This kitchen remains one of the best in Baltimore, and the service we received on our last visit was superb. You can't go wrong with most anything on the menu we have discovered. This time was a delicious fava bean soup and duck confit with a 5 mushroom risotto to die for. We will keep coming back.

We had an 8:30PM reservation and were told to go to the bar for "a few minutes". About 25 minutes later, our table opened. The food is delicious and the wine list diverse, but the place to needs to prepare better for busy Saturday nights.

We got a corner banquette and that made the full dining room tolerable for noise. The menu is always delightful - specials on a separate page and the reliable and well-tested general menu with items I still adore - after nearly 20 years of dining in Ricardo Bozzio's establishment. From the home-made focaccia and olive oil to the delicately spiced duck breast, the meal was well-paced and served. Our waiter was a little full of himself and missed slightly on my order, but he was trying very hard to please. He should relax and know that the food at Sotto Sopra stands for itself very well. A couple of bottles of Brunello di Montalcino were sumptuous as sangiovese is one of my favorite grapes. One of my tablemates, who was hungry for pasta, took my advice and had the pasta carbonara which he practically inhaled. The other friend ordered the lamb chops and nearly ate the bones as well - they were so tasty. Sotto Sopra continues its meticulous menus as they have from the first day they opened. I expect I have had 100 meals or more here, and I have never been unhappy. The staff is well-trained and in addition too being competent, they are friendly as well. I'm coming back, Ricardo!!!

Duck Confit had exactly that richness of flavor that I look for in a well prepared example. However, the wild mushroom risotto was even better. No mere Crimini and Portobellos, while I don't know the types, these wild mushrooms were the real deal. It was obvious from the aroma and the taste. Duck Breast with cherry reduction was perfectly cooked. The sauce was rich with a force of flavor to match that of the duck. The broccolini was an excellent accompaniment. Add a lovely Pinot Grigio and dinner was a success.

We had made dinner reservations for 8:30 and were not seated for almost an hour. Once we were seated, it took another 20 minutes just to get our drinks. We were very disappointed with the lack of service. The staff didn't seem to care that we waited for so long for a table and didn't even try and compensate for the poor service.

My husband and I went there last Saturday night. We always have wonderful service and food, but for some reason everything was truely perfect from beginning to end. Our server was so sweet and seemed to read our minds as to when to come over and ask if we wanted another drink. This is one place where I will take a reccomendation on a wine from the server because they know their wine list and I have never been disappointed. My gnocchi was light and fluffy as promised and the flatbread was enormous and served as dinner the next day. The seafood cioppino was also great. We always enjoy the homemade gelatos. The white chocolate raspberry was outstanding. I believe this is one of the best restaurants in the city. Valet parking makes it an easy choice.

We had the 18$ 2 course-lunch. The dining-room is very large and decorated with frescoes. The house salad was tasty and well-seasoned. My main course was a home-made Papardelle with fresh tomatoes. It was delicately cooked. We also had an extra dessert, the Mascarpone cheesecake, which was light and original. The service was attentive. The bread was also excellent and served with nice olive oil.

On a Friday night it was packed, which meant it was loud just by nature of architecture- it is cavernous. Several large groups & it looked accommodating to them. You definitely need a reservation. The tables for two had maybe a foot between then, and the aisles to & from the front to the back had about 18". I'm not sure a larger person would feel comfortable walking through-it was crowded. The food was wonderful overall, easily $75 pp if you do 3 courses & wine. Our waiter was fantastic.

When walking into Sotto Sopra, it feels like you've walked into a New York City restaurant--warm and cozy with hints of big city charm. Large portions of the restaurant were taken up by those celebrating birthdays--which is an indication of its special nature. My boyfriend and I had a reservation but were sat late--which the restaurant made up for by picking up our bar tab (a very generous gesture that did not go unnoticed). Each item we ate was more delicious than the last, and our server was attentive and comedic. I would absolutely go back, and would strongly encourage anyone who does to order the fried calamari. Although a bit overdone these days, the calamari at Sotto Sopra is light but crispy, and most importantly, not chewy!

I had the opportunity to dine at Sotta Sopra's before attending the performance of "You Think You Can Dance - Season 11 Tour" at the Lyric on 8 November 2014. The food was excellent, but what made the experience special was Irina (apologize for the spelling if incorrect) and all of the other serving staff. They were always there when they were needed but never hovering (the restaurant was much too busy for that to happen but they were still available). I was more impressed that Irina didn't get totally frustrated with the group of four older patrons who ordered fish and then had her debone all of the orders. She was there quite a while getting that done. That is where I noticed that the other support staff step up and help out.

SELECTED SOTTO SOPRA FROM OPEN TABLE'S 10 BEST RESTAURANTS IN BALTIMORE. LOVELY SETTING, SORT OF BISTRO-STYLE. VARIED MENU PROVIDED AMPLE SELECTIONS. BOTH OF OUR PASTA DISHES WERE VERY DELICATELY FLAVORED, NOT OVERPOWERING. WAITRESS, WHILE NEW TO THE JOB, WAS ATTENTIVE AND KNEW THE MENU WELL. WINE LIST WAS ENTIRELY ACCEPTABLE AND REASONABLY PRICED. WHEN OUR DAUGHTER CAME UP FROM DC A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, WE TOOK HER THERE FOR DINNER. ITALIAN FOOD IS HER FAVORITE AND SHE WAS VERY PLEASED WITH HER PASTA SELECTION. WE WOULD RECOMMEND SOTTO FOR AN EVENING OF PLEASANT DINING IN DOWNTOWN BALTIMORE.

My wife and I took her sister and husband to Sotto Sopra to celkebrate their birthdays. We had never been to the restaurant before but will definitely return, even though we live in Washington. The ambiance was delightful, our server was exceptional, the wine was excellent and, most important, the four meals (all fish) were all superb. Our server was very helpful in explaining to us which of the restaurant's offerings were vegetarian. And there were plenty of choices in that regard. And the restaurant provided two nice surprises for the birthday celebrants. Highly recommended.

We had early dinner reservations on a Saturday at 5:30pm. My husband was worried we'd be rushed through our meal. Not the case at all. Our waitress Irina was fantastic, very friendly and knowledgable. The food was outstanding, everything we tried was really good. My Fiance and I were in Baltimore this weekend visiting due to a possible move to the city. We looked extensively trying to find the perfect restaurants to try. And we hit the nail on the head when we found this gem. Immediately entering Sotto Sopra, I loved the ambiance, with the dim lighting and romantic feel. The food could not have been more amazing, I had the Fettucini alla Bolognese & my Fiance had the Pork Ossobuco. The housemade pasta was some of the best I have ever had, and his pork was tender and fell off the bone. We both shared the Creme Brulee for dessert. Our only complaint was the service, it was very slow all night, and we waited 40 minutes from the time we finished dessert until we got our bill from the waiter.

I was impressed that our server seemed very knowledgable about the wines. Her recommendation was excellent. My husband's salad and pasta a la carbonara were terrific. My duck breast was a bit bland (the sauce looked lovely but tasted mostly of salt and thickener), and the skin/fat wasn't at all crispy. Food service was prompt and we were out in plenty of time for the Symphony. Thanks!

Overall, very nice meal and experience with only a few minor things making it slightly less than outstanding in each category. Ambiance was very inviting, but the a/c vent over the table made eating with coats on required for daughter and wife. In restaurant's defense, they did turn it down when we mentioned it, but it came back on 5 minutes later and was notably chilly. Food tasted terrific with only flaw being that the pasta noodles were very stuck together. Seemed like could have been remedied with a simple stir of the pot while cooking. Service was very good and waiter was friendly and helpful, but took longer than it seemed it should have to seat us (the table was open and set) and then for the waiter to finally get to our table.

This was our first time at Sotto Sopra. It had great ambiance and knowledgeable staff, though a bit slow, as if they were understaffed. Given it was a Monday evening, perhaps they did not think they would be that busy. Interesting food, though I probably should have stuck to the pasta the first time out. I had the duck breast. The duck and cherry sauce was great, but the butternut lasagna was a disappointment. The blue cheese it was stuffed with over powered the squash. Though the waiter thought there would be just a hint, I had lumps of blue cheese--not good. I think even a hint is not a good choice. It needs something like nuts (hazelnuts, perhaps), mixed into the ricotta to let the squash shine through.

When our children were both in town at the same time we wanted to celebrate...never a question as to where we would go as SS is our favorite spot. We've been fans for 15 years, have hosted client dinners as well as wedding receptions there and have enjoyed several Opera nights. The food never disappoints! Best Italian restaurant in town! And the murals and huge mirrors makes it such a lovely setting. We had four different entrees including fish, pasta and meat and all were fabulous. What a lovely evening...

As we were driving home from NYC to DC, we decided to stop for dinner in Baltimore. Our "go to" had always been one of the many restaurants in Little Italy, but I was intrigued when my Open Table app listed Sotto Sopra as one of the search results, b/c it wasn't in the neighborhood we are so familiar with. I checked the menu and was very impressed by the unusual selection of dishes (from rabbit roulade to braised duck with cheddar sauce). The decor was beautiful, in keeping with the 1920's, the ambient music was low, the bar was gorgeous and tables were nicely spaced apart. There was an extensive menu and the food was beautiful to look at and delicious. The service was superb.
