Diner Reviews
  • "After reading previous reviews I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent and the food was really good. The portions could have been a bit bigger as we were a party of 5 so we had to order at least two of everything. The space is nice if you are facing in the direction of the bar but cold and not inviting if facing the lobby of the SF Jazz center. It would be great of they could put up curtains to block the lobby and make the dining area feel more intimate. We will definitely go back to try more of the offerings."

  • "I was late for the performance at SFJazz. The staff was excellent. I ordered something I would normally not have ordered and it was wonderful. Very original food here. I was in and out in time to find a seat before the performance began. The restaurant was not full, it was late, so the noise level was low. Don't know what it would be like if all the tables were full."

  • "Food was good, but portions could've been larger. Expensive. Service with a smile and very good."

  • "Good spot for decent food before/after a show at my fav SF Jazz Center. It was easier to book than most in Hayes Valley."

  • "The new menu is really interesting with a lot of small plates to choose from you and your guests can taste the various menu items. I really liked the creative take on Mex/Southwest. the presentations were great. The service is a little slow but getting to know the new menu items. Loved the Mole Sauce with the Rabbit. Its a wonderful place to enjoy the combo of great food and incredible entertainment/jazz shows. Love the combo"

  • "I am very disappointed that South is now a Mexican restaurant. The food was mediocre at best. thrown together with not thought or love. The Flor de Calabaza rellena was cold and grease drenched. We couldn't eat it. The Molotes with black beans were little empanada's, hard dried out and with out taste. The shrimp sopa was tasty but you couldn't cut the masa cake underneath. It was so hard, the knife so dull, it seemed you had to saw the thing. Finally we tore it apart with our fingers. Not a good first impression for a restaurant form such a high caliber chef. The only saving grace are the drinks, and they seem a little watered down as well. Charles Phan, please got back to what you to best. a great Vietnamese restaurant with modest prices"

  • "We were surprised that South has become a Mexican Restaurant. We had been there before when they served southern food and while the food and drinks were good, the service was completely disorganized. But now the Mexican restaurant must be under new management as the service was very good. We are delighted as it is so convenient when going to a jazz concert. So we would go again."

  • "We have enjoyed several past meals at South, but the menu has changed completely, eliminating all of our previous favorites. The new menu is confusing and hard to understand, with no translation of obscure Spanish terms. Even the dessert menu, which should be irresistibly tempting, required item by item translations by the server. The wines by the glass were of poor quality and offered almost no California selections. We were told by the manager that the ownership had not changed, but they had decided to introduce a completely new format. I can only hope that they abandon this experiment quickly."

  • "We liked it better when it was Charles Phan's restaurant. We love Mexican food, and loved the menu, but except for the fried squash blossoms, found the rest of the items we ordered to be ordinary. The waiter was a bit forgetful about bringing our coffee to correspond with the delivery of our dessert. All in all, it was not a negative experience, but we will most likely try somewhere else when we next go the the Jazz Center."

  • "Charles Phan recently changed the menu at South to Mexican.. It was really good when it was Southern cooking and was more in keeping with where it was located. Now there is a dumbed down Mexican menu. We had a number of small plates and only one , the sopas, came even close to being anything I'd want to eat again. This place so convenient when going to a show, but that can't even get me back to South again..."

  • "Not a great experience there recently - they did not have the non-alcoholic beer (which is on the menu and I have had there before), dinner drinks came at the same time dinner (they gave me a "substitute" and didn't charge) ....NOT GOOD SERVICE."

  • "Went because it was associated with the slanted door. Food was pretty good, but we both had stomachaches the next morning. Ambience felt a lot like a museum café. Much like the one at the MOMA, but smaller. Service was pleasant, even got a free beer because waitress said it took her too long to get me my first beer."

  • "I had wanted to enjoy a meal that didn't cost much. I looked up this restaruant online and the prices is what sold me. When I arrived with my friend and her son, they greeted us very politely and then seated us (reservations are required). I was surprised that there was music in the next room, relaxing music.. live... the staff was very friendly and our server Max was very helpful and offered something for the child that was not on the menu. The drinks and the food are great and I would definitely come again when I'm in town."

  • "The new tapas format doesn't really work. Start with a menu that has no English translation for the many Spanish-named dishes and a waitress who mumbles the explanations. A wine list which stresses Spanish wines to the near exclusion of superior US, French and Italian wines. A décor with no warmth. And finally, as many misses among the dishes as hits. Why the owner of such a premier restaurant as Slanted Door couldn't do a better job here is difficult to fathom."

  • "The food was delicious but very tiny portions (it is a small plate venue), mostly spicy, what I would categorize as appropriate to go with drinks. We were ordering dinner and found it challenging as one of our party couldn't eat spicy food. I would go back for a drink and order one or two of the small plates. Service was quick and you can't beat the location when you have tickets for an event at the jazz center."

  • "Strange fusion of food. Would only go there for jazz if other nearby restaurants were full. Saves time."

  • "As regulars at SFJazz, My wife and I have enjoyed South since it opened. We really enjoyed its previous iteration, with excellent fried chicken and fried oysters, and Boudin balls. We were very happy to learn that the change to Mexican was a success. The zucchini squash blossoms stuffed with ricotta and the tostadas were so good, we ordered them twice! Everything was excellent, and the bar continues to put out phenomenal cocktails. Perfect as a pre-concert meal, but worth a trip even if you aren't going to see jazz."

  • "One of the best places in the city for Spanish tapas. Much more Spanish food than Mexican. Great ambiance and fun. Also nice if you going to the jazz club."

  • "The Mexican food now being served at South was good and creative, but I really loved the Southern cuisine that is no more - and shall miss it."

  • "I am sooooo sorry to encounter still more Mexican food in San Francisco! I counted more than a dozen Mexican restaurants near SF Jazz already, AND they're cheaper. What happened to the great Southern Comfort food that went so well with New Orleans and Jazz motifs? My family will be back for the music but eat elsewhere from now on."

  • "I took my friend here before a concert at SFJazz. Food was great and served tapas style...easy to share. Service was great and fun! A good combo for me. Also nice to just roll out of the restaurant into the music venue. We'll be doing this again."

  • "Very hopping place. My food was great but not as good as my first visit"

  • "We had a "mystery fish" (tilapia?) that definitely wasn't filet of sole. The roasted cauliflower was clearly not roasted — barely cooked and drenched in vinegar. The corn salad was uneventful. The deviled egg was good (hard to screw that up). Wine was fairly priced. Lemon tart was nothing special. Our service was terribly obsequious. Based on our experience, we certainly wouldn't go back to try the other menu choices. All in all, the menu was obviously designed to provide the least amount of value for the most price: Profitability without delivering value is called stealing. A spectacular venue for sophisticated music needs a complementary menu. SF Jazz and its musical patrons deserve better. Fantastic disappointment."

  • "Our recent visit to South was our first this year, after feeling ho-hum about it a couple of times last year. This year, we went to several SFJazz shows without visiting South, until now. I should note that we went on a Monday evening. And now we liked the menu, the execution of the several dishes we chose, and the service that we received. If you're seeing a show at wonderful SFJazz, this has become a fine place to eat and/or drink beforehand."

  • "The food was very bland. The flavors of the fried chicken were non-existent. The red beans and rice were very bland with no hint of thyme, bay leaf, no hint of flavors of the corner stone of creole/cajun cooking. The collard greens were good. The corn bread muffins were good. The macaroni and cheese was very bland and I thought a better selection of cheeses would have made the flavors pop. The jambalaya was very bland, the flavor and texture of chicken was good, but the rest of it fell short. The staff was extremely nice and did their best to accommodate the patrons needs however they were understaffed and it showed. I think management could have done better planning when it came to staffing."

  • "I wanted to like this place, but the fried oysters were almost raw and overly spiced, the fritters were very doughy and pretty spicy and the fried chicken was overdone. good service and i am told the chef is being replaced next month...sounds right"

  • "Disappointed with the food which lacked the spice, depth and soul of New Orleans. Although there was a party of 25 next to us and the restaurant was full, the service was decent with only a lag in taking our order."

  • "Convenient for dinner before show at jazz center. Food serviceable, not spectacular , a bit too salty. Great service even in pre-show rush."

  • "I had the jambalaya, with very soggy, clumped rice. I hope Pham figure out how to improve the recipes and food preparation. "

  • "We all really loved the great southern food and the ease of just walking out of a wonderful jazz concert and into a cool glass jewel box restaurant. Loved the blacken fish and the corn salad. The service staff was friendly and helpful. "

  • "All SFJazz devotees know about and likely have eaten at South. Its convenience is obvious; Phan's American South take on food is fun and well done and while the menu is limited (and I believe it hasn't changed since the restaurant was opened), it's an excellent choice when going to the Jazz Center. Wine list is actually excellent for such a small place. Outstanding waiter on this occasion (our second time)."

  • "I really want to like South; it is so convenient to the shows at SF Jazz and I love the cuisine but for the second time the snafus in service caused me to be late and even miss part of the performance! This is just unacceptable and I won't be going back. "

  • "Good venue especially if attending opera or symphony. Cocktails are different (a little costly). Our Chicken/shrimp Jambalaya was tasty, although could have included more shrimp. In the waiter's description he mentioned sausage, but there was none. A side of broccolini was enough to share for two. Service was attentive. Being early, it was quiet enough for conversation but filled up soon after that. Probably would return for lunch to try other items. "

  • "This place is solid. I had the steak and cauliflower salad. Steak was great, but cauliflower was totally bland. Noise level was too high. Ambiance, great. With some work, this place could really compete in Hayes Valley."

  • "We had Fried Oysters, Hush Puppies, Corn Salad, Broccolini, Fried Chicken, Jambalaya, Shrimp and Grits. Each dish was perfectly prepared, beautifully presented and tasted delicious! I will be back to try more of the menu, although it will be hard not to order the exact same dishes over again as it everything was so delicious. This was the finest Southern food I've tasted, in or out of the South."

  • "We got the Cornbread and Mac n cheese for fun. My hubby got the Fried Chicken sandwich and I had the gumbo after a salad. What a DELIGHTFUL meal! he LOVED the sandwich, the salad with it had a really subtle but sweet dressing. My gumbo was tame , light on the protein, but it was favorable, not excellent. The Mac n cheese was delicious, with a very slight kick to it. No desserts was sad, but overall, I would eat lunch there again! "

  • " I took my wife and 3 year old here for mothers day. Fried chicken, Po Boy oyster sandwich, and citrus salad was awesome, but the mac n cheese, collard greens, cornbread, and rice and beans lacked any flavor. We tried to ask for salt, but no one came by for 20 mins. We Took It home...Once We Put Some Flavor To The Food, it got much better. We would go back again for the fried chicken..not much batter..it was soo Crispy, juicy, and flavorful. Awesome!..just be prepared TO ask for salt or bring your own! "

  • "Last year for our 25th anniversary we went to London & Paris. This year for our 26th anniversary we wanted a quiet, unpretentious restaurant with great food. That's what we got with South at SF Jazz. The Cajun menu is comfort food for us, plus lots of veggies, imaginative twists and very fresh ingredients. Though the menu is not extensive, all the choices look amazing, and the dishes we had, with suggestions from the waitress were fabulous! The fried okra starter was light, not greasy, very nice crispy battered coating to complement the texture; the shaved veggie salad was bursting with flavor; entrees were the blackened fish and Hanger steak; side of red beans and rice; desserts, chocolate cake and coconut candy. The waitstaff was great!"
