  • "The new tapas format doesn't really work. Start with a menu that has no English translation for the many Spanish-named dishes and a waitress who mumbles the explanations. A wine list which stresses Spanish wines to the near exclusion of superior US, French and Italian wines. A décor with no warmth. And finally, as many misses among the dishes as hits. Why the owner of such a premier restaurant as Slanted Door couldn't do a better job here is difficult to fathom."

  • "The food was delicious but very tiny portions (it is a small plate venue), mostly spicy, what I would categorize as appropriate to go with drinks. We were ordering dinner and found it challenging as one of our party couldn't eat spicy food. I would go back for a drink and order one or two of the small plates. Service was quick and you can't beat the location when you have tickets for an event at the jazz center."

  • "As regulars at SFJazz, My wife and I have enjoyed South since it opened. We really enjoyed its previous iteration, with excellent fried chicken and fried oysters, and Boudin balls. We were very happy to learn that the change to Mexican was a success. The zucchini squash blossoms stuffed with ricotta and the tostadas were so good, we ordered them twice! Everything was excellent, and the bar continues to put out phenomenal cocktails. Perfect as a pre-concert meal, but worth a trip even if you aren't going to see jazz."

  • "I am sooooo sorry to encounter still more Mexican food in San Francisco! I counted more than a dozen Mexican restaurants near SF Jazz already, AND they're cheaper. What happened to the great Southern Comfort food that went so well with New Orleans and Jazz motifs? My family will be back for the music but eat elsewhere from now on."

  • "We had a "mystery fish" (tilapia?) that definitely wasn't filet of sole. The roasted cauliflower was clearly not roasted — barely cooked and drenched in vinegar. The corn salad was uneventful. The deviled egg was good (hard to screw that up). Wine was fairly priced. Lemon tart was nothing special. Our service was terribly obsequious. Based on our experience, we certainly wouldn't go back to try the other menu choices. All in all, the menu was obviously designed to provide the least amount of value for the most price: Profitability without delivering value is called stealing. A spectacular venue for sophisticated music needs a complementary menu. SF Jazz and its musical patrons deserve better. Fantastic disappointment."

  • "Our recent visit to South was our first this year, after feeling ho-hum about it a couple of times last year. This year, we went to several SFJazz shows without visiting South, until now. I should note that we went on a Monday evening. And now we liked the menu, the execution of the several dishes we chose, and the service that we received. If you're seeing a show at wonderful SFJazz, this has become a fine place to eat and/or drink beforehand."

  • "The food was very bland. The flavors of the fried chicken were non-existent. The red beans and rice were very bland with no hint of thyme, bay leaf, no hint of flavors of the corner stone of creole/cajun cooking. The collard greens were good. The corn bread muffins were good. The macaroni and cheese was very bland and I thought a better selection of cheeses would have made the flavors pop. The jambalaya was very bland, the flavor and texture of chicken was good, but the rest of it fell short. The staff was extremely nice and did their best to accommodate the patrons needs however they were understaffed and it showed. I think management could have done better planning when it came to staffing."

Its convenience is obvious; Phan's American South take on food is fun and well done and while the menu is limited (and I believe it hasn't changed since the restaurant was opened), it's an excellent choice when going to the Jazz Center. Wine list is actually excellent for such a small place. Outstanding waiter on this occasion (our second time)."

  • "Good venue especially if attending opera or symphony. Cocktails are different (a little costly). Our Chicken/shrimp Jambalaya was tasty, although could have included more shrimp. In the waiter's description he mentioned sausage, but there was none. A side of broccolini was enough to share for two. Service was attentive. Being early, it was quiet enough for conversation but filled up soon after that. Probably would return for lunch to try other items. "

  • "We had Fried Oysters, Hush Puppies, Corn Salad, Broccolini, Fried Chicken, Jambalaya, Shrimp and Grits. Each dish was perfectly prepared, beautifully presented and tasted delicious! I will be back to try more of the menu, although it will be hard not to order the exact same dishes over again as it everything was so delicious. This was the finest Southern food I've tasted, in or out of the South."

  • "We got the Cornbread and Mac n cheese for fun. My hubby got the Fried Chicken sandwich and I had the gumbo after a salad. What a DELIGHTFUL meal! he LOVED the sandwich, the salad with it had a really subtle but sweet dressing. My gumbo was tame , light on the protein, but it was favorable, not excellent. The Mac n cheese was delicious, with a very slight kick to it. No desserts was sad, but overall, I would eat lunch there again! "

  • " I took my wife and 3 year old here for mothers day. Fried chicken, Po Boy oyster sandwich, and citrus salad was awesome, but the mac n cheese, collard greens, cornbread, and rice and beans lacked any flavor. We tried to ask for salt, but no one came by for 20 mins. We Took It home...Once We Put Some Flavor To The Food, it got much better. We would go back again for the fried chicken..not much batter..it was soo Crispy, juicy, and flavorful. Awesome!..just be prepared TO ask for salt or bring your own! "

  • "Last year for our 25th anniversary we went to London & Paris. This year for our 26th anniversary we wanted a quiet, unpretentious restaurant with great food. That's what we got with South at SF Jazz. The Cajun menu is comfort food for us, plus lots of veggies, imaginative twists and very fresh ingredients. Though the menu is not extensive, all the choices look amazing, and the dishes we had, with suggestions from the waitress were fabulous! The fried okra starter was light, not greasy, very nice crispy battered coating to complement the texture; the shaved veggie salad was bursting with flavor; entrees were the blackened fish and Hanger steak; side of red beans and rice; desserts, chocolate cake and coconut candy. The waitstaff was great!"

The deviled eggs were awesome......The ribs were semi-sweet with cole slaw that was just just the right touch. Our server recommended the lemon pie - perfect. Even though it was noisy - we were able to hear ourselves just fine."

  • "The food was a 3 and 4 star mix. The Jambalaya was too bland and dry, but the fried chicken was good. The roasted corn salad was very good. Service could have been more efficient, but it is difficult for the waitpeople to get past the backup at the bar. They also have trouble seeing tables when they are prepping. Such a long wait for a dessert order that we could not fit it in before the show."

  • "We dined before a concert at SF Jazz. We were a party of 4- so were able to try the fried chicken, hanger steak, jambalaya and ribs. The standouts were the chicken and steak. The ribs were dry. Started w a terrific house invented cocktail- the some move to wines by the glass others had beer. When we wrapped up we got to-go cups for the concert!"

  • "This was a perfect venue for an impromptu date in our neighborhood. Surprisingly Friday night was relatively calm. The food was delicious and the portions generous. We shared the Ribs, Mac and Cheese and brocolini. It was just right. The noise level and light level were just right for a romantic dinner. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful. Do not forget the dessert. New lemon pie on the menue was the right amount of sweet to end a great meal."

  • "Your restaurant management needs to step up. I have eaten dinner at South several times. The dinner service has always been slow and very unorganized. Not a professional wait staff. The redemption is that the food is decent. I was there again this past Saturday. Went to the bar for wine, there were 4 bartenders working and they were very unorganized. Tripping all over each other. Atmosphere: boring Consistant hours: I was told the restaurant was going to be open every evening? Open sign: Which door does one go through to get to the restaurant? It changes almost every time I have been there. Lunch/brunch: Are they open for either on a regular basis?"

  • "We went for lunch before a matinee at the ballet. The food was pretty meh. Corn bread was dry, fried chicken was moist, but the breading was too salty, salad was not very engaging, rice/beans uninspired. There was just nothing to wow and with so many great restaurants around, this doesn't stand out. Service was fine, but a little inattentive, especially considering how few tables were full. I wouldn't go back, but if you can't find anywhere else before a show, it's fine."

  • "Feels a bit like an upscale cafeteria vs. a nice restaurant. Sadly I think they could have done a nicer job at the decor, but with that said, the food was nice and the service good as well. Definitely not of the caliber of the facility that it is in nor the quality of the jazz center overall, but acceptable. They went out of their way for a cocktail or 2 and did a great job making things nice and timely and comfortable. I'll go back with the expectation accordingly."
