Diner Reviews
  • "We've dined at Sotto Sopra a number of times. We love the food. Not only is it beautifully presented, but it also tastes delicious. Service is professional, for the most part. The one thing that I don't understand is why do we always have a long wait for a table, even though we have a reservation. It does take away from the enjoyment"

  • "Very nice, restaurant in the Mt. Vermont neighborhood of Baltimore. Large wine selection and very nice murals on the walls. The menu is extensive and varied. One look at eh menu and you know this is not Little Italy. Expect more upscale and very well presented items with a top shelf ingredients. The servers are very efficient, but they could use a couple more to ensure that a table of five get their items all at the same time. All in all a very good meal and fun evening."

  • "A lovely Italian restaurant with well prepared food. The menu selections might be a little more varied, but there are many pasta dishes."

  • "I had the tasting menu and chose grilled octopus salad, hand made pasta with mushroom, cioppino, and tiramisu for appetizer, first, second, and desert course respectively. It was all outstanding! Sotto Sopra is probably the only Italian place I like in Baltimore (so far). It is pricey though, so not a place I would go everyday... But I want to go back a few more times to try other dishes such as the duck breast, pork ossobuco, and lobster ravioli."

  • "Dinner here was excellent - quiet weeknight dinner in the summer with 5 guests. No problems with valet and reservations...quiet during the summer. Service and attention was great! No rush, no need to hurry from one course to the next. Food was very good - go for the Osso Bucco! And they have some nice Borolo on the wine list!"

  • "The food here was wonderful! We got tomato risotto and some kind of pumpkin pasta with sausage, both of which were fantastic. The waiter was very pleasant and entertaining, and there were surprisingly few other people there, making it nice and quiet."

  • "We enjoyed the food so much, we decided this was the spot for our sons graduation dinner. Bolognese was the best ever thanks to the light fettuccine. Osso bucco fell off the bone and paired with excellent risotto. Knowledgable waitress who suggested perfect wines. Sachetti was very pumpkin-y and sauce was perfect."

  • "Great food in the Mount Vernon neighborhood! The service was a bit slow, but the food was flavorful, and tasted fresh."

  • "Went there on a Friday night, and almost went back the next evening. IT WAS THAT GOOD!!! Food was outstanding. Atmosphere was outstanding and the service was outstanding."

  • "Returned to Sotto Sopra for my birthday (as it's a little pricey to be a regular stop) and it was excellent a second time. The wait staff are, without exception, the best in town: attentive, but not overly attentive & willing to make great suggestions if you ask. The new Octopus Salad app is the best octopus ever I've had (and I've tried it multiple times at other high end establishments). The recommended Pork Ossobuco was good & the Sacchetti do Zucca was phenomenal! (Home made pasta). Sotto Sopra will remain a special occasion spot for us!"

  • "Dining at Sotto Sopra was a wonderful way to end my birthday celebration and I knew it would be the perfect choice because they are consistent. I have dinned here many times before for special occasions and they have always impressed. The selection, presentation and delicious variations of Italian dishes exceed expectations. I will be back!"

  • "My boyfriend took me here for my birthday, which was luckily at the end of restaurant week. The restaurant itself is beautiful with large mirrors and interesting paintings around; each table was lit with a candle. It's a little bit cramped as we were about 1 foot away from the next table on both sides and could easily hear their conversations. We had a reservation at 7:30 PM and we didn't get out until 9:45 PM. Most of the time was spent waiting for our food -- our waiter was missing for most of the time although the tables around us (with a different waiter!) came in after us and left before us. The food was too sweet and we spent too much time waiting for me to ever go again!"

  • "The best thing we ate was the pumpkin sacchetti--so good it might make you go cross-eyed. We also had a great cocktail made with gin, lime, and chartreuse. The mussels were the only weak point of the dinner; the flavors were muted and unbalanced."

  • "This was our 2nd time here and it was just as good if not better."

  • "The food was very good but slow to come out of the kitchen. It was restaurant week so I expect some delays. The service was attentive but not very professional. If they categorize themselves as a fine dining establishment more training is needed for the servers. Ladies first, food eaten with a fork is served from the left and with a spoon from the right..."

  • "Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. It was definitely a great choice! A lot of restaurants limit their menus during restaurant week but this place had plenty of options to choose from. The food was fantastic and the restaurant itself had a great atmosphere. Will definitely be going back!"

  • "We went for a RW - our first visit. FOOD: bread - cold, not appealing; appetizers - just OK, entrees - great tasting and interesting, dessert - good, cheese - not. AMBIANCE: nice, but quite noisy, hard to converse, very tight sitting arrangement. SERVICE: "playing nice and entertaining", but attentive. Examples: hostess made us wait (having 8 tables ready) and only sit us down after seeing that we are not interested in her bar suggestion; water confused few things, assured us we can substitute one dessert for one cheese (the cost is the same), but AFTER we've finished the cheese announced that he can't do it and charged $8 more not even offering to serve another dessert that should be included. Not professional at all. Mixed impression."

  • "Our waitress was great - even though there was a problem with a meal. Somehow they managed to make thin veal tough - but at least the manager told us not to try again because it would be the same. The second meal - ossobuco - was AWESOME. They have a very good wine list for various tastes and wallets. Was a little crowded and a little loud - most likely because it is restaurant week. Overall a nice experience."

  • "One of the best meals I have had in years. A little crowded, but it was restaurant week, and a little louder than I imagine it is normally. Still, excellent meal."

  • "Went during restaurant week so place was packed. We were seated on time but hostess forgot to let our server know we were there so a bit of a wait. When things were straightened out our server brought us a glass of wine on the house and from then on the service was GREAT. Food was fantastic. Not a place to bring the kids. Highly recommend."

  • "The food was divine, the service was flawless, courteous, and timely - despite being swamped for restaurant week! My wife, Taccagna, and I, had a wonderful experience! As we say in Italian: "Troppi soldi per troppo poco cibo!""

  • "We went to Sotto Sopra for restaurant week and had a great experience. We had a party of 8 and our food came out in a timely fashion. The food was superb. Everyone at the table had great things to say about their meal. Would definitely recommend this restaurant"

  • "Sotto Sopra is my favorite restaurant. I could eat there every day. We recently went for dinner during restaurant week and were also celebrating my birthday. There was a birthday card for me at the table signed by Ricardo. Had three courses: Cured Salmon Tartare, Spaghetti Neri alla Chitarra con Gamberi, and Vanilla Creme Brulee. Everything was excellent. The creme brulee is always my favorite. I will have to restrain myself from visiting every day."

  • "The pumpkin sacchetti were to die for, the service was perfection, and the room was beautiful--what more could one ask? From start to finish, a meal here is like taking a little trip to Italy."

  • "It has been years since I've eaten at SS and for the life of me don't know why I waited to return. After a fabulous RW dinner last night, it will now be in my regular rotation. My experience with RW dinners is that there's usually a hiccup in service, food, or wait time. None of the above here. We picked SS because of it's fine reputation and very appealing RW menu. From the moment we arrived at the bar, the service was friendly and responsive. Recommendations were spot on. Highly recommend the mussels, salmon and cheesecake. My companions loved their choices, too. I was particularly impressed with the old school service. Refolding diner's napkins - so nice. The space is a bit loud, but great ambiance. A wonderful evening!"

  • "I was there during restaurant week. I understand that the regular menu is better. The fried polenta was extremely undistinguished. The eggplant in the sauce for the fish was undercooked. The Marcapone cheesecake was a stand out. It was light with fruit and sorbet that worked extremely well. The restaurant decor and ambience is outstanding. I'm going to try again."

  • "Sotto Sopra continues to impress me with its Restaurant Week menu. It's inventive, delicious, and diverse - meaning I have more than three options to choose from for each course (thumbs way up for that!). Our server Sean was a delight; friendly, full of great suggestions, and not at all overbearing. Give the kid a raise, he was great. The only real complaint I have with SS is the lack of affordable wine options. I'm sorry, the least expensive choice should not be clocking in at around $40 (most are WAY more than that). Take note of other good restaurants in the area that offer affordable options at or under the 30 dollar mark. Or, at the very least, give you more options by the glass."

  • "have been here many times--one if our favorites--but will not go back any more during restaurant week---should offer reg menu as well as MEAL DEAL one--my cod was ridiculously small--must have been 3 oz at best. Was so hungry that I stopped at Whole foods and went home and made soup"

  • "I was treating a friend and told her to pick the restaurant, I was a bit disappointed when she selected Sotto Sopra. The first time I went for restaurant week several years ago the service was not up to par. The food was so so. My experience on Sunday changed my opinion, I am looking forward to going back again. Each course was better than the previous. Thumbs up!"

  • "my husband and i celebrated my birthday at sotto sopra during restaurant week. we have been to the restaurant before and it is one of our favorites in the city. sometimes the food and/or service at restaurants can suffer during restaurant week due to the increased volume of guests, but this was definitely not the case at sotto sopra. the food was delicious (as usual) and the staff was amazing! from the hostesses who made sure that we had a roomy table (i am 9 months pregnant), to our awesome and attentive waiter, scott, to the runners and busers, the service was friendly and quick, but we never felt rushed. every time we eat there we say it was the best meal yet! highly recommend."

  • "This experience will be hard to beat. Large number of choices, beautifully presented. Server, (David?) went out of his way to find me a pair of reading glasses because I had forgotten mine and even cleaned them off before giving them to me."

  • "By chance, we went to this restaurant during restaurant week. The food was very good, but the service was a little rushed. They were serving desserts before everyone was finished their main course. I find this a little unnerving. They were too attentive .. removing plates while you were in the middle of your last bite. I know it was busy but we were there early when the restaurant was still not full."

  • "I'm visiting my boyfriend here in Baltimore, and we're both new to the city. Coming from NYC, which is a foodie city, I looked at many places and have visited a lot to have a good dinner, and Sotto Sopra, by far, has won me over. The quality of the food was great, and what made our night even better was the great service! Our server Alex was friendly, knowledgable and personable. Not only was he polite, he shared with us his wealth of knowledge in Italian cuisine. I ordered the squid ink pasta and it was so delicious! Highly recommended!"
