to be fair, i haven't tried nigisi sushi here because i had no time to wait..i advise you not to go there before 1830 even though they say they open at 1700. If you go there early, then you need to wait to have nigiri sushi or take other dishes( but I am sure many of you want to have nigiri here). I had two rolls and salmon appetizer here and I didn't like rolls at all. the appetizer was okay but not exceptional. If I had known that I couldn't have nigiri, then i would have not gone there.

For a Michelin 2 star restaurant in NYC I expected so much more. The head chef/owner constantly berated the staff in front of diners and created a very negative space. The food off the 'menu' was very good but the sushi was very average. Clinical setting, poor service, negative vibe and very average food all for 2-star prices. Save your time, money and good times for somewhere else, there are plenty in New York.

We are frequent Japan Travellers, Japanese food lovers. We did enjoy the food at Soto's, however the way they present it on the menu made us feel uncomfortable. No way to understand how to order, how big or small the dishes would be, why this first and that later... a mixture of food, but no kaiseki style or recommendation of menu... The waitress was no help at all. We recommend to order everything at the beginning, she said. If not it might take too long later... Cold unpersonal atmosphere... Maybe a second time will be less confusing? We have not decided yet if we want to try a second time.

Sat at the sushi bar; right across from the Sushi chef. Half way through, the sous chef next to the sushi chef is about to hand me a piece of uni sushi when something large/loud drops to the floor. He puts my uni on the counter and then proceeds to pick up the items that had dropped to the floor; he then without washing hands, picks up the the Uni and gives it to me. When I inform the sushi chef what had happened and asked for a new piece, he basically started disagreeing with me loudly and it only got worse from there. He started screaming, stomped away to the kitchen yelling louder and louder. We then hear him banging pots and pans. We left. Read later he has done this before; even pulled out a kitchen knife one time.

As I have been born and raised in Japan, I have a rather high standard for sushi. Our experience at Soto exceeded my expectation of a sushi restaurant outside Japan. Fish was properly prepared, and was matching with sushi rice. I specially impressed with maguro (akami) and uni. We further really enjoyed conversation with Sotohiro-san, the chef, after dinner.

A friend and I visit Soto at least once a year to feast on the omakase. It takes several hours and the staff is incredibly patient and attentive. Needless to say, the variety of sushi/sashimi is excellent and the chef's talents are apparent in the presentation as well as in the combination of flavors of each dish

The food here is terrific--especially the rich miso soup with lobster, the braised black cod, minute steamed tai, the wild snapper carpaccio, and the fabulous cyu toro tartare. Nice austere (in a good way) atmosphere. My only criticism--and it's one that the management should definitely attend to--is that they can be really obnoxious about hustling you out of there. On two occasions (which were special celebrations), we had the amazing omakase tasting menu. But courses started being rushed toward the end. Then, while we were still drinking our tea, we were asked to leave because they needed the table: this, while we were spending over $400 on a dinner for two! Not acceptable. And it's happened more than once, so it's not a fluke.

FOOD: It's my 3rd time at Soto. Food was on par with my previous visits: greatly executed traditional sushi with some hints of adventurousness. SERVICE: It's not only got worse, it's got shameful: 1. showing up at the time of the booking, we were told the table wasn't ready and asked if we wanted to go back in 15 minutes 2. when we came back, we were ignored for 5 solid minutes as the table wasn't ready 3. we were offered (as a party of 4) to sit at the bar 4. after another 15 minutes we were offered a high table 5. we were not asked if we wanted coffee or pudding, just handed the bill straight away 6. Casual vocal fight behind the bar between the 3 cooks Michelin should scrap Soto down from their guide

Food was excellent; definitely expensive but in the same range as other high end sushi restaurants. Unfortunately they seem to have some issues with the service. Our waitress was very polite but not particularly helpful and not as polished as one would expect from this kind of place. Also, the sushi took forever to come out - waited nearly an hour

Finding authenticity when it comes to Sushi is too often a labor in futility. These days there are as many so called Sushi restaurants as Chinese takeouts with the same mediocrity of quality. Soto stands out and as such is truly for those who appreciate the delicacy of superb Japanese cuisine. As for the price, given the caliber and masterful preparation and subtle flavors, Soto is very reasonably priced. As good as it gets this side of Japan.

One of the best sushi restaurants in the city. Go for the omakase menu. The original chef's choices are centered around uni (sea urchin) but you can opt out of this and get two/three of these out of 15/16 if you are not a huge fan of uni. I have tried both versions. They are both amazing. At the end of the omakase you can order some extra sushi tastes. My favourites are the fresh water eel, squid and torched salmon. The quality of the food is extremely high and the flavour combinations are always interesting. My favourite spot for high-end sushi.

Amazing food. Exceptional menu mostly involving Uni. If you love Uni, this is a must-go! Japanese fine dining that is like no other. But the portion size is very small (all sort of tapas/ appetizer portion) and expensive menu. The interior is very simple, modern, quiet that makes you feel like you are at a neatly-decorated home of someone. There is no sign of the restaurant, which made it hard to find at first, but gave that special feeling of finding your hidden gem. Would highly recommend it for special times.

The food was expected to be Michelin star-worthy. Party of four, we were willing to spend the money on really good sushi but $600 dollars later, we were more than disappointed. There was 15 minute interval waits in between 4 piece sashimi. Unfortunately, I've had better in Houston, TX or in Las Vegas, NV...

Went to Soto for dinner on a Friday evening. The food was acceptable at best. The seafood was fresh but lacked flavor. We were seated at the back of the restaurant, close to the back kitchen and washrooms, which totally ruined the ambiance. The service was among the worst I've ever had, especially for such a high-end restaurant. The waitress was rude to us and even with the people seated next to us. Quite a disappointing experience.

Soto may have the potential to be a very fine restaurant, but it hasn't yet reached that level. Some of the dishes were excellent, but others were only mediocre, a victim of excessive layers of seasoning that drowned out the inherent flavor of the fish. To make matters worse, our second order of an initially delicious miso soup was watered down and could not compare to the first serving (the same could be said for their green tea, which was little more than heated water). Service was equally uneven, with excessive interludes between some dishes. We may revisit this restaurant at a later date to see if it has improved, but will meanwhile frequent the better choices for sushi in the neighborhood.

Michelin star restaurants and fine food do not get any better than Soto! Chef Sotohiro Kosugi is a true Master who has perfected his art better than any other top Chef out there. This was without doubt the very best dining experience I have ever had! I had the omakase as well as various sushi pieces. All I can say is WOW! I really cannot understand how on earth anybody who has any sense of taste and knowledge of fine cuisine and top sushi could give this incredible place a negative review. In my honest opinion Soto is far better than any 3 Michelin star restaurant there is. This really is the best of the best and Master Chef Kosugi definitely ranks as one of the greatest Chefs ever! Highly recommended!Best dining experience ever! Thank You!
