. What a shame the lack of service completely overshadows the food.

We dined on a relatively quiet Sunday evening and were very pleasantly surprised by the lovely decor, attentive service and delicious food. An appetizer of thinly sliced lean Serrano ham and manchego cheese was nicely presented with a small serving of spicy marinated quince. The main course of hangar steak was cooked perfectly, lean and sliced, with a light sauce, small side of arugula salad and fries (love that the size of the fries was not very guilt inducing!). Other main courses were tagliatele bolognese (very good) and an off the menu hamburger with cheese and bacon, served with the same small crock of fries. The least expensive glass of cabernet on the broad spectrum wine list was a perfect accompaniment.

The menu has some great permanent dishes, and the chef is constantly adding new dishes with the seasons and his whim. The tagliatelle bolognese was divine, the cassoulet was rustic and warming - perfect on a winter's night.

Five of us went there for dinner - four adults and a child. The special for the night was spaghetti & meatballs. It was good, but the portion was small for the price. One of the party had asked about adding chicken or salmon to a salad and were told that would turn a $13 salad into a $31 salad - a little pricey! All in all, the food was good (not great), portions small for the price.
