A word from South City Kitchen Midtown
Celebrating over 16 years as one of Atlanta's favorite restaurants, South City Kitchen Midtown specializes in contemporary Southern cuisine with a sophisticated twist. Combining the energy of Atlanta with the warmth of a Southern home, the restaurant is nestled in an updated, historic bungalow on the city's famous Crescent Avenue. Dine on local specialties such as shrimp and grits, buttermilk fried chicken, she-crab soup, fried green tomatoes and banana pudding while enjoying the view of our exhibition kitchen or the Atlanta skyline on one of the best patios in the city. This truly is dining the way the new South intended. (Please note, the restaurant is not handicap accessible.)Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "South City Kitchen was recommended by a friend as a must do restaurant during our visit to Atlanta over the Easter holiday. We found they had a special Easter menu and we promptly made reservations. The meal was excellent. The she crab soup I had as an appetizer was excellent, as was all of the food we had. We will certainly go back on future visits."

  • "This was a business lunch, and we sat upstairs and it was too loud to talk. We ate at 12:30 PM, and not until after most of the lunch crowd left were we able to hear each other well. The food was decent, but it's not really my style."

  • "My mom and I ate here before heading to the Fox for a theatre performance. We were immediately seated and the server showed up quickly to take drink orders. Mom had the strawberry salad (she's a light eater) and I had the buttermilk fried chicken. Both items were beautifully composed, perfectly prepared, and quickly delivered. Service was smooth and attentive but not rushed or fussy. I would definitely return next time I'm in the area. "

  • "Love South City in many way. Service is always top notch, food is consistently good, but the place is starting to wear out. It could use an update. Our chairs all had cracks and the place is just dated. The food is always perfectly prepared and fantastic though. Never an issue."

  • "The food was amazing and the drinks even better. It is a bit pricey, so expect to spend a little and a lot if you are drinking. Sat on the patio which was also amazing. I definitely will be back soon."

  • "I made reservations on a Saturday night for a large group. They were flexible and willing to work with me. They put us in a smaller area that accomodated the group nicely and gave us a little privacy. The service was excellent!"

  • "I dont normally order a pork chop but the server talked me into it. Very very good chop. Wife had the trout and absolutely loved it. The skin was so crisp. Mussels and she crab soup were great to start with. Our server was knowledgable about the food an restaurant."

  • "Great service, nice table upstairs with excellent service. Expensive, but worth a visit! Yummy Food. I had the Caesar salad with grilled chicken, bu often get the southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes and swap the greens"

  • "Go for the food...fried green tomatoes....fried chicken....forget about your health for an evening! I read reviews and some said certain areas were quieter....NOT!!!"

  • "Food and experience very consistent. Always know you will have a good meal and good service. Inside is a bit noisy, but sitting out on the patio is lovely"

  • "South City is within walking distance to my job, I heard many good things about the food so I finally visited. The food was mediocre and a tab pricey. It wasn't very pricey but if I'm going to pay $30 for a pork chop it better be GREAT and it wasn't. Nice ambiance, we set on the patio, waitress was nice but food was just "okay.""

  • "Everything was delicious: cocktails, biscuits, soup, entree, dessert. Service was helpful and well informed, without feeling rushed or intrusive. Making a reservation for one wasn't a problem and I got a great table. Lighting was warm and low, making for an intimate feel. Looking forward to my next visit."

  • "Initially, I was thinking of trying a nontraditional ambience for a late afternoon dinner. Somehow I was overcome with the taste for breakfast food but not the typical 3-4 item meal. I searched for brunch locations and of the five that populated my search results first, South City Kitchen won me over with their description of the "shrimp & grits" featured on their menu. I was thoroughly pleases with the level of service and promptness of the meal's arrival to my table. Everyone was bright and upbeat from the host to the servers. The music in the background essentially lulled me into my happy place with tunes from Ray Charles to Tony Bennett. Amazing experience! Time and money well spent!"

  • "The food was great. Gourmet southern cuisine. The waiter was stiff and not very friendly. He needed a little more personality and should be warmer to the customers."

  • "I had made a reservation earlier in the week and at the last minute, I needed to add another person. At first, my request could not be accommodated but about an hour later, a young lady from the restaurant called me back and had worked something out. I was really impressed by that. The food is always good. This time, the fried chicken was just awesome."

  • "My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. I ordered the pork chop on the recommendation of our server, and she didn't steer me wrong. First of all, this chop is not your grandma's small, dry chop . This was as big and as thick as a sirloin steak. It was cooked to perfection, very tender and juicy, and the flavor was fabulous. My husband had the fried chicken, and it, too, was incredibly moist and flavorful. I loved their fried green tomatoes, stacked with goat cheese on an herbed tomato sauce. The only miss was the lobster mac and cheese, which was surprisingly watery and bland, and the flavor was not a good complement to the wonderful flavors of the pork chop. The music was too loud but didn't interrupt our conversation."

  • "I really appreciate that their chicken comes from a farm that treats the animals humanely. From their website you can click on the brand of chicken and read about the farm that the chickens come from. And of course their fried chicken tastes amazing. Flavorful and not greasy. Most of the food I have tried here has been good. The only real dissapointment was the sweet potatoes. Whatever they did to it covered up the flavor of the sweet potatoes with greasy cheese. I would recommend the chicken, grits and the fried green tomatoes."

  • "We went there for my husband's birthday. We started off with the fried green tomatoes. They were tasty but I can't say they were excellent. It was missing "bite." Nonetheless, very tasty. For our meals, my husband decided to go with the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. He inhaled it. He kept saying how tasty it was. It came on a pile of mashed potatoes and greens. I went with the Veg-O-Matic. I got butter peas, mac n chz and garlic greens. So good and very filling. We ended our meal with the pecan pie which was equally as good. After we finished eating the manager came by to greet us which put the icing on the cake. I would definitely recommend and we will be back!"

  • "This was our first time to South City Kitchen! The food was amazing. The ambiance is wonderful. The decor of the old house that has been renovated is wonderful. The staff took extra care to make our anniversary special!"

  • "Out of all my years living in Atlanta this was my first time and it was great... i was there for a lunch meeting... which was rather loud but it was great!"

  • "What a find! Walking distance to an event at Woodruff and the best food I have had in a very long time! The fried chicken was over the top and we fought over the last bite of pork chop. Def will be back!"

  • "I think that their fried green tomatoes are the best I've ever had. My husband feels the same way about their fried chicken. He had the fried chicken on the waffle and thought it was very nice, but he likes the fried chicken meal with potatoes the best. The service was a little rushed and inattentive this time, but we still enjoyed our lunch. This is a very busy and noisy restaurant unless you come when it first opens. We don't mind because we still enjoy our time, but it is hard to have a conversation."

  • "Food and service was excellent. I guess the noise level was about right for a weekday lunch crowd, but it was very loud at times."
    Dined on 3/31/2014
  • "I would not go back nor would I recommend this incredibly noisy place that had mediocre service and average food. Nothing was outstanding except for the absurd noise level. We walked in happy and sadly couldn't wait to escape. There are so many restaurants in Atlanta that are much, much better."

  • "I tried this place for brunch and got there shortly after opening. Service was timely and food was on time and very tasty. Drink portions are a little small, though my food itself was sufficient to fill me up. Noise level was minimal at the beginning, but towards the end of my meal, we could not hear ourselves converse."

  • "This is my favorite spot in Atlanta. There are a bunch of good restaurants in town, but when I'm in Atlanta, this is my go-to spot. Food is great, well priced, and the wine list gives you a bunch of choices that don't seem over-priced. We usually go with 8-10 people, and they do a great job of getting you served quickly. Service has always been very good. The grits croutons on the caesar salad are a must-have."

  • "Good flavors. Unique vegetables. Small portions. Very loud--poor acoustics--back ground music drowned out by conversations from tables too close together."
