A word from Sotto
At Sotto, Chefs Zach and Steve deliver an honest, market-driven menu of regionally-inspired Southern Italian dishes, including fresh housemade pastas and Neapolitan pizza cooked in an artisan wood burning oven. This wood burning oven was built onsite by Neapolitan craftsmen with traditional techniques that have been passed on from generation to generation and is the first of its kind in the Los Angeles area.

Our food is complemented by a fresh, seasonally relevant cocktail program with a strong background in the classics and the utilization of lesser known Italian liqueurs. We also offer an eclectic list of boutique wines from both Italy and California.

Diner Reviews
  • "Food was really good, although I've had better octopus dishes at other restaurants. Loved the housemade bread with burrata, the rigatoni with chicken liver and the margherita pizza. Great atmosphere, good date night spot. Service was excellent too."

  • "Three of us shared a pizza and small plates. We had the chickpea pastry puffs with Parmesan, pork meatballs, bread platter, kale quiche and the margarita pizza.. Everything was wonderful...and can't say how much we enjoyed the cannoli and one chocolate dessert! Easy valet parking too!"

  • "Sotto has the makings of a really special dining place. The menu is well-considered and inventive with flashes of brilliance.However... the seasoning on most salads and pastas was just plain 'heavy'. The room was (unfortunately) too loud, but he staff were delightful."

  • "Diverse, interesting, and tasty menu selections. Every item we ordered was terrific, and it would be very easy to order too many items if eating family style after reviewing the menu. A good wine list and a very up beat and warm/ cozy interior. The outdoor terrace looked like a great place to dine in the evening."

  • "We love this Italian eatery and mostly because most everything is grilled or wood oven baked. MUST TRY THEIR THICK SCLICED GRILLD BREAD TOPPED WITH FRESH BURRATA CHEESE. Braised octupus is my particular favorite but their wood fired chicken topped withfired spinach is somethin to look forward to. The calzone can be shared by 2-3 people and I suggest trying as many dishes as possibe. A wonderful find!"

  • "My wife and I always enjoy coming to Sotto. The meatballs and pizza are always delicious and their pasta is really well done, though it tends to be a bit small for the price. Our waiter was very helpful and funny and we were recommended a great second bottle of wine by another waiter. All in all, another great experience."

  • "loved the surprise of walking down into the space that was transformed into this awesome dining room..wonderful dining experience except it was so dark.... could not see the menu to order without a flash light .. then when food arrived we could have used a flash light to see our food!!!!"

  • "Just not that great - another disappointing $200 meal!"

  • "We've been to Sotto several times and come here for the wonderful food and wine. This was probably our last time. The food did not disappoint. Nor did the wine, recommended by our waiter. The waiting staff was friendly and attentive. Great service. What did disappoint was the extreme noise level. There were two of us (thank goodness not more or it would have been a scream-fest). To hear each other we had to yell at each other. The voices from the tables around us and next to us carried over in a piercing manner. Needless to say, it was very unpleasant and in the end we gave up on engaging in conversation. We opted out of desert for although we enjoyed our food tremendously, we just wanted don't leave."

  • "The atmosphere reminded me of home (NYC), great vibe, good food and good service. Whoever designed the interior came from NY - great seating, lighting and decor (although, don't forget your phone flash light it will come in handy for reading the menu). Tables are close together but people are friendly and will help recommend a dish or two - take them up on it especially if they have been there before you won't be disappointed. Everyone says the pizza was good but the other dishes are a must try. Go for the pork meatballs and then some of the pasta dishes - share with someone or spread them across the table. Can get a little pricey on the wines if you are crazy - but hey, don't you deserve it every once in a while."

  • "Rustic italian with the pastas standing out. With great wine and an adventurous palate, Sotto is why you go out and eat and drink. Full of life and flavor."

  • "Excellent, excellent food. The waitresses recommendations were spot on and the manager/host? was super friendly. I saw groups, people with kids, and couples on dates. Just an FYI this place is more casual than I expected so I felt a bit overdressed. I would definitely go back."

  • "Loved Sotto. The food was absolutely delectable. The PASTA was some of the best I've had...ever! Perfectly al dente with amazing flavors. Get the lamb ragu and spicy sausage ones! Also try the meatballs -- SO tasty!"

  • "Even in a town known for it's terrific restaurants, Sotto stands apart as a must-do. It was suggested to us by an award winning chef friend who trained in Italy and we were still impressed! For starters - don't miss the Romanesco Agra Dolce (a more perfect vegetable dish is hard to imagine)...Or the Fava Puree or any salad. If you eat octopus, this is the place to try it. Then there are the great pasta dishes. Oh, and the pork meatballs still call my name. It was a perfect dish. We got excellent wine suggestions and received friendly, knowledgeable service. There are lots of reasons professional food people eat here. If I lived in LA, this would be a weekly dining spot."

  • "Come hungry! Their calzones are huge eventd and very east coast worthy and the pizza is also good. They use a thick chewey sourdough style bread. If you like chicken ry the brick oven chicken but order immediate as it takes 45 mins to bake. Grilled octopus is tender and flavorful. . Make a reervation because this is a neighborhood favorite!"

  • "Had such an amazing meal that I plan to return to this place weekly until I consume every item on the menu. Sotto was recommended to me and I had modest expectations that were quickly surpassed. Order two speciality drinks that blew me away. Waitress made two great recommends. Homemade bread for appetizer. Best bread and cheese I've ever had. I know everyone says that but this time it's true. Pork ravioli overflowed with flavor and spice. Redefined my position on pasta. Amazing place. Run to it."

  • "My group of 3 had several appetizers, most of which were quite good. The pizza however was not just substandard, it was atrocious. The flavors of the Guanciale pizza were decent, but the crust was thick (compared to the other pies) and raw. The Diavolina was piled high with soggy vegetable leavings, like the tailings from the preparation of half a dozen full meals. It was waterlogged. Both the Marinara and Diavolina were so salty that they were flat out inedible. I do not use the word lightly; they could not be eaten. We left behind more than half of all three pizzas. I wouldn't leave behind that much Domino's. I cannot imagine how the LAWeekly included this place on their top 10 list in LA, let alone giving it the top spot."

  • "I don't drink, but I do eat. Sotto has the small plates game dialed in. Similar to gjulina in venice, but less puddles of oil under everything. Deliscious little yummies that sound great on the menu , and surprise when they appear at table incarnate. If you like rich desserts get that bittersweet chocolate thing with hazelnuts."

  • "This was our fourth or fifth visit. Food seems to be a bit on the decline. Every dish was heavy with oil and heavy handed. The wine list is difficult to navigate, unless you are familiar with Southern Italian wines, then it's a dream. No matter, the sommelier is ALWAYS helpful and does not steer you wrong. Tables are crowded. So, by the end of the meal, we could hear couples on either side, better than we could hear each other. I wish they'd do something to absorb the noise from all of the hard surfaces of the decor."

  • "This is not the first time that I have been to Sotto and assuredly it will not be the last. This eatery has a phenomenal selection of foods for all palettes. Service is quite attentive and well versed in the menu. If there would be one challenge that I would pose to Sotto management involves the adjustment of lighting. My guest and I were seated in a darker section of restaurant that did not bode well for visually enjoying our meals as much as our taste buds."

  • "I love the food at Sotto. I've got to say, I haven't been back in quite a while because I the very unpleasant experience I had the last time...we actually walked out of the restaurant and dined upstairs instead. I refused to come back, but my friend talked me into coming and the experience this time was great. The service was up to par and the food, as usual, was awesome. The pizzas are my favorite. I'll chalk my last experience at Soto to an isolated incident. Maybe the hostess was having a bad evening."

  • "When you walk into this place you're immediately soaked in the warm glow of candlelight and the smell of a wood burning oven. The low lit setting sets the perfect mood for a romantic date or fun with friends. All of these things would seem to point to an expensive menu but at Sotto everything is perfect. The best part is how they have a variety of sizes for plate offerings of fantastic italian dishes. We had the bread and burrata plate to start followed by a baby kale frittata. Both were divine. The burrata was creamy and the bread smoky and crusty- delicious. The homemade pasta that followed with spicy sausage ragu can't be explained. Perfect pasta, perfect spice. oh and the drinks were boozy and tasty as well. Definitely go to Sotto."

  • "When we first read the menu, although we will eat or try almost anything, very little appealed to us. We ordered at least 6 dishes to share including a main course fish and a pizza, plus dessert. Much to my surprise we enjoyed most of the dishes although a couple were way too salty. That being said, we'd never return to this restaurant because it was so dark that you could not read the menus without a flashlight, very young group next to us also asked for flashlights. Then it's not very appetizing to not be able to see you food when you're eating!"

  • "We love to sit a the Communal Table, especially near the glass. It is exciting to watch the chefs cook the food. Starting from the bread to dessert, everything on the menu is superb! A must have is the Orata, Mouthwatering herbs in every bite. We ordered the pork meatballs to share, wrong move we each could have eaten them all by ourselves. The seasonings, the presentation, the cheese, the olive oil, simply divine. We love Soto's and cannot wait to turn our friends and family onto the place. It is a must go place! Everyone makes us feel so welcome. Like they haven't seen us in years! Exceptional hospitality~ Buon appetito!"

  • "Sotto has by far one of the best Napolitan pizzas in the SoCal area and I would come back here just for the pizzas everytime. They have a pork chop dish which is also very good. As for the wine list, it's great. The manager who takes care if the wine list is very knowledgeable and it's smart to take his advice. As for beer they only have 1 beer on tap (Peroni) which isn't bad, just very light for me since I like IPAs. All in all Sotto is a great place and has authentic Napolitan pizzas which in my opinion is the best way to have pizza."

  • "THis is perhaps my seventh time eating here. It keeps getting better! Fresh ingredients, unique presentations etc...I brought a group of executives from my company here. Everyone ate more heartily and in a much more collegial atmosphere than usual. So this is also conducive for business."

  • "The Panelle were wonderful -- lovely little pillows. Great appetizer! However, the rest of the experience was lacking. We stopped for a quick, early bite. A little pressed for time. Wine list looked nice but we weren't able to sample on this visit. We both had pasta. Although very good, they were extremely salty to my taste, and I usually like a lot of salt. Table service was very good and our server "Robin" was nice. However, the seating. Does the Maitre d' get a bonus for filling the worst seat -- facing the Pass, next to the lavatory? We were the first customers of the evening. Got seated there. Got moved. Next party in, got seated there, got moved. RIGHT NEXT to us. Finally the 3rd party of the evening took the bait."

  • "I learned how to use my iPhone flashlight out of necessity but alas even if I'd had ear plugs they would defeat the purpose of joining friends for dinner. Couldn't read menu, couldn't see food once it was delivered. Flavors were delicious but very rich and ended up taking Alka Seltzer before bed. Worst of all, sommelier suggested an off menu wine from Southern Italy - it was delicious but not $75 delicious which he should have mentioned & we would have declined - we have to take partial blame but it would have been a nice courtesy on his part. Wouldn't go back & wouldn't recommend - over all very unpleasant - couldn't wait to leave."

  • "The food here is inventive, tasty, and amazing. Every time I'm in LA, this my go-to restaurant. I collect (and drink!) Italian wines, and this place is nirvana. Their list is stupendous Southern Italy concentration) and they always have off-list wonders (ask!). And then, oh, the food. Bread from heaven (out of their wood-burning oven), pizza that the Napoletani would jump for, OMG meatballs, pastas extraordinaire (try the paccheri and the casarecce). Go, but don't tell anyone!"

  • "The food is SO good, grilled pork meatballs, lamb ragu pasta, Guanciale pizza. YUM! The variety of cocktails is noteworthy. You can tell them what flavors you're looking for in a drink and they will come up with something for you! The servers are knowledgeable and friendly. We're looking forward to our next dinner here!"

  • "Took my love here for Valentines Day and it was terrific. Delicious food and great atmosphere."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "We had a variety of small and medium plates, as well as one pasta dish. The food was really terrific, if maybe slightly oversalted. The smaller plates came out quickly (almost too quickly). Then we waited much too long for the pasta plate which was our last dish. We finished our wine and were not ready to buy another glass. So it left us without the always desired wine/pasta pairing. All in all a truly good meal. With the minor insult of delivering the check too early after we waited so long for the pasta. We would return."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "We were seated (with a reservation) for 30 minutes before our drink order was taken. Another 20 minutes before our food order was put in and another 20 before it came out. The guests at both adjacent tables arrived 45-60 minutes after us and yet still had their bill before us. The server was sweet, but honestly for the price we paid it was the least attentive, most untimely service I've ever experienced in LA. The food was great but when it takes almost 3 hours for dinner once seated, we will likely not be returning."

  • "Our experience was unfortunately marred by a sommelier who decided we had not ordered a bottle of wine expensive enough for his taste. After ordering our food and our wine, he comes over and offers to give us a tasting of another wine that was $10 more....All I could think of was "HARD SELL"...It was a truly uncomfortable and put our entire experience on tilt. The food was good to uneven, our first course was good...the fritata and lamb very tasty...our entrees of pork ragu pasta (too al dente) and pork cheek pizza was just very good but with doughy crust that didn't hold up to the toppings....overall...the cooking shows thought and imagination, the service totally amateur and tone deaf."

  • "I have to admit I was bummed when my partner ordered the brick - pressed half chicken, when there were all those pastas and pizzas calling out from the menu. But it was definitely one of the most perfectly cooked and juicy chickens I've had in my life. Make sure you go with someone who is willing to share. Still not a fan of paying for bread - I know it's tres European, but $3 a slice? That $9 should go towards another glass of wine in my book! You'll want the room for your meal anyways. It's going to be delicious!"
