  • "I have started avoiding this place for coffee and breakfast due to the lines and the slightly entitled vibe of some of the clientele. I had never been for dinner and decided to give it a try since I live nearby. I was very pleasantly surprised! We sat downstairs by the fire place which was nice and cosy. The quality of the food was outstanding. We got beef cheeks, mussels and pork, All were cooked very well and had delicious flavors and seasonings. It far exceeded my expectations."

  • "I highly recommend South End Buttery Dinner: perfect -- not too heavy and over-spiced like so many of the south end places. The scallops were awesome, salad was delightful and the lobster mac 'n cheese can be a perfect main dish. Service was slow but very friendly - we sat upstairs in the bar area. I actually enjoyed that it was slow because we had time in between drinks and the salad to talk and catch up. I've been with larger groups and it was great. Brunch - crowded for a reason. It's popular on the weekends so book a reservation and you'll be all set. Coffee - In the front, there is a coffee shop that is also crowded on the weekends. Great coffee and large tea selection and lots of breakfast options."

  • "I cannot say enough good things about this experience! The food was to die for, I was part of a party of four and each of out meals were fantastic. It has to be the best breakfast I have had in a long time. It is such a quaint spot in Boston's south end, the main dining area is comprised of a few tables on the first floor and the remainder on the lower level. The spacing was tight but you didn't even mind because the mood and ambiance in the room was delightful. Making the reservation on Open Table was definitely a must, we went for brunch around 11 on a Sunday and the place with about 80% full with people coming and going as we ate. The restaurant also includes a bakery/coffee shop which I have been told the cupcakes are also divine."

  • "Food and service were great. The bakery out front was quaint We ate at a high top in the bat which was very comfortable and bright during the daylight. This was my second visit and would definitely go back"

  • "I always enjoy brunch at the Buttery. The food is always delicious and the service very friendly. The menu is full of healthy and organic items and the drinks are very creative."

  • "A very relaxing evening. You are not rushed, but the food--all excellent--comes out promptly. There's no beer on tap but the bottled choices are all good. There's a variety of seating. We will be back!"

  • "Crowded, close tables so that you're basically in the next person's conversation throughout your meal. Food was nothing to write home about, although tasty, I expected a more inventive menu. Service was slow and inattentive. This was my first time, so I would go back once more to see if this was just an off night and because I love the South End in general for ambiance."

  • "I went to brunch on a Saturday, midday, with 3 girlfriends, and we had an amazing time. It's such a cute spot, great decorations, and the food was amazing!!"

  • "Every single time I come here the food is excellent. The brunch is always fantastic. I bring anyone who comes To boston here - it's a must!"

  • "Food was very good, but thought it was too noisy in the downstairs room when filled with people. The noise was distracting and hard to hear the person across from me. (And I was facing the wall)."

  • "Overall the food was tasty from beginning to end. However this is a bakery, so the desserts are definitely a highlight! (sweet potato blondies sound so weird but are so delicious.) The atmosphere is very intimate and romantic (I thought it was cosy, but some might consider it cramped.) Overall a pleasant way to spend a cold saturday night."

  • "The food is decent (fresh, pleasant-tasting), but nothing exceptional, particularly not for the price. There are definitely better brunch options. The seating is a bit crowded and the coffee was not very good."

  • "This was perhaps the best brunch I've ever had. I wish I could eat here everyday. The french toast was unbelievable and the ham and manchego eggs benedict on a homemade biscuit was absolutely delicious. We also started with a fabulous chocolate chip scone. Really incredible food."

  • "I do like the buttery - it's a solid and reliable choice, and I highly recommend their breakfast sandwich if you're passing through. There was some confusion with our orders, but everyone was very friendly despite how incredibly busy it was. It took us a long time to find parking, but we were seated immediately when our party was complete."

  • "Place is little tight but they made it work .. we got a very good vibe .. Service and food was excellent and pretty fast compare to amount of rush. Neighborhood is great and I would def recommend if you are on date or with group of friends. Book in advance as they have online reservation which worked out good for us to avoid waiting"

  • "Last Saturday I had reservations for 8 at the Buttery in the South End at 8:30pm. We showed up at 8:15 to find they had created a dining area upstairs next to the take-out cases they use for breakfast and lunch. We were the only table and there was no ambiance or warmth associated with the lovely fire-lit downstairs dining area. We asked to sit downstairs nicely or told them if it was a problem, we would probably go somewhere else. They told us they could accommodate us in 30 minutes and to have a drink in the bar. We did not sit until 95 minutes later and in retrospect should have gone elsewhere. My warning to those going to the Buttery in the future, make sure you request downstairs seating or else you might be in for a bad surprise!"

  • "Every time my fiancé and I have made reservations here (three times in the last two weeks) we can't wait to go back and are honestly upset when our food that we ordered is consumed. Nikki the hostess is great and every waiter/waitress we have had has been great. There is also nothing worse then waiting 30-40 minutes for your mean, South End Buttery had magicians in the kitchen because I swear we order, have a three minute conversation, and wala our food is on the table (it could also just be that our reservations are always at 10). I could go on and on and on but I will end it with three words. GO EAT HERE!"

  • "The food was amazing! I highly recommend the pastry basket. Also, the staff was wonderful and very accommodating such that they created a brunch cocktail for me- a passion fruit Bellini- very refreshing."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "While I love the aesthetic of the downstairs room, the tables are squished very closely together and the noise level makes conversation extremely challenging. The food was good, but not spectacular, and the lack of any kind of bread product to accompany an egg entree seems absurd, forcing one to order the bread basket."

  • "Definitely the best pancakes in town, and one of the best brunch spots (open Saturday mornings too)."

  • "Although the food was good, my friend and I had brunch there this past Sunday (with a reservation) and were practically rushed to finish our meal and get out in 45 minutes. The waitress was rude, pushy and put the check down before asking if we wanted coffee or dessert. We ordered cocktails, entrees and spent over $100 for brunch and the whole time we knew they wanted us gone so they could seat a party of 6 and use our table - just horrible service."

  • "You can tell that this place is a favorite of locals in the South End and those that travel farther to get here. It is a wonderful little spot, but what it lacks in space, it makes up in food, character, and service."

  • "The South End Buttery should stick to pastries. This so called restaurant is the worst experience I've had in Boston so far, and that's saying a lot. The cookies and scones were good, but that's about it. The egg dishes are not good, which I just don't get. How can you mess up eggs?? The cutlery was dirty. The cocktails were terrible. We were cramped into a tiny space with one sole waiter/bartender to attend to all of the tables. He was nice enough, but clearly overwhelmed. At the end of the worst brunch I've ever had, I got a huge check. Never going back except for scones on the pastry shop side."

  • "Ate here with two friends at 5:30PM before going to a play at the Calderwood Center. Because it was Wednesday night, we were the only party in the cozy downstairs dining room, which was great. We were able to chat comfortably, and hear each other without having to raise our voices. The wait staff was attentive, but never hovering, popping into the room just as we needed something. Our bottle of malbec was quite good, and we all enjoyed the food. I had veggie burger with lovely parmesan fries, and the other two had salads. One friend ordered the mussels appetizer, which was lovely. The waitress suggested dipping the fries into the mussels broth, so we tried that - yum! We three shared a flourless chocolate cake - rich, yummy, just enough"

  • "Had an enjoyable Sunday brunch with friends at this restaurant. It was kid-friendly, as other reviewers have mentioned, which was important to us given that we had an infant in tow. Nice ambience for a casual but fun brunch. The menu consisted of brunch staples plus a few lunch options, and the food was good. overall The service could have been a little better. My friend ordered coffee that never arrived but later appeared on the bill. Our server wasn't around often enough for us to point out the absent coffee, and we would've liked a water refill here and there. The coffee was eventually removed from the bill to correct for the error, though I think my friend would've preferred to have her coffee."

  • "Delicious meal, excellent service. Like the varied menu. We had 3 different selections and it was all delicious. The room is cozy and lovely on a winter's eve. Wish the acoustics were better- it was noise and hard to hear people in our group."

  • "I was glad to see on the menu that gluten free pasta was available so I ordered the Fra Diablo. with in a few moments the waiter came back and said that they don't have any gluten free pasta and the burgers without the buns and the salmon were the only gluten free options. The salmon was good but not what I was in the mood for."

  • "The hostess was helpful--we arrived a little early and were seated before the rest of the party arrived. The bread basket we ordered was good--nothing special. The brunch entrees were delicious. The server never brought spoons to stir our coffee, but otherwise the service was very good. We were in the upstairs room with the bar, and it was pretty loud, but the overall experience was goo."

  • "I was let down based on previous reviews and will probably not be returning. We traveled in from out of town on a very snowy day, I called and asked push the reservation back by an hour but said if it couldn't be, I could just cancel, I didn't want to inconvenience any one, (after some hemming and hawing) they said that would be alright. They must have been short staffed because our waiter came over to us very infrequently. We asked for water a few times and were never checked in on how our meal was. Then at one point in the night we heard the waiter saying "yeah, that's the table that pushed their reservation back an hour." Finally, at the end of it all, our waiter came over to say that "no rush, but they needed the table back.""

  • "The food and service were excellent. The only negative was the 30 minute wait when we had a reservation. We sat the lower level which was cozy. Would definitely go again despite the wait."

  • "I've eaten here before, and have had a great experience so was looking forward to my return. The food met expectations, the ambiance did not. I was seated in the cafe section, which can't compare to the bar area or downstairs dining room. It felt like being seated in a closed coffee shop. The servers, while friendly and efficient, gave me the sense of "when are you leaving so I can finish my shift." Not a terrible time, but a disappointment overall. I should have (and if I return will next time) insist on being seated in the dining room or bar."

  • "My girlfriend and I had reservations for 11am on a Saturday, which we made weeks in advance. However, when we arrived we were told it was going to be a 30 minute wait for a table. We saw that there were seats open at the bar and told the hostess that we would just sit there instead of wait for a table. It turns out, the reason those tables were open in the bar area is because the service was lacking. The poor bartender had about 6 tables on top of all the people at the bar and the people ordering drinks through out the place, that he was trying to take care of. We only ever saw him doing any table services, so I don't know if waiters were downstairs or didn't show up. They seemed very short staffed. Food was great though."

  • "I had the best eggplant parmigiana that I've had in a restaurant. All parties loved the PEI mussels appetizer. One person chose it as a main course."

  • "This place is such a delicious gem that it is completely worth traveling into the city on a cold night! They have a lovely warm fireplace downstairs and the service is extremely pleasant. Our waitress was so sweet and accommodating when we brought our 1 year-old to join us for dinner. The food was lip-smacking good and there was a variety of drinks to choose from. We can't wait to return - perhaps for brunch next!"

  • "I've never been for brunch, but I suspect this is where the Buttery excels. Food, service, and ambiance for dinner were good, but nothing spectactular. I'd definitely go back, but no also not rushing to do so."

  • "South End Buttery was quite enjoyable for my wife and I plus three college aged dinner guests. The Chicken Parm was outstanding and the Hanger Steak looked fantastic. There seemed to be only one waiter downstairs so service was a little slow, but not unreasonably so."
