A word from South Branch
South Branch is Chicago’s hottest weekday gathering spot, and boldest riverside event space. Envision lavish outdoor parties in the warm summer sun or holiday parties where the sprawling views of snow falling on the Chicago River accentuate the occasion. Big enough to host the largest affairs, but versatile enough to accommodate many smaller gatherings at once, South Branch can handle groups from 20-500. Closed to the public on the weekends, South Branch is exclusively available for private events. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "It was my first time at South Branch this week as a birthday lunch for my intern. The host was awkward and I had to initiate to mention my reservation, which I made specifically to mention the bday. He asked our indoor/outdoor preference (we chose in) and walked us back to a table adjacent to the bar - an odd choice given that there were plenty of tables with a view open. As for the food, I'm a vegetarian an had one clear option, the basil hummus wrap, which was good by itself; the fries were like the kind you'd find at a 24-hour greasy spoon diner. My intern had soup and a side salad and said both were good. Overall, the ambience was nice and the service was okay - although not a single "Happy Birthday" from anyone. I was disappointed."

  • "I generally enjoy South Branch. When the weather is good, though, it feels like they are much too busy to deliver great service. Our servers would regularly disappear and it took forever to get the check."

  • "While they don't have a gluten free menu (I am gluten intolerant so don't have to watch it as closely as others) but I had several excellent choices available to me, and the chopped salad (without the cheese) was excellent. Nice sized portions."

  • "Always good food and an enjoyable atmosphere, would return either for a gathering, brunch or lunch"

  • "South Branch is a great place for a business lunch. It's right in the loop along the river. The food is good and reasonably priced. The service is attentive and accommodating. The beer selection is good, although perhaps not quite as good some of The Bottle Neck Group's other locations (i.e. Old Town Pour House, The Boundary, Howell's and Hood). Overall, a very good restaurant to bring colleagues and/or clients."

  • "Excellent for business conversation, despite the large open room, it was an easy audible discussion. Always a solid, dependable choice for a customer lunch!"

  • "We meet there now and again after work for drinks and have appetizers. The wine, drinks and food are always great. The bang bang shrimp has a great spicy flavor and the spinach dip is always good. The service is always wonderful"

  • "I ordered the salmon with spinach and it was quite salty! This was my second dining experience and the meal was not up to expectations. The patio is great for outdoor cocktails."

  • "But next time, and there will be a next time probably next week, I will try the rest of the menu! The food was fresh and delicious and the location is perfect."

  • "Liked the new menu and loved the new BBQ chicken sandwich."
    Dined on 4/30/2014
  • "The salad I ordered was overpriced and it was not fresh. The lettuce was wilted and the toppings had a foul smell."

  • "I used Open Table to find an outdoor dining spot near the office for a birthday lunch and couldn't be more pleased. The outdoor seating was spacious and comfortable, the service was perfect and both diners were more than pleased with their food. I'll be back soon."

  • "I went with a group of five for lunch. Everyone seemed to like their food. My ahi tuna wrap was very good. The restaurant was noisy but that is, unfortunately, not unexpected. Some good beer on tap and lots of interesting bottled beer."

  • "It was pretty straight forward food, nothing blew me away."

  • "Extremely slow delvering food, close to 45 minutes after order placed. It around 1 Pm so the lunch rush was over."

  • "Silly me for not having come here sooner for a meal. I seem to have had a mental block about walking west of Wacker Drive. The menu, atmosphere, service and food are perfect for a work lunch. I couldn't have been happier with my salmon salad and tater tots. Our waiter was very gracious, patient and accomadating. Despite a full room, he never made us feel rushed or like a burden. I can't wait to come back again soon."

  • "First time to South Branch, it was a pleasent surprise! Vibrant Bar Scene......bordering on "loud", but a "fun" Energy. Food was well prepared and "good value"! Will be back!"

  • "The four of us had a great time at South Branch before the opera, but as the restaurant filled up, the noise level became a distraction. It was hard for us to converse at our table. Our waitress was outstanding and helpful. With so much lunch business, I believe that they need to do something about reducing the noise level. We all had a dinner salad with grilled chicken that was superb as evidenced by four clean plates."

  • "Even though I had a reservation there was a wait for my table. Service was spotty - the water guy was right there. The server was absent. This ppace is just "okay.""

  • "Maybe a bit too loud, but otherwise this restaurant hits its marks. Food and service are great, and prices are reasonable. No surprise that reservations for lunch can be tough to get at preferred times."

  • "I recently went here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. The only negative was it was a little too cold. Other than that the service was outstanding as was the food. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and offered many drink and entree suggestions. The cheese curds were on point and the skirt steak was THE best steak I have ever ordered at a restaurant! The baked cookie dough did not disappoint."

  • "Always enjoy going to South Branch. The service and menu choices are excellent. The scene is great. And the place is very conversation-friendly, which can be hard to find in lunch spots in the loop."

  • "I recently took a co-worker here for lunch to celebrate her birthday. We were promptly seated and our order was taken in a timely fashion. Our tortilla soup arrived quickly and was quite flavorful. Our entrees took a very long time and the restaurant seemed to be short staffed. I also had notated in my open table reservation that we were celebrating a birthday and included the girls name. Nothing was done to even acknowledge her birthday. The hostess should have communicated this info to the waiter so he could have had the opportunity to bring out a piece of cake or even wish her Happy Birthday!"

  • "I always recommend this place to anyone traveling through Union station. The food never disappoints, and the service is friendly, fast, and reliable. This is a great standard for lunch, happy hour, or dinner!"

  • "South Branch is the place to be in the loop for lunch or happy hour. One problem is it is too popular so you need to make lunch reservations early and the latest time you can get is for 11:30 unless you are doing a very large group."

  • "While staying in a nearby hotel on a snowy night in chicago, we found this after work crowd restaurant. It was hopping with young people despite the weather outside. It was fun watching them while we ate our burgers."
    Dined on 1/17/2014
  • "Chopped salad was delicious! One of the girls ordered the skirt steak and raved about it. Done to perfection. Excellent soup de jour (Mushroom with a very tasty oyster)."
    Dined on 12/30/2013
  • "Had a salad that was not good at all. Spinach salad with an awful dressing. Couldn't even finish it. The place had so much noise that I could not even converse with my lunch guest. Not a place for a business lunch at all."
    Dined on 12/18/2013
  • "We had a large party and were seated in a private room with only one other similarly sized group. Since the partition could be closed, it was not too loud, which was wonderful for making conversation."
    Dined on 12/17/2013
  • "This was my second time there and I wasn't to pleased with my turkey BLT. The bread looked like it was toasted but really wasn't and it lacked flavor. How could anyone mess up a BLT...so basic...But I have to say their chicken tortilla soup was to die for..."

  • "A good very busy and young growd for lunch. Food was ok."

  • "I went on a Friday night and there were a couple private parties in the bar area. It was not too crowded especially once we were seated. It was a little loud but for a Friday night it was expected. Overall the food was good and I would recommend this place for friends or couples going out, maybe not the best place for families with small children though (especially on a Friday night)."

  • "Love the food, location and vibe. The indoor area is much better now that they turned the music down. It used to be very loud and I would actually avoid it b/c it was difficult to have conversations but it has definitely improved."
    Dined on 11/19/2013
  • "Good spot. Frustrated over having to get a reservation only early or late by policy (I believe) but other than that a good experience. Server was attentive but not pushy. Food was good."

  • "We really enjoyed our food, including the Pork Shank Wings and Yellowfin Tuna Sandwich with Tater Tots. Great beer list, and ample wine list, too. However, service was a little odd. Waitress was constantly in a rush, and hard to place an order with - it was also very loud, and so it felt hard to communicate. We had a 7:30pm reservation, and towards the middle to end of our dinner, she told us it would be last call in the kitchen and if we wanted dessert, we would need to order it now. Seemed a little odd to be closing the kitchen so early in the middle of downtown Chicago!"
