A word from South End
The raw talent, experience, and passion of two young people is the foundation for South End, a neighborhood restaurant and gathering place in the charming town of New Canaan. Chef/Owner Nick Martschenko and General Manager Michelle Cooper bring seasonal comfort food and inspired libations together with an atmosphere that is casual, familiar, and befitting of a small urbane town.

The design combines the old with the new. Rustic hardware elements are set against reclaimed barn wood paneling, and light fixtures are antique in design, while utilizing a more contemporary flare. Beige Italian linen drapes are complimented by contrasting black tufted linen upholstered banquette seating. Oversized color prints of a misty countryside and farm animals are a nod to Chef’s sustainable food practices.

We like South End for brunch (may like it for other meals, just haven't tried yet) having returned a half dozen times. Our favorite South End breakfast is hard to resist, but when we have ventured farther into the menu, e.g. excellent fish tacos, we have been equally pleased. Friendly staff rounds out the experience and its good value to boot.

Every corner of this menu has a neat quirk to it - a special ingredient you wouldn't normally think of; a surprising combination; or a high quality locally- sourced accent to the plate. Go to South End if you're tired of the same old restaurant food. It's a very welcome diversion - but not so much that it's "trying too hard" or just plain weird. The offerings are mature and fun at the same time.

Love South End and have been going since it opened. The last two visits were disappointing. In this visit, the service which is ordinarily excellent, was inattentive, slow, and disengaged. Food was good but not as good as usual. Fried artichokes were overcooked. Hoping things home back to the way they were before.

Had a nice dinner recently. Enjoyed outdoor seating( nicely done given it's really former parking spaces). Oysters were briny, mango sauce watery. Dry rubbed duck sounded great, but disappointed at lack of flavor. 3 of us ordered it at different degrees of done and all came out looking identical. Desserts were nice. Seems to be still working out menu kinks, and could use a better beer offering including craft selections. I still look forward to this good restaurant becoming great one day.

We had been talking about how hard it has been to find a restaurant that encapsulates all of our tastes in a casually contemporary way it was our second visit to South End.Service was attentive. It is refreshing to find a restaurant that recognizes the need to clear only when everyone is finished!Very rare these days and it makes a huge difference enabling everyone to enjoy their meal without feeling rushed. Most important of course is the food.We had a taste across the board, with charcuterie, oysters, and tuna for appetizers and duck, chicken pork and Steak frite for dinner.Everything was well prepared and delicious. My only suggestion,is to keep all entres less than $30.00as the price point rises above$30we hesitate and pick something else.

Our intent was a leisurely birthday lunch for a young grandmother with her family. A big plus was seating at a corner table oversized for our party which easily accommodated the high chair and baby toys. The service crew delivered beautifully by being very attentive yet facilitating our desired relaxed pace of the occasion. The food was excellently prepared and presented. The Scottish Salmon with asparagus and Fish Tacos were hits. The delivery of the birthday cake was well orchestrated.

We all enjoyed our meals and were able to have good conversation in one of the booths. It wasn't too crowded for 6:30 on a Wednesday night but was filling up by the time we left at 8. The space is very attractive, and the staff was very attentive. My husband loved the beer choices. The only thing that would keep me from becoming a regular would be the New Canaan prices.

We loved the décor of the place when we first walked in. Then the food came out and all I can say is that the food was amazing. It was one of the best meals that I have had in a long time. I highly recommend this place. The Spicy Tuna Poke appetizer was out of this world. For dinner we ordered the Montauk Skate Wing and the Grilled Marinated Swordfish. Both dinners were fresh and delicious. I can't wait to go back. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive to detail.

Our party of four made a reservation for Sunday night, arrived on time and were seated promptly - the restaurant was nearly empty. Two of our guests had the soft shell crab and were pleased with the presentation and quality. I ordered the calamari over pasta and could not have been more disappointed. Very few calamari were hiding in a big pile of fat noodles and for what was served - the price is totally unjustified for a plate of 90% spaghetti. The price for wine by the glass is the highest I have seen in town.

This was our second time at South End. We were there for lunch a couple of weeks ago and everything was excellent. We came back with another couple for dinner and the reviews of the meal were mixed. Two of us had the bolognese and both agreed that while the pasta was fresh, the meat lacked any zest and the entire dish seemed to be covered in oil making it somewhat tasteless, heavy, and greasy. Others had the lamb and halibut and were very satisfied with the preparation of their meals. Service was appropriately attentive. SE was not that busy on a Tuesday night, and the noise level was fine for dinner conversation. We like the atmosphere that brings a casual but sophisticated vibe to New Canaan.

South End will not be one of our 'go to' restaurants. We had reservations and the table wasn't ready when we arrived. The hostess wasn't concerned. We had to ask to order drinks because no server ever came to our table. When the drinks came, we decided to order our meal thinking we may never see our server again. Well, we had to again ask where our food was because 40 minutes had gone by! Food was mediocre. The noise level was unbearable. Never going back.

Was nervous about service given earlier posts but was pleasantly surprised. Our waiter was terrific and I'm a tough critic. Orders were taken without much wait, food was proper wait time. Attentive at pouring wine. The spicy tuna appetizer was very good - perfect. We both had soft shell crab - done perfectly, just a hint of curry. The smore dessert was just the right touch. Overall well done. Looking forward to returning.

This is a wonderful restaurant! Tables are set far enough apart so you can talk and not feel people are on top of you. The food in delicious. They have an option of "small plates" and "large plates" so everyone can choose the type and size of meal they want. We loved the Monk Fish and Salmon. Steak was also a good choice. But you really can't go wrong with any choice. Service is attentive and waiters are knowledgeable.

Had a celebratory dinner there last week; as always, South End's chef did not disappoint. Appetizers of crispy head on prawns, fried baby artichokes and risotto balls were all perfect. Entrees of steak frittes and roasted chicken were as heavenly as ever. The stand out for this night though was the burrata. If you go, get this. You won't be sorry.

South End isn't cheap, but as far as restaurants (in New Canaan) go it has an intriguing menu, and the ability to eat tapas-style or more traditional. The server we had was very comfortable dishing out the foodie-type lingo, and the dishes mostly lived up to the verbiage. Maybe a bit more pretentious than it needs (ought?) to be, but not in a way that would prevent me from going back. I guess what I'm saying is the price somewhat outmatches the delivery, but it's close enough for me.

On the heels of a recent New York Times review my girlfriends and I added South End to our "Must Try" list, and they didn't disappoint. We were greeted warmly by both the host and manager and swiftly taken to our table. Our server, Chris, was courteous and knowledgable, guiding us through both the menu and wine list. He made several suggestions, finding us the perfect wine and even arranged for an off menu appetizer portion of the Caramelized Scallops for my guest. Overall the food quality easily matches that of many famed Manhattan eateries and the service was attentive, but not pretentious. South End is a very welcome addition to Fairfield County and we look forward to our next visit! Both outstanding cuisine and service.

The menu offers a nice variety of interesting dishes. Food was exceptional: a special chilled spring pea soup with crabmeat and avocado was outstanding, as were the flavorful risotto balls from the regular menu; halibut and monkfish entrees were prepared perfectly, with fresh accompaniments; sorbets and ricotta donuts were delicious. Diverse wine and beer selection. Service was friendly and professional. The room is high-ceilinged and open with an upscale tavern feel. Our only gripes: a very loud table next to us--which can happen anywhere, although there is nothing to dampen noise levels at South End; and the prices, which are high--perhaps not for New Canaan, but certainly for a place which otherwise exudes a casual, neighborhood vibe.

Have eaten at South End perhaps 30 times or so. Overall food quality is very good. Recent experiences have seen the service standards slip. The turnover in the waitstaff appears to be high. Had to get my own drinks at the bar after i was left unattended for five minutes or so after initial seating. The bar area is nicely social but understaffed as the barkeep makes drinks for the general audience as well. This results in long delivery times for beverages. Noise levels are high but acceptable. Food is pricey -- an extra $20 will get you can get a great dinner at elm down the street with impeccable service.
