    We went there for a late dinner after a performance at Jazz Center. The staff were very welcoming. They greeted us cordially, seemed happy to see us and serve us. They explained the selections. Menu seems to change each time we dine there. The "appetizers are always unusual . This time the selections seemed to be Latin choices. We had the lingua (tongue) which was delicate and delicious. The winter squash soup was very tastey too. our friends selected the chili and said it was excellent.

    Enjoyed every aspect of the meal. Small plates to share and eclectic. Great melding of flavors. I highly recommend seeing one of the spectacular Jazz Shows in addition to the food.

    At a world class jazz center there should be a world class restaurant. With so many great choices within walking distance, I found the food on the new menu at South confused and confusing, lacking in flavor, very small portions and short ribs that were extremely tough. I am craving an organic, sustainable, inventive restaurant that could crank out some amazing food from appetizers to desert. While the previous South had some very good choices, the ones I found on the new menu did not entice me. Please Mr. Phan, I know you can create amazing dishes like the ones I ate earlier in the week at Slanted Door. Our server was really nice and tried very hard but was lacking in experience and, well...service. Hoping for big improvements.

    When South at SF Jazz first opened, their short ribs were tender and falling off the bone. The short ribs I had Friday night were bordering on tough, requiring serious knife work. Very disappointing.

    The last time we went to South, it was mostly Creole dishes. Now it is Mexican cuisine. The dishes were good, but the menu was not as flexible as I needed: I don't eat tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and peppers. There were no main dishes that had none of these. However the chef made appropriate substitutions, and I had a good meal. I was put off by the unexpected change of cuisine.

    SFJazz is a *great* new cultural gem. But the attached restaurant isn't worth patronizing--poor reception, poor food, mediocre service. There are *many* better choices in the nearby neighborhood.

    I really like Hard Water, so this was just an utter disappointment. The hostess (who looked like a teenager) could not be bothered to make eye contact with me while she was on the phone, and I guess there's only one tablet to check folks in? I stood there waiting for several minutes outside a not-at-all busy restaurant. Others on staff were great, including our server. The food was sub-par, including the skirt steak dish which was inedible. I have never left steak on the table before, (except to take home for leftovers)! Drinks were fine. Decor/ambiance was equal to that of a museum cafe - cold & uncomfortable. And they still haven't "solved" the issue Bauer mentioned over a year ago about not having serving utensils for the shared plates?!

    The food was delicious and beautifully prepared. You can tell a great deal of attention and care is paid to quality ingredients, careful preparation, and presentation. The same is true of their cocktails. Everything was truly excellent. The atmosphere is nice too. The chef must be an artist - you can feel the care - and, yes, the love - that went into the preparation of the dishes. The only downside for me (mundane as this may be) was the relatively high price for the smallish portions, and that I was still hungry after eating. For the price, it would have been nice to have slighly larger portions. However, if you're seeking a great aesthetic/sensory experience and beautiful, orignal dishes South is definitely very highly recommended.

    While I miss the fantastically original yet traditional essence of the former New Orleans cuisine at South, the latest incarnation as a principally Mexican menu, again with the signature mix of tradition and imagination, works wonderfully. Good service, excellent bar (and they still make the best Sazerac west of the Big Easy).

    The menu offering were interesting as were the cocktail selections but the given the prices the portions were very small. Service was very spotty . . . my girlfriend's entree came was was eaten when mine arrived. I might try again but at these prices there are other options.

    The cocktails are fabulous. The food is fine, but nothing special. Service was a bit spotty. We were very anxious to try this as a pre-jazz concert venue, but probably will not go back given all the other excellent choices in Hayes Valley.

    As SFJazz season ticket holders we really wanted South to be a winner. But it wasn't. Party of four found: Squash blossoms nicely prepared but insipid. Prawns good. Empanadas tough, with little discernible flavor. Quail undercooked, sent back to kitchen. Pork portions OK and well cooked, but the dish was insipid. Wine list quite an unusual puzzle; however, our Excellent Waiter was a very helpful guide, and wines we selected were good. South's kitchen fails to deliver the interesting and exotic flavors with which its menu tempts the diner. The room, by the way, is a hit, and (surprise for SF!) not as noisy as it looks. Bottom line: several other nearby restaurants offer more satisfying dining experiences, pre-concert or otherwise.

    This was the second time we had eaten at South. The first time was when it was still southern food (beans and rice, greens, etc...). We really enjoyed that experience. The new focus - Mexican perhaps? - is not a success. We had the meatballs, butter salad, shrimp sope, and pickled pasilla relleno with albacore. The salad and shrimp sope were ok, nothing special. The meatballs and the relleno were both not good, especially the relleno. On the relleno, the pickles were unedible, the albacore way overcooked, and served cold. That one was difficult to finish (we were too hungry not to eat). The meatballs themselves were ok - a little mealy - but they were served cold with an odd sauce. At what amounted to $3 per 1" meatball, not worth it.

    The food was very disappointing. The meat was very tough and chewy, the salmon was way overcooked. We were going to the jazz performance and hoped this would be an easy solution for dinner..it could have been, very sad.

    Different menu than what appeared on website for jazz center. The ersatz Mexican food prepared there was bland, overcooked and uninteresting in every way. They didn't even have Salsa and they call themselves a Mexican restaurant. Thumbs down!

    Went to dinner before opening night at the Symphony, was sad I had to leave food on my plate as everything from start to finish was outstanding. I will be back to try more option, I had the braised pork and my Aunt had the Quail. We only touch on a few items on the menu so looking forward to exploring more.

    We liked South before, and we like it even more. The menu now has a creative Mexican twist. Our group enjoyed all items. We split a number of small plates, and had two main courses. A wonderful way to complete an evening of jazz.

    After reading previous reviews I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent and the food was really good. The portions could have been a bit bigger as we were a party of 5 so we had to order at least two of everything. The space is nice if you are facing in the direction of the bar but cold and not inviting if facing the lobby of the SF Jazz center. It would be great of they could put up curtains to block the lobby and make the dining area feel more intimate. We will definitely go back to try more of the offerings.

    I was late for the performance at SFJazz. The staff was excellent. I ordered something I would normally not have ordered and it was wonderful. Very original food here. I was in and out in time to find a seat before the performance began. The restaurant was not full, it was late, so the noise level was low. Don't know what it would be like if all the tables were full.

    The new menu is really interesting with a lot of small plates to choose from you and your guests can taste the various menu items. I really liked the creative take on Mex/Southwest. the presentations were great. The service is a little slow but getting to know the new menu items. Loved the Mole Sauce with the Rabbit. Its a wonderful place to enjoy the combo of great food and incredible entertainment/jazz shows. Love the combo

    I am very disappointed that South is now a Mexican restaurant. The food was mediocre at best. thrown together with not thought or love. The Flor de Calabaza rellena was cold and grease drenched. We couldn't eat it. The Molotes with black beans were little empanada's, hard dried out and with out taste. The shrimp sopa was tasty but you couldn't cut the masa cake underneath. It was so hard, the knife so dull, it seemed you had to saw the thing. Finally we tore it apart with our fingers. Not a good first impression for a restaurant form such a high caliber chef. The only saving grace are the drinks, and they seem a little watered down as well. Charles Phan, please got back to what you to best. a great Vietnamese restaurant with modest prices

    We were surprised that South has become a Mexican Restaurant. We had been there before when they served southern food and while the food and drinks were good, the service was completely disorganized. But now the Mexican restaurant must be under new management as the service was very good. We are delighted as it is so convenient when going to a jazz concert. So we would go again.

    We have enjoyed several past meals at South, but the menu has changed completely, eliminating all of our previous favorites. The new menu is confusing and hard to understand, with no translation of obscure Spanish terms. Even the dessert menu, which should be irresistibly tempting, required item by item translations by the server. The wines by the glass were of poor quality and offered almost no California selections. We were told by the manager that the ownership had not changed, but they had decided to introduce a completely new format. I can only hope that they abandon this experiment quickly.

    We liked it better when it was Charles Phan's restaurant. We love Mexican food, and loved the menu, but except for the fried squash blossoms, found the rest of the items we ordered to be ordinary. The waiter was a bit forgetful about bringing our coffee to correspond with the delivery of our dessert. All in all, it was not a negative experience, but we will most likely try somewhere else when we next go the the Jazz Center.

    Charles Phan recently changed the menu at South to Mexican.. It was really good when it was Southern cooking and was more in keeping with where it was located. Now there is a dumbed down Mexican menu. We had a number of small plates and only one , the sopas, came even close to being anything I'd want to eat again. This place so convenient when going to a show, but that can't even get me back to South again...

    Not a great experience there recently - they did not have the non-alcoholic beer (which is on the menu and I have had there before), dinner drinks came at the same time dinner (they gave me a "substitute" and didn't charge) ....NOT GOOD SERVICE.

    Went because it was associated with the slanted door. Food was pretty good, but we both had stomachaches the next morning. Ambience felt a lot like a museum café. Much like the one at the MOMA, but smaller. Service was pleasant, even got a free beer because waitress said it took her too long to get me my first beer.

    I had wanted to enjoy a meal that didn't cost much. I looked up this restaruant online and the prices is what sold me. When I arrived with my friend and her son, they greeted us very politely and then seated us (reservations are required). I was surprised that there was music in the next room, relaxing music.. live... the staff was very friendly and our server Max was very helpful and offered something for the child that was not on the menu. The drinks and the food are great and I would definitely come again when I'm in town.

    The new tapas format doesn't really work. Start with a menu that has no English translation for the many Spanish-named dishes and a waitress who mumbles the explanations. A wine list which stresses Spanish wines to the near exclusion of superior US, French and Italian wines. A décor with no warmth. And finally, as many misses among the dishes as hits. Why the owner of such a premier restaurant as Slanted Door couldn't do a better job here is difficult to fathom.

    The food was delicious but very tiny portions (it is a small plate venue), mostly spicy, what I would categorize as appropriate to go with drinks. We were ordering dinner and found it challenging as one of our party couldn't eat spicy food. I would go back for a drink and order one or two of the small plates. Service was quick and you can't beat the location when you have tickets for an event at the jazz center.

    As regulars at SFJazz, My wife and I have enjoyed South since it opened. We really enjoyed its previous iteration, with excellent fried chicken and fried oysters, and Boudin balls. We were very happy to learn that the change to Mexican was a success. The zucchini squash blossoms stuffed with ricotta and the tostadas were so good, we ordered them twice! Everything was excellent, and the bar continues to put out phenomenal cocktails. Perfect as a pre-concert meal, but worth a trip even if you aren't going to see jazz.
