A word from South City Kitchen Midtown
Celebrating over 16 years as one of Atlanta's favorite restaurants, South City Kitchen Midtown specializes in contemporary Southern cuisine with a sophisticated twist. Combining the energy of Atlanta with the warmth of a Southern home, the restaurant is nestled in an updated, historic bungalow on the city's famous Crescent Avenue. Dine on local specialties such as shrimp and grits, buttermilk fried chicken, she-crab soup, fried green tomatoes and banana pudding while enjoying the view of our exhibition kitchen or the Atlanta skyline on one of the best patios in the city. This truly is dining the way the new South intended. (Please note, the restaurant is not handicap accessible.)Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This was our fouth visit to South City Kitchen as we find the food and service always delightful. We ordered the scallop appetizer and they were perfectly cooked, a slight crunch on the outside and very tender inside. This visit we tried the pork chop and the catfish. We did not make a mistake."

  • "We had a concert to attend so I notified OpenTable and we were seated right away. Tyler was our server and was very attentive. The Fried Green Tomato appetizer with tomato/basil sauce was delicious. My husband had the Tennessee Catfish and I had the Shrimp and Grits. Both were phenomenal! The only complaint we had was the noise level. We sat at a cute little table all to ourselves, but could not hear each other talk. It seems that there must not be an insulation in the walls to accommodate the people in the rooms. We were seated upstairs and it seemed that all the noise from downstairs filtered up to us along with all the noise on the second. Loved the food, but don't think we will be back unless we are seated outside to eat."

  • "Food is always good even if not the best I have ever had. Pearson Farm Peach salad was superb as was shrimp and red mule grits. Service was pleasant and efficient. Good wine list...not great but good."

  • "I have been to South City Kitchen numerous times and have been completely satisfied with the food the atmosphere and the staff. However this last time was outstanding The service seemed better than before, the food was superb and the portions were perfect, not too much and not too little. I did not leave the restaurant stuffed just extremely satisfied. From the pre-dinner drinks toO the main course, I along with my guests were completely content and ready to enjoy the concert at Symphony Hall. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone going to a play or concert at the Alliance Theater!!"

  • "This place has the best of everything-great location, great vibe, amazing food, outstanding service and delicious wines. it is a great place to take out of town business guests (ask to sit upstairs) or have a group dining experience. This staff treats everyone like a VIP."

  • "The restaurant was nice but very noisy. The food was okay. I had the catfish and my boyfriend had the fried chicken. Neither were seasoned very well. Our server, Aaron was great and very attentive. Dessert was excellent."

  • "Awesome Place....I've been there several times and it's consistant and amazing! Love the fried chicken, green fried tomatoes, etc. you can't go wrong here!"

  • "Thoroughly loved the crusty, moist, tender fried chicken atop the absolutely creamy, delicious mashed red skin potatoes, alongside the tangy, savory collards and hearing my husband comment over and over about his delicious chicken and malted waffles, after I ordered the homemade pimento cheese appetizer adjoined with fresh, homemade bread/butter pickles. Wonderful, memorable lunch!"

  • "From start to finish the restaurant was very accommodating. Within 2 hours of our Sat. night reservation Chris pulled some strings to allow us to seat 7 instead of 4 which was a great help to us. Server was attentive and knowledgeable, and despite the very loud surroundings we enjoyed ourselves. It was a bit cramped with people around the bar but we made do. The food was phenomenal. The main portions looked a bit small for the price but our small plates were excellent. Pork, crab and fried green tomato apps were delicious and the salads and scallops were very flavorful. The lobster mac was to die for, it was so creamy inside with a buttery crunchy crust. Definitely recommend, although parking is a hassle, especially with an event nearby."

  • "Six of us went here for lunch after an outing at The High. The restaurant had failed to review our reservation requests for seating and thus we were seated on the main level. When the hostess realized this they were very apologetic and went out of their way to be accommodating and responsive. There were few options for seating for 6 people and were we were seated it was so loud we could hardly hear ourselves talk. They moved us upstairs which improved the ability to have a conversation. The service was excellent, however the food was only adequate. I think the reputation exceeded our actual experience. In any event, it is not a place I would go out of my way for as none of us found it anything special."

  • "I had a great time there with my date for dinner. We ran a little bit late due to the traffic and were quickly sat at a table, that was nice. We sat downstairs and it was very loud, almost shouting across the table to speak with another, this wasn't the greatest spot for a first date. Food was great, as usual. Service was ok. Will come back because I love the food there"

  • "I dined with a client and we had a great table and great service. Everything was great: I had the shrimp and grits and my client had the pork chop, both were really good. Looking around at the other tables, the fried chicken was the overwhelming choice. Next Time!"

  • "This place is killer! Great food, service, all around superior. Definitely recommend this place for upscale down home cooking."

  • "Eclectic atmosphere, although very loud. Food was good, but my wife and I both felt that the signature fried chicken was a bit over done. Once we got our beverages, we did not get refills on our sweet tea or water."

  • "Second time we have gone to South City before going to performance at the Fox. Great food and service. Their fried green tomatoes and fried chicken is outstanding."

  • "We went here on Saturday night to celebrate my friend's birthday. Our server was extremely accommodating, and even offered us a complimentary dessert. I split a Caesar salad and the fried chicken with one of my friends. We also got an order of the mac n' cheese. As always, the food did not disappoint. We had a wonderful meal with a great bottle of wine. One of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta!"

  • "It has been 4+? years since our last visit to SCKM and the experience again was top shelf. There is a reason some restaurants have staying power and the fundamental detailed attention dedicated to food and service here continues to be benchmark."

  • "What a hidden gem. I'm so glad we found this place on yelp. Excellent food and service. The pork was amazing and the shrimp and grits were great. For desert banna pudding is the best."

  • "Went for early dinner after show @ FOX. Excellent food combined with excellent service made it a truly enjoyable experience. Try the shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes. The she crab soup was a great starter."

  • "This restaurant has been a favorite of mine for a long time. The She - Crab Soup, which all of the people in our party ordered, was absolutely delicious. I would like to say that our experience would be remembered because of the food, but what I will remember is the fact that my friends and I had to shout at each other all night to try to be heard."

  • "Everytime I am in atlanta i come to south city kitchen. The food is consistently delicious. The service is friendly and helpful. First timers must have the fried green tomatoes. The lemonade with vodka is refreshing and addictive. Oh and i cant forget the 2 corn muffins i consumed. Yum!!! Reservations are a must"

  • "Our waitress rushed us from start to finish. It's not like we walked in right before they closed: We got there 845, were seated at 900, and they didn't close until 1000. I didn't say anything because I was on a date. Also, it was the loudest restaurant I have ever been to. Luckily we got a table on the porch, which was great. But the inside, which was probably 90% of the seats, it sounded like people were screaming. They had to design the restaurant like this on purpose. Noise reducing methods have been around for decades. The food was good to great, but there are other restaurants on Atlanta that are as good or better and have a much more pleasant dining experience. Prices were reasonable for this tier of restaurant."

  • "we were a bit shocked at the bad attitude by the lady who seated us, but it was AMAZING after that. Our server, and her associates could not have been better. The food lived up to the hype. I would recommend to anyone."

  • "I have been here many times and love all of their food, especially the Shrimp and Grits and Buttermilk Fried Chicken. On this visit I tried the Catfish Reuben. It is a little messy to eat, but one of the best sandwiches I have had. The catfish had almost a soft shelled crab type light texture with a good crunch. The horseradish slaw with thousand island remoulade was a perfect compliment that did not overpower the mild catfish. The boisterous atmosphere is not conducive to a quiet personal conversation, but it is perfect for old friends/business associates hooking up for lunch."

  • "4 of us dined for Sunday brunch. Our group was a mix of carnivores and pescatarians. There was something to please everyone on the menu. Service and food were excellent. Parking is the only challenge. We parked in a pay lot off Crescent. Avoid the valet parking (they are independent and not related to the restaurant) they left a significant horizontal scratch on my car and refused to take responsibility. South City is consistently a great dining choice."

  • "Perhaps I should not expect more from "gourmet southern food". What can be done to transform fried chicken from a rural southern diner into gourmet status? Apparently, not much. South City Kitchen places their fried chicken on top of mashed potatoes and greens, a transition in placement that must elevate the lowly fried chicken to gourmet status. Unfortunately, rearrangement on the plate does not elevate the taste of the food. The chicken was moist, but bland, and not worth the gourmet price."

  • "The trip to South City Kitchen was good. This is my second time here, once for dinner and this time for lunch. The dinner selection was a little better than lunch but I still enjoye the food. It was cooked well and my party all enjoyed their food. Will be coming here again as I live 2 blocks away and can walk there. Thanks South City!"

  • "My girlfriend and I have lived in Atlanta for about a year now and are still getting around to all the little restaurant gems in the city. This is one of them. It was Sunday at noon when I walked in and I was a little surprised by the guest semi-formal attire at a table by the door. Luckily, it wasn't that way everywhere in the restaurant. We sat upstairs with an awesome view of the floor below. I love that this place feels like a house. My girlfriend ordered the chicken and waffles, a combination she has never had before, and she loved it. I had the crab eggs Benedict and loved it as well. I gave South City Kitchen Midtown five stars and they earned it."

  • "Love South City! We come here with out of town guests every time and everyone loves it! We will continue to come back again and again. The first time we ever came was for Easter Brunch and my husband got a flat tire. He was outside waiting for the truck so they put his meal under the heat so he didn't have a cold meal. After he had been out there for a bit the manager came over and said he would hate for him to have a meal that had been sitting under a heat lamp and brought him a fresh hot meal. We thought that was a rare find and we greatly appreciated it. We will be life long fans of South City because of their awesome customer service and even more amazing food!"

  • "Met a colleague there who had not previously been. Service was attentive as always, the the food was wonderful, again as expected. We both had a pleasant lunch. I like the homage to traditional southern food, but always with that something extra. My favorite of Midtown restaurants."

  • "We don't live in Atlanta, but have consistently for the past years when visiting or traveling through make a point to dine at South City Kitchen Midtown. If possible, this restaurant has even gotten better. From the moment we sat down our waiter was attentive and friendly. We of course, went with the waiters suggestions, (and a few of of own favorites) and had an awesome meal. The wine, food, and dessert were superb. I don't think you can ask for more from a restaurant, and South City Kitchen is a must for anyone living, visiting, or just passing through Atlanta."

  • "I was in a party of three and we all ordered different beverages, starters, and entrees. All were fantastic. On a whim I tried the Braised Beets Salad because, well honestly I couldn't imagine what the combination of ingredients would be like. VERY tasty, and this from some one who rarely eats beets. If as you read the menu, you can't decide what to order - ask your server or just close your eyes and point. There are many great options."

  • "Was very excited about going since this was highly rated on Trip Advisor - #4 in all Atlanta. We were a little disappointed by some of the food. It was okay -- not great. My husband ordered the famous fried chicken - he LOVED it. I ordered the duck - it was okay not great. We had the fried green tomatoes and chicken livers for appetizers. Both were just okay. The tomatoes needed more goat cheese - you could barely taste that they had any."

  • "We had two couples in our group, reserved our table through OpenTable, arrived at the restaurant and were taken right away to our table. We savored the Yalumba red & white blend- excellent. The portions of each course were absolutely perfect in size. Two starters were just right for two couples. Then we each ordered a dish and shared. Fried catfish, fried chicken and shrimp/grits were all truly outstanding. A wonderful dining experience!"
