Diner Reviews
  • "SoulCafe is very special....and a welcome relief from too much cowboy stuff! We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Smallish feel with great live combo."

  • "This isn't the first time we have been here. But still very impressive. The All you can eat chicken was more than I could eat, even though it was excellent. We love this because if is in the hood and the food and service was excellent. The only "complaint" that I would make is that, except for these specials (dinner, taco night), the prices were a little on the high side."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed Soul City. We had excellent meals and thought the menu was very creative. The service was excellent. It was fairly full that night. The reviews regarding noise were not accurate. There was an excellent 2 piece band. It was so good we even got up and danced. It is on our list as deserving a return visit when we are in Phoenix again."

  • "Well we were so happily surprised to have some of the best prepared white fish we've ever enjoyed. We come from fish country and so have lots to compare it to. It was excellent."

  • "We are only in Scottsdale for the winter but are glad to have finally tried this restaurant. The service was fast and attentive and we both had the green pork chili rigatoni and different desserts which were awesome. Kudos to the pastry chef or whomever made the rhubarb creme pie because it was very, very good. We will be back"

  • "Great food, great service, nice atmosphere. We dined with out of town friends on a Saturday night. Not sure if a band plays every night or only on weekends, but we were seated behind the band before it started playing. The facility is too small for loud music because we were unable to carry on a conversation without yelling and repeating ourselves. Either forego the music, get a band that has a softer sound, or set it up where people are not required to constantly compete with and fight the sound of the music. Good band but not really appropriate for the venue."

  • "We enjoy Soul Cafe for breakfast and lunch, and would like to recommend it for dinner, but just can't. The food is fine - a little pricey for the ambiance - but very good for a neighborhood cafe. The service has improved remarkably, at dinner and lunch. But - the hostess has a scowl and is not at all welcoming; there is no place to wait comfortably (no one is seated until the entire party is present); the live music at dinner was terrible (loud, poor quality performance consisting mostly of whiney howling over slightly out of sync strumming); there is a charge for bread; and we ate quickly and got the heck out of there. Will not return for dinner."

  • "I was a first time visitor to Soul Cafe and am so glad we tried something new! After a long hike we were looking for a new place for breakfast. My friend and I split the Italian frittata and the lemon ricotta pancakes. They were both fantastic! The pancakes were very creamy and all ingredients tasted very fresh. The portions were huge so we had plenty left over. Definitely worth a try!"

  • "Excellent variety and great quality food. All servers are polite and knowledgeable."

  • "We saw Soul Cafe featured on Channel 8's "Check, Please." We had been meaning to go for months but, being a long drive for us, didn't find the time. We finally got around to going for our 30th anniversary dinner with our two grown boys. The food was excellent. So was the wine. The band was great and they played us a special song for our anniversary."

  • "For creative southwest cooking, a little Cajun adds energy and excitement to the food. While known for their buttermilk fried chicken, the salmon on corn cake, the trout, the duck fit tacos all are equally memorable. Others at our table raved about the shrimp carbonara and the steak frites. At least for me, I love a restaurant where I can find several things that temp me. In this regard Soul Cafe fits the bill. Lastly, they could ramp up wine prices but don't."

  • "For your first time at the Soul, try the Wednesday buttermilk battered fried chicken special. After that you will return any time during the week."

  • "Food was delicious, restaurant has lots of fans and very busy on a Friday night. Glad we had reservations for 6. It was a bit on the loud side, but that comes with all the activity that was there. Will go again."

  • "Great food and service. Friendly staff. Enjoyed our time there."

  • "This is a much older crowd. Nice restaurant with higher prices (between $25-$40). On Friday, our young waitress was rushed and impolite to the older person in our party. She didn't even look at him--acted like he was invisible. She rushed all elements of our service and was literally running between tables and the kitchen. Running. She brought the bill when we were still eating, taking plates too soon. We arrived at 6:15 and were in the car at 7:00. Disrespectful to elderly patrons, who represented at least 85% of the clientele that night. I've had better service at Chipotle and with much better prices. Management needs to spend time training their staff on being respectful. It was disgraceful."

  • "We always bring our out of town guests to the Soul Cafe. The menu is diverse and you can appease any appetite. Servers are always helpful and fun....building a rapport is essential. Our server the past several times has always been that and we always make a point of requesting him. We also make it a place just for us when we want great food, great service and ambiance and you just cannot beat the location. Thank you for another enjoyable evening!"

  • "The menu here is very creative with interesting combinations; many featuring jalapenos. Meats, fish and pasta dishes all get the unique touch of the chef and are all exceprtionally good."

  • "I could not believe they charge for bread.$2.99 for 4 slices of cold bread. Food is excellent.this charge is ridiculous"

  • "My husband and I have dined in restaurants all over the world, and this experience was by far the worst. The service was horrendous (e.g., after ordering our food, it took one hour and 10 minutes to get it), then the food itself was beyond poor. The live music was ear-shattering. There was no manager on duty that evening. There was nothing pleasant about the Soul Cafe, and we will never go back."

  • "Food has always been great. Our prior visits were primarily for breakfast. This was the first dinner visit and it was superb. Linen on the tables, mood lighting, live jazz, great service. All 7 of us had different entrees and each was very good. Truly a neighborhood gem."

  • "The place was recommended and I see why. Varied, creative menu, attentive wait staff (dry sense of humor a plus), and delicious. Next time I want to dine outdoors. My duck confit tortillas were yummy but my friend's steak and fries were to die for. Next time "I'll have what he's having"...."

  • "I wanted to try the blueberry and bacon pancakes. Not only is the food good, but the service was Beyond exceptional. This is about a 40 minute drive one way and it's definitely worth every mile. I will definitely return to try other things on the menu!"

  • "Soul Cafe has quickly become a favorite of ours. This time we indulged on the Friday night fish and chips special. Like everything else we have every had there, this meal was an incredible treat. I really believe this fish and chips meal bested many of the traditional ones I have enjoyed in England (and I didn't have to put up with mushy peas!). We will most definitely be back!"

  • "The Wednesday special chicken dinner is always wonderful. Three large pieces of white meat accompanied with potatoes and gravy and a corn medley -- everything is delicious. Desserts are something to NOT miss here --- made in house they are always creative and delicious. The chocolate molten cake is served with a large scoop of ice cream with a wonderful caramel sauce."

  • "The food and atmosphere were great as always. What I love most is Soul Cafe's ability to change a meal in accordance with dietary needs. I prefered not to have potatotes with my fish and was able ot have twice as many vegetarbles instead. Also, there was no fruit on the menu, but because there was some in the kitchen, I was able to have a wonderful dish of fresh fruit including blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries and not compromise my diet. Thank you !!!"
