A word from South Branch
South Branch is Chicago’s hottest weekday gathering spot, and boldest riverside event space. Envision lavish outdoor parties in the warm summer sun or holiday parties where the sprawling views of snow falling on the Chicago River accentuate the occasion. Big enough to host the largest affairs, but versatile enough to accommodate many smaller gatherings at once, South Branch can handle groups from 20-500. Closed to the public on the weekends, South Branch is exclusively available for private events. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I went with a group of five for lunch. Everyone seemed to like their food. My ahi tuna wrap was very good. The restaurant was noisy but that is, unfortunately, not unexpected. Some good beer on tap and lots of interesting bottled beer."

  • "It was pretty straight forward food, nothing blew me away."

  • "Extremely slow delvering food, close to 45 minutes after order placed. It around 1 Pm so the lunch rush was over."

  • "Silly me for not having come here sooner for a meal. I seem to have had a mental block about walking west of Wacker Drive. The menu, atmosphere, service and food are perfect for a work lunch. I couldn't have been happier with my salmon salad and tater tots. Our waiter was very gracious, patient and accomadating. Despite a full room, he never made us feel rushed or like a burden. I can't wait to come back again soon."

  • "First time to South Branch, it was a pleasent surprise! Vibrant Bar Scene......bordering on "loud", but a "fun" Energy. Food was well prepared and "good value"! Will be back!"

  • "The four of us had a great time at South Branch before the opera, but as the restaurant filled up, the noise level became a distraction. It was hard for us to converse at our table. Our waitress was outstanding and helpful. With so much lunch business, I believe that they need to do something about reducing the noise level. We all had a dinner salad with grilled chicken that was superb as evidenced by four clean plates."

  • "Even though I had a reservation there was a wait for my table. Service was spotty - the water guy was right there. The server was absent. This ppace is just "okay.""

  • "Maybe a bit too loud, but otherwise this restaurant hits its marks. Food and service are great, and prices are reasonable. No surprise that reservations for lunch can be tough to get at preferred times."

  • "I recently went here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. The only negative was it was a little too cold. Other than that the service was outstanding as was the food. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and offered many drink and entree suggestions. The cheese curds were on point and the skirt steak was THE best steak I have ever ordered at a restaurant! The baked cookie dough did not disappoint."

  • "Food only fair. Service fair but very busy during the lunch period."

  • "I frequently bring out of town colleagues for lunch. Always great service and a wonderful atmosphere."

  • "Always enjoy going to South Branch. The service and menu choices are excellent. The scene is great. And the place is very conversation-friendly, which can be hard to find in lunch spots in the loop."

  • "I recently took a co-worker here for lunch to celebrate her birthday. We were promptly seated and our order was taken in a timely fashion. Our tortilla soup arrived quickly and was quite flavorful. Our entrees took a very long time and the restaurant seemed to be short staffed. I also had notated in my open table reservation that we were celebrating a birthday and included the girls name. Nothing was done to even acknowledge her birthday. The hostess should have communicated this info to the waiter so he could have had the opportunity to bring out a piece of cake or even wish her Happy Birthday!"

  • "I always recommend this place to anyone traveling through Union station. The food never disappoints, and the service is friendly, fast, and reliable. This is a great standard for lunch, happy hour, or dinner!"

  • "South Branch is the place to be in the loop for lunch or happy hour. One problem is it is too popular so you need to make lunch reservations early and the latest time you can get is for 11:30 unless you are doing a very large group."

  • "While staying in a nearby hotel on a snowy night in chicago, we found this after work crowd restaurant. It was hopping with young people despite the weather outside. It was fun watching them while we ate our burgers."

  • "Chopped salad was delicious! One of the girls ordered the skirt steak and raved about it. Done to perfection. Excellent soup de jour (Mushroom with a very tasty oyster)."

  • "Had a salad that was not good at all. Spinach salad with an awful dressing. Couldn't even finish it. The place had so much noise that I could not even converse with my lunch guest. Not a place for a business lunch at all."
    Dined on 12/18/2013
  • "We had a large party and were seated in a private room with only one other similarly sized group. Since the partition could be closed, it was not too loud, which was wonderful for making conversation."
    Dined on 12/17/2013
  • "This was my second time there and I wasn't to pleased with my turkey BLT. The bread looked like it was toasted but really wasn't and it lacked flavor. How could anyone mess up a BLT...so basic...But I have to say their chicken tortilla soup was to die for..."

  • "A good very busy and young growd for lunch. Food was ok."

  • "I went on a Friday night and there were a couple private parties in the bar area. It was not too crowded especially once we were seated. It was a little loud but for a Friday night it was expected. Overall the food was good and I would recommend this place for friends or couples going out, maybe not the best place for families with small children though (especially on a Friday night)."

  • "Love the food, location and vibe. The indoor area is much better now that they turned the music down. It used to be very loud and I would actually avoid it b/c it was difficult to have conversations but it has definitely improved."

  • "Good spot. Frustrated over having to get a reservation only early or late by policy (I believe) but other than that a good experience. Server was attentive but not pushy. Food was good."

  • "We really enjoyed our food, including the Pork Shank Wings and Yellowfin Tuna Sandwich with Tater Tots. Great beer list, and ample wine list, too. However, service was a little odd. Waitress was constantly in a rush, and hard to place an order with - it was also very loud, and so it felt hard to communicate. We had a 7:30pm reservation, and towards the middle to end of our dinner, she told us it would be last call in the kitchen and if we wanted dessert, we would need to order it now. Seemed a little odd to be closing the kitchen so early in the middle of downtown Chicago!"

  • "We were 12 minutes late due to heavy rains, and told our lunch appointment was canceled because we weren't within 10 minutes of the time. We then had to wait for a table. We asked the hostess to look outside and see how the rain was coming down and delayed our arrival. She told us "the system" cancels people, and there was nothing she could do about it. Will be awhile before (if ever) I return to a spot I have taken clients to regularly."

  • "Salads were good, although only about 6 on the menu. Great as a lunch spot, but a little loud. Great atmosphere, right on the river, near Union Station."
    Dined on 11/5/2013
  • "I ordered the Ahi Tuna salad which was unappealing both visually and taste. The ahi was served cold and the cuts of the daikon and other salad were inconsistent while the dressing really lacked flavor. I asked for soy sauce 3 times before receiving it toward the end of my meal. Too bad our server asked us how our dishes were before we even had a chance to taste them. Had he actually stopped by again to inquire how we were doing, I would have returned the salad and ordered a margarita but that didn't happen either."

  • "Fine restarant, great food and atmosphere but definitely not a place to go for a quiet sit down or intimate dinner or occasion. Tables are right next to the bar so its very loud during happy hours and into the night, til about 8/9 on a Friday when I went. Food was great but the service was awful and I think that was due to the large bar crowd."

  • "Always very crowded. Expect a wait at prime times even with a reservation. Could manage the wait process better. Lots of people standing in small space to wait for table detracts from ambience a bit, but otherwise a very good lunch experience."

  • "Of the 2 spots close to my office with outdoor dining I prefer South Branch. On Oct 15 (I was there for a quick bite before the theater. Since it was cool we ate indoors. I appreciated being seated before my reservation time since we had theater tickets. Biggest negative about indoor seating (I like the ambiance) is that the noise level is really high. I also recently grabbed a bite after an evening exhibit at Art Institute before catching Metra home to Evanston. Again it was a week night (Thurs) and due to temperature we ate indoors. Noise level was very high. I like that the food is tasty, ambiance nice and though crowd is younger/hipper than me I still like South Branch-noise is the only issue. In Chicago you can't always eat outside."

  • "Great food, service, atmosphere! Was great to be able to still sit outside in nearly mid-October! Would definitely recommend South Branch to friends!"

  • "Ate outside on the river. Very comfortable and hi. Some construction going on across the river at union station but obviously not sB fault. Pleasant waitress"

  • "With its expansive outdoor patio lunch at South Branch, at least when the weather is good, it is a good choice. My brisket sandwich was very good as was the salmon salad that my wife had. Service could have been a bit more attentive, but perhaps that was partially due to being outdoors. Excellent beer list."
