A convenient spot if you have a SFJAZZ event. The food was good but the entree portions were very small and the overall menu was limited and somewhat confusing to navigate. The service staff needs serious training. No water offered, took a long time to get their attention to order a drink and second round came when food was almost gone. Cold when weather is bad, especially when any party larger than 2 as you will be against a glass wall. Dark, hard to read font on menu.

Restaurant used to serve southern food, now serves Mexican food. Food was ok, nothing inspirational. Our waiter was pleasant but very inexperienced, and we guessed was a busboy filling in for a waiter. Room is very noisy - even when there is no one performing in the concert hall. It would be helpful if the restaurant stayed open until 10:00 or 10:30 so that one could have dinner after a performance at SFJAZZ.

Dining at the bar was vibrant and fun, the bartender himself made the evening. However, the food, timing of service, and general service was disappointing. We didn't realize there was a change in chef and total menu. Expectation is so much of dining. Plus we kept hearing disgruntled customers who were expecting to be able to take glass of wine into the performance; this aspect may need to be advertised differently.

No nachos and burritos here. This food is first class, exciting, fresh ingredients and not what you get at the average Mexican place. Thoughtfully designed dishes with flavors and seasonings that are fresh, savory and bright. Great place for a pre-show dinner. Service is friendly and

The new menu at South is well worth checking out. They've gone in a whole new direction with Mexican influences and every dish we had was delicious. The service was great - very helpful in picking a wine, and super efficient as we were dining in the pre-SFJAZZ show rush. Highly recommend that you give this new iteration a chance - whether pre-show or another night when you are in Hayes Valley.

Menu is tapas style, small items that are reasonably priced. Food is deliciously seasoned. Ingredients are fresh. The wine list is dismal so had to have a beer. They don't serve bread or tortillas unless you request and pay for them (need something to soak up those great sauces). A gesture that is unworthy of the otherwise wonderful meal.

First time at South--great location as we were going to a concert at SF Jazz Center. Service was excellent. Food was mediocre. I hate to complain but we did mention to our waitperson that the bowl "that was "too hot to touch" contained food that was at best room temperature--at worst Thoug cold. She graciously removed the item from our bill though we did not ask her to. Next time we will choose another place to eat before a concert.

We're fans of Charlie Phan and of SF Jazz, but for such a great venue and ownership, South is a disappointment. The service was goofy (not sure how else to describe it) and two of the five dishes we ordered were downright losers. The empanadas seemed undercooked and tasted so doughy that the flavor overwhelmed the filling. The tillapia was also a tragedy -- the presentation was similar to something that had been dropped on the floor or counter and simply piled onto a new plate. The food runner who delivered our chile stuff with goat cheese appetiser described it a "cheese wrapped in, uh, leaves." Not the end of the world, but our server seemed equally disconnected from the food and experience that was being delivered.

Menu descriptions of food look good. But food temperature was un even and presentation so so. Food itself needs a little bit more pizazz. Good cocktails and friendly staff. Hopefully they can raise their food expiditing skills and it would defiantly become a no brainier go to before a show.

Food was interesting but the menu is very limited. The selection of wines by the glass was limited too and most were unknown to us. Would like to see more California wines featured. Didn't really like the taste of the wines. Enjoyed the experience overall and it is perfect for dinner before a performance.

Although there were very few other diners at our early hour (5:30) the service and the food were excellent. There are several choices of small plates, salads, and larger main courses from which to compose a meal for every appetite. All of the dishes we tried were innovative and tasty. The tequila surprise cocktail was also refreshing. Only two blocks from the opera house, this is a casual alternative for pre-performance dining.

We went there for a late dinner after a performance at Jazz Center. The staff were very welcoming. They greeted us cordially, seemed happy to see us and serve us. They explained the selections. Menu seems to change each time we dine there. The "appetizers are always unusual . This time the selections seemed to be Latin choices. We had the lingua (tongue) which was delicate and delicious. The winter squash soup was very tastey too. our friends selected the chili and said it was excellent.

At a world class jazz center there should be a world class restaurant. With so many great choices within walking distance, I found the food on the new menu at South confused and confusing, lacking in flavor, very small portions and short ribs that were extremely tough. I am craving an organic, sustainable, inventive restaurant that could crank out some amazing food from appetizers to desert. While the previous South had some very good choices, the ones I found on the new menu did not entice me. Please Mr. Phan, I know you can create amazing dishes like the ones I ate earlier in the week at Slanted Door. Our server was really nice and tried very hard but was lacking in experience and, well...service. Hoping for big improvements.

The last time we went to South, it was mostly Creole dishes. Now it is Mexican cuisine. The dishes were good, but the menu was not as flexible as I needed: I don't eat tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and peppers. There were no main dishes that had none of these. However the chef made appropriate substitutions, and I had a good meal. I was put off by the unexpected change of cuisine.

I really like Hard Water, so this was just an utter disappointment. The hostess (who looked like a teenager) could not be bothered to make eye contact with me while she was on the phone, and I guess there's only one tablet to check folks in? I stood there waiting for several minutes outside a not-at-all busy restaurant. Others on staff were great, including our server. The food was sub-par, including the skirt steak dish which was inedible. I have never left steak on the table before, (except to take home for leftovers)! Drinks were fine. Decor/ambiance was equal to that of a museum cafe - cold & uncomfortable. And they still haven't "solved" the issue Bauer mentioned over a year ago about not having serving utensils for the shared plates?!

The food was delicious and beautifully prepared. You can tell a great deal of attention and care is paid to quality ingredients, careful preparation, and presentation. The same is true of their cocktails. Everything was truly excellent. The atmosphere is nice too. The chef must be an artist - you can feel the care - and, yes, the love - that went into the preparation of the dishes. The only downside for me (mundane as this may be) was the relatively high price for the smallish portions, and that I was still hungry after eating. For the price, it would have been nice to have slighly larger portions. However, if you're seeking a great aesthetic/sensory experience and beautiful, orignal dishes South is definitely very highly recommended.

While I miss the fantastically original yet traditional essence of the former New Orleans cuisine at South, the latest incarnation as a principally Mexican menu, again with the signature mix of tradition and imagination, works wonderfully. Good service, excellent bar (and they still make the best Sazerac west of the Big Easy).

As SFJazz season ticket holders we really wanted South to be a winner. But it wasn't. Party of four found: Squash blossoms nicely prepared but insipid. Prawns good. Empanadas tough, with little discernible flavor. Quail undercooked, sent back to kitchen. Pork portions OK and well cooked, but the dish was insipid. Wine list quite an unusual puzzle; however, our Excellent Waiter was a very helpful guide, and wines we selected were good. South's kitchen fails to deliver the interesting and exotic flavors with which its menu tempts the diner. The room, by the way, is a hit, and (surprise for SF!) not as noisy as it looks. Bottom line: several other nearby restaurants offer more satisfying dining experiences, pre-concert or otherwise.

This was the second time we had eaten at South. The first time was when it was still southern food (beans and rice, greens, etc...). We really enjoyed that experience. The new focus - Mexican perhaps? - is not a success. We had the meatballs, butter salad, shrimp sope, and pickled pasilla relleno with albacore. The salad and shrimp sope were ok, nothing special. The meatballs and the relleno were both not good, especially the relleno. On the relleno, the pickles were unedible, the albacore way overcooked, and served cold. That one was difficult to finish (we were too hungry not to eat). The meatballs themselves were ok - a little mealy - but they were served cold with an odd sauce. At what amounted to $3 per 1" meatball, not worth it.
